| Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit. Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own. In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins. There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free. Create a character now! If you're already a member, you can log into your account below: |

Boots crunched through the icy crust of the snowfall, carving their owner out a path through the trees of Norwood Forest. Winter came to the woods while Shan was in Balefire, and the difference between now and when he first laid eyes on this forest. The verdant green and lush foliage was gone now, and the usual earthy smells and cacophonous wildlife went with it. Now, the forest had a sharp, clean, cold scent. The trees were bare and grey in the winter sun, frosted with snow on each bough. As for the wildlife... Shan listened. He knew the sounds of the forest, having grown up in one. In winter, the forest was silent, all sounds muffled by the snow. He should only be hearing his own footsteps and his breath through his thick scarf. However, there were still songbirds calling back and forth to each other. He even saw a few playfully flying around the trees. Occasionally small rabbits would poke their heads up, watch him, and lop along. None attacked him, which he was grateful for. He didn't need that experience twice. A few deer even crossed his path. Shan had never experienced a winter in Norwood, so perhaps this forest's winter was unusually busy. And did he hear jingling? Shan stopped dead in his snowy tracks as a small group of flittering lights approached, wondering if now was to time to bring out his violin. The lights danced around him, and he realized the jingling was high-pitched laughter. A flash of light later, five tiny winged humanoids flew before his eyes. "Welcome, Welcome, Welcome!" they cried in unison, giggling and flying in the air, leaving behind trails of glittering dust. Something rustled past his ears. Startled, he realized another three were placing a garland of holly and red berries around his neck, a beautiful splash of color in this monochrome season. "Come! Come, friend! Come!" They cried with joy, dancing about him and urging him forward with calls and aerial dance. Shan didn't know much about fairies. His mother considered them pests. Mistress Tuttle was apparently friends with an odd group of fae who didn't steal from her as long as she supplied them with her special apple brew. He knew they liked music, though, so that might explain his reception. He followed the fairies to a clearing in the woods circled by trees, their boughs protecting the ground from excessive snowfall. Moss and stones were arranged around a large glassy pot streaming from the fires beneath. It smelled divine. Two fairies were needed to lift the ladle, and three to carry a bowl of the stew in a bowl made from the same paperthin but amazingly strong material. "Sit! Sit!" they called, urging him to a cleverly carved stone perfect for resting your feet on. "Eat! Enjoy!" Shan ate. It tasted better than it smelled. He didn't know what was in it, but he was certain he couldn't afford the recipe. Fairies never give anything away, his Arcane Knowledge pointed out. That was easily sorted, however. He could play them back now. "Thank you, Gentlefolk," Shan said, smiling and finding he couldn't place his bowl on the ground before two fairies carried it away. "I wish to repay you for the kindness you've shown a stranger. I'm a bard, and would be happy to perform for you until dusk." He made sure to set a time limit. The Fae were tricksters after all, and looked for loopholes. He expected the fae to be delighted. Instead, they looked slightly worried. "You need not do that, stranger!" one piped up. "For such a meal and a chance to rest with such wondrous company after a weary journey? It's my duty to repay you." There were whisperings back and forth, which confused Shan even more. "Ah, but you are weary!" the fae spoke in unison. "You should rest! You may play for us when you awake!" A group of them broke off from the main swarm, circling around him and laughing. "Come! Come! Come with us!" Shan stood again and followed, finding they had made a small shed of fallen limbs, leaves, moss, moulted feathers and shed fur, all arranged into a soft, warm bed protected from the wind and cold. Well, this seemed like a trap, but, really, what could the fae do to him? He'd already set his payment, and he didn't have anything more valuable on him for fae than his ability to make music. He should be safer here than he would be camping in the woods, with the fairies about. Besides, he could use a nap. Shan settled down, curling on his side as he drifted to sleep, never noticing the powder that tumbled on his face as he fell into dreaming. |

