Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own.

In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins.

There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free.

A chill wind blew along the seacoast, causing the thick black smoke from the cove to drift out over the dark blue water. Fires still smoldered in the now silent village as cries and groans filled the air. A group of sneering, cloak clad figures moved through the rubble, their blood smeared scimitars searching for more victims.

Suddenly, a shrill whistle sounded, causing all of the dark figures to look up and slowly retreat back to the coast. They filed silently into a series of boats which then moved out to sea. A lone figure stood on the prow of a large three masted vessel, looking over his forces as they trickled back to the ship. He turned his back to the sight, moving quickly to the bridge of the ship.

"Get us back out to sea," he growled, his orders causing immediate action among the disciplined sailors. Shouts filled the air as sails were unfurled and men were hauled onto the deck. The pirates had struck again and the results had been just as devastating. For the second time in as many days, the seacoast experienced terror and for the second time, the dreaded Captain Lumen had been the cause. . .

Aiden stood on a hill overlooking the destroyed village, his eyes squinting in anger as he surveyed the damage. "Ridiculous," he muttered, saddened by the fact that there was little anyone could do about the situation. The pirates were like smoke in their ability to get away before resistance could be marshaled. The soldiers of Taras were obviously in no position to help, considering how stretched their limited resources were already.

The elf's hand drifted to his sword as he looked out over the deceptively calm ocean. While he had no idea how it would work, he was determined to do something about this menace. "One elf against a ship full of pirates," he muttered, ""Sounds like good odds to me. . ."

Aidan sat on the cliff, watching the ship. The rest of his regiment had been assigned to the other side of the city, he alone was left to the coast side. His commander was an absolute idiot, he did not heed the warnings of the locals that there were pirates, and now he would pay for it. Aidan shifted his weight to the tips of his toes, ready to move. He looked down the cliff side, sheer and gray, down into the dark black water.

He saw a perfect opportunity. Below floated a small dingy, sullen and dark. It held three pirates, all drunk; Aidan could here their slurred songs and laughter. He slung his buckler onto his arm, and took a deep breath. He hated this part. He leaned forward, still in a crouch, and fell off the cliff. He shifted his position into that of a standing man. He was headed silently toward the head of the now still dingy. He landed on the shoulders of one of the men, feeling bone give way beneath his feet.

He turned to the other two men, who had only just realized what had happened. He drew his sword and lunged at one, sticking him in the heart. The other, suddenly sobered, stood and drew a wickedly sharp knife. Aidan slashed him across the neck, sending an arterial red spray up into the air. He fell into the water. Aidan dumped the other two pirates over too, weighted by an anchor, stored in a small box on board.

He pulled his coat tighter around him, savoring its warmth. He laid flat against the boat, and drifted quietly toward the boat. In a few moments he would sneak aboard, using the darkness against those pirates with equally dark hearts.

Captain Lumen stalked the deck of his ship, making sure that everything was in order as the ship prepared to move out to sea. Too slow, he thought angrily, glaring at anyone who dared to not move speedily.

"We're ready sir!" a midshipman called out, "But everyone's not back yet, sir!"

"Then they'll be left behind!" he shouted back, "We settin' sail. We've no time to waste!" There was but a second's hesitation before the crew responded, working together to get the masted ship back out to sea. The unfurrled sails were slow to fill, but the steady, gentle breeze from the north soon had the ship underway.

Lumen looked back towards the village, noting how the skies were beginning to brighten to the east. Soon enough, the sun would be up and the devestation would be evident to all along the coast. They would have to be gone by then or deal with some unnecessary trouble. . .

Aiden sped down the hill, moving swiftly between trees and the like down to the seashore proper. He could see the tall masts of the pirate ship in the distance as the sails were just beginning to fill in the breeze. "They'll be out to sea soon enough," he muttered, wondering just how he'd be able to get out to that ship. Seimming the distance was simply out of the question. He'd have to find a boat of some sort.

A quick scan revealed a number of fishing vessels tied to the makeshift docks near the shore. But the elf felt horrible with the thought of stealing someone's livelihood, even if it was for a decently good cause. Suddenly, a low profile on the water caught his eye.

