Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own.

In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins.

There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free.

Vyse looked up as the dragon lashed out at him, using it's long metal cased neck to strike at him. Vyse used his blades to hack off chunks of undead flesh as he barely dodged the gnashing teeth of the dragon, it would take hours of fighting if all he could do was hack off bits of flesh, he needed to get to it's chest or cut off it's head. Soon enough it seemed to notice Vyse's change in stance, the same stance that had baited him in before and killed him, instead he drew his head up and walked forward, slashing at Vyse with his claws and breathing small bursts of flames down at him, he would fight safe this time, the man had ripped him from jaw to neck last time, this time he would give him a chance.

Vyse growled as he sheathed Lita and Fenrir, the two blades would be useless against the undead beast, His extra arms took out the maces on his back, one set on fire while the other let off no glow, he dodged around the claws and fire as he threw the mace up at it's head, the spinning mace missing only by inches as the dragon dodged it by swaying it's head. Vyse kept up the pattern for a while before feeling the burn of flames on his back, he hadn't stepped forward far enough, the flesh on his back was probably burned, that meant his favorite vest and jacket were ruined. He heaved the mace up and threw it directly into the base of the dragon's neck, metal studs creaked as the mace made contact, bolts shattered, metal cracked, it had been more then effective. The dragon's head lowered, trying to take the stress off of the metal studs. Vyse smirked, looking up at the ceiling, he had to kill the dragon now or else he would lose just because of his lack of stamina from the bloodwrath.

Vyse noticed a rather larger stalagmite on the ceiling, it was a bit farther back, the dragon needed to move a bit before he could even think of using it. The dragon let out a stream of fire, Vyse barely dodged to the side, only taking the flames on his left set of arms, he roared in pain as he rushed the dragon, ramming it with his shoulder, knocking the dragon back a few paces, Vyse watched as it raised it's head to look down at him, he crouched as he dropped his weapons and sprang straight up, his draconic might giving him a powerful leaping attack. He brought his arms around the dragon's neck at the base of the dragon's skull, his jump's momentum sending him and the dragon's skull straight up into the stalagmite. The dragon roared and started to convulse, it was dying, Vyse roared again as he squeezed the dragon's neck, twisting with his entire body, the neck slowly ripping as the weakened metal gave, turning the neck into a shredded mess of flesh, coming apart at the metal studs. Vyse breathed heavily as he slowly climb down the dragon's neck, dropping the last few feet, he reached for his weapons, looking over to Rin to see how she was doing.

Rin tried to ignore the roars of the dragon as she charged at the remaining golems, one blade held to each side. The undead-looking creature advanced to meet her charge. It was obviously slow, but easily eight feet tall with bulging muscles. The girl sliced upwards with Kusanagi the moment she was within range, the tip of the katana cutting into the creature's sickly flesh. A tar-like substance leaked from the wound in place of blood, but it did not even respond to the blow, simply dropping one fist towards her skull with deadly strength. Rin managed to raise the star-blessed longsword in time to intercept the blow, but the golem punched the edge of the sword as if it were immune to pain. The sheer force of the blow knocked the girl to the ground, her entire arm aching from the creature's brute strength. To make matters worse, when it raised its hand the Lan de Yue Jia remained stuck in its flesh, tearing the blade out of the girl's hands. She snarled in frustration, somersaulting back from the monstrosity and taking a defensive position. The golem tore the blade from its hand and threw it to one side before advancing once more, tendrils of electricity sparkling in its eyes and along the bolt in its neck.

The girl shot forward to meet it, dodging around its lumbering swipes to slash and jab at its body. Each blow carved off chunks of decaying flesh, but the creature continued to fight despite the injuries it was accumulating. Furthermore, she was worried about the actions of the last golem. Instead of attack her it was writing with its fingers in mid-air, arcane runes that were clearly the precursor to some arcane spell. She could not fight both of these creatures at once, especially if one of them could freely use magic. Rin snarled as she jumped up, the blade of the katana flashing as she slammed it underneath the golem's chin. It pierced all of the way through the beast's skull, protruding from the top of its head in a spray of the thick, black liquid. For a moment she feared that even such a grievous blow would not stop the construct, but its knees folded so that it fell backwards, wrenching Kusanagi out of her hands.