Winter had come, but the cold did not phase Diana as much as it did her new daughter, as well as that little girl she had kidnapped who she had now conscripted into being her daughter's playmate. Miru had grown much bigger since she was born, but at least her growth spurt seemed to stop with her still being a child. Considering the nature of her birth, Diana had no idea if she would begin to age normally now or if she would continue to age rapidly for a while longer, and it worried her. One day as the children slept huddled together under warm furs Diana took notice of what seemed to be a fairy. Diana had always heard many tales of fairies, good and bad, and one of those tales included them kidnapping children to keep as their own. Diana quickly moved to grab the little fairy and asked why she was there. Begrudgingly the fairy told her that she was trying to weave nightmares and to appease the 'tall one' for trying it on her daughter she would target someone else for her pleasure. Thinking on it, there was only one person she knew she wanted some manner of revenge on that didn't need to be deadly, and would also be easy to find. Shan would pay for not informing her about his actual relationship with enemy, even if she could not physically harm him. --- It had not been many days afterwards when the fairies found Shan and set their trap for him, inviting Diana to watch him squirm as he slept. Diana happily accepted the invite, leaving all her pets to keep Miru company. She watched and waited and finally came out of the shadows when he was asleep. "Worst nightmare he's ever had, right?" she said. "I think that'll be enough revenge on him from me. Can't touch the guy myself, of course. All debts are repayed, Fairies." "Not all," came a giggling voice behind her as Diana felt the slightest prick in her neck and felt almost immediately weak and tired. Before she could even get a word out she fell to the ground next to Shan, and did not even see the slightest shimmer of dust. "No more tall one's bossing us, no, no, no." |

Shan always had nightmares. It was based on a not-ancient-at-all covenant between himself and...He called it his Shadow, a long neglected part of himself, locked away because of his fears of what it meant about him. It was everything about himself he rejected, that he refused to define of himself as. With the covenant, a truce to a hard fought war between himself and his darker nature. Shan would listen to his Shadow side instead of neglecting it and letting it fester alone. He would hear what it had to say, never deny its existence - at least to himself - and even let it express itself on occasion. One of those times, as he moved to better understand it, was the realm of dreams. Thus, he wasn't shocked when the blackness of sleep shifted to himself carving, slicing, stabbing, and violating a thin young woman with dark hair and gold-flecked green eyes. It disturbed him to no end, and he wished he could scream himself away, but he never could. He could only observed and feel his dagger piercing skin and muscle, hearing the skinsharer he'd met in Calmonah forest scream in pain and fear until he finally silenced her with a slash across her throat. Still, something was wrong. Something felt off, and he didn't know what it was. He was well trained when it came to lucid dreaming, one of the side effects of having a witch for a mother, and this dream wasn't normal. He searched for another mind and found one. Shan shivered, wondering if this was the person who brought this dreamstate about, but, no. They felt like they were here the same way as Shan was. He wondered if he could ask them if they knew what was happening. Shan, however, wasn't in charge. His Shadow was, and he, Shan, smiled at the thought of a real victim for once, not just imaginings. Shan's body shifted with the logic of a dream, becoming a young redheaded boy, barely older than seven. The childlike form of Shan rushed over to the new mind, a bloody gash appearing in his side. Of course, it was only an imaginary wound, easily healed by the next scene. Shan smiled when he saw who it was. She was young, only a child, but her eyes and black hair were the same. He couldn't believe his fortune at having Diana here with him. This would be fun. "Help! Help!" he cried, his face shifting to a sobbing child clutching his wound. "You have to help me!" Diana loved a helpless victim, but the nightmare shifted without his intervention. Diana's own mind seemed to be affecting the dreamscape as well, though not in her favor. A giant figure, darkened by the bright red light shining behind it, rose from above the horizon. It's eyes were dead white, and its smile jagged and cruel. Though twisted by Diana's own mental imaging, Shan could recognize the face of Emily towering over them and laughing. "Hello, Diana, it spoke, the Dream Emily's breath hitting them like a gale, only hot and foul from the smell of rot. "Do You Want To Play?" |