"A boat?" he asked himself, peering out over the water. He considered shouting, but that might draw unnecessary attention. "Damn," he shouted as he set off at a jog, waving his hands in the air, hoping to get the attention of the boat...hoping that whomever was steering it wasn't simply a late pirate. . .

Aidan looked cautiously over the edge of the boat. He saw an elven man, waving his arms. He sat up quickly and paddled over. "If you can help get in, if not go away." he spoke in rough tones, he had not slept for days, and was tired. He wanted to stay in his cot but he felt compelled to stop the pirates. He sat there for a few minutes then began to paddle away. He rowed in silence, headed behind the boat quietly. He pushed the oar deep into the water, pushing the boat faster and faster. He was maybe a league behind the boat, and closing.

He would follow the boat till nightfall if there were no problems up to that point. He would sneak up the side, and steal to the small area behind the float deck. He would then systematically move throughout the deck, picking off one person at a time, maybe two. He would do so as stealthily as he could, and as cleanly. It was all he could do, he was only in soldier mode at this point, and had no time for wartime philosophy or sentiments. These people had killed and stolen, and that was enough to get Aidan's blood boiling. He continued to row in silence.

Aiden continued waving his arms, hoping that he was gaining the attention of someone friendly to his cause. Luckily for him, whomever was steering the small rowboat noticed him and steered the small vessel back towards the shoreline. Aiden smiled in satisfaction, wading a few steps out into the surf to catch the boat as soon as possible.

"If you can help get in, if not go away."

The elf looked up, a bit surprised at the gruff statement. But then, he nodded appreciatively and climbed inside the boat. "Thank you," he muttered before taking a seat opposite this rather silent character. The man rowed the boat in silence, dipping the oars into the dark blue waters and pulling hard. They were moving at a rather quick pace, making it obvious that they would likely close distance with the large pirate ship by nightfall at the latest.

What to do when we arrive? the elf thought, his mind already working to form a plan. Considering the circumstances, Aiden wondered what in the hell he'd gotten himself into. Given the chance to actually think about things, he realized that they were about to face an entire ship full of rather sinister pirates. And from what he'd seen...it was just him and this silent figure against what could very well be overwhelming numbers.

"My name is Aiden," the elf said, shifting his weight and pulling his scabbard from his belt. He placed his sword, sheath and all, on the boat before him. "Going back to your earlier statement, I believe I actually can help...but I wonder what your plans are regarding actually taking that ship down. It's just the two of us...how do you plan on winning exactly?"

"Nice to meet you Aidan, I am Aidan. As to my plan, I was hoping it would fall into place like this; sneak onto the ship in the dead of night, silently of course, Kill the crew one by one, kill the captain, take the stolen goods, taking this and their second dingy, bringing back to the village, where my fellow soldiers will hand it out evenly to the citizens of the town. Then we meet back in the pub for drinks and trenchers of steaming pork." he said all this matter of factly, with a light air to his voice.

He sighed and stopped rowing for a few minutes. The boat was still being propelled in the same direction. He held out a hand for Aidan to shake, a sign of friendship. "Very nice to meet you mister Aidan." he smiled, brushing back his hair. He adjusted his gray skull cap, his knee length coat of the same color. He unbelted his sword, laying it next to the other man's. He breathed in the salty air again, savoring the feel, the taste, the smell. It might be one of his last sensory experiences.

OOC: Don't know if this got across, but this thread was supposed to be set sometime before daybreak. After rereading it, I realized that I neglected to mention the time of day haha.

BinC:"Nice to meet you Aidan, I am Aidan. Then we meet back in the pub for drinks and trenchers of steaming pork."

Ambitious plan, Aiden thought with a smirk. The boat rocked gently as it followed in the wake of the larger pirate vessel. The three masted ship had let to leave the bay, so a decent amount of rowing would have the two men upon their target within the hour. While Aiden appreciated his companion's confidence, he couldn't help but be a bit skeptical--it was them versus a ship, after all.