The girl turned to the last creation just as it finished the arcane glyph, a bolt of lightning surging towards her. She cartwheeled out of the way, skidding to a halt. Instead of striking her the powerful bolt of electricity stuck the felled reanimated golem, lightning crackling over its decayed flesh. Rin grinned victoriously and held one hand out, focusing on summoning her next weapon. "Gae Bulg!" The air blurred and she was suddenly holding a six foot-long spear. It was an odd coppery color and entirely devoid of decorations. The spearhead was spade-shaped, with seven wicked and sharp barbs lining each edge of the weapon. She was unsure if the wounding barbs would be useful against a metal construct, but if nothing else she could beat it into submission with the shaft of the polearm.

A scrape of flesh on stone was the only warning she received of danger from behind. Rin threw herself forward at the same time she felt a thick hand slam into her back, knocking the breath out of her lungs and tuning her acrobatic flip into a careening tumble. Rin cried out as she rolled across the hard floor with bruising force, finally coming to a halt. She sprang to her feet almost immediately, glaring at the reanimated golem. It had removed the katana from its flesh, the ichor-coated blade laying on the ground behind it. Lines of bright electricity curled around its body, congregating on the areas she had injured earlier. She growled with annoyance as the flesh regrew before her very eyes, completely mending the construct. Clearly it had some sort of regenerative power that was sparked by lightning. Rin's eyes shifted away from the hulking creature to the metal golem, which had already begun casting a new spell. I have to take care of that one first, apparently.

The girl charged straight at the undead creature, the spear gripped in both hands. She ducked underneath its heavy blows, stabbing the barbed spearhead deep into its torso. With a grunt of exertion she yanked the spear free of its body, tearing its chest cavity open and spraying the surrounding area with its tar-like blood. Before it could strike again she sprinted past the golem, heading straight for its magically-inclined brethren.

She closed the distance between them quickly, but not quite fast enough to avoid its next spell. This time it was not electricity that lanced out at her, but a small bolt of pure black energy. Rin tried to throw herself underneath the spell, but to no avail. It slammed into her left shoulder, boring through the flesh and muscle to shoot out of her back. She did not slow at all despite the flash of pain, whipping the spear through the air so the shaft slammed into the arcane golem's legs. It toppled easily, metal clanking as it slammed into the ground. The girl stepped on its torso with one foot, holding it to the ground as it writhed. Rin spun the spear and slammed its point into the large gem on its chest, breaking the jewel with a staccato crack! The creature's struggles ceased instantly, the light leaving its eyes as the magic that powered its body lost its connection to the golem's frame.

Only after incapacitating the being did she assess her own injuries. There was a coin-sized hole all of the way through her left shoulder, blood from the wound flowing freely down her front and staining her white dress. The girl ground her teeth together in a combination of pain and annoyance. Her left arm was worthless now, and that was not a good way to face the undead monstrosity. She turned to glare at the golem that was ponderously plodding towards her. She wrenched the spear out of the arcane construct's chest and spun it in her right hand, preparing to tear her last opponent to pieces if necessary.

Vyse watched as he staggered towards Rin, she dealt with her foes well, far to well for a girl her size, then again, she was far from ordinary. He watched as she prepared to take down the final foe, he grimaced as he went into a job, using his draconic might empowered legs to long jumped, using his side and shoulder to ram giant undead creature, pinning him between himself and the wall, he could feel something snap from his draconic charge, he probably cracked a rib or fractured a bone in his arm. He took his blades and hacked apart the crushed golem, his arms felt heavy, his side was in pain, and one of his right arms was hanging limp at his side. He let his arm drop the blade, he put away his mace and picked up his blade, he was now ready to keep on fighting.

