| Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit. Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own. In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins. There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free. Create a character now! If you're already a member, you can log into your account below: |

It was dark. Not just the normal darkness, where there is lack of light. This was the darkness of the absolute absence of light. It was a heavy oppressive darkness that pressed against your bones and weighed you down. Even the little light he had did nothing to deter this darkness. The light of a small stone he had cast a minor spell on was still not enough to penetrate the blackness. So, he kept walking, holding his stone in one hand, his staff in the other. He prodded his staff ahead of him like a blind man, which at this point, he was equal too. He heard the gentle padding of feline feet next to him. It was Matt, his cat. Andrew could only see a few feet around him but he saw his friend. He did not need a shining stone to find his way in the darkness. Andrew envied him. Andrew did like the dark, only when he had a nice candle, or fire. When he could not see around him, thoughts crept into his mind, spreading dark tentacles through his body, drenching his spine with ice water. He shivered and quickened his pace. He had no idea where he was going. He knew there would be an exit somewhere. He had enough food for a few days, and had a little light. Andrew heard a small shuffle from behind him. It was quiet, maybe a shifting rock. He continued, but it happened again. Andrew pushed dark thoughts away. He heard a growl, from behind him, close. He picked up his pace, to a brisk walk. The growling continued, and was paired, then tripled. Soon a chorus of howls and growls filled the air, their harmonies weaving around each other. He started to jog, thoughts of demon dogs and dark angels sneaked into his skull. He heard the scraping of paws on stone behind him. That pushed him over the edge. He began to run, Matt out in front, sending Andrew images of a turn every now and then to make sure he would not ram into a wall. Andrew dared once to look behind him. He saw red and orange eyes glowing and bobbing. Then, the got closer, and he saw them just a bit more. They were dogs, but they were pitch black. That is to say, they were pitch black where there was flesh and fur. Some of the dog was just bone, or just muscle with no wrapping. Somehow Andrew picked up his already amazing speed. Thoughts of death and destruction came into his mind. Being torn apart by demon dogs were not his idea of fun. He did not stop running, and he did not look back. |

Nireza had been following some sort of demonic looking creature for about a day now. Somehow, it had kept just out of reach of her spells. She was now following it through the tunnels. Nireza had decent low-light vision, which enabled her to see at night, but now that she was underground, there was absolutely no light for her to see with. Despite this, she was able to make out the shapes of objects, but not enough to avoid obstacles. She was able to follow the creature by feeling its evil aura and seeing the occasional bit of motion. She had transformed her morphing blade into a long staff and was using it to feel her way in the dark. Doing this, she was able to maintain a decent pace. After a while of following the creature through the tunnels, she noticed a slight point of light in the distance. She moved faster toward it. It wasn't long before the dim light was enough for her to make out the tunnel she was walking through well enough to dodge obstacles. She could also tell that the point of light was being held by a person, who was seemingly being stalked by several creatures. She couldn't tell what the creatures were, but they seemed to have an evil aura coming off of them. Just then, the man who had been holding the light started running, and the creatures followed. Nireza followed as well, able to maintain her distance from the light. She decided that her best plan of action would be to get the creatures' attention to take the pressure off the man with the light. She pulled out her wand and fired a white bolt at one of the creatures. The spell illuminated the cavern for a split second, enabling Nireza to clearly see the man. He was holding an illuminated stone and a staff. The spell struck one of the creatures, leaving it immobilized on the ground. |

The tunnel ahead of Andrew was suddenly lit by a bright white light, only to reveal a large slab of dark stone, onto which almost all of his face was now present. He pulled his face away, and turned around, to see a large black dog with red eyes jumping toward him. He yelled, ducked, and did a forward somersault. He heard a solid thunk from behind him. He turned to see the creature laying unconscious. He threw down the lite stone, muttered a few words, and his staff burst into a bright, white light. The light lite a section of tunnel about ten feet by ten feet. He saw another one of these dogs come walking into the ring of light. Its head was hanging low to the ground. It's eyes were red, and its mouth hung open. From it's throat emitted a fierce growl, and its slavering jaws dripped with fire. Where the beast stepped, the ground was scorched, and turned cherry red for a few moments. The two circled each other, staring into each other's eyes. The beast leaped into the air at the man's face, and was promptly swatted aside, with a swing of a staff, into the wall of the hall. He felt a burning pain erupt in his left leg and cried out in pain. He swung his head around, to see a demon dog biting his calf. He brought his staff down hard on the beast's head with a sickening crunching of bone. The bite was released, and Andrew walked over to the second dog, repeating the action performed previously. He looked in the direction from where the flash of light had come from. He saw a woman, a beautiful elven woman. She held a wand, and was standing near the unconscious body of another demon dog. He walked over to her, still holding his glowing staff. He looked down at the dog and asked, "Do you know what the hell these things are?" his voice quavered slightly with fear. |

