Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own.

In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins.

There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free.

The place was not much different then she remembered it, despite the whole city being in the air. She liked this place and had rented a room here a few times even though she really had no need to sleep. She wore a dress of sorts, one of elven design that she rather liked. It was light green and darkened to dark green and then black at the bottom hem. It was split up both sides up to her ribcage and under it she wore black pants so her movement would not be hindered by the cloth.

A small elven-looking child walked beside her, in soft leather clothing meant for wear and tear. The girl looked out on the world through silver eyes. Her silver white hair hung loose about her shoulders. The little child was actually a dragon. She was practicing her skill at being human. AD didn't mind that at all. The girl stayed close to AD just in case though. Being a young dragon in a big city could be hazardous.

Aether Draka walked over to a table near the wall. She pulled out a seat for the little dragon and took a eat herself. A waitress wandered over and AD smiled at her. "Some honey mead and a apple cider. What ever is ready to eat please." The lady nodded and the little girl with AD grinned at the woman and waves. She smiled back at the child and said she would be right back.

"Still indecisive?," uttered a deep voice as the waitress pushed away from the table toward the bar.

Sargoth quietly took a spare chair out from Aether Draka's table, opposite the child, and sat down. The old god had lost his divine beauty but maintained a formidable and solemn visage. He had not hidden his face under a mask of magic this day. He was slowly discovering that the people of Imythess would not recognize him. It was a saddening but useful truth that he was adjusting to over time.

His long white hair fell to his shoulders from a center part and his skin was reminiscent of marble. The guardian looked up from his seat to Aether Draka's face and displayed a rolling lighting storm behind his eyes. He adjusted his white tunic as he settled into the seat that strained under his weight before placing his fists and forearms on the wooden table.

"You must excuse my invasion; I could not help but take the opportunity to talk to you," Sargoth explained as he examined Aether.

"Or, perhaps, both of you if you have mastered the use of that human tongue," Sargoth mentioned in passing as he glanced toward the child. His ancient eyes silently tried to peel back the layers of woven magic that covered Aether's companion. He could see traces of draconic energy in the spell, similar to that which touched Aether's, but he could not yet see past the human form which bound her so tightly.

A voice she almost didn't recognize drifted down to her as Sargoth took a seat there. He asked a question, and for AD that triggered her favorite game. The Game of Questions. "I am always a bit unsure." Aether Draka admitted, "Especially as I've been living this way all my life. The problem I am having, in all truth, is if I really have to pick sides? I rather like not having to. I like making my own friends and even the few enemies I have." She smiled at the little dragon in girl form then. "Arianr, this is Sargoth. Sargoth, Arianr. She's been practicing her way among the city."

Arianr waved meekly, remembering the story AD had told her about this man. How AD felt she was still indebted to him. AD refused to fight against him as well. It felt like... it felt like trying to fight Raven and Raven had been the closest thing AD had to a father. "A few words. Yes?" Arianr said carefully. Speaking Draconic was much easier for her, but she wanted to know the other languages as well. She understood more then she could easily speak.

AD nodded and grinned, turning back to Sargoth. "Was there anything in particular you wished to speak about?"

Sitting here in the middle of a city that disliked demons and being not only part demon, but leader of the Divshatten, this was the last place anyone who knew who and what she was would expect to find her. Of course, being part angel too made her being the leader of a bunch of demons even more unexpected. She liked it that way. She wasn't the type of person to go on killing sprees or threaten cities. She didn't judge people or try to lead them. She liked her shadows. She liked to get to know people one at a time.

"In due time, Aether," Sargoth assured his old acquaintance with a brief gesture of his hand, "All in due time."

