Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own.

In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins.

There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free.

Zaki chuckled at her friend's response to the scarves. It was this sort of pleasantry that Zaki received so infrequently. The veteran knelt and plucked her friend's scarf from the ground, tying it over her original scarf.

"No need to let pretty scarves go to waste, eh?" Zaki chirped. She let down her scarf a little and pointed to the golden markings across her cheek.

"They just wanted to know where I got them, and I didn't want to reveal my day job. I kinda want to settle down, open a restaurant." Zaki explained sheepishly. She knew her fighting blood would still be in her, but it was her hope she could cook for a living instead of kill and hurt. It left a hollow feeling in her, especially as she realized time and time again that others didn't feel the same way she did about combat. She waved a gloved hand at Inky and pulled her close. They walked for a time, shielding one another from the cold wind tearing through the Deep City.

They entered the largest square in the city, easily the size of the largest in Taras or Istan. Above them were dozens of paper lanterns, suspended by ropes held just below the cavern ceiling. As they flickered they revealed the high concentrations of quartz in the dark rock above. It was a little sky, a finite expanse that seemed infinite if one simply imagined for a moment. Before them, stretched between poles were hundreds of lanterns. Each was different, hundreds of designs from dozens of cultures. Some resembled the long ships of the clans of the fjords, others were delicate paper that threatened to rip at the lightest breeze. Many were simple redesigns of classics, more than one iron and glass lantern had gorgeous designs etched into it. Others were completely exotic, however. She saw an Istani design carved from one of the great green glass shards of the desert, a gorgeous and delicate thing that seemed to be held together by the most intricate matrix of translucent glass.

The two istani bobbed and weaved amongst the displays, examining them as they approached the parade passing through the city's trade road. Mine carts on their tracks lay partially hidden beneath great cloths. Above were displays and performances by businesses, guilds and private citizens. The Istani quarter's float passed by as they watched, a variety of cultural dances and flashing blades. Every ounce of it was a martial art, whether blatant or in hiding. Next came a float hired by the stonemason's guild, a comical performance of shouting dwarves arguing about one of their stereotypically bizarre engravings. Zaki laughed and held Nkiruka by the shoulder to prevent the woman from getting separated from her in the tumultuous crowd.

"Inky, isn't this nice? Oo! Look, the brewer's guild has their float coming up next!" Zaki said, pointing to the next float. A group of dwarven men and women twirled about in skimpy clothes. Their dance was incredibly inappropriate, getting laughs from the crowd.

Nkiruka couldn't stop staring at the cavern ceiling as they entered the city square. This section of the Deep Cities was so expansive that it practically formed a second sky above their heads, banishing any feelings of claustrophobia that the soldier might have had in the past. Zaki's movement brought her back to reality fairly quickly, before she would have given the impression of being dazzled by the bright decorations. She doggedly followed her friend through the crowds, the lantern contest, until they were positioned to watch the parade.

It was nice that they were among the relatively small amount of tall people in the crowd, giving them an excellent view of the parade. Nkiruka allowed herself a wide grin at the Istani float especially, since they showed off familiar martial arts that had been adapted to the form of dance. The float belonging to the Brewer's Guild made her blush, but she covered it with a smile once she realized Zaki was laughing. Following the floats were representatives of the Deep Cities Army that marched in formation, heralded by musicians. The General and other prominent officers in full ceremonial regalia led the column with dignity.

They grabbed a few more snacks after the parade, but by then most of the events of the night were done. Nkiruka and Zaki emerged into the cold air outside. The visiting Istani was softly laughing at a joke the other had made as she stepped out into the darkness. It had snowed a great deal in the hours they were underground; large, fluffy flakes still drifted down with no wind to guide them. The street lanterns cast their dull glow on the falling snow. Nkiruka consciously forced herself not to comment on the beauty of the scene, as she was sure Zaki had seen this sort of thing enough to take it for granted.

When Nkiruka spoke, her tone had lost the edge it usually had -- if any had still remained in the first place. "It's so quiet." No one had followed them on this road back to Zaki's house. Without birds or insects to make noise through the night, everything felt very still and calm. Nkiruka came to a sudden stop about midway through their walk. Able to see clearly in pitch-black darkness, the soldier was distracted by a massive overlook that showed the mountains of the north pushing out from low-hanging clouds. After a good ten seconds of staring without an explanation, her eyes flicked back to Zaki with an apologetic frown. "Sorry." She laughed nervously and continued walking. "I'm probably going mad." It was the closest thing to a joke she could honestly manage, but she conveyed the words in a tone of serious concern.