Diana had easily slipped into the world of dreams that had remained a world of nightmares for months. It did not feel any different to her as her sense of reality became one with this place, the formless black not alien. She was small, a child in her dreams. She never knew why it was that she always seemed to become a child in her nightmares, but then again she usually tried to forget her nightmares anyways. It did not do to think on it after it was done, and this time would be no different. She was, thankfully, alone for a time in her short black dress, her tendrils swirling around her body as though she had always had them, even though in truth they were recent additions. Her silver eyes gazed around, and she could hear someone running to her. She skiddishly looked around, her face in fear until she saw a boy about her age and relief came to her face. She heard him crying out for help, and though it was her dream self she did not look concerned with his problems and for a moment a touch of the good ol' Sin Sadism crept into her tiny smile. But she was not the biggest bully in the playground, and a figure who truly seemed the one to fear crept up near her, and she swiftly ran to the boy and tried her best to hide behind him. She did not recognize him as anyone she knew, and merely used him as a shield between herself and Emily. The breath of her tormentor hit them and the smell was the first sign that something was off about this particular nightmare. "N-no th-thanks, Emily," she stammered softly, her voice barely a whisper. She felt very small and powerless in Emily's presence, and already knew Emily would not take no for an answer. |

"You Don't Want To Play?" the nightmare Emily asked, her face drooping in sadness. "But We Always Have So Much Fun When We Play." Shan could feel himself being terrorized by this demonic abomination of a child. No, no, he had to fight it. This wasn't him, this was the other Shan, the one who'd spend his life skipping through a field of flowers singing with bluebirds if he could. He was the one frightened of Emily's power. Shan simply wanted to tear her down and move on. This wasn't the real Emily though. It was only an imagining crafted from the mind, a projection of what Diana and, perhaps, himself thought of the zombie girl. Still, she could be useful, if he could only mold this to his own devices... And it was hard. If he needed any more proof that the one he was with was Diana, this was it. He could shape his own mind with a craftsman's ease, but to change another mind was nigh impossible. He had no idea how Diana's mind worked. He was like a woodcarver suddenly presented with marble. Perhaps he could find a crack, a way to convince the marble to shape itself and give him control. "I Even Gave You A Gift, Diana," the nightmare Emily said as Shan thought all this. "So You Could Always Think Of Me And Never Be Lonely." Inside Diana, a familiar weight appeared as a coin and dagger began to scrape and squirm inside her, like live fish flopping in her gut. They never cut, but their edges always suggested they could this minute or the next. Shan could feel it moving from how she was pressed up against him, using his young body to hide from Emily. Was she really that frightened of her? Suddenly, he found a slim fissure. He wasn't certain what it was, but he began to work on it, hopefully working thing to his advantage. "Do You Want To Play With Your New Friend More Than Me?" Nightmare Emily boomed, her face crestfallen like her puppy was ill or her best friend was moving away. "Is That Why You Don't Want To Play With Me, Diana?" |

Diana coward in fear before the colossal bully, the terror that dominated her very existence. She could tell Emily was upset at being denied. Then the gifts were brought up and Diana fell onto the mysterious boy in pain as her gifts seemed to just reappear as though she had never had them removed. She whimpered in agony, but she did not think it odd that this pain had just reappeared. As far as she knew they were always there, but was that right? For a moment her reality blurred, but the pain locked away such thoughts that this was anything outside of reality for her. "N-no!" denied Diana, and the moment the boy was a hindrance she backed quickly away from him, her arms wrapped over her stomach as she grimaced in pain from moving around so quickly. "I w-would much rather play with you, Emily! I don't even know him." Though her mind was limited to the thoughts of a child, knowing that she had someone else to blame things on she pointed at the boy. "He is just trying to keep me away from you!" Even locked in her child-like dream-self, it seemed Diana was very much out for herself and ready to manipulate the situation to her advantage. The child knew that things did not usually work out for her, and that eventually Emily would get the chance to play with her, but for a time she might hold back her monstrous friend and watch someone else be tormented. Would it work? |