Sargoth turned his head just in time to see the bar maid motion at him. He clearly declined a drink by shaking his head and left her to her business. Turning back to the table he discretely moved his fingers in a set of intricate patterns and manifested a tankard full of dark brown liquid, possibly a stout beer for its strong aroma was far too heavy for a mead. The ancient mage glanced around almost expecting to have aroused the attention of a nearby table and almost seemed dissapointed that the other patrons were too occupied or unobservant to have witnessed the magical creation. The old god had found that his best recruits were those who demonstrated talent without coaxing.

"Very good," Sargoth commented at Arianr, "if you have already figured out the glottal tones and inflections of your native language then I am sure you will have no trouble with the rest of them. After all, few other races benefit from a forked tongue."

He spoke calmly and nonchalant like he and Arianr were old friends. He had grown more casual with dragons of all sect since he permitted Kallix to keep her aviary on Galago. Her constant mental sparring, while often more distracting than anything else, did reveal that traditional dragon formality was often only posturing.

"Although, Aether, since you did bring it up: would you mind telling me how you have not picked a side? You are always on a side even if no one else shares it, or am I wrong?"

The little girl blushed at Sargoth's comment. She became very interested in the table in front of her. He shouldn't really be able to tell she wasn't human. The fact that he did made her more then a little embarrassed. He didn't seem to see it as wrong though. Aether Draka said that it was not. Dragons in their true form often caused fear or panic and could get someone hurt. So Arianr was learning.

Aether Draka however was not looking towards the little dragon anymore. She was looking at the drink Sargoth had summoned. You could make drinks? Did that mean you could make food too? That was something she had never even considered. She could summon and even knew a good number of demonic and celestial spells from her research, but as she had done more of an independent study of magic many of the more simple things had never really occurred to her. She couldn't cook, so food and drink was always something she had bought. To make it...

Sargoth's question brought her back to their conversation. She shook her head to clear it of all her questions about drinks and by larger extension food. Her voice was hushed, not wanting to draw attention. Not here. "I'm not sure if I would be on my own side or not. If I have friends and allies who are demons or undead, or even both..." Aether Draka paused as the waitress returned with the drinks she had ordered. AD smiled and passed over the coin after the food was set down before her. "Thank you." AD said. Arianr echoed the words and took her cup to drink.

Once the woman was out of earshot, AD continued. "Then I have the same who are angels, paladins, or healers; and if they ever met each other they would do their best to destroy each other. I have been doing my best to stop them from meeting, but when one side declares the other the enemy and swears to destroy them, it's rather hard. I've been part of conversations where some friends of mine, people who I've known for some time, decide that the Divshatten needs to be destroyed and they want my help to do so. I ask why and they say it's because it's a guild full of horrible demons. How can I explain to them that I can't help them go after the Divshatten and that I can't help them find and kill their leader because it's my guild and they would be killing me?" AD gripped her drink, looking down at her reflection on the golden surface. She then looked up at Sargoth. He knew about her duel nature. One of the few people who did. She trusted him. She had to. If she didn't she would fear him.

"Fine friends indeed," Sargoth commented without revealing which group he was referring to.

He paused for a moment and enjoyed a sip of the stout. While he never depended on the nourishment of common food and drink he did enjoy them. His emotions were becoming stronger and more commonplace the longer Sargoth lived with them and he found his urge to dabble in fine eatery to be heightened. The beer, not only of fine quality on its own, was also laced with the magic used to create it. Reintroducing the faint hints of it to his stomach made his veins tingle with recognition. It was pleasant, a feeling he cherished in these dire days.

"Regardless of your chosen company you remain on a side. It just so happens to a side caught in the middle of an ancient war," Sargoth continued as he placed the tankard back on the table.

The guardian leaned forward to talk with Aether seriously for a moment, "However, when you find yourself being pulled by both sides, which way do you lend your arm? Each side is marked by zealous fervor and that fervor is the wax of an eternal candle. It is also contagious. Whole cities can be rallied by a single cry to strike out against a percieved enemy. So, Aether, when both banners are raised, where do you stand?"

