Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own.

In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins.

There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free.

The skinsharer turned to stare at the small, dark-skinned child, shaking her head vehemently. Emery did not seem to fully understand. They had met in the woods, the only part of their time together that could be trusted. She knew this because her animal companions had been with them at the feast. Heffy, Hermes, and Artemis had thankfully not been exposed to the nightmare, although she would have welcomed some assistance from her pets. "No no no, you can't lose focus. This is a dream we are sharing. Remember the colors, Emery! How could you see them without me?" Even more suspect was the hut still merrily burning in the background. That image had not come from the child's mind, but rather Vivi's worst fears. There was a howling noise from the surrounding forest but she barely noticed, too at ease with animals to register the nearby wolves as a threat.

Before she could convince the elf of her argument he dashed away. As soon as he disappeared into the undergrowth canines burst out of the trees, snarling and dashing off in the same direction. The skinsharer expected one of the creatures to attack her as well, but instead it cordially greeted her and continued to pursue Emery. "No! Leave him alone!" She started to follow the pack, but for some reason she couldn't keep up with the animals. It was if her limbs were being weighted down, some invisible force keeping her from rushing to the child's aid. Vivi's eyes narrowed and her nostrils flared as she struggled against the unseen barrier, every step forward a small struggle. "No... I am... not... your... plaything!"

Her eyes suddenly opened wide, the irises growing larger until they covered almost her entire eye and her pupils shrinking into vertical slits. She did not seem to even notice as her physiology changed, falling forward onto her hands and knees. Fur spread across her body once more, but this time it was pure white with dark black stripes. Within moments she was in the shape of a albino tigress, identical to the deadly hunter except for her augmented size and vivid green eyes. She immediately began to bound after the wolves, bursting through the invisible barrier with her greater strength. She moved through the forest like a lightning bolt, quickly reaching the last wolf in the pack hunting Emery. She pounced on the smaller canine with a fierce roar, claws digging into the wolf's flank as she bore it down to the ground. Vivi almost immediately rose back to her feet, leaving the injured wolf on the forest floor and continued after the pack, her white muzzle stained with dark, black blood.

Emery ran, but running was something that felt useless. His felt, no matter how furiously he moved his legs, he was barely making progress. He made no progress, he couldn't get away, and he couldn't hide. Tears flowed from his eyes, certain that, in this dream, he was going to die once the wolves caught up. Still, in his dream logic, he still ran, no matter how futile it was, because stopping meant instant death.

A roar, not a howl, rose up behind him. He turned to see one of the wolves fall to something even more terrifying: a great white tiger whose muzzle was covered in the wolf's blood. It rose, something even more powerful than the wolves that dogged, ready to chase down all the pack and then, Emery knew, him.

He screamed, collapsing, curling his hands around his head, crying in primal fear. He felt cold, scared, certain of his demise, listening to the approaching...jingling?

Emery opened his eyes. The curve of a tent faced him, not the bleakness of the forest. He sat up, pushing aside the blanket covering him, and looked up into the collected faces of...the bug people, jingling above him and looking worried as Emery's expression shifted from confusion to realization to pure anger. Emery screamed, lunging at them, swinging, but the fae scattered quickly, leaving the clearing free of jingling. Emery ran out of the tent after them, but had no means of catching up. He panted, letting his rage flow back inside where it could wait until he needed it again. He looked about, lost as to what to do, feeling like he was forgetting something...

Oh, wait, he was.

He turned back to the hut, where Vivianne still slept, caught in the dream. Emery wasn't certain what woke him up, but she'd been nice to him while they slept. He could at least try to get her to awaken. Plus, he could get a bit of vengeance.

He knelt beside her, her face almost sweet in sleep despite the scrunched expression on her that could either be fear or anger. In response, he started slapping her face, over and over again, his face blank as he worked. It didn't work in the dream, but maybe it'd work outside it. Plus, it was kind of funny.

