Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own.

In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins.

There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free.

Guidelines for Local Lore

Local Lore allows members of Imythess to officially document the many additions they have made to the lands of Imythess. Have you written a rich history of your character's local culture and their beliefs? Propose it as Local Lore. Have you created an awesome environment you want other authors to be able to use? Propose it as Local Lore. So long as you're willing to let other members use your ideas, there's no limit to what you can propose!

The rules for submitting Local Lore are as follows:

  • No proposed lore can contradict the official lore of Imythess that is available in the Traveler's Guide. If there are contradictions, you will be asked to edit your submission, otherwise it will be moved to The Creative Corner for you to work on it till it fits within the guidelines.

  • Proposed lore must be substantive and have a sufficient description. Simply posting the name of a town and its geographical region in Imythess is not an adequate amount of information for that lore to be officially documented. Likewise, don't write a lore topic about a NPC or religion you don't want other authors to use.

  • Local Lore topics belong to the original writer. Other role-players should respect the wishes of the original writer and follow any rules they propose for their lore. For example, particularly important NPCs can be designated as "Do Not Kill."

  • Lore that is considered well-written or important enough to Imythess can be promoted to official lore. At this point in time the lore is the property of the board and the original writer can no longer edit it at their leisure. They will still be given credit for the lore.

  • There is a short list of lore types that are reserved as staff-only. These are:
    • Creation - Accounts of how the world/universe were created, and by whom.
    • Deities - There is a finite list of who the gods of Chaon actually are/were; some of whom are NPCs and others who were actual characters (e.g. Laoura, Veronna). Members should refrain from lore topics focusing on the gods or creating new ones. This does not disallow the creation of different religions and worship of powerful entities; that is viewed as something separate that is open to the community.
    • Phenomena - A more difficult-to-define category, best explained by example. Topics like The Essence of Magic that explain the inner workings of how the world functions are reserved for Official Lore written by staff only.

Proposed lore should have the following format:

  • Topic Name: Lore Name

  • Topic Description: Type of Lore (Culture, Religion, Location, Artifact, Person, Organization, Martial Art, etc.)

  • Lore Short Description: Within the topic itself, there should be a short description of the lore that is no longer than a single paragraph. This allows for members who are skimming the lore topics to get an idea of what is included in your topic without having to read a thirty page description. You should also include any restrictions you want other characters to follow when using your lore here (i.e. don't kill these NPcs, don't raze this village, etc.).

  • Lore In-Depth Description: This is a detailed description of the lore. Feel free to go into as much detail as you want so long as it is still pertinent to the proposed lore. You should also provide a more in-depth explanation for any of the rules you listed above pertaining to your lore. Additionally, you may want to include any topics that you feel are pertinent to your Lore (i.e. the first time you describe a town, a topic where a magical artifact is located, etc.).