Nireza had seen Andrew heading toward the slab. She was about to warn him, but he stopped just in time. The light from his staff allowed her to see easily. From the way he swung his staff, she could tell that he was inexperienced in its use. Despite this, he had managed to fling one of the dog creatures aside. Before she could blast away the dog at his calf, she saw him smash it with his staff. He had done pretty well for his lack of experience. However, she saw one more demon dog hiding just beyond the circle of light, ready to strike him. Just as it launched itself into the air, she finished her white bolt spell, and the orb of holy energy flew toward the creature, flinging it back into the shadow, dead. Nireza saw the man walking toward her. She could see an expression of fear in his face, and she heard it in his voice. She replied, "I don't know precisely what they are, but they're obviously demonic. I don't know about you, but I can feel the evil aura coming off of them. It's weaker now that they're dead, but I can definitely tell it's still there. I can't tell for certain yet, but I think there are more demonic creatures headed this way, so keep that staff ready." The new group was far enough away that it was still difficult for Nireza to discern their auras against the ones lingering from the creatures they had just killed. "I came in here chasing one of the demon dogs we just killed. Why are you here, and what's your name? I'm Nireza." |

"I'm Andrew, I was lost above ground and had no idea where I was, then I fell down a hole, and was thusly chased by demon dogs." he motioned for Nireza to follow him, and made his way to the end of the tunnel, where the large slab was. The stone was rounded on the edges, and was darker than the surrounding stone. It had a thin gap surrounding it, and when Andrew placed his cheek up against the gap he felt a little air press against his face. "Can you help me move this?" he paused for a few moments, trying to pry it away from the wall, "You wouldn't happed to have a crowbar would you?" as he was feeling around the gap he felt a small raised bump. He pressed down, and the door seemed to swing on a hinge inward. Inside was a large, open cavern. There was a large black lake, with a small island in the middle, made of dark, blocky stone. Behind him, Andrew heard a faint barking, quiet at first, and singular. Then, after a few moments it was joined by more, and more. Soon the cavern was filled with the cacophonous baying of hounds. Andrew walked through the open arch and prepared for an attack. |

Nireza listened with interest to Andrew's story. It did seem rather unusual for him to be down here in the caverns. She grabbed her morphing weapon, still in staff form and said, "Not exactly, but this might do the trick. I don't exactly have the strength to do a lot of pushing though." Before she had a chance to begin assisting with the door, it gave way, allowing her to see a large lake with an island in the middle. Just then, she heard the sound of the dogs. Her ability to sense their auras confirmed that they were indeed the demonic creatures she had sensed earlier. She walked toward the arch, but stayed ahead of Andrew since from what she had seen, he would have difficulty holding off the incoming attack. She began building an electrical charge to take down a few of the creatures before actually engaging them. She wasn't able to gather the energy from the air as quickly in these caverns, but she had the charge ready by the time she saw the dogs coming around the corner. She began casting the spell that would release the charge, figuring that the dogs would be in range when she finished. She was correct in her assumption. A bolt of lightning flashed from her extended hand, striking the nearest dog. She guided the electrical energy to the next dog and then the next in turn until six of the dogs lay dead. This barely slowed the remaining dogs. They were too close for her to use ranged spells, so she drew her rapier and placed an electric charge on the blade. The first leaped at her, only to impale itself on her blade, but there were still several of the creatures remaining. |

Andrew looked as the dogs rounded the corner, they split into two smaller packs, one for Andrew, the other, Nireza. One dog ran at Andrew, jumping with incredible speed at his head. Andrew managed to duck, and the dog leaped into the lake behind Andrew. It yelped in pain, and when Andrew turned to see what had happened the dog was already gone. He turned his attention on the remaining dogs, who circled him, slavering, mouths dripping fire. One lunged at his leg, but he smacked the end of his staff into its skull. It yelped, but stayed standing. Another bit at his ankle, and Andrew kicked it. They all seemed to be playing with him. In a split second all dogs, lunged at once. One grabbed his staff arm, the other his left leg, another his right thigh, the last his left hand. His limbs were filled with a harsh burning sensation. He dropped his staff noisily to the hard dark ground. He heard another one run up behind him. He spun the one on his hand at the one now in mid air. They both fell to the ground in a mass of limbs and teeth. He used his free hand to pry the jaws of the dogs off of him and throw them into the lake. When they hit the water they, immediately sank like stones. He looked at his new wounds, they were bleeding and burned. He gritted his teeth in pain, he could do nothing about it at this point. He heard more barking from the tunnel outside of the cavern. This was accompanied by one ear shattering bark. It shook the tunnels and Andrew's bones. He shuddered. He felt huge footsteps, perhaps that of an army, shake to floor. He peered out into the darkness and saw two, huge red eyes; the size of Andrew's head. He saw the vague outline of a gargantuan dog, with some kind of humanoid figure seated on top of it. The dog creature reared it's monstrous head and howled. It made Andrew's ears ache, made the world spin before him. Andrew was scared. |