AD didn't mind speaking to Sargoth. She liked him, and respected him, and valued what he had to say. She felt that he was not one to jump to judgments with nothing to really base them on. She sipped her own drink while he spoke. She felt the warmth of the liquid that had nothing to do with it's temperature. She would have to be careful how much she drank. It effected her too strongly and she didn't want to risk Arianr's safety.

When he mentioned the War, she simply nodded. She wasn't sure what had started it, but angels and demons have always been at War. When his question came, she smiled in spite of herself. "I fight the War itself, not the people. That's why I've taken the time to learn spells like Sanctuary and Moment of Peace. I don't chose to fight for one side or the other. I put myself right in the center and stop the fighting." She thought back to the first time she had done just that. She had placed herself between her dear Lynthaer and his brother, Gregory. She had foolishly trusted Gregory then, thinking that he understood... She hoped he was gone from Imythess for good. She didn't care if he had been the God of Light when all the Gods of Imythess had lost their power. At least his so called mark had not held and her hand was free from it's scar.

She sighed and the little dragon looked up at her. Aether Draka had told the little dragon many things. This was something different though. She wasn't sure how though.

"It doesn't always work though. I couldn't stop Taras' fall. I couldn't stop that foul creature from casting Lynthaer into the vast expanses of the Abyss. I did save those I could. Some through hope, others through fear. Those who don't know of or don't understand the Fight should not have to suffer for it." AD was saddened by that. The ignorant should not be forced into the War. If they hadn't been, she would have never have been born. She shouldn't exist anyways, but while she was here, she was going to do what she could to prevent another like her from being forced into existence. Pain like that, a world shattered like that... she never wanted it to happen to anyone, ever. AD's fingers tightened around her cup. Her fingertips turned white from the pressure.

"A respectable notion but unfortunately impossible," Sargoth retorted as the heavy fact fell away from his palate. "It is in the nature of war to lash out at the innocent."

The guardian sat back in his seat and crossed his arms lightly infront of his chest. He looked at Aether without speaking and seemed to be occupied with his own thoughts for a few moments. A smile slowly crept across his face to break his stone visage. It was warm and carefree.

"Though, perhaps it would please you to know that there are more who have taken your side than you think."

He looked upward to the ceiling but it seemed that he was looking past it. His eyes saw only the wooden roof above but his mind imagined a sunny plain filled with golden butterflies who sought to engorge themselves on the sweet nectar of wild flowers. This was his place of peace, a place he liked to imagine when he thought of why he fought so feverously for the safety of Imythess.

"And what of you, young one?" Sargoth turned and cast a soft look at Arianr. "Have you learned enough about this turmoil to have chosen a side? Do you stand with our friend Aether?"

Arinar looked at Sargoth in surprise. She had not been expecting the question and it caught her off guard. "Aether is friend. Help helping her." She finally said, stumbling a little over the words. She frowned and muttered to herself. "I help, is help, no. Am. Am helping?..." Making up her mind she said to Sargoth. "I am helping her. Her, no... She. She is helping me." She looked to AD, who smiled. Arinar was getting better. She understood most of the simple words, but the order was different and it messed her up some times. The little dragon beamed, proud that she had managed to get what she wanted to say out without having to fall back on draconnic.

"Um, Sargoth?" AD asked and leaned forward, setting her glass down to rest her weight on her elbows. "Can I ask you about something completely different from choosing sides or the like?" The fact that his summoned drink was right in front of her kept her curiosity nagging her. She didn't want to be rude by bombarding hm with the questions that were demanding attention in her mind. She did rather like magic, though she had to take a different approach to it then most seemed to. It took some time for her to puzzle out how the magic was supposed to go. She had to be careful with it and at the same time, let it do what it was supposed to do. She often got in her own way... but it was worth asking about the drink, and perhaps food. It would make things so much easier with the little dragon to keep fed...

