Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own.

In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins.

There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free.

Fysen shook his head wildly in an attempt to clear it, his shaggy hair flopping wildly. As he came around, he saw Rin with her sword hilt-deep in his father's eye socket. No. This wasn't his father. This was a dream, wasn't it? Dal'sdatti's body writhed in agony as the blade pierced his brain, his eye socket loosing fresh, warm blood in torrents. A loud scream escaped the dragon's throat as he flailed in agony, and he cried out to Fysen.

"My son, how could you betray me like this? For years you've searched, and you let it end like this?"

His body fell to the ground in what seemed like slow-motion to Fysen. Landing squarely on top of half-frozen mouthed-Rin, it ground shook in response to the massive being. Fysen stared in horror at his dead father, shaking his head in slow, small movements. That...person had killed his father. And probably mouthed-Rin, too. That 'Rin' was calculating. Murderous.

Evil.

Fysen quickly stood and ran over to his quarterstaff before facing Rin. His face showed anger and shock, and his voice quivered as he spoke.

"You.... You killed my father. You killed yourself, too, in all likelihood. You encroached upon his hoard and then took his life, and god knows what you did to your twin to make her so angry with you. You're a monster! A murderous fiend! Prepare to die, you scum!"

As he screamed the last line, he quickly took a battle stance, his quarterstaff shifting into a dastardly bardiche whose blade shone with a brilliant light. The length was easily 7 feet, and the head itself was about 2 feet. As he gave Rin another look of disbelief and angst, he started charging, knowing full well that he would likely lose, but unable to cope with his father's death.

The artificial construct slowly rose to her feet, her eyes bright and shining. Rin looked almost psychotic, her dress and skin covered in splashes of bright crimson blood from the vanquishe3d beast. She had managed to kill a dragon, a claim that she doubted many people in Imythess could make. This might be a dream, but she now knew of a tactic that could prove useful if she ran into one of the giant, intelligent reptiles in the waking world. Her mood improved even more when she saw that there was no sign of her doppelganger. The girl was not sure if Fysen had managed to defeat the clone or if had run off, but she was glad that it was gone. Fighting herself had been difficult, especially with her means of summoning a weapon stolen from her. She raised a hand to tenderly feel at her jaw, working the muscles. It seemed as if she still had a fully functional mandible, her lips had simply been melted together so she could not articulate her thoughts. Rin shrugged, turning to her companion. Hopefully the dream would end soon and she would be returned to normal.

Her eyes widened when the man said that she had killed his father. She glanced at the dragon, then back to Fysen, her incredulity apparent in her expression. It seemed physiologically impossible that such a massive creature had been the deaf man's parent, but the rage and sadness in his face made it clear that he believed it to be true. Rin mentally cursed for not preparing for such an eventuality. Despite the challenges they had face`d thus far, Fysen still believed them to be in the waking world, not a nightmare. Without a mouth, she had no way to explain the necessity of what she had done. The man charged forward at her, his staff transforming into a lethal-looking poleaxe as he attacked. Her eyes instantly changed from confused to focused, an icy intensity entering her expression as she spun out of the way of the man's charge. She kicked out as he passed her, making sure to hold back so that she wouldn't cause permanent damage to the man.

Rin raised the jade katana, staring at the honed edge with a resigned look. I don't think I have a choice... With a grimace she raised the blade, setting its tip against her cheek. With a short, brutal wrench she tore the sword across her own face with almost surgical precision. It sliced through the skin where she would naturally have a mouth. She ignored the resulting flash of pain and the blood gushing down her chin, instead opening her jaws as much as possible in a grisly yawn. "There. Much better." Her words were difficult to understand, thick and nasally, but she continued to talk anyway. "This is a dream, Fysen. We are the only real people here. Please don't make me hurt you." Rin held the katana in front of her as she spoke, but her posture was relaxed. Despite this, she still kept her gaze locked on the deaf man, waiting for his response. If he attacked her again she would be forced to incapacitate him and somehow restrain him until the dream faded.