Most of the remaining dogs had split off to attack Andrew before Nireza had released her lightning spell, but a few were still attacking her. She used her rapier to quickly parry the attacks, although the dogs were quick enough to stay alive a bit longer. The dogs then all came at once, but Nireza slashed through them. Despite her quick attacks, one of the dogs managed to get through and bit down on her ankle. A second later, that dog was no longer able to bite anymore, as Nireza had stabbed it in the back of its neck. Nireza's ankle burned where the dog had just bit her. Nireza then turned to assist Andrew just in time to see him throw the dogs into the water. Apparently these dogs were vulnerable to the water. Whether it was weakness to water or weakness to this water, Nireza didn't know, but it was definitely something to take advantage of. Just then, Nireza noticed a massive dog creature approaching. She quickly cast a healing spell on Andrew, healing the worst of his wounds and then turned to face the massive creature. The howling was hard on her ears, but she was able to retain her composure. Nireza said, "Don't let it get you. I'm going to try something." She then ran forward, toward the beast and its rider. She then launched herself into the air, just high enough that the beast's attempt to catch her in its mouth in midair failed. She landed lightly in the creature's head, her rapier still in her hand. The rider immediately began attacking her. Being on her feet, she had somewhat of an advantage, especially since she was agile enough to stay on the creature's back. Despite this advantage, she wasn't able to quickly finish off the rider, as he parried her initial attacks. |

Andrew was filled with a sudden warmth, and felt his wounds close. He still felt pain, but it was less noticeable. He nodded at Nireza as she leaped for the rider of the dog-demon. He saw, from under the huge dog's legs, several smaller versions of the dogs sprint out. These dogs seemed different, their paws were wreathed in fire, there eyes did not just glow red like the others, they burned with red fire. Their bodies seemed to be just shadows, incorporeal yet substantial. Andrew could only hear their barking, not their paws hitting the ground, he saw the ground beneath them melt with extreme heat, and their jaws drip with fire and shadow. Andrew was paralyzed with fear, until he saw one get within range of his staff. He shook his head and swung at the demon dog, sending it careening into the wall with a thud, but Andrew had lost focus. A dog jumped through the air and grabbed onto his right forearm. He felt his arm grow cold, and saw images of his family being ripped apart by these dogs. He cried out in pain, and ran for the cave wall. He slammed the arm with the dog on it into the wall repeatedly, until it finally let go. He saw several of these beasts running through the gloom, at him. He turned on his heels and ran for the far end of the lake. He saw a few stones, and leaped for the first. He hop-skipped from stone to stone, until he reached the island. He saw the dogs, by now an entire pack of at least thirty, sprint over the water. Andrew swore, and readied his staff. |

Nireza stepped just out of range of the rider, still standing on the beast's head and placed an electric charge on her weapon. She then charged forward again. She parried the rider's expected attack, throwing it wide so that he was left open. She quickly capitalized on the move and stabbed the rider in the neck, mortally wounding him. Despite the injury, he was able to make a final attack. Nireza parried the blow, but it was so powerful that it threw her off of the creature's back. She struck the ground on her back but managed to break the fall somewhat, losing her grip on her blade in the process. The fall caused her some pain, but she realized that it could quite easily have been worse. She fought through the pain, quickly getting back on her feet. She was about to attack the large creature again, but she then saw the ghostlike dogs rushing Andrew, who was on the island. These ones weren't weak to water like the previous ones. To complicate things further, these dogs were running on the water. Nireza pulled out her wand in less than a second and soon had a white bolt flying toward one of the dogs near Andrew. She telepathically retrieved her dropped weapon and ran toward the lake. Instead of using the stones to reach the island, she leaped into the air. She landed on the island, just in time to face the dogs. Her blade made short work of the first ones that dared to approach her. |

Andrew was knocked down by one of the dogs. It had jumped through the air, and somehow jumped through Andrew. As it passed through him, he felt a cold, spread throughout his body, he went numb, breathing was hard, his skin burned, he could not hear nor speak. The dog stood over his head, barked what could have been construed as a command, then started to attack Nireza. At the same moment, four other dogs, grabbing Andrew by all of his limbs, dragged him under the surface of the black water. As soon as he was under water, he found that it was extremely cold, extremely heavy, and time seemed to slow drastically. He had taken a large breath before he had entered the water, and he felt like he could stay down here for a water. He had regained control of his movements, but not his hearing, he could hear nothing but the soft rushing of water. He saw dark shapes move beyond the light of his staff. His eyes grew accustomed to the absence of light, and he saw that the dogs were bolting in wide circles around him, mere blurs of black and read. Their feet and eyes still burned under the water, and they moved with the same speed. They did not move to strike, so Andrew swam upward, trying to break the surface. He was just about to raise his had to break through the water, but heard a sharp cracking sound, and saw a thin layer of ice form, all around the lake. It was thin, so Andrew tried to break it, but it would not. He looked down and saw the dogs charge him. ((Locked for judging! It will be reopened after the contest is finished. ^_^)) -Seth |