Aiden took Aidan's extended hand and shook warmly before saying, "If you have soldiers, shouldn't they be coming to help you? We are sort of losing the number's game, after all. . ."

Lumen roamed the deck in an angry silence as his sailors rushed to and fro in an effort to get the ship under speed and out to sea. For some reason, things were just moving more slowly than usual. These usually disciplined, master sailors were sluggish and unfocused for some reason. Lumen squinted as the sun broke over the hills in the distance, slowly scattering the darkness of the bay. The pirate capitain knew that within minutes, his ship would be visible to anyone standing near the bay or the hills overlooking the shore. The last thing he needed were guard boats trailing him into open waters.

"MOVE!" he shouted angrily, roughly pushing a seaman out of his way as he shouted orders to his men. "Move it! I want this ship out of the bay before ten minutes are up, or the lot of ya will be food for the fish!"

As silly as Lumen may have sounded, his men jumped to attention. They all knew that Lumen was more than capable of carrying out his threat to the letter. . .

Aidan nodded, "Yeah, well we were on our break, and my 'brothers in arms' were drunk or asleep" he said, his voice edged with venom. He sighed and continued to row. He was hungry and had no food, the last time he had eaten was the day before, and that had been a piece of old bread and cheese. He heard his stomach rumble, and groaned inwardly. "So, Aidan, why may I ask, are you chasing after this man. Normally people don't just leap into a boat with a total stranger and try to defeat a pirate captain and his murderous crew." he wore a crooked smile and laughed a quiet chuckle.

"Yeah, well we were on our break, and my 'brothers in arms' were drunk or asleep"

Aiden stifled a grin at his companion's obvious disgust with his former comrades. Seems he'll be more dependable, the elf thought, keeping his eye on the large ship before them. Thanks to the prevailing current along the shoreline, their smaller vessel was slowly gaining on the three-masted pirate ship. But even though the distance was steadily closing, it did nothing to change the fact that they had no real plan once they were on board.

"So, Aidan, why may I ask, are you chasing after this man. Normally people don't just leap into a boat with a total stranger and try to defeat a pirate captain and his murderous crew."

Aiden smirked a bit before shrugging his shoulders offhandedly. "I'm chasing after him to stop him," he said, "The fact that I jumped into your boat is simply a matter of chance. I would've swum after him if I had to." The elf went silent for a moment before laughing and saying, "No I wouldn't have!"

He became serious after a few moments and continued, "I really am here to stop him, though. I've been tracking that pirate for days along the coast. I'm usually too late to even catch a glimpse of his vessel, much less give chase. Something must be off for him to be moving so slowly today. . ."

Lumen shouted orders as he stalked the deck, always having at least one man keep an eye on the approaching rowboat. His lookout had already reported that one of those drawing close was an elf...meaning that he wasn't a pirate. That alone was enough to have Lumen get the entire ship on alert.

"Secure the prisoners downstairs," he shouted as he moved towards his own cabin. "And prepare a nice welcome for our visitors!"

"They're comin' aboard, captain?" the first mate asked, clearly confused. "We can shoot 'im from 'ere."

"I want them aboard," Lumen said without even turning. "They've come all this way, after all. It'd be rude to refuse 'em aboard. . ."

Aidan nodded, "Well, it is hard to find such a kind hearted man as you friend." he said with a small smile. He looked back at the ship, and sighed. By know, he guessed, they would have been seen. "Aidan. I have a plan to get on the ship. We move over to the wakes of the ship, tumultuous ground. He then flip the boat over, and remove a few articles of clothing to make them belive we have drowned. We, however, are directly under the boat. Our heads will not be underwater, and we will kick our way, slowly to the side of the boat. We then board...and then gods know what we will do then. I know I sound mad...but, what do you say?"

Aiden couldn't help but betray a small smirk as his companion outlined their plan of attack. It sounded...well...foolish and unlikely to succeed. Unless they completed such a transition quickly, they'd only look as if they were trying half-heartedly to drown. Any experienced sea captain knew that while the wake of a large ship could be treacherous for smaller vessels, there was no way a sturdy rowboat would flounder so much as to overturn.