Fysen shook his head violently. He refused to believe the words of this...this monstrosity. This killer. He lunged for her throat, the birdiche held high and in graceful form. Still dizzy from his fall, however, he missed, by a lot. He stumbled forward, not having even come within 5 feet of Rin, and quickly attempted to regain his balance. Putting a foot forward to stop his advance, he found nothing. No grass, no dirt. No ground. He had stumbled right off the edge of a cliff, and soon found himself falling, rapidly approaching the hard, jagged rocks and the water below. His stomach lurched upward into his throat as his head started reeling in confusion.

Fysen shot forward, sweat dripping from his brow. He was sitting on the ground in the camp that Rin had made, completely drenched in sweat that was starting to frost over into small beads of ice. Shivering, he looked around in confusion. Rin was a few feet from him, still fast asleep. As it dawned on him that it was all a dream, he began to feel somewhat silly. She had told him to be careful of his dreams, and he hadn't been.

Then, a wave of guilt washed over him; he had tried to attack Rin. Not just attack her, but he had wanted to kill her. And his father. Was that really how his father looked? How he acted? Fysen took in a large breath, and quickly exhaled. No, it couldn't be. Another shiver shook his body, and being reminded of his low temperature, Fysen looked around to see if the fire was still going, not remembering whether there even had been one.

Find no evidence of an active fire, Fysen quickly gathered a pair of sticks from the ground nearby, and started trying to make his own fire; unfortunately, he was failing miserably due to the moisture the twigs had absorbed from the snowfall. Sighing, he looked back to where Rin slept, secretly hoping she'd wake up, and more so that she wouldn't remember the dream.

The construct watched Fysen warily, unsure if the man had regained his senses yet. She had no idea what killing him in the dream would do, but she was hesitant to take the chance that it would somehow shatter his psyche. The woodland fairies had already proven quite adept at manipulating their subconscious minds; she did not want to play into their hands by fighting the deaf man. Fysen did not seem to be coping well with the dream. He stumbled away from her like he had forgotten who she was, holding the dangerous-looking poleaxe loosely. Suddenly the ground in front of the man began to crumble, falling away to reveal a seemingly endless void. Rin cried out in shock and rushed forward, but too late: her companion tumbled over the precipice, plummeting to what she was sure would be his demise. However, when she peered over the edge of the cliff Rin could see no trace of the man or his body. I hope he woke up... She didn't want to think about what might have happened to the deaf man if he hadn't. Perhaps he was trapped in a deeper layer of the dream, somewhere beyond her reach.

There was a soft chittering from behind her. Rin turned quickly, raising the katana to prepare for the next threat. Amongst the trees of the forest was a miniature army of familiar faces, all of the companions she had met in Imythess arranged in tidy rows. She chuckled softly at the brazen nature of the nightmare. "You tried this before, remember?" She pointed the tip of Kusanagi at the familiar face of Nkiruka, grinning widely. "None of you are real. I feel no guilt in cutting you down. You insult the memory of my friends." The gathered figures murmured at her declaration, turning and talking together in low, hushed voices that she could not pick out. Rin shook her head and began to advance, stretching her arms languidly. She bent down and scooped up the twisted, black blade that her doppelganger had summoned, swinging it through the air to get a feel for its weight. "Alright, don't say I didn't warn you..."

The girl opened her bright blue eyes tentatively, blinking away the clinging vestiges of slumber. A dark canopy stretched across her vision, blotting out any trace of the night sky. She yawned and sat up, glancing around with a muddled expression. Fysen was standing near her, attempting to coax a fire out of a pyramid of damp twigs. Rin suddenly remembered her deformity in the dream, her hands shooting to her face to make sure her mouth was present. Once she had guaranteed she had fully functioning lips she giggled, rolling out of her sleeping bag and bouncing to her feet. The construct seemed none the worse from the nightmares they had shared. After all, this was the third night she had been lulled into such a sleep by the forest sprites; she knew there was no reason to fear the apparitions that appeared to haunt them. "I'm glad you woke up, Fysen!" She made sure to look towards the man as she spoke, hoping that he could read her lips even in the darkness of the woods. "Hmm... I don't want to fall asleep again now. Do you want to help me find a fairy queen?" Her eyes sparkled as she asked the questions, and she slammed her fists together in a decidedly threatening manner. Rin was tired of having her dreams twisted and manipulated.

