Kaess was amazed as they flew through the night faster than he imagined possible. The sun was just coming to noon when they landed in front of large gates to the deep cities. He got down and his father entered first into the cave, just fitting at first before transforming into a grey haired elf with blue eyes and long golden blond hair. He smiled "Well come now let us find a room to rest in and then go searching for our elusive prey." He walked off as if knowing where to go. He still had some aura, but few would recognize it as a dragon aura now. Kaess decided to follow shrugging to Aiden, whom he hadn't been able to talk to do to the speed of the ride. "Well I don't know exactly what path we took here, but at least we are here. Do you need any help I know you didn't do well flying before and that was one rough trip." He was tired himself and was looking forward to a rest. He looked around and found it amazing that nobody was at this entrance. It looked old and in disuse. 'Probably why dad chose this place.' He waited a few moments for Aiden's answer helping him if he needed it. Kaess then would proceed to follow his father who was leading them through the tunnels towards what he hopped would be a bed. |

The journey was both quick and quiet as the trio flew through the night air. Aiden said nothing, still focused on finding Zieg and trying to figure out just what was going through his enemy's head. Either way, it will end here, the elf thought. Hopefully, Eonian would be waiting for them when they arrived in the Deep Cities...but how exactly they would meet up would be another story. Aiden was shaken from his thoughts as they made their final descent into the jagged mountains. The elf briefly wondered which entrance to the city they'd be using, but the question was quickly answered as they landed in front of a set of dilapidated gates. While he wasn't sure, Aiden thought that they might have been approaching the cities from the east. "Then these aren't the main gates anymore," he muttered as he clambered off of the dragon's back. "They'd be deeper in now...at least, I hope so." "Well I don't know exactly what path we took here, but at least we are here. Do you need any help I know you didn't do well flying before and that was one rough trip." Aiden waved off the concern and said, "I'm fine now, I think. You kind of get used to it after awhile. I actually think I'm pretty numb to the whole thing." He chuckled as he made sure his cloak and sword were secured at his side as he entered the tunnels after Kaess' father. . . |

Kaess nodded and followed his father with Aiden following shortly behind. The tunnel look well carved and seemed to have been carved out of solid granite, but it was obvious that it hadn't been used for ages as their were cobwebs cleaning to most of the corners and ofter crossing the path of the travelers. The tunnel also had many twists and turns as they got deeper Kaess was glad of his dragon eyes as it got more difficult to see and darker. He followed his father who seemed to not hesitate in which turn to take or what way to go. After an hour he asked, "How long has it been since you were last here anyways? This path looks fairly old." His father did not look back, but responded "About seventy five years and to think it was such a well used path back then. I should say we will arrive at the destination in about three hours do watch out for the spiders they tend to be a bit larger than most down here being about four feet across that is. " His tone seemed unconcerned, but Kaess supposed this wasn't much of a concern for a dragon. He however, did not want to run into spiders of that size. It especially in these dark tunnels. He moved a bit more carefully from that point on watching his surroundings and being more careful not to run into webs which may alert the hungry spiders. 'Why did he chose this place is seventy five years so little him that he didn't realize things may have changed. I hope this turns out alright.' |

Aiden kept silent throughout most of the journey, but as they descended deeper and deeper into the realm of the dwarves, he faced increasing difficulties. Unlike Kaess or his father, the elf possessed no special ability to see in the dark. About thirty minutes of so into their descent, the ambient light from the surface had completely disappeared. This left only the sound of footfalls ahead as Aiden's sole guide on the walk. He tried sticking close to the granite walls and running his hands along them to stay on track. However, this usually ended in his hand getting caught in a patch of sticky spider webs or the like. I really hope none of these things are occupied, Aiden thought as he moved along. Finally, he could take the darkness no longer. Drawing his sword in the darkness, he bowed his head and made a quick incantation. "Runya," he whispered. Again, his blade became wreathed in a magical, red hot flame. Aiden used his control over fire to form the flame into one that gave off a soft red glow and very little heat. The effort tired the elf a bit, but the exertion was well worth it. "There we go," he muttered, raising his blade in front of him to serve as a makeshift torch. "That's much better." Nonetheless, the elf was very worried that the trick would inadvertently draw the attention of a few less than savory characters. . . |

