Seele dispassionately watched his summon be destroyed by the seraph-infused swordsman. The fiery wings made short work of the creature, as he had expected. Still, it had given him enough time to finish his summoning glyph once more. The sorcerer surveyed his work for a moment, proofing its patterns and runes before completing the spell. When he was sure everything was in its proper position and orientation he thrust the wand through the heart of the sigil, sending a burst of raw power through the symbols in order to complete the summon. He felt the illusion spell slip away as if it was a cloak falling off of his shoulders. The air rippled around his levitating form, revealing his presence as the runes sparkled before fading out of existence. Hellhounds, answer my call!" The roofs of the buildings on either side of the alleyway shimmered for an instant. A circle appeared on each surface, which soon transformed into a gaping hole brimmed in fire. The stench of sulfur spread through the air as two creatures straight from the Abyss crawled onto the mortal plane, the air sizzling as it came into contact with their flesh. The hellhounds were the size of a large attack dog, with vicious claws and teeth and a keen, violent intelligence. However, their most dangerous attribute was the nature of their bodies. Intense flames course over their limbs and torso, an abdominal blaze that only the most potent magics could quell. Their teeth were seemingly carved from obsidian, rows of sharp points that gnashed together harshly. The translucent droll dribbling from their jaw sizzled when it struck the rooftop, and every step they took left a flaming footprint on the shingles. "Kill him." Seele looked directly at the celestial infused as he spoke, a cruel edge in his voice. The hellhounds immediately obeyed; one of them ran to the edge of the roof and threw itself off of the building, plummeting towards Aiden with its paws outstretched and jaw open to snap at the swordsman. The second hellhound prowled the edge of the rooftop, barking ferociously and waiting for its turn to charge at the man and attempt to rip his throat out. Both of the buildings that the fell canines were summoned on were now in flames, fire spreading across the roofs and starting to works its way down the walls. The sorcerer mentally instructed the hover disc to retreat a few feet away from the confrontation in order to avoid the smoke and heat of the conflagration, still holding the summoning wand in one hand. He would wait and see how the swordsman would respond to this new threat before choosing his next action. His head was pounding from the constant use of magic, and Seele suspected that he could not continue this assault for much longer. For the first time he contemplated fleeing the scene and leaving this man to pick up the ashes. There were always more villages he could assault in order to capture more slaves. |

Really? That was the first thought crossing Aiden's mind as the mage came back into view. At the same time, summonsing glyphs hung in the air, giving forewarning for the type of trouble coming next. Spurts of flame sprang from nearby rooftops as circles of fire appeared, filling the air with the acrid scent of smoke and charred oak. That was followed quickly by the heavy smell of sulfur as creatures pulled themselves onto the rooftops, their hideous, fiery forms accompanied by frenzied barks and growls. Aiden didn't have to see the hounds approaching to know what they were...or that he was their sole target. "Moving," he muttered, already giving his wings a mighty beat in an effort to speed away from the alley. He flew a bit lower so as to gain speed, taking him just below the rooftops on either side. Aiden sped towards the opposing mage, noting that his opponent was floating on a disk of some sort and quickly trying to make himself scarce as the battle heated up. "Oh no you don't," Aiden muttered determinedly, a free hand already easing his lightning blade from its sheath. Red light glinted from its shimmering blade, reflecting the light of the growing hellfire around it. The air was quickly filling with smoke as the fiery conflagration spread much faster than normal flame, aided as it was by the powers of the abyss. Normally, the elf would have had some joy in fighting fire with fire...but under the circumstances, a total regroup would be far better. He heard a growl from above, causing him to twist in midair and note that a hellhound was leaping from a nearby rooftop. Its sharp rows of teeth shimmered in the light as it plummeted towards the elf, determined to rip out Aiden's throat and burn his corpse to a crisp. "Jeez, no break here at ALL!" Aiden shouted as he beat his wings again. Turning in the air again, the elf banked to the right, narrowly avoiding the hellhound and skirting the sides of the alleyway. As he faced forward once more, Aiden decided to take the battle directly to the mage--the necessity was born more out of concern for his magic stores than anything else. No need to deal with these bloody dogs either, he thought, closing his eyes as he flew. Opening them a moment later--and thankful he hadn't flown into anything--Aiden shouted, "Shol!" Aiden disappeared from sight, reappearing a second later just two meters or so above the floating dark elf. Brandishing his sword, Aiden roared as he swung down. Anger flooded through his body, fueled by the frustration from the lengthy battle...and the fact that he even had to fight the slaver in the first place. "JUST DIE!" Aiden shouted simultaneously as he closed the distance between himself and his opponent. . . |