"I think I'm starting to understand why you live all the way out here, Zaki," she said after a long pause.

Zaki pressed through the snow, following behind Nkiruka. Lanterns swayed overhead, on the narrow lines the non-dwarven population had erected. The movement of the lanterns was accompanied by the jingle of their chains, a melody barely audible above the howl of the wind. They walked up the path to Zaki's house, ascending above the chained lanterns. Nkiruka stopped suddenly as they reached an overlook. The veteran walked up behind her, staying close as the woman observed the city. A thousand lights lay before them, a warm glow that made Zaki feel as though she was above a cloud of light. A single lamp on the overlook illuminated the golden lines on her face, and she smiled warmly at her companion.

Zaki listened to Nkiruka's wonderment. The veteran's looked out across the city. Her left hand drifted to Nkiruka's left hand. It was a moment that would only come once, she realized. It pressed Zaki's heart over the edge, her feelings welling up inside of her. Zaki's hand planted itself firmly on Inky's hip and she gently turned the woman around. Her eyes gradually closed, and she felt her head drift forwards. Her hand shifted from the woman's hip to her lower back, holding her in close as their lips touched. A few moments passed, soft skin pressing against soft skin. Even as the pleasant sensation warmed her mind and face, worry worsened the experience ever so slightly. Zaki had taken a massive risk. After a few moments or minutes she withdrew, a slight blush on her cheeks. She couldn't make eye contact, and clutched Nkiruka tight. Even though her face held a radiant smile, her features had an unmistakeable sadness to them. Zaki whispered into the ear of the one she loved, her chin against Nkiruka's cheek.

"I love you."

Funny how the snow seemed to blur the lantern light. Nkiruka's thoughts were similarly fuzzy; she wasn't used to dealing with so much sentimentality and it must have been taking a toll on her basic reasoning skills. Never in her life would she have just stopped to stare at something interesting in the distance while one of her closest allies -- someone she wanted to impress, not bore -- was around. Alone on patrol, sure, but not accompanied like this. Since her mind was sluggishly working on a plan to pull back and keep walking, it didn't process at first the fact that Zaki's mittened hand was running across her coat. That or the soldier was so used to her friend keeping close that the contact just didn't register in the first place.

About a second later their proximity finally refocused Nkiruka's fuzzy sense of reality. Something about the gentle way Zaki guided her body kept her from suddenly tensing up or flinching away. Instead she thoughtlessly let her whole body turn, offering no resistance. Half of her quietly wondered what was going on while the other simply took in the pleasant feelings of warmth and closeness. The back of her mind registered how their bodies' differences in height caused them to fit against each other rather conveniently. There wasn't any time to soak up any more information, nor to have any coherent thoughts. When Zaki lowered her head closer, Nkiruka instinctively lifted her chin. Instead of her heart racing, her pulse slowed down to a steady thump. She pushed herself up on her toes a bit. At the same time her arms, which had been dangling awkwardly at her sides for the past few seconds, lifted so that they could wrap around Zaki's shoulders.

The biggest emotion Nkiruka felt was, of all things, calmness. Her entire life up to that point was filled with violence, hatred and bitterness that kept her mind constantly roiling in a chaotic mess. The sudden absence of that was simultaneously jarring and pleasant. It didn't matter that the effect only lasted a minute or two, or that their contact didn't actually solve any of those problems. It was just nice for its own sake. When their lips parted and Nkiruka's thoughts came back to her, she realized that Zaki had always had a kind of order-making effect on her. The veteran, still keeping close, then whispered a sentence in her ear that Nkiruka could have never been prepared for. At first she didn't even believe what she'd heard.

This type of thing wasn't considered very unusual in Istan -- about as unusual as anyone loving anyone else, really. Their genders weren't the problem. It was Nkiruka's sheer lack of experience with any sort of romantic attachment that made the blood drain from her face and her throat close up. Her whole life had been so dedicated to combat in some form or another that she hadn't the faintest idea what to do in these sorts of situations. What she'd done during the kiss was just her instinct to equalize their difference in height, combined with a vague sense of how normal people kissed. Since the force of Zaki's words had effectively rendered Nkiruka mute, she chose to respond with action instead. She stepped in even closer, gently pressing her body even further into Zaki's nice warm coat. Her arms wrapped a little tighter over the veteran's shoulders. Maybe it wasn't enough to show that she returned the sentiment, but it would hopefully do for now.