Kaess noted when Aiden lit up his sword having forgotten the elf's inability to see in the darkness. 'Well at least he solved that problem.' The continued on as the webs got thicker and his father kept moving forward somehow avoiding breaking most of the spider webs. 'How does he do that?' He thought about this as Aiden followed. He then said, "Um is there another way the webs seem to be getting thicker and that usually means getting closer to the center of a spiders lair." "Don't worry the one at the center of these webs is an old pet of my friend's he won't harm us, it is his kids you two need to worry about. Oh and Aiden don't burn the webs in after another fifty feet they tend not to like fire burning their work. Breaking it is fine, burning is bad. Now just keep going and we should be fine." "Um... I suppose we shall try. Let me break a path for you Aiden." He started to part a path for Aiden to so he would have an easier time getting through. He used his claws making clean cuts as to avoid being wrapped up in webs, but they still stuck to various parts of his body regardless. They may travel this way for about one and a half hours. 'These tunnels are creepy, who in their right mind keeps a spider for a pet. For that matter where does dad know this guy. I hope he isn't dead or something. Heck even I have outlived some friends.' Kaess continued to worry as things continued on into the tunnels. |

"Oh and Aiden don't burn the webs in after another fifty feet they tend not to like fire burning their work. Breaking it is fine, burning is bad. Now just keep going and we should be fine." Wonderful, Aiden thought sarcastically. He began wondering just where this dragon was leading them. Their destination was the Deep Cities of the dwarves, not a spider's lair. The farther they traveled, the more convinced Aiden was that they were on a rather circuitous route to their goal. Nonetheless, he kept his protest to himself. He made sure to stay behind Kaess and walked along the path he'd prepared in the tunnel. He also took care to keep his blade away from the spiderwebs as best he could. While he wasn't particularly afraid of spiders, there was no point in drawing more attention than necessary. Though we have a dragon here, the elf thought, What creature in its right mind would attack it? After another minute or so of walking, he ventured a question. "How much farther until we reach your friend's lair?" Aiden asked aloud. . . |

The response came shortly after. "Well I would say another hour and a half if we keep up this pace just be careful and don't get startled. Garmed's pet tends to have odd ways of showing affection. Just don't fight it and you should be fine. If not ..... well we can deal with it." He seemed to do a shrug, but it wasn't quite clear like a person unused to moving in that way for a long time. For another half hour they trudged on until they came to thick wall of web that was cut down by Kaess's dad. He stepped in side and they came out into a large cave that had several remains and captured animals of all sizes wrapped up in webs. Kaess could see that the floor was covered in the webs and something huge was up on the roof of the cave. He couldn't make it out perfectly, but it must have been almost ten feet across. He hesitated before crossing and kept an eye on the thing. 'Jeeze I am just barely seeing it must be had for Aiden.' "Aiden just be wary, but there is an enormously large thing on the roof, my only guess is that this is the spider and I hope it is a pet." He father walked further into the cave without even looking up and seemed unconcerned about it. 'Well at least one of us is calm.' was Kaess' last thought before trying to catch up to his dad. |

"Well I would say another hour and a half if we keep up this pace just be careful and don't get startled." Aiden's shoulders drooped in the darkness. Why didn't we simply use one of the closer entrances then? the elf thought, knowing quite a few ways into the cities of the deep. Nonetheless, he couldn't voice such opposition aloud. Apparently, Kaess' dad felt the need to come this way, so there must have been a purpose. However, Aiden couldn't help but feel anxious about not being able to head directly to their destination. As time passed, the webs grew thicker and Aiden had to take greater care with his sword. "This is ridiculous," he muttered softly, shifting his sword for what seemed to be the hundredth time as they entered a massive chamber with a high ceiling. Aiden didn't even attempt to look around, knowing full well that he wouldn't be able to see much, if anything. He took Kaess' word for what was there and continued forward, hoping that their journey was nearing a close. We'd better not have come here to simply be attacked by a blasted spider, Aiden thought, his patience running thin. . . |

They walked until they were in the center and then the large object moved it dropped down and the legs surround them and at least a pair came at each of them. His dad seemed to not care as the legs reached him first and then.......Kaess was surprised .... they were tickling him and soon a pair came and did the same to him. He was soon laughing as the legs seemed quite good at this. The legs continued to attempt to do this for about five minutes. "hohoheha.....Okay enough you silly spider ....ha why don't you .....ah go open the path to your master .... ah I need to speak with him." The giant spider then stopped and parted it's own web for them down another path. "Thanks I will be sure to bring you a treat next time I come." The spider seemed to sway oddly. Kaess thought 'And I thought I had seen strange things. Is that the equivalent of wagging it's tail.' He slowly got up still hurting from laughing too much and moved after his father after catching his breath. 'I must admit this is the strangest of my experiences so far.' After the rest of the journey passed they arrived in a small passage way that had one exit on the roof of the tunnel with a ladder next to it. It was a dead end, but Kaess' father announced this was the end. |