Sargoth returned the young dragon's smile as she beamed. Her human form was very cute. He was struck by her features and innocent face but moreso by her eyes. He had few encounters with truly happy dragons and they always faired better than the alternative. He hoped the joy would not end for this one. It would be best for her to hide it in her horde and perhaps spread it someday to the world. That would be a happier time indeed.

The old god tipped his head at the waitress who had clumsily kicked the chair of his leg as she swept past with four brimming tankards of ale. She smiled and offered a silent apology as she continued to the far corner of the room to empty her load onto a table of thirsty looking masons. Sargoth noticed that the white dust of their toil remained on their cheeks and arms like warpaint. They would undoubtedly return to their duties under the watch of torchlight and armed guard. There had been rumors that the local lord held an entire guild of craftsmen under lock and key until they repaired an old statue that had been toppled after a brawl between rival wizards.

He returned his attention to Aether as she leaned in to make a request.

"Of course," Sargoth politely conceded, "perhaps we should put this topic to rest for a time. It becomes more and more grating on my throat each time that I must utter it. Ask freely and I will try to provide an adequate answer."

Arinar was quite happy with how this trip was turning out. She was having a good amount of fun and no one seemed to be frightened of her. Perhaps she would be able to visit this place again. The people seemed very... common. The little dragon was pleased. If she was in her true form, the tip of her tail would be twitching happily. Of course she had no tail at the moment, so instead she swung her feet under her chair and tried the food set before her. It was quite nice, all things considered. She wondered what it was called.

With Sargoth's permission granted, the questions lept forth from AD. "How did you make your drink? Can you make food too? It's not a hard spell, is it? Can you teach me?" Her entire body almost screamed with her curiosity and eagerness to know. Her emerald eyes looked expectantly at Sargoth, glad to put the memories and the horrors of war aside for what was available in the future. If she could provide proper food and drink, she would not feel so much a burden on the few families she still took time to visit. The two children from Taras now living with their Aunt and Uncle. The little elven boy who had helped her summon the demon from the bottom of the lake where Cascadia once stood when she was looking for a sign of the dark being who had used her guild in Taras' fall. He was in the village in Norwood now, taken in by an elder there. He was learning of herbs and potions now.

Sargoth's smile grew slowly like a crack across his face before he tilted his head back and let out a hearty laugh. His chest bounced with each puff of air and his ruckus quickly joined with the crescendo of the busy tavern. He stabilized himself by placing his palms on the wooden table but decided against leaning back further when his chair groaned in objection to the sudden shift in weight.

He stretched his back with a brief shrug of his shoulders before leaning forward to match Aether's posture. His fingers interlaced gacefully and he watched Aether's eyes, searching it for her sincerity. He believed that she truly wanted to know about the small spark of magic that he had used to rouse any onlookers in the tavern.

"A change in topic indeed," Sargoth commented happily. "I am actually surprised Aether. I have seen you wield powerful arcana before yet you look at me like an eager apprentice who is about to weave her first spell."

Sargoth seperated his hands again and rubbed his right thumb against the inside of his fingers as though he were requesting money. As his thumb rotated a pale blue glow began to take shape. Within moments the glow had taken physical form and dripped from his open palm to the table. The newly created water, crystal clear and shimmering in the light of the tavern, slowly sank from view into the wood.

"Forgive me, it is just not often that I am caught by surprise these days. Of course I can teach you how to make food and water," Sargoth offered with a smile. He indicated for Aether to hold her questions and continued, "Just give me a moment."

The guardian's hands began to move rapidly and his mouth seemed to utter words that could not be heard. Within a few moments the tavern grew more quiet and began to slow to a halt. Sargoth continued to chant and imagined himself pulling up thick roots of magic from his feet to weave into his spell. He watched his spell take form with his Istari eyes and saw it cast out as a net into the tavern. It covered the room in a fine blanket and with the last corner filled time had stopped.