The pack of wolves might have been dangerous in their natural habitat, but they were no challenge to a full-grown albino tigress. She ripped through the creatures with a fierceness that wouldn't be misplaced on a battlefield, ripping the canines apart as quickly as she could catch up with them. Black blood sprayed across the grass, staining her fur. She lost herself, letting the animal's bestial side take over. It was several long minutes before she returned to her sense, standing amidst the mangled wolf carcasses. She breathed in heavily, her flanks heaving after the exertion of battle. None of the creatures were left alive, their torn and lifeless bodies scattered across the woods. Vivianne looked around in search of her companion, but there was no sight of the small, black-skinned child. Her feline eyes opened in terror, a soft purr escaping her muzzle. Had she accidentally slaughtered Emery in her rush to destroy the pack of wolves. She transformed back to her human form as quickly as possible, ignoring the painful sensation as her muscles, skeleton, and organs rearranged themselves. "Emery? Emery?!?"

She was still desperately searching for the child when she felt a sharp pain on her cheek, slamming her head to one side. She staggered back, raising a hand to touch her stinging flesh. "What was tha-" before she could even finish the sentence her opposite cheek was struck with enough force she almost fell over. This time she noticed that the world around her seemed to shimmer from the hit, the edges of her vision tinged with darkness. Vivianne fell back, falling to the ground and staring around in confusion. She had no idea what was happening, but there was clearly nothing she could do to stop it.

The third blow brought her out of the deep, enchanted slumber entirely. When she opened her eyes it was to see Emery crouched over her, his hand raised to land another slap on her. "No no no! Stop! I'm awake!" She sat up so quickly that their heads almost struck, She blinked as she stared around the hut, trying to banish the fuzziness that had enveloped her mind. She wasn't entirely sure what had happened until she saw one of the fairies peering in the door behind Emery, watching them with a sullen expression. "Oh... we're awake..." She clenched her eyes shut with one hand and rubbed her eyelids with one hand. She took a moment to gather her thoughts before she realized that her animals must be nearby. She shot to her feet, rushing outside of the hut and calling out incoherently. The reply was almost instantaneous: Hermes and Hephaestus rushed out of the woods, bounding to her side. She fell down, hugging both of her pets around the neck in pure relief.

At the sight of the peeking fae, Emery leapt up and chased after it. It got away again. He really wanted to kill at least one of those flying cockroaches. He watched Vivianne rush out of the tent and yell as well. He thought she was also seeking her own piece of vengeance, though she really needed to work on putting the rage in her voice. Emery worried the bug people had sent creatures after them when a great spotted cat and tusked boar burst from the undergrowth, but they seemed to be with Vivianne. At least, they clung at each other as though they'd been separated for years.

Since she was preoccupied, Emery sought out his staff again. Armed once more, he hoped the fairies would reappear so he could knock them out of the sky. None came, and the feast form earlier had rotted away to mush and mold, so there was no foraging from that. He looked back at Vivianne and her creatures and felt awkward. It wasn't as though he could join in or, he told himself, wanted to.

Putting the hood of his cloak back up, he chose to make his quiet exit, turning to the woods and hoping he'd find his way out at some point, preferably meeting a slow bug person on the way.

Vivi spent over a minute simply clutching her animals closing, breathing in their scent and reveling in their presence. She spent almost every waking moment with at least one member of her pack and the separation from them in the dream had been almost unbearable. If Hermes, Artemis, and Hephaestus had been there with her she was sure she would have coped better with the atrocious hallucinations. The girl finally released the animals from her fierce embrace, standing and looking around. There was no sign of the feast from earlier; the fallen tree had been stripped of any platters or decorations. Even more worrisome was the lack of any of the fairies who had caused this entire mess in the first place. Vivi wasn't sure what had inspired the forest sprites to lull them to sleep and haunt their dreams, but she knew that she never wanted to experience their anger or mischief again. She wasn't sure if she would have survived the experience without Emery at her side, helping her overcome the various obstacles and monsters they had faced.