Aiden continued walking, oblivious to the mass that was swiftly dropping to the chamber floor. The only warning received was the pair of huge legs that came towards Kaess' father. The elf looked up suddenly, finally noticing the black bulk that stood above them. "Oh dear," Aiden said, more surprised than afraid. He rolled, avoiding the pair of legs that came towards him then stood quickly to gauge the best way to attack the beast. "We should go for its free legs!" Aiden shouted, running towards the pair of legs the spider was using to stay upright. He raised his sword as he ran, preparing to strike, when he suddenly heard...laughter. "Wha?" the elf asked as he turned to see the spider legs tickling his two companions. The elf's jaw dropped as he witnessed the sight. Then two legs came moving towards him ever so slowly. "No thank you," he said aloud, not sure if the spider would understand. Nonetheless, he edged away slowly until the rather odd episode came to an end. When it did, Aiden moved forward after Kaess and his father to an apparent dead end. "Nice," the elf muttered under his breath, raising his still flaming sword to get some idea of where they were. Suddenly, the elf perked up noticeably as he noted a few markings along the wall. Wait, would this happen to be a secret entrance into the city? he thought excitedly. . . |

Kaess's Dad then knocked on the wall and yelled out. "Hellkard open your back door! I am tired and would like some food. Plus you get to meet my kid." He turned to the others and said as if in an after thought, "You two may want to step aside the back way goes through the fordge vent system so when the door opens there is some hot air. Burns those who aren't immune for the first few minutes." Kaess backed up against the wall quickly not being completely fire immune like his dad. 'Well I guess I got the absentmindedness from him. You think he could have told us sooner.' "Father do you at least think you could warn us before asking a person to open a door that could burn us next time." Just then the wall opened in a place where it just seemed not possible and any markings had clearly pointed away from this spot. Steam, soot and a smell of rotten eggs poured out. The door opened wider and Kaess dad just stood in the center of it. Kaess pressed against the wall avoiding touching the fumes. About five minutes latter the smoke was clearing and a dwarf in a mask came out. His beard was covered in soot, but it was still clear that it was graying or white. The dwarf was only 4'2", but he looked strong for an old dwarf and he had a hammer on his right hip, with a finely made pair of axes on his back. "Here you had company with you so I brought a few masks to help them threw. Come I have missed the only friend that can drink this old dwarf under." He looked at both Kaess and Aiden and handed each a mask. "I am guessing the gold one is yours?" A nod confirmed this. "Well then the other one is a might crazy to be traveling with you.... hahahah .... I like him already lets go now. I want to close this up before all the heat escapes ya know." Kaess followed the talkative dwarf too busy putting on the mask, which was a bit complicated to speak in return. He was glad of the mask, because even if it was cooler the air was clearly not the healthiest to walk through. They soon walked through a hot tunnel for a few feet before coming into a dwarven smithery. There was a small side room that made it clear it was the dwarf's home too. He also introduced his son's Mardan and Tolmad, and his daughter Clena. All of them had black hair and the boys had heavy beards already adults. They also had hammers and at least one axe like their father. Clena's axe was slightly lighter version, but still a fine weapon. This was clearly not a place to attack if you valued your skin. His wife was if asked dead. There was also much sound outside making it clear that they were in a main part of one of the deep cities. He offered them seats after closing the 'back door' and served some ale. Kaess managed to say some thanks before sitting down fairly tired from the trip and looking forward to some sleep soon. |

Aiden kept his silence as the seemingly dead end before them suddenly turned into a secret passageway into the home of a rather grizzled dwarf. Well that was a surprise, the elf thought, barely noticing the heat, but recoiling at the smell. However, having spent a bit of time at weapon shops across the continent, he recognized the stench immediately. A smithy? Aiden took the mask that the dwarf so politely offered before stepping into the humble abode. He noted the three stalwart dwarves that also inhabited the home, admiring their well made weaponry and pieces of armor. This must be a rather respected armory if they have such high quality pieces, the elf thought, keeping a respectful silence, but allowing his eyes to wander. However, part of the elf wondered why on earth they'd been brought to such a place. He wasn't the patient type at all and to say that they had been led here without much explanation would've been an understatement. He fidgeted nervously, filled with energy that was just waiting to be spent in the dwarven cities. . . |