"Really?" The nightmare Emily said, its dead glowing gaze shifting toward Shan. "He's A Very Mean Little Boy, Isn't He?" Shan stood bewildered at this turn of events. He'd been the master of his dreams for years. He should be able to shift this easily. This Emily, though probably flavored by his own image, was something from Diana's head. He kept twisting into the little crack of influence he'd found, bu nothing seemed to taking effect. Giant metal hands swept across the black plane, moving faster than their size suggested they should. They grabbed and lifted him up, the steel of the gauntlets so cold he could feel his flesh burn and adhere to them. He shivered, and not just from the chill, as Emily lifted him toward her face. It was just like back in the Catacombs of the Darklands, when he'd been shrunk to miniature size. This time, however, Emily looked less than charmed. "You're A Mean Boy," She said, her eyebrows narrowed in that little way they would just before she ripped someone apart. "Diana Is One Of My Bestest Friends, And You're Mean To Keep Her From Me." "E-Emily, Emily I-urk!" Shan tried to speak, except the undead giant decided to give him a sudden squeeze. He felt several ribs crackle as the chill of her gauntlets penetrated his body even deeper. He shook, eyes wide. He was...terrified, but he didn't get frightened! That was the twerp's job! The other Shan was the one who ran screaming from everything, not him! Except, well, it was the other Shan who somehow befriended this creature. The other Shan that had earned her help and compassion more times than he cared to think of. The other Shan even got her to bring him back from the dead! It was that Shan who befriended the same people he would have simply killed or toyed with. That Shan could relax and think when things seemed hopeless. The same Shan could look into the darkness and merely wonder what was there...Shan shivered. He did have fears. The dark and this lack of control were just a few of them. "E..Emily...It's...It's Shan..." he managed to wheeze as he realized another strange thing about this place. Always he felt a connection to the conscious parts of Shan's mind: his second thoughts, his common sense, his paranoia, the Gestalt himself. However, somehow, he could sense none of them in this, the world of dreams. He, the Shadow of Shan's mind, was utterly alone, which might frighten him the most. |

A chill ran up Diana's spine as she heard the little boy tell Emily who he was. Shan had never been in her dream world before, and his existence her now shook her from the usual sort of nightmare that would have played out. The girl stared at the back of Shan's head. And then she realized, as the logic of her world returned to her, that she had just attempted to make Emily mad at her other best friend. This would not end well for her. "Shan?" came the voice of the monstrous Emily, a moment of confusion as she studied the boys face. "You Got Younger, Shan." There was a moment when the logic of two nightmare worlds made one began to converge mentally in the image of the girlish undead. Her gaze went to Diana. "You Tried To Make Me Hurt Shan. Such A Naughty Friend, Diana." Diana once more coward under her gaze, feeling powerless from only the stare and afraid of the punishment to come. "I-I'm sorry, Emily!" she cried out. "I didn't know it was him!" Of course, Diana had every reason to be frightened, and her fears seemed to manifest as the spiders began to appear. They crawled from out of the ground, from under Emily's skin, and began to crawl over both Diana and Shan. "I Forgive You, Diana. Because Now We Can All Play Together." There was a girlish giggle and a grin, but her eyes were filled with such malice that went against the innocence she tried to convey. |

"Play?" Shan said. He would have loved to protest, yell angrily that she wasn't the real Emily, that he wasn't going to be a part of this, that this was all insane. However, he was still frightened at his solitude, his lack of power, and the fact this apparition could crush him. Considering the bizarre nature of this dream, what with equally sharing it with another mind, he didn't know what terminal crushing would lead to. Ideally, it would lead to his finally waking, but something told him to not chance it. "Yes, Play!" She said, a second hand appearing and lifting the child Diana up level to Shan and Nightmare Emily's eyes. "It's Sad You Two Don't Get Along, So We'll Play Together And Be Best Friends Forever, Just The Three Of Us. Doesn't That Sound Great?" Nightmare Emily smiled broadly, pleased with her plan. Shan thought it was asinine, but still remembered his position. "Y-yes, playing. That sounds...Fun. I'd loved to play with you and...Diana," Shan said, worried about what sort of play would be involved. His mind kept getting stuck on something Paranoia had fretted over long ago, in its little neurotic way. "Wh-what do you want to play, Emily?" Emily thought about this, her giant blank eyes turned upward. "I Know!" She boomed with glee. "Let's Play Tag! That Should Be Fun!" With surprising gentleness, she place the two of them back on the ground. The Nightmare Emily lost her giant proportions, shrinking down until she was her real-life size. The fear Shan felt didn't dissipate, though. "So You Two Don't Fight, I'll Be 'It'," She said with a smile. "Better Start Running. I'll Give You A Ten Second Head Start. Ready? I'm Counting! One, Two, Three..." Shan sprinted, the black plane shifted into a grassy field with a starless black sky overhead that still managed to illuminate everything. Here, at least, he had the advantage here, at least. He didn't have to run faster than Emily, after all. He just had to outrun Diana. He didn't want to risk what happened if you were "Tagged", and he had to be faster than a vampire who trapped victims with seduction, especially since he could at least enhance his own speed. |