Which is exactly why it might work, the elf thought. While he wasn't an experienced sea captain, he figured that if they swam under the larger pirate ship like Aidan suggested, they just might be able to pull the plan off...with a slight hitch of course.

"How long would we be swimming for, exactly?" Aiden asked, "If we wait too long, we'll be too tired to fight once we finally board the ship. Do you think we should trail them in the boat for a bit longer? Perhaps we can wait until we reach the peninsula at the mouth of the bay. The waters there are notoriously rougher than the rest of the bay...perhaps we could pull of a more convincing performance?

Aidan nodded, "I did not think of that. I am not familiar with this area, but that sounds like it just might work. We wait until we reach the peninsula, flip out boat, swim under their ship; which should only take a few minutes, and reemerge on the other side. We sneak up the side, and to the small deck behind the wheelhouse. We then climb belowdeck. We wait in the brig until dark, and then clear out the ship while they are sleeping." he said this quickly, almost feverishly. He smiled and took a deep breath, "Sorry, just got a little caught up in the moment." he laughed nervously and continued rowing.

We wait in the brig until dark, and then clear out the ship while they are sleeping...Sorry, just got a little caught up in the moment."

Aiden smiled at his partner's enthusiasm...but still knew that their plan was still recklessly dangerous. There was still the problem of being able to make such a swim without being detected. If the waters near the peninsula were treacherous for boats, he could only imagine how hard it would be to swim through.

Not to mention the fact that I doubt we'd be able to stay hidden belowdecks for very long, the elf thought. From what he'd seen of the pirate captain so far, he knew that the man was horribly meticulous with everything he did. He doubted a substantial amount of the crew was even allowed to sleep. This captain seemed to be a man who stayed one step ahead of his opponents.

But despite this hesitation, for the moment, Aiden had no better plan to offer. For now, they'd have to stick with being daring, and a bit foolish. "Let's save our strength then," the elf said, leaning back against the edge of the boat. "The current here leads out of the bay. We should be able to rest up a bit before having to make our move. . ."

"Any sign of that boat?" Lumen growled as he patrolled the deck. He stood lazily against the rail as his first mate came closer.

"They're keeping about a shiplength's behind us, cap'n," he replied, "They're driftin' in the wake, at the moment. But they'll be sunk befor' long, I think."

"And why's that?" Lumen asked, curious.

The first mate pointed past his captain towards the mouth of the bay. "There's no way they'd be able ta make it past those breakers by the peninsula. Those things'll be hard enough for us to get by, much less a liddle boat. They'll be fish food befor' tomorrow."

Lumen stood silently before straightening and walking towards the bow of the ship. "Prepare the crew for the breakers, then," he ordered, "And make sure that boat sinks the way you think it will. . ."

Aidan nodded and put down the oars. He nestled down into the seat, and rested his head against the small prow. He felt the wind brush against his face, flow through his short cropped hair. A few gulls cried overhead, and the waves lapped against the sides of the boat. "So Aidan, how long have you known Lumen? It seems like you two have met before, at least a few times." he spoke quietly, almost a whisper; his throat hurt from all the yelling the night before, screaming over the shouts of drunken soldiers and sailors. "To my commanding officer, he was a new threat, but I do not believe it so."

OOC: Wrong account again?? lol, jk

BinC: "So Aiden, how long have you known Lumen? It seems like you two have met before, at least a few times."

Aiden shook his head as he too lay back against the prow of the ship. "I've never actually chased him before," he replied, "But I know of a few other rangers who have wanted to corner him for a while. He's not quite a new threat, but he is relatively new to these waters."

The elf cleared his throat, noting how the sound echoed over the still water, before continuing. "I was told that Lumen was far craftier than most other pirate captains around here. I believe it's that craftiness that makes him such a dangerous character. Then again, you have to reckon with the experienced crew at his back. I heard that they were from more southern coasts, but they could easily be a threat here if left unchecked."

Aiden paused a moment before asking, "You say you have a commanding officer? If there are other men, why didn't you bring them with you? Surely you didn't actually start out intending to fight an entire ship by yourself, did you?"