Kaess's dad sat down with them and Helkard brought them each a strong dwarven ale to quench their thirst though though the one he had in his own hand and the one he handed to Kaess's father seemed different and smelled of alcohol so strong that it over powered some of the fordge's smell. Kaess just sipped at his ale letting the two others talk for the moment being too unfamiliar with the place. Helkard started speaking then, "Now then my friend why be you sneaking in the back door, I know many of your kind aren't always welcome down here, but you are and you know it." Kaess thought 'I some how hope this will answere why we just walked past a giant spider.' as he watched as his father downed the tankard in one go and then responded to the dwarf. "Simple my old friend I did not want anyone to know I was here and your pet tends to keep people away from that path even if he is mostly harmless. Second I need your skill to fix these, you made them ages ago, but I need them back in full shape with the magic fully reinforced if I am going to finish my hunt." Kaess watched with another surprised look as his dad pulled a pair of gauntlets for both his hands and feet. They were huge and would probably fit him in dragon form. 'Is he going to stop surprising me at some point. Must have a bag like mine, but wow keeping something like that in there.' was his thought as the weapons took up a good portion of the room. Helkard sighed, "You still on this quest and I suppose your son has gotten involved now too. Well just great you have payment... of course you do other wise you wouldn't come. Clena show them to some beds for some rest, and if you want anything touched up just leave it on the table looks like I have a good heap of work ahead of me. Comon son's start heating up the main fordge we are crafting for a dragon an we should do our best." Clena led them to another room down a flight of stairs and left them with some food saying she should go help her dad. Kaess's dad lay down, "Well we are safe now so any questions you two?" |

Aiden's frustrations mounted as time passed. While he was genuinely grateful for the hospitality their hosts were showing, he wanted more than anything to begin tracking down Eonian...and Zieg. He felt that this diversion was costing precious time that might even allow their quarry to escape the dwarven realms. However, the elf kept his silence, finally learning why they had taken such a deserted route into the mountains. Despite learning the truth, it only made the elf more restless. The elf counted seconds and minutes as they drifted slowly into hours. When they were led to the guest rooms, Aiden sat down heavily on the nearest bed and lay down. He hoped that a quick rest would quiet both his raging emotions and his his restlessness. "Well we are safe now so any questions you two?" Aiden glanced towards Kaess' father and asked, "How much longer until we reach the Deep Cities? I mean no offense, but if we wait too much longer, we might miss our chance to catch our quarry." Aiden paused before continuing again. "Perhaps you could show me the way out and I can do some preliminary searching while we wait?" |

Kaess' father laughed a bit. "When do we reach the deep cities we are in them. Near the center of this city too, walk about an hour and you would see one of the great meeting halls this particular part is known for it's fine smith though the house we are in is respected a bit more then some. Given they are one of the few I know who make things for dragons and can perform dragon crafting a very difficult skill if you aren't a dragon. I know you are impatient, but you haven't had a good rest either so I though those with less endurance than me might need some sleep. It was a long trip and just after a fight, if I was wrong then well I suppose all the better. We can start investigating right away. Kaess you feeling up to it?" Kaess was thinking about what to ask when he was asked the question and looked up a bit quickly, "Ah well I think I could a while longer I don't need to sleep every day and we did get to sort of rest on the flight over. Still I do wonder why you came in this back way, couldn't we have used another entrance? And how do you plan to find these people who we are after any ways?" Nodding a bit he responded " Well good to here you are up to more and I didn't use another entrance, because a dragon entering these tunnels wouldn't go unnoticed normally and well we don't want to scare away the prey now do we. Plus you were being followed and I would like to see things follow you through my friends pet." He smiled a grin that clearly showed he wasn't the humanoid figure he had assumed. "As for how to hunt them it is simple for me. I follow the sent of that vile shade and it may lead us to the others. We can also just listen to rumors which may give us leads. If you or friend have other tracking methods well all the better." Kaess nodded and then looked at Aiden, "Well I suppose that answer my questions for the moment, any others from you Aiden and what do you feel like doing." |