Diana's face was awe-struck as she was lifted up and told they would play tag. Both herself and Shan were let down and Emily shrunk in size, though her form was still taller then Diana. Diana had the urge to run now, but she waited. She knew she had to wait for the count, knew that breaking the rules would result in punishment. She looked at the young Shan, and could see her seemed almost as nervous, though something was off about him. She could not quite put her finger on what it was, but she had other concerns. As soon as Emily began to count, Diana began to run, at first seemingly falling behind Shan, but it was quickly shown that she had a lot of speed to her, perhaps even inhuman levels, or at least at the peak of human conditioning. It would be odd to see a little girl go so fast through the grassy field. At first she wondered when they had gotten to this grassy field, but surely they had always been there. It was not like the world could just change on a whim, that would be silly. The moment she thought about the world changing, it seemed as though the terrain had changed slightly, jagged rocks appeared in the path ahead. Diana, being quite nimble, jumped with a flip over the rocks to avoid tripping over them, landing perfectly before continuing to run and hoping Shan would slip so he would be the one caught. As she continued, however, she could see the slightest gleam of spiderwebs, and stopped. The webs blocked her off from her intended path, like a wall to her world that barred her from escaping it. She immediately had to run off the path and hope to lose her 'friends'. "Ready Or Not!" she heard Emily call, squealing in terror at the thought of Emily following close behind, though still hoping she was closer to Shan. |

Shan skidded to a halt as the grass before him shift to jagged stones. Diana zipped past, flipping over the strip of treacherous land and hurrying past. Looking down, he realized and remembered his younger self never bothered with shoes when he played. His feet had been toughened by years of playing outside, but were they tough enough for this? Shan scowled. It was his dream. His feet could cross lava if he decided to do so. "Ready Or Not, Here I Come!" he heard behind him. He risked a look. Emily was approaching. She didn't move fast, but she walked steadily closer, holding across her shoulders what looked to be a halberd. Besides, sliced up feet were preferable to sliced limbs. He ran, his feet feeling scraped but not lacerated as he focused on making them as tough as ancient leather. He crossed the field, wondering what was stopping Diana. The answer came in the form of a wall of spiderwebs, blocking off a deep forest where things chittered disturbingly. Shan's eyebrows furrowed. Well, here's a possible solution to buying time. He shoved Diana as hard as could straight at the spiderwebs, which looked more than thick enough to hold a human child. He then skirted to the right and ran down the line of webbing, looking for a break while he continued wedging the crack in Diana's mind open. |

Diana had been taken by surprised by Shan's new, ruthless nature. She had not expected him to push her in the webs that instantly stuck tight to her. She squirmed and whimpered. "Someone, please, help!" she cried out, tears forming in her eyes as she could hear Emily moving closer, skipping over the rocks as though there was no hinderance in her path as she neared her prey. The girl squirmed hopelessly, the only thing keeping her from be overwhelmed by fear was her hatred for Shan, who she was able to get a glimpse at by turning her head. From her eyes came beams of the most unholy hatred, and should it hit it would burn at the back of his legs and hopefully make him fall over in the burning pain. If she was going down, she would do her best to take him down with her. A thought occurred to her that once more threatened to break the dreamy illusion of what she thought was real. She wondered why she had never tried to use her unholy beams on Emily before. She assumed she must be too afraid, but the thought continued that she had only acquired them recently. But when did she... It was something to do with Zenjirou. But Zenjirou was a big adult, how did a little girl like her fight with that? The fear and anger at her situation kept the thoughts to a minimum, but it seemed as though she was on the path of realizing this was a dream. |