He looked towards the drow, then to Rin, and then to the carnage they had caused, if they ever learned how to fight like a team they would be one heck of a combination. Vyse took a few steps towards Dalamar, only for him to start chanting, holding up the page they were after, the walls started to shake, he was making an earthquake. Pieces of obsidian began to fall from the ceiling, he growled as he rushed towards Dalamar, sheathing his weapons just before getting to him. He grabbed the man and threw him, his body slamming into the entrance that had been covered, the body crumpling to the ground, the ceiling still was falling. Vyse grimaced as he turned, taking out his throwing mace, he threw it as a large piece of obsidian fell towards Rin, shattering it. He felt something crack the side of his head, the dragon's body going berserk, bringing down the room even faster, he yelled at Rin, "Get out of here!" He put his hand on her back, shoving her forward, she was far to limber to fall from that, she could easily go into a roll like she had in their last fight, it would send her to Dalamar and the exit, while Vyse himself was far to weak to run that distance. He fell to one knee, succumbing to his weakened state.

Mere moments before she could engage the undead golem once more Vyse came out of nowhere, slamming into the creation bodily. She winced at the sound of impact, hearing several cracks that sounded like snapping bone. Still, the berserker did not seem to notice any pain, singlemindedly hacking at the construct until it had been cut into too many piece to count. The girl wasted no more time on this foe, turning to glare at the drow. He still did not look worried, simply sneering and holding up his page of the Grimoire. The girl cried out in shock as she felt its power surge through the room, the fell purposes the dark elf had used the parchment for imbuing its aura with a power so foul it caused physical pain to the girl. She found herself almost crippled, sharp pains shooting up her limbs and her breaths becoming laborious. Luckily, Vyse was not attuned with the Grand Grimoire and therefore missed the brunt of the magical attack. He charged forward, grabbing the drow with one arm and tossing him as if he was a light as a feather. However, the damage had been done; the entirety of the cave were shaking and writhing, cracks spreading across the walls. The dark elf tumbled across the floor of the cavern, a bloody streak marking his passage before he finally rolled to a halt. Vyse turned to her, grabbing her arm and throwing her forward while shouting some nonsense about how she should escape. One look into his eyes and the girl knew he meant to retreat without him.

"Like hell!" Rin turned the push into an acrobatic roll, barely wincing as her injured shoulder slammed into the ground. She came out of the maneuver near where she had left Laevateinn, the eight foot long weapon still protruding from the floor. The construct grabbed the hilt and pulled it back so the blade was tilted, its inclinded edge pointing straight towards Dalamar and the collapsed exit of the cavern. Her eyes were completely merciless as she mumbled the incantation underneath her breath, the runes along the flat of the sword glowing red-hot. "World of men, crumble and break, for Surtr's footsteps make the very earth quake!" The drow looked up just in time for the flesh to melt off of his skull and his eyeballs to pop, fire bursting from the earth to obliterate the very wall of the cavern.

When the fire had faded, there was a gaping hole where the wall of the cavern used to be, a path into the large tunnel that led all the way to the upper chambers of the palace. Rin snapped her fingers and all of the weapons she had summoned disappeared, vanishing until she needed them again. With her good arm she roughly grabbed Vyse's arm, hefting his body in a fireman's carry. She began to run out through the melted hole in the wall and began to charge up the tunnel, gritting her teeth with every step. The floor continued to shake underneath her feet, making each step a struggle. Chucks of obsidian fell from the ceilings and walls as they fled, shattering as them slammed into the ground. Although they passed several drow guardsmen, none of the dark elves tried to stop them, too preoccupied with escaping the collapsing tunnels themselves.