The skinsharer suddenly realized that she was alone in the clearing, with no sign of the dark-skinned elf that had shared the nightmare with her. She stood up, turning to Hermes and clucking her tongue at the cheetah. He cocked his head to one side, meowing softly before bounding into the forest. Vivi quickly followed after her companion, her other animals following close behind. The woods were dangerous tonight and she didn't want to abandon Emery in unfamiliar territory. The least she could do was help guide him out of the woods. It wasn't long before she crossed paths with the elf once more, following the cheetah out of the underbrush and calling out to the man. "Hey, wait! It's n-not safe!"

I actually need to find and tame a Nightmare Beast, if you want to participate. If not Vivi can just take you to the outskirts of the woods.

Emery turned in confusion to the woman running toward him. "What do you mean?" he asked. "We chased away the bug people, didn't we?" He then spotted the cheetah and brought his quarterstaff up defensively. "Um, there's some sort of cat thing behind you..."

The cat didn't seem to be attacking either of them, however, and Vivianne seemed less than concerned about the cat standing in the snow near them, so Emery let himself relax again. "...Is he a friend of yours?" Emery asked.

Then the leaves rustled again. A ragged canine came out of the bushes, its face flattened as though it ran into a brick wall. It stalked toward them, sneezing some sort of glittering dust as it walked closer, growling and bearing its teeth.

"...Is that one of your friends, too?" Emery asked, bringing his staff back up. "Because, if it jumps, I'm braining it whether it is or not..."

Vivi smiled gently and gestured to Hermes, who immediately pounced to her side and purred deep in his throat. "Y-yes, this is Hermes." The cheetah yowled in acknowledgement of its name, eliciting a soft chuckle from the girl. However, her mirth faded when the feline turned its head to one side, the hair on the back of its neck rising as it growled a warning. The creature that emerged from the underbrush was truly hideous to behold. Its head looked like a wolf's snout had been brutally smashed against its skull, giving it a line of crooked, misshapen teeth and a overly flat nose. Its fur was dark black and matted with dirt and sweat. Its back legs appeared normal, but its forelimbs were unnaturally long and twisted as if they had a second joint, with nasty-looking claws. The skinsharer couldn't help but gasp at its appearance. "No... That's n-not one of m-mine..." The creature began to approach them, sneezing and shaking its head. Glittery dust flew from its mouth, looking oddly familiar...

With a start she realized that the same dust had been coating the ground of the hut they awoke in. Perhaps this was what the fairies had used to trap them in their own nightmares. She stepped forward cautiously, making an odd combination of clicks and growls that seemed incomprehensible. Although she lacked the vocal cords to actually howl like a wolf or roar like a bear, her close kinship with her pack had allowed her to develop a facsimile of a language that all animals understood. The twisted creature snarled at the greeting, shaking its head to one side and hissing dangerously. Vivi could tell from its bearing that the beast was confused and angry, a dangerous combination with even the most tame creatures. It would doubtlessly attack them with the slightest provocation.

"J-just back a-away..." The girl followed her own advice, taking two slow steps away from the creature. Although it did not retreat itself, the magnitude of its growl lessened slightly. She felt a wave of pity for the animal, so obviously in pain and uncomfortable. With that in mind she slowly pulled a small, hand-carved flute from her belt and raised it to her lips. As soon as the first notes filled the forest the tension seemed to drain from the animal's form, its snarl fading from its scrunched face. Vivi continued to play, a soft, airy tune that she had composed to help calm frenzied animals. Despite its gruesome transformation, the melody appeared to work on the nightmare beast. Within a few minutes it was lying down on the ground, swaying back and forth as it watched Vivi play.

Emery watched the maddened beast as it snarled and sneezed. He listened to the woman as she began to, well, talk to the creature, perhaps. She made clicks and grunts and other odd noises that the wolf monster responded to in a not overly positive way. It still growled and came toward them. so the beast talk from the woman didn't appease it.

Emery raised his staff slowly over his head, ready to bring it down on the creature's head when it came into range, when another sound came from the woman. He risked a glance to the side to see her playing a handcarved flute. An airy, breathy melody filled the air, managing to settle not only Emery's nerves but the wolf's own snarling mood. Confused, then content at the music, it settled down onto the snow, still sneezing and whining, but no longer looking ready to pounce on them.