When Fysen noticed Rin waking up, he quickly looked to her. Would she hate him now that he tried to kill her? Was that even her in the dream? A million questions raced through his mind, all of which had answers capable of being given that would make him feel utterly miserable. As she approached, she spoke. While it was dark, he was just able to make out the words she formed, and quickly felt a rush of relief. It seemed as though she harboured no animosity toward him, and was even willing to continue working with him.

Fysen stood, giving up on the fire. He had put in quite a bit of effort, and was slowly realizing that the twigs were just too moist from the snow to accomplish anything productive. Flashing a brilliant smile at Rin, he spoke in his usual, squealing, hushed voice.

"I'm sorry about the dream. It was.... It seemed very real. I have a headache now. But yes, I'll be happy to help you find this queen. I'm actually quite versed in finding queens, so another would be fun!"

He stepped over the pyramid of twigs he had made, and started collecting up his belongings. He figured that Rin either wasn't in the dream, forgot about it, or didn't hold it against him. In any case, a huge weight seemed to be lifted from his shoulders, but because he still felt guilty about it, he apologized for his own sake. Having completely forgotten why he was even in the forest in the first place, Fysen quickly got ready to hunt a queen with this new acquaintance.

Rin shrugged at the man's apology. She could not really blame him for being disturbed by the nature of their dream. After all, the first time she had experienced the fairy-inspired nightmare she had almost lost her mind. The construct had managed to figure out the nature of the hallucinations before too much damage had been done to her psyche, but Fysen was a normal mortal, after all. He could not be expected to recuperate as quickly as her. "It's ok, Fysen. No harm was done." She didn't mention that it would be almost impossible for the man to actually harm her. From what she had seen of his combat prowess, it would probably take years of training for him to pose an actual threat to the construct. It made most individuals uncomfortable to know how strong and fast the girl truly was. Even more intimidating was her ruthless nature, but Fysen had already witnessed that aspect of her personality firsthand.

"Let's get started, then." She held one hand to her side, curling her fingers and focusing on her arsenal of weapons fathered from across different planes of reality, from heroes and villains alike. The sword she pictured in her mind was not one of her normal blades, but rather the weapon her doppelganger had wielded in the dream. "Morpheus's Shame!." The massive sword took form in her hand, its blade black and twisted with wicked, razor-sharp serrations. Wisps of black smoke wafted from its surface, surrounding the obsidian metal. Rin swung it through the air experimentally, barely registering how unwieldy it was. She stepped forward, swinging the sword towards a nearby tree. It barely slowed as it moved through the wood, almost effortlessly chopping through the trunk. The tree groaned as it toppled away from the construct, crushing through the underbrush and slamming into the ground with an almost deafening crash.

"This will do nicely." Rin's shrill giggle split the night, eerily loud in the aftermath of the toppling tree. She looked at Fysen, spinning the sword and planting its tip into the ground. Her grin was wide and feral, and there was no ignoring the fanatical light in her eyes. "Watch out for their blowguns. The darts are covered in a soporific." Without another word she turned towards the trees, pushing through the foliage and into the lush undergrowth. She moved with assurance as she dashed through the woods, the tip of the sword scraping against the ground as she ran towards the location of the nearest page. She already knew that the power of the Grand Grimoire was partially responsible for the actions of the mischievous fairies in Norwood. She would find them and stop them by any means necessary. She hear an unearthly, cruel chuckle from ahead and changed her course slightly to travel in that direction, her sharp blue eyes scouring the lush surroundings for any sign of one of the dangerous sprites.