Vyse grimaced as Rin blew open the exit, snatched the page and of all the stupid things, came back for him. He let her carry him, he sighed, the ground was shaking, there was little doubt in his mind that the immediate area would collapse, he heard someone whistling, voices calling out to them. He smirked as the voices became clearer, "Boss, and boss' friend! Come on, hurry hurry! Qadaj has an entire band of mercenaries outside of the tunnels, waiting for us, we were lucky, when the drow came back with reinforcements Qadaj was there with a small army of ticked off mercenaries that work for you, it was a massacre boss!" Vyse's two subordinates he had brought with him had come back, the two nodded to Rin and took Vyse from her, the shorter one with a thick mustache smiled at her, "Thanks for saving our boss, but we can talk later, for now, we run!"

One of them put Vyse on his back and offered Rin the same treatment with the other one, once she jumped on or would keep on running herself was decided they set off, leading them through the tunnels back up, the tunnel collapsing behind them. Nearly ten minutes of sprinting later they came to the opening where a short istani man wielding a large scimitar stood, the ground was no longer shaking, but the place they had infiltrated had fallen to pieces. The short istani panicked when he saw Vyse in that condition, telling them to put him down so they the healer they brought along with them could do his work.

The istani man bowed to Rin, "Thank you for saving my friend, I am Qadaj, Vyse's adviser for his merchant company. I am glad you got him out of there, his condition is severe, extensive internal bleeding, blood in the lungs, his heart constricting itself, slowing blood flow... his cursed bloodwrath is showing us what it does to the warriors of his line... it is a sad day, no matter how many times I tell him to wait and be rescued he instead uses his monstrous strength to break through everything. Again, I thank you,we have everything under control here, if you would like we could tend to your wounds to, just stand near Vyse, the healer should be casting his spells on him soon." He bowed again and walked back to Vyse, inspecting his friend as the healer began weaving his magic.

The construct sighed when she spotted several figures ahead of them in the tunnel, expecting to have to cut a path through a battalion of drow in order to find their way out of the palace. However, as the men approached their appearance and words identified them as some of Vyse's men instead of enemies, looking for their boss. She grunted at the end of the quick exchange, calling out to one of the mercenaries. "Please, help me carry him!" The man looked at the berserker's injuries with a frown and immediately lifted him up all on his own, carrying him so that Rin was unencumbered. Another one of the men offered to carry the girl as well, but she shook her head resolutely. With her hand free she pressed it against the hole in her shoulder, stemming the blood. Already the flow had subsided, suggesting that at least she wouldn't bleed to death. They passed the remains of several drow guards in the ascent, testimony to the skill and ferocity of the mercenary army that had been brought with this man, 'Qadaj.' She had heard Vyse mention the name before, but the girl had never actually met his lieutenant. Hopefully he would be able to hold their emergence point until they reached the exit.

After ten long minutes of running at full speed they finally reached the upper caverns. Although the earth was no longer shaking, she could still hear the crashes of collapsing obsidian behind them and knew that Dalamar's experiment chamber had been buried in the earthquake. Rin could not help but feel a surge of satisfaction at the thought. What that drow had been doing with the power of the Grimoire's page was an atrocity, and perhaps the earthquake would keep anyone else from discovering his fell work and attempting to replicate it. Near the ext of the tunnel was a dark-skinned man with an obscenely large scimitar. As soon as he saw Vyse's injured condition the man yelled out for help, a healer quickly pushing their way through the ranks and kneeling over the berserker's battered body.

Rin nodded thankfully to the man when he introduced himself as Qadaj. She had seen Vyse's monstrous strength for herself on multiple occasions, but the girl had been unaware that entering the bloodwrath state was so damaging for the man's insides. She joined the Istani man as they stood watching the healer work on Vyse. The girl knew that in truth, she was much like the berserker in many ways. When she fought she entered a trance-like state where the only thing that mattered was her success. Although she seemed to have more control than Vyse did, there was very little difference in their actual styles. Suddenly a wave of exhaustion crashed over the girl, accompanied by a sharp jab of pain from the wound in her shoulder. She staggered, falling against Qadaj and groaning softly. "I... don't suppose you have a second healer?" Rin smiled weakly before passing out, falling down to the ground in a heap.