Sargoth sat, now quiet, at the table and calmly wiped a bead of sweat from his brow. Aether and Arinar also retained their ability to move, but the rest of the Broken Strings was trapped. Sargoth wondered if this display would actually recieve less reaction than the creation of a meager tankard.

"There, if we are to have an impromptu lesson then we shall do so away from prying eyes," he explained.

AD didn't understand his reaction, but as it was not anger, she was not worried. She simply waited for the answer to her question. Sargoth mentioned her skill with magic. it was true that she could summon demons or angels, crate huge area's of perfect peace or mask the sum with shadow. The fact was still there though, that when she needed to light the fire in her house, she called on a fire elemental to do it. Sit her in front of a candle and she would never be able to light it. Set her against the pits of hell and she would come out unmarked. It was simply how she was. Things as simple as magical food or water had never come to mind. It wasn't something one used too often in the midst of war, not when others so often used food and drink as payment for the defenders.

Her gaze was fixed on his fingers as he drew crystal clear water into existence. She resisted the urge to try to catch it when it fell from his hand, as she would have to stand up and would draw attention she didn't want. When he said he would teach her, she was thrilled. Something useful, something she could use every day even. She had more questions, but kept her mouth closed when Sargoth asked for a moment. She watched curiously as he cast a spell. She felt the power flow across the room and took comfort in the feel of it. It took her a moment to realize the entire place was still and quiet. Time... had stopped. She blinked at looked around. She had seen that spell. Along with one that slowed time. She didn't see the usefulness of it at the time. What good would it do to slow her summons in a fight? To have a literal time and space for herself was an interesting use of it. Perhaps she should look into it again. However, the promise of a lesson on making consumables was much more promising. AD couldn't cook beyond lukewarm or burnt.

"Can you make cooked foods? Like bread?" AD asked, keeping her curiosity reined in a bit so he would have time to answer her questions instead of them swarming and being mostly unanswered.

The corner of Sargoth's mouth perked up as she made no mention of the strong magic that had stalled the progression of fate and spoke only of a mere loaf of bread. He was reminded of the few apprentices and disciples he had tutored throughout his prolonged life. The questions were always novel yet they were born of the same powerful curiosity that was the mark of a truly powerful magician.

"Of course I can make bread," Sargoth assured Aether. "Mind you, a seemingly simple task such as heated food is actually more complicated in a magical sense, but it remains a distinct possibility. Come to think of it, I have actually never seen mention of cooked foods in any magical texts that I have come across, save for one private journal. It is perhaps simply an oversight on the behalf of stuffy academics but nevertheless remains a staple of a self-sufficient traveler."

He paused and wiped a finger over the damp spot left by the drizzled water. It had almost entirely sank into the coarse grained table.

"Now, your surprise requires that I ask you a question in return," he continued, shifting topics. "I take it you have little traditional training to speak of to account for your magic. So, my question is exactly how do you manipulate your spells? It is a difficult question for many so do not be concerned if you cannot provide an exact process. I simply need a glimpse into your method so that this even has a chance of working."

Aether Draka was silent for a moment. Her memory of her first 'magic' teacher was not a pleasant one. It had been her cousin, Alexander, who had tried to teach her. He yelled at her all the time as she failed in simple spells over and over. She had never known why and had given up on spell casting for some time, until Imythess had given her another chance...

"I learned most of my spells from the Libraries in Taras and the Academy of Magic. I tried to take the classes there, but didn't manage. It too me too long to master the simplest spells. So I did more of a self-study program. I found some things very easy, like summoning, but other things were very difficult, like healing and a simple light spell." AD shook her head, causing her hair to tumble over her shoulders and back with the movement. She had eventually learned the light spell but had given up on the healing magic after only managing to succeed with the spell Dark Regeneration. The holy healing spell was beyond her. Besides, Turin could more then handle it and he was not going to be leaving her any time soon. The breathing under water spell had been an interesting one to learn and in practice. Magic was just... strange.
