| Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit. Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own. In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins. There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free. Create a character now! If you're already a member, you can log into your account below: |

Leyanni sat on a wooden bench, staring at the fresh hay laid out within a circular fence. She'd asked them to set up a little arena to test her skills as a swordswoman. The last time she'd gotten formal training was from her father, and she was pretty good at it. Or so she thought, Ley hadn't really tested her skills in ages. It made her nervous, she didn't want to look absolutely silly in front of the townsfolk. Some of those had followed her all the way from her village to watch this. They'd seen her going through the motions in the town center, and wanted to see their guardswoman fight with a foreigner. Ley hid her nervousness behind a layer of quiet contemplation, at least facially. She stared at her feet, rubbed the polished sandstone pommel of her blade. Her other hand toyed with a coin on the interior of her pocket. Even if they had no intent to kill, someone might get stabbed or really hurt, and that would be even worse. It could take months to heal from something nasty, and she'd probably lose her job. The fight was silly, something she shouldn't be doing. If she backed out, she'd probably be seen as a coward, and no doubt the townies already had that inkling, she'd never ridden out and dealt with bandits the moment they cropped up. The half elf turned her head, black hair falling into her eyes. Her sparring partner was coming, horse hair helm bobbing up and down over the small crowd. She stood and walked to the clearing, and held out her hand. "Leyanni Kah, in case you haven't forgotten already, sir," Leyanni said, obscuring panic with well faked certainty. "We can begin whenever," Ley continued. She drew her blade, recalling all the times she'd heard the sound of steel against steel, and entered a familiar stance. |

Marcus wondered what he was doing. He was fighting a girl. That went against everything he believed in. The only thing worst was if she was unarmed. Please let her not be unarmed He thought as he let out a deep sigh. If she was unarmed then he wasn't sure what he would do. As he got closer to the girl it became clear that he wasn't going to get out of it. He was going to have to fight this girl whether he liked it or not. Hopefully she was a good fighter. That would make it that much easier. He had nothing against fighting a well trained warrior, girl or not, and hopefully that would be the case now. As he walked closer he noticed a small crowd had formed around a small arena. It would appear that this would be the location of their fight. Great, there's a audience he thought as he walked closer until he was directly in front of the girl.
"Well, Leyanni, Its nice too meet you. My name is Marcus, and I thank you for inviting me." Marcus said with a smile as his helmet was resting atop his head not yet covering his face.
Watching the Leyanni get into her stance while drawing her blade Marcus decided to do the same. Grabbing the top of his helmet he pushed it over his face. This limited his vision a bit, but protected his head very well. He then grabbed a large shield from his back and put his hand through the loop and then grabbed the handle. The shield easily covered his entire midsection. Leaving only the legs, right arm, and head vulnerable. Lastly he grabbed his spear which was strapped to his back. It was a large spear standing taller then Marcus himself, but small enough so he could easily use it. Thinking it was expected for him to strike first he tried something simple to see how she fared. Taking his spear he rose it above his head and swung it down at a angle in a slashing motion. The spear tip would be behind Leyanni, and instead the poll of the spear would come like a staff inflicting only blunt damage if it made contact, but also easily blocked. |

Leyanni watched him raise his spear and swing. Instinctively she ducked, not wanting to waste energy on parrying the blow. It sailed harmlessly overhead, and Leyanni stepped closer to Marcus. She kept in mind the reach of each weapon, like dad had taught her. Leyanni had an idea of how this warrior would fight, her dad had explained to her the basics of several common styles. She began planning, even as she tepidly thrusted at his shield. Wherever he moved she'd have to stay too close for him to use that spear effectively. She stepped closer in, swinging at the haft of his spear. The blow was to disorient the weapon and make it harder for him to bring it to bear while Leyanni waited for her moment. (This only took so long because I was hunting for ways to make what should be a fast paced fighting post a little longer.) |

It appeared that he had made the simple and easy mistake that his people have been making for generations. He made the fatal flaw of Hubris. Over confident, prideful, underestimating the enemy. Thankfully he had made this flaw in a spar and not an actual battle, or he would have been in serious trouble. As he swung over the girls head she simple ducked and moved out of his spear and got closer to him. It had seemed that she had learned the folly of his technique. As long as she kept this distance he could only use his shield. That meant he would have to push her back. When she attacked his shield Marcus did little to stop her instead he bent his shoulder into the shield and with all his strength he attempted to push her back. Unfortunately she moved out of the way and had attacked his spear in an attempt to disorient him. In defense to this Marcus moved with the spear to make sure he didn't loose it. While he moved his body he used his momentum to try and hit Leyanni with his shield. If successful she would be knocked back and he would regain the distance he needed. If it work Marcus would get into his proper fighting stance. He would lower himself keeping most of his body hidden by his shield with his eyes barely over the top and knees down showing. With his remaining arm he rest his spear atop his shield pointed directly towards the girl. |

Ley spent a split second too long studying his guard before being thrown on her back. Heavy shields hurt. She blinked at the pain, something she was unused to. Ley leaned forwards, and got back onto her feet, still a little surprised at how much a heavy blunt object could hurt. It was probably good she launched this little spar, even though she could feel her loss coming, she simply wasn't as well equipped. Now she was also staring back at his defensive posture. If she had a shield of her own, this would be easy, she suspected. Leyanni drafted a plan in her mind, and began to enact it. She attempted to knock his spear away and step past its lethal point. (Not long, but I'm not going to dwell on silly things like the birds/crowd/time of day when there's fightin' to be done.) |

Just as Marcus hit against his opponent with the blunt of the shield. He wondered if it was a bit much. Glancing over top his shield he watched as she got up. He didn't want to continue this fight if she was already hurt. Thankfully she wasn't which meant he could continue. Marcus watched his opponent intently. He didn't want to miss any of her movement. Trying to evaluate his opponent Marcus replayed the battle. All her attacks were trying to make him give up his spear and get inside his defenses. This told him two things. One that his opponent wasn't powerful enough to break his defense, and two that she knew his weaknesses and was using them to her fullest ability. Her next attack seemed straight forward enough. She attempted to do the usual and by step his spear. He simply wasn't going to allow that to happen this time. Putting his speed to good used he leaped backwards and loosened the grip on his spear. The counter weight on the opposite side of his spear mad it slide through his hands. Thus causing Marcus to choke up on his spear. Seeing he griped the spear closer to the point this allowed him to strike at a closer range. Slashing downward he attempted to strike his opponents left arm. |

Leyanni parried the blow awkwardly, only barely deflecting it from her arm. Spears were weak on the swing, thank goodness. The rookie guardswoman would probably be dead otherwise. Leyanni stepped backwards, and slowly sheathed her sword. Her eyes fell to the matted ground, her body ached. "I surrender. I can't win, I can barely hold my own. Thank you for showing me that I'm lacking and I should work on my swordplay more, Marcus Sempronius." Leyanni murmured. The istani blushed more than a little as she held out her hand. The villagers passed bets around, the odds on her hadn't been good as it was. The murmurings were more than a little heartbreaking, the natives of her village seemed to doubt her abilities. They were probably guessing why she hadn't solved all the problems they faced. Leyanni Kah was no swordswoman. "I think we'll have to do this later to see if I've improved." Leyanni challenged. She smiled weakly. She turned and walked out of the ring. A hand patted her on the back. "Don't worry, girl. I wasn't the brewmaster I was today when I started out. Maybe you just need some inspiration? I have a new ale I'd like someone to try." The brewer said, a big smile hiding behind his full beard. Leyanni smiled a little, and nodded. |