"Um, if you have a dagger or something, I can probably slit it throat now if you keep playing," Emery offered as a tentative plan. He didn't want to get any closer to the maddened thing, but the last thing he wanted was for the woman to bring that flute from her lips.

Vivi's eyes shot open at the man's words and she frantically shook her head back and forth, although she did not lower the flute or stop playing the tranquilizing music. She skipped over to the beast and placed herself between the black-skinned elf and the creature just in case he didn't plan on following her instructions. Even with as twisted and deformed as the animal was, she couldn't stand to see it executed like a criminal. Without the influence of the mischievous forest sprites the wold would have probably led a normal life instead of being transformed into such a dangerous beast. She nodded to her pets behind Emery, jerking her head towards the nightmarish creature in a silent command.

Hermes and Heffy obeyed almost immediately, jumping over towards the black-furred creature and seating themselves on the deformed creature's limbs. The cheetah and dreadsnout using their bulk to hold the creature down against the grass. The nightmare beast did not react to their presence, still kept completely calm thanks to Vivi's pacifying melody Only when she was sure that the animal would not be able to free itself did she stop playing, tentatively lowering the flute. The twisted creature responded almost immediately, snarling and trying to free itself from her pack. The animals didn;t budge, keeping it firmly pressed against the ground.

Vivi turned to Emery, smiling slightly. "N-no. I'll t-take care of this. I can h-help this p-p-poor creature..." She turned back towards the beast, effectively dismissing the elf. If he thought killing this animal was the best choice she wasn't sure she wanted to help him anymore. "T-thank you for your help." She knelt down next to the nightmare beast, reaching forward and running her fingers along its squashed snout. It tried to snap at her hand, but she pulled back the digits before it could clamp down. "It's okay now... No one will hurt you..." She spoke in a calm, steady tone that was clearly meant to soothe the maddened animal's mind.

Emery watched as a large group of animals emerged from behind him and moved at the woman's command, ignoring him in favor of pinning down the wolf thing. For some reason, the woman didn't want to kill it. Well, if their shared nightmare said anything, it seemed she didn't care much for dead animals. Probably just ate berries and the morning dew...or something.

The wolf struggled after the music stopped, making Emery tense and raise his staff, but it seemed the zoo on top of it had it more than encumbered. The woman moved forward after assuring Emery she could care for the thing. Emery didn't know how, but she began to coo and sooth it with her words. Emery just watched. In truth, he never had much experience with animals, so seeing so many up close was rather interesting.

"Ah...what do you plan to do to it?" he asked, peering around her at the spotted cat thing and the big tusked pig atop the wolf. The memory of the nightmare emerged again, suggesting to him that, somehow, he probably owed this woman, and he hated owning anyone anything. Now seemed a good time to discharge that debt and move on with a clear mind.

"And...is there anything I can do to help?"

The skinsharer glanced over her shoulder, smiling reassuringly at the dark-skinned elf. Now that he wasn't trying to kill the animal she was more willing to deal with him. "I think h-he's been p-p-poisoned by those fairies and t-their sleep p-powder. Looking l-like this is his nightmare." She ran her hand along the creature's neck, feeling the animal shudder at the touch. There was a madness in its eyes that worried her, but she had dealt with rabid and frenzied animals before; surely the same tactics would work here. "W-Well... We n-n-need to get a l-lot of water in his s-system to help flush out t-the toxins. That m-might help. W-we just need to r-reassure him that we won't h-hurt him." She scratched behind the animal's ears, ignoring the growl deep in its throat or the way it bared its teeth like she was a threat. Vivi was tempted to try and share the beast's consciousness, but knew that it would be dangerous to delve into its mind when it was in such a crazed state.