Nireza saw the dog pass right through Andrew, bringing him to the ground. She thought it was a bit strange that she had just killed a few with her blade, but this one had just passed right through someone. Either this dog was exceptional, or the enchantment on her blade was enough to actually cause them injury. At any rate, other dogs now were dragging Andrew into the water, and Nireza couldn't help him because the dog that had just attacked Andrew was now charging her way. Then, it was flying in the air toward her. Very quickly, she moved out of the dog's path, pulled out her dagger, and stabbed it into the incoming dog, hoping that the holy energy contained within the weapon would be enough to deal with this creature. The force of the impact seemed to be more than it should have been, and she felt a strange cold in her hand, which quickly ran down to her elbow, causing her to drop the weapon. However, the dog appeared to be worse off than she was. Despite the impact she had felt, the dog had passed right through her weapon and part of the hand holding it. The interaction between the opposing energies had been what generated the force, as well as a crackling sound, similar to someone being burned by a very hot item. The dog, while still alive, had taken significant injuries from the weapon. Nireza could feel that its evil aura had weakened. The dog, understandably, seemed to be hesitant to charge this elf woman again. It seemed to be a good move on its part until Nireza, taking advantage of the hesitation, cast a white bolt spell at the dog. This was enough to finish off the already injured dog. By now, a sheet of ice had formed on the lake. Nireza could see that Andrew was trapped beneath it. She also noticed that the dogs seemed to be ignoring her for the time being. Nireza cast a healing spell on her arm, which cured the cold. She retrieved her dagger and returned the weapon to its sheath on her belt. She then aimed her wand and cast a white bolt at the ice just above Andrew's head, hoping to give him a way out. |

Andrew felt and heard the sound of ice breaking, and immediatly flung himself on top of the ice, away from the dogs who swum beneath. He crawled up onto the island, only to be followed by these accursed pups. He swore loudly, several times and stood. A dog launched himself at Andrew's face, but was quickly swiped away with an angry swing of a staff. This went on for what seemed like hours, but hopefully with the help of Nireza, most of the dogs would eventually either be drowned, or killed with a bolt of light. All that was left was the huge dog, and a small pack of ghastly dogs, some of the kind that had passed directly through Andrew. The small pack immediatly headed for Nireza, ignoring Andrew. The huge dog simply stared at Andrew, and waited for a move. ((sorry about the power-play, it is now edited)) |

Nireza assisted Andrew in finishing off the regular dogs. Now she could see that what remained was a half dozen of the insubstantial dogs and the single massive dog. She said, "Try breaking the ice underneath that one!" She faced the approaching ghastly dogs. By now, she had figured out that the only effective way to injure these was with holy energy, which for her meant using either her dagger or her white bolt spells. She aimed her wand at the pack and brought one down with a white bolt. A second one fell in similar manner only shortly afterward. These dogs had not been killed, but they would be unable to move for a few minutes because of the pain inflicted on them by the spell. Nireza knew that the dogs were moving too fast for her to cast a third white bolt, so she pulled out her dagger. The dogs leaped at her. They made one mistake: they all came flying in at about her head level, the lowest coming at her upper chest. She made the obvious choice and ducked, allowing the dogs to fly over her head. Even better, she placed her dagger in the path of the lowest dog such that it went head first into the flat of the weapon, not passing through her hand this time. The crackle of the warring energies signaled that the move had been successful. She stood back up to see that only three of the dogs were still in action, the one looking rather mutilated from its encounter with her weapon. She quickly pulled off a white bolt as the dogs turned around and prepared to attack again. |

Andrew nodded to Nireza and ran onto the thick ice. He slid for several feet, until he was almost fully in front of the huge dog. The dog snarled, as fire dripped from its muzzle, melting the ground beneath. "Come here doggy, come come. Good doggy..." Andrew called out to the huge canine, watching as it moved slowly toward him. Andrew expected to hear a sharp crack as it stepped onto the ice, but was startled when the ice seemed to thicken, Andrew swore as the dog seemed to smile. Andrew gripped his staff tighter and breathed the words silently, "Come on doggy, come here boy." he whistled a long, low whistle and the dog charged. |