"AAARGH!" Shan screamed as pain burned at his leg. He collapsed and grabbed his thigh. He worried that Emily had caught up to him and sliced his leg off. There was no blood, however, though there was a burn, deep and debilitating. He looked up at Diana, who's face was turned toward him and still slightly smouldering. She had light beam eyes? When did Diana get light beam eyes? Is that just for the dream or does she have those in real life? Emily drew closer, and Shan gave up. This was just getting ridiculous, and he still had the creeps from the utter quiet in his mind. He focused, shut his eyes, and opened them in real life, waking from the dream. That's what was supposed to happen. Instead, he opened his eyes to see Emily even closer, just a ways from Diana. She looked at Shan and Diana and gave a sigh. What was happening? He should be awake! He could still feel a connection to his physical body, if nothing else, and he should have woken up. Why was he still here?! "You Two," Emily said with another sigh. "Don't You Know How To Play Tag? I'm 'It' And I Tag You. You Don't Tag Each Other. I Suppose This Game May Have Been Too Hard For You Two, And I Never Did Explain The Rules." She raised the halberd, the blade glinting in the...whatever light they were seeing by. She lowered the blade, cutting through the spiderweb holding Diana in place. "Don't Worry. I'll Think Of An Even Better Game." Shan tried moving his leg. It seemed to have healed. He glowered anyway. He still didn't know what was going wrong, and now that uncertainty was moving him past fear and into anger. At least Emily didn't seem that dangerous. His most deadly opponent my be Diana herself, especially if she was going to continue doing things like shoot frickin' light beams from her eyes. "Oh, Diana," Emily said in a sing song tone. "You Have Some Web Still In Your Hair." She raised the halberd again, smiling innocently. "I'll Get That Off For You. Just Hold Still." |

There was the smallest hint of satisfaction, perhaps even a fragment of glee, in Diana's face when she heard Shan scream. The good times did not last however as Emily's voice followed soon after, telling of how they both were doing things wrong. "I'm sorry, Emily," she said quickly. She caught sight of Emily raising her blade then shut her eyes tight, afraid of the slicing pain to come and then finding it did not come. Freed from the web Diana moved away from the strands left, and found it curious how Emily had not taken advantage of Diana's weakness at that moment. Perhaps playing with Shan as well made her a little more forgiving then usual? It was as though she were in some aspect a different Emily, still frightening, powerful and playful, but not quite as cruel as usual. Or perhaps Emily had much better ways to play with her toys. Diana's thoughts were shaken entirely away from the less blatant evilness of Emily as soon as she was offered help to get the webbing out of her hair. "O-oh, th-that's okay, I can do it m-myself!" she stammered as quickly as she could, using a telekinetic spell to remove the webs before she had her hair, and possibly her head, roughly cut up by the 'helpful' Emily. She jut had to hope Emily didn't spot any more. |

Emily smiled and lowered the halberd. Shan was disappointed. He wanted to see how accurate the girl was with it. "Ah," Emily said with a self-satisfied grin. "I Know Something Easy And Fun." Shan blinked. He stood on a sandy beach, the sun either rising or setting over the calm sea, bathing the world in orange and pink. The beach was surrounded by a semicircle of white cliffs. Trees waved far above them at the cliffs' peaks. The gentle sound of surf on the beach mixed with the call of sea birds and the gentle wisps of salt laden breeze to make a soothing atmosphere. He blinked a few more times and turned to the left. Diana stood there, both of them still children. Emily stood between them, their elder at thirteen. She smiled at them. "We're Going To Play Jump Rope!" Shan looked down as he realized he was holding something. It was a long rope, but made of some sort of flattened metal, free of shine except for the edge. He couldn't think of a way to hold it without cutting his hand. The other end was held by Diana. "All You Have To Do Is Swing The Rope Together In A Circle, And I Jump Over The Rope While In The Middle. Go Ahead. Give It A Try." Shan, uncertain how to go about holding the "rope," managed to pinch the flat bits between his thumb and index, wincing as his palm brushed against the metal edge and form a bleeding nick. He swung with Diana, the rope slicing through the air and kicking up sand. Within the whirling blade, Emily jumped with ease and without any fear, even managing to spin and jump in and out. She began to chant and laugh. "Teacher, Teacher, Oh So Tired. How Many Times Did You Get Fired? One, Two, Three, Four..." She continued for quite a long time, on a beach where the sun never moved and the tide never rose. When she reached two hundred and fifty-six, she jumped out one final time, smiling. "That Teacher Got Fired A Lot," Emily said, not the least bit winded. Suddenly, she stood where Diana had been, holding the rope, and Diana stood in the place of the jumper.