Vivi pulled a small piece of cloth out of her belt, unfolding the fabric and shaking the substance within out on her hand. It was a small pellet of herbs and plants that she had developed herself for her pets. Not only did the treat taste delicious, it also made them stronger and healed light wounds. She waited for the dark-furred beast to snap at her again before shoving her hand forward, forcing the pellet down the creature's throat before it knew what was happening. Its snout snapped shut, but before its could spit the herbal concoction out she clamped her hands around its muzzle, keeping its teeth pressed together. The animal struggled and writhed, but it eventually swallowed the pellet. "T-there's a creek a l-little north of here, if y-y-you don't m-mind getting some w-water for me."

Emery watched, wide eyed, as the woman actually stuck her hand deep into the monster wolf's mouth, pulling it out again just before she lost an arm. Then she held its mouth shut with her bare hands. Despite the nervous stutter that plagued her words, this woman was fearless.

"O...okay..."Emery said to the request to fetch water. He stood up and trotted north. The creek itself, though a bit of a jog away, was easy to find. It ran deep, if not more than a yard or two wide, with broken branches crisscrossing it at a few points. Watching the water course, Emery took stock of his inventory: a hooded cloak, a robe, thin boots, and a staff. Not one of those things would hold water well. He could cup his hands, he supposed, but that wouldn't hold much and meant he'd have to get close enough to the monster to have it drink from his hands. He liked his hands. He wanted to keep them. He needed another plan.

He squatted down next to the creek, his feet growing cold in the snow. He could make a fire and melt snow, except everything was wet from the snow, and he still had nothing to hold water but his hands. He still liked his hands to use them like that. So...how to move the water from here to there?

He skimmed his staff through the water as he thought, wondering if he should head back and ask the woman if she had some means of transporting it, until he remembered a city from his childhood, a mountain city with running water, fed from a distant lake on a distant mountaintop...his mother explained how that worked when he'd asked, explaining how one could, indeed, make water flow uphill.

Emery pulled off his cloak, robe, and boots, shivering in the cold but unwilling to dirty them with his plan. He also summoned his Bug armorl, covering his body with a smooth, chitin shell. He waded into the creek, shivering as he knelt down, held up hands that shifted into mole-like spades. Taking a deep breath, he dived underwater and began to dig.

The forest soil was soft and wet, making the way easy except for the tree roots that wound through the entire forest subfloor. Guiding himself with the sky view of his Aerial Anchor, he dug through the roots, headbutting stubborn ones out of the way and digging through large ones to give the tunnel some support, keeping it low enough the water flowed in, but not so deep that the dirt above collapsed it. Finally, he saw the clearing with the woman, her pets, and the monster wolf. He emerged nearby, his chitin armor covered in mud. He dug around the tunnel exit, making a small, muddy pool that he eventually pulled himself out of. He dragged himself out, washing off the mud best he could in the water than rushed down the tunnel and leveled out with the creek, the pressure behind it pushing the water to the surface. He let the chitin armor melt away, revealing black skin covered in even darker tattoos, and he shivered in his wet underthings, dreading the walk back he'd have to do to fetch his things.

"D-didn't h-h-have ssssssomething t-t-t-to h-h-hold it-t-t," he chattered out, rubbing his arms with his hands for some semblance of warm. "S-s-s-s-sorry it's-s-s-s m-m-m-muddy...." He crouched down and curled tight, trying to conserve heat and dry off before he walked back to the creek. Through the snow. In the dark. Practically naked and soaked to the bone.

"Th-th-this s-s-s-seemed a b-b-b-etter p-p-plan in my h-h-h-head," he said, shivering.

The wolf-like creature had calmed down a fraction by the time that Emery emerged from the ground, lacking most of his clothes and drenched to the bone. Vivi took one look at the dark-skinned elf and quickly turned away, a blush rising to her cheeks. "That... T-t-that wasn't t-t-the b-best way to d-do t-t-that!" She turned to Heffy and made a few low, tonal noises to the dreadsnout. The boar replied with a severe oink, indicating that it was unwilling to leave the skinsharer alone with the maddened creature. She repeated the same command, lifting her flute up again and starting to play. The black-furred beast calmed down almost instantly, lying tranquil on the ground.