Qadaj smiled at the girl as he brought her to where Vyse was being treated, calling for second healer. A man in all white came running from a small group of mercenaries, bowing to Qadaj, he looked at the girl and saw the horrible wounds and frowned, his hands glowing white as he whispered his spell, "Vigoratus atrox vulnus in is parvulus." The magic flashed into life, healing up the minor wounds and stitching up the major wounds, Rin looked as if the wounds had just healed, leaving behind only the pinkish flesh of a healed wound. Though Vyse wasn't nearly as lucky, Qadaj helped the other healer, flipping Vyse onto his stomach and holding his mouth open, letting a trail of blood leak out as the healing magic started to heal his insides.

It was nearly five minutes before Vyse came to, sitting up and groaning, he was alive, he was in pain, but he was alive. He looked to Rin, her wounds gone, he saw Qadaj yelling for people to set up a bed for me in the back, Vyse shook his head as he stood up, he coughed a few times, he felt no liquid come out, his lungs had been purged of blood, good, he turned back to Rin, "Thank you for saving my life, would you like a ride up to the surface, there is more then enough room in the caravan for one more." The caravan came around, being pulled by none other then a very grumpy Umbriel, she grumbled and swatted the back of Vyse's head, causing him to chuckled as the dire tigress nuzzled his back, she hadn't lost her final cub this day.

Rin awoke to find a stranger kneeling over her, his outstretched hands hovering inches above her torso. The girl's muscles tensed, preparing to blindly attack the unknown man before the events of the past hour seeped in, reminding her that this was probably a healer. His hands glowed with a golden light that flowed over her body, seeking out the various injuries she had accrued during the invasion of the tunnels and mending the flesh. The construct sighed with relief as the smaller cuts and bruises faded entirely, while the hole through her shoulder slowly knitted itself together. Within minutes the girl looked as good as new, the only reminder of the battles she had fought a small scar on one shoulder and the bloodstains on her sundress. Rin looked down at the marred garment with obvious disappointment. She seemed to go through dresses at an abnormally fast pace, but that was one of the dangers of being the Guardian of the Grand Grimoire. She would have to either buy or "acquire" a new dress at the next town she wandered across in her travels.

Vyse seemed to have recovered as well, although the berserker-turned-merchant was still pale and obviously in pain. The girl looked at him worriedly, but it seemed as if the pain was not due to any injury but simply a side-effect of his bloodwrath state. When she was offered a ride with the caravan the girl nodded. When the beast pulling the wagon came into sight she cried out excitedly. "Hello Umbriel!" The girl waited until the dire tigress had finished nuzzling her 'cub' before running her hands through its thick hair, breathing in the animal's musky scent. Rin had always been fond of the big cat; in fact, for a long time she had preferred Umbriel's presence to her master's. The construct tenderly helped Vyse to get seated on the bed in the caravan, making sure to move slowly to avoid jostling the man and causing him any further pain.

Only after the group of merchants and mercenaries started to retreat from the subterranean palace did Rin look around their surroundings. The small army that Qadaj had brought into the caverns had managed to defeat many of the drow that were out in the open, but she had no doubt that more of the dark elves were secreted away in the chambers of the massive structure and the labyrinth-like tunnels beneath it. "What do you think is happening here?" The girl brushed her right forearm, feeling the page hidden within pulsing in response to her touch. Although the enchanted parchment could not share how its power had been manipulated by Dalamar, the construct had no doubt he had used it for some manner of atrocious experiment. "Who would create so much... misery, and pain? And why is no one stopping them?"