After guaranteeing that its master was truly safe the dreadsnout trundled over near Emery, snuffling at the elf. Eventually the boar turned his head away, aiming his snout towards a nearby bush. Fire gushed out of the pig's nostrils, igniting the plant in a flash and creating a bona fide campfire. Hephaestus was older and more experienced than he had been when Vivi first met him, so the fire-breathing pig was able to control the gout of flame and keep from lighting the trees surrounding them. With its task finished, the boar hurried back to the deformed creature and settled on its limbs once more so that it was safely contained.

The skinsharer lowered her flute, smiling without looking at Emery. "T-there. W-w-warm up." The girl stood up and walked over to the tunnel entrance, sniffing at the water that filled the small opening. She couldn't smell any filth or pollution in the liquid, so she scooped up some of the water in both hands and carefully carried it over to the nightmare beast. It was far less wild now, simply glaring at her instead of trying to maul her. Clearly, the pet treat had convinced the animal that she was not a threat. Vivi carefully offered the water in her hands to the creature, letting it lap up the muddy liquid. "There you go... drink up."

Emery had to agree. This probably wasn't the best way to bring water back. It seemed a good plan at the moment, but, well, squatting and shivering in the snow, his feet slipping painfully into numbness, rather proved otherwise. He watched with slight interest the woman's reaction and aversion. Seems it had been best he kept his underwear on. He'd considered slipping it off, as well, but didn't know if the woman was the sort who was ashamed and afraid to see another person naked. None of that made him warmer, but it was something to note.

The woman seemed to get into some sort of argument with the pig, over what he didn't know. She began playing, and the pig lifted itself off the monster wolf and trotted over to him, snuffling as it drew near. Emery was worried it was planning to lay beside him as means to warm him up, or just gore him with its tusks. It turned away from the elf to stare at a bush and snorted. This time, instead of moist, piggy breath, a gout of fire shot out, causing the bush to burst into flames and Emery to scramble back from the sudden explosion of heat.

"T-there. W-w-warm up," the woman said as the pig trotted back to flop onto the wolf again. She began watering the beast from the tunnel mouth. At least hiss plan worked, Emery thought as he dried off as quickly as he could. He stood and trotted back to the creek as fast as his stinging feet would take him, grabbing his boots and clothes from the bank before running back to the warmth of the immolating bush to redress. Redonning the dry clothes and feeling his body warmth stay trapped within them made in sigh aloud in relief as he settled near the bush.

"...Sorry I'm staying here," he said to the woman, who seemed to far prefer even the presence of the monster wolf to speaking with him. "Still cold, and not sure which way to go. I'll stay quiet." Really, he just wanted to watch the woman work, and observe her exotic menagerie a bit longer. He was far more used to lap cat and lean hunting dogs. A large spotted cat thing and a firebreathing pig were something quite new to him.

The skinsharer continued to feed handfuls of water to the nightmare beast as Emery jogged back to retrieve his clothes. The black-furred animal grew calmer and calmer as she ministered to its needs. After she had given it a healthy does of water Vivi sat down next to it, running her hand along its neck and scratching behind its ears. The wolf-like animal growled at the touch, but she did not pull back. She knew that treated the animal with compassion and not acting intimidated would be the easiest way to get it to trust her. "There, there... What's your name?" The deformed animal met her eyes, its expression still slightly crazed, but there was a trace of lucidity. The creature did not respond, but that did not stop the skinsharer. "I think you'd be a wonderful... Hades! I'm going to call you Hades."

Emery returned a few minutes later, wearing his clothes but still looking chilly. He immediately sat down next to the fire and started to apologize for not leaving. Vivi shook her head, standing up and walking towards the small blaze. She knelt down next to the fire, letting the heat sink into her skin. It was getting chilly at night, and from the look of the sky above there would be another snowstorm before morning. "It's okay Em-Emery. I-I wouldn't w-want anyone wandering t-through the w-w-woods alone tonight." Vivi raised her hands, cupping them above the flames to warm them. "W-Why were you in t-t-the w-woods anyway?" She hadn't gotten the chance to talk to the dark-skinned elf before they had been ensnared by the mischievous forest sprites.