Umbriel purred as Rin hugged her to the best of her ability, nuzzling Rin's side until she let go. Vyse himself still felt terrible, the caves were spinning a little bit and he could feel himself wobbling, it was a relief when Rin helped him into the cart, helping him sit down slowly, Vyse gave a sigh of relief, he hadn't died this day. Vyse raised an eyebrow as she asked what they were doing and why they did it, she was either far to naive or had no deductive reasoning. Vyse frowned as he spoke, "Some people do it for pleasure, others do it to see if they can, while countless others do so for money and power. Whenever me or the group I'm part of gets wind of these kinds of things we react as fast as possible, I was only supposed to be here for a simple trade, drow have some wonderful healing elements in their plants that bloom deep in the earth, but you saw what was happening Rin. They were creating golems, abominations, even raising a dead dragon that had a vendetta against me the last time I ripped it's head and neck in half. Though if you want to help stop these things, look for a man named Ozan Mazhar, he can get you into the Silver Hounds, you never know, you might be able to use the connections to find page locations."

Vyse leaned back slowly, he could feel the cart lurch forward as Qadaj and the mercenaries kept up a rear guard. Vyse grinned slightly, he had indeed gotten a loyal group, maybe he should take to the seas for a while... well once he gained enough advisers to help run the company, right now himself, Qadaj, and Ratt could barely hold the place together, they needed trustworthy men... and fast. Vyse felt a slight pang in his chest, blasted heart wanted to throw another fit, he grimaced, "It's sad isn't it, I was once so proud, so strong, I used to think I was nearly unbeatable... but now I am laid low by even the smallest of cuts or just by killing to much, the bloodwrath makes it nearly impossible for me to do what I need to do, if I wouldn't have this curse... my heart wouldn't be in this condition." Vyse looked to Rin, his eyes were weary, he needed rest, he could already feel himself nodding off, he would say one final thing before he would fall asleep, "If you have anything to say Rin, say it now... I'm sorry but I'm going to need to sleep, it helps my heart recover." And more then that it helps heal his fragile mind, he listened to Rin before closing his eyes, drifting off into a dream filled sleep, dreams of his friends near and far.

Rin gnawed on her lower lip, nodding slowly as she absorbed the information. Vyse was one of the few mortals in Imythess that she had been completely honest with about the nature of the Grimoire’s pages, and she would welcome any advice he could give her. ”Ozan Mazhar, eh…? I will look for him as soon as possible… Although I doubt I would fit in the Silver Hounds.” She had heard a little about the policing agency during her travels. One of her former traveling companions, an Istani warrior-monk by the name of Zaki Kestrel, had apparently been a high-ranked member of the organization. Although she did not understand much about their goals, if that group could assist her in recovering the pages of the Grand Grimoire she would have to investigate further.

The girl looked at Vyse worriedly when he admitted he was in poor health. She could still vividly remember the first time she met the berserker. Although he was not noticeably weaker than before, she could understand how the extreme state he entered was damaging to himself. The construct had, from time to time, accumulated injuries herself when entering a trance-like state in which to do battle. Still, due to her role as the Guardian of the Grand Grimoire the girl’s body was much stronger than a typical mortal’s. Rin did not know exactly how Vyse felt to have his insides betray him, but she could still feel sympathy for his plight.

”No, Vyse… Go to sleep. You’ll feel better when we reach the surface.” She smiled tentatively at the merchant, hoping that the darkness of the tunnels would hide her hesitation. Rin was legitimately worried about the man’s health, but she knew that worrying would only offend his conviction. The construct had not forced Vyse to assist her; the man had helped her of his own volition, for his own reasons. She waited until the rocking motion of the cart had lulled the man to sleep before letting the smile fade from her expression, folding her knees against her chest and wrapping her arms around them.

Do… Do you think I’ll end up like him one day?

Of course not, Rinrae. You are constructed much more soundly than such beings.

… That’s not what I meant.
The Grimoire did not respond to that statement, and the girl accepted its silence. She watched Vyse as he slept, her face clouded, waiting for the company of mercenaries to escort them to the surface. Rin knew that she would have to be on her way again soon, but it would be nice to relax for a while first...