The slavering jaws of the hellhound snapped shut on empty air as the celestial infused warrior teleported again, disappearing from the alleyway. The demonic canine yipped piteously as it slammed into the alleyway instead, its landing accompanied by the crack! of ribs snapping. The dog weakly pushed itself to its feet, whimpering and licking at its side with a tongue that tailed flames. The hellhound began to limp towards its master, cruel eyes fixing on its target. As it slowly moved down the alley the heat rolling off of its lithe body forced the discarded shards of glass to melt, its paws sinking into the molten material as if it was nothing more than bathwater. On the rooftops, the second hellhound whirled around and began to bound towards its target, each leap setting another portion of the roof on fire. Seele himself had no time to focus on his summons, He had felt the rush of magic as the swordsman activated the spell and had intrinsically knew what it was: another Blink spell. He bitterly cursed and commanded the hover disc to descend rapidly, attempting to swivel at the same time. His ability to latently detect magical power revealed the location that Aiden was transporting to almost immediately, but even with his heightened reflexes the elf was sure he couldn't fully dodge the incoming attack. The sorcerer cried out as the edge of the blade struck his right shoulder, sinking into the flesh an inch left of the protection of his cuirass. The elf bit his lip as blood gushed from the injury, but he did not completely lose his concentration. The blade struck the breastplate, grinding against the dragon scale armor. He felt his entire right arm go limp, the summoning wand falling from his limp fingers and twirling towards the street below. Despite the pain spreading from the wound and the numbness spreading down his arm he knew he could not black out now. In fact, his opponent was in an incredibly vulnerable position, his sword blade stuck in Seele's shoulder and useless for defending himself. This would be the perfect moment to strike. "The sentiment... Is mutual!" There was a undercurrent of pain in The sorcerer curled his left hand into a claw-like shape, his golden eyes glowing so brightly they seemed like two miniature stars. Once more he forced himself to skip the incantation entirely and cast the spell immediately. Claws of Darkness! The elf's outstretched fingers seemed to elongate grotesquely, the digits transformed into long, black claws that ended in wicked points. He straightened his fingers so that the claws were in a straight line and jabbed his hand directly at the swordsman's face, his face wrinkled in a feral snarl. |

Aiden slashed downward with what strength he had, cursing that he had let his Dragon's strength spell lapse before teleporting. Had it still been active, there wouldn't have been a "rest of the battle" to worry about. As it were, the elf was still somewhat pleased with his success as his lightning blade bit into the shoulder of his opponent, causing a spurt of blood to arc into the air. But at the same time, Aiden saw that his opponent was no closer to giving in just yet. "The sentiment... Is mutual!" With a shock, Aiden noticed that his opponent's hands were wreathed in dark, sharp claws aimed directly for his face. The distance between them was far too short to form a defensive spell or even to withdraw his sword from the dark elf's shoulder. There was no time to even blink away, as far as he was concerned. And, considering the nature of the oncoming attack, there was really only one course of action left...which Aiden dreaded as he narrowed down his options. Leaning back as much as he could so as to get his head out of the way of the attack, Aiden closed his eyes and shouted mentally, Eladrin! Further conversation was unnecessary as the dark claws bit into Aiden's chest, making contact just above his ribcage and cutting along. The elf shouted out in pain, but as soon as the pain began, it disappeared as Eladrin poured his celestial powers into the elf's body. Aiden's eyes flashed a deep red as he gave almost complete control to the celestial. Blood poured from the gash in his chest, but it made little difference to the elf as he ignored the pain and roared with fury. Aiden didn't need to look down to know what kind of trouble he was in. From the looks of things, even if he survived this battle, it would take some time to heal the open gash in his chest. Even with Eladrin's strength, the dark attack sent shudders of pain through his body far greater than simple physical anguish. It seemed as if the darkness itself were coursing through the elf's body, trying in vain to snuff out the light of the celestial within. But this level of attack was well within his--or rather, Eladrin's--ability to deal with. Instead of being filled with fear and despair, a rush of determined strength kept Aiden from faltering. "Caes thasti!" he shouted as holy energy funneled through his arm to his lightning blade. There were, of course, disadvantages to having a blade stuck in an opponent...but there were far greater advantages to having a metal blade lodged in metal armor. Especially in the hands of a rather furious elf. Leaning close, Aiden snarled as his eyes flashed dangerously. He was tempted to level a taunt at the dark elf, but instead, he simply settled for a grim smile. "Moji," he muttered as his blade flashed blue and let loose a powerful bolt of lightning. . . The sorcerer's eyes were bright with a combination of agony and gleeful malice as the shadowy claws pierced through the swordsman's chest, his lifeblood pouring out over the cruel digits and coating the elf's arm. The victory was short-lived, however; even through the haze of pain Seele noticed the instant change in his opponent's demeanor and the angry crimson light that filled his eyes. So he finally called on the blasted seraph, did he? He was forced to turn his away from the fierce ruby light, grimacing st the roar that rattled his ears. There was another harsh incantation and suddenly the man's sword began to shine with a bright illumination, a light that seemed to pierce through his closed eyelids and pierce his very soul. The effect of the ability was instantaneous; Seele's head fell back and his mouth opened in a silent shout as holy energy cascaded along the length of the blade and poured into his blighted flesh, causing a wave of pain exponentially more agonizing than the actual cut from the sword. So intense was the power of the positive energy that the sorcerer barely noticed the secondary surge of lightning that sent tendrils of electricity dancing over his skin and making his entire body go numb. Even with his extraordinary endurance and resistance to pain this was more than the elf could take, but he knew that he could not fall unconscious here, with the sword still thrust through his shoulder. Seele used the last of his strength to pry the sword out of his own flesh, the edge sinking into his left palm as he roughly shoved the metal, barely even noticing as the skin on his palms blistered and cracked from the holy energy still infusing the blade. Without any focused commands from him the hover disc began to fall towards the ground, Seele falling off of the metal to tumble towards the earth. As he began to fade out of consciousness the elf drew a small black ring off of his right hand and dropped it in mid-air, whispering a soft name that was lost as he plummeted towards the ground. "Nameless..." The ring suddenly stopped in mid-air, runes glowing along the surface of the flawless black circle. The jewelery uncurled and began to expand simultaneously, revealing its true shape: a shadow dragon. The cat-sized reptile glared up at Aiden with silvery eyes that lacked any distinguishable pupil, but it made no move to attack the seraph-infused swordsman. Instead it turned and dove towards the street, its wings pressed flat against its ribcage in order to maximize its speed. Only after it had dropped beneath Seele's prone form did the dragon continue to expand. In an instant the reptilian behemoth had reached its full size, easily twenty feet tall at the shoulder over double that length from its snout to the tip of its tale, its entire body covered in rows of thick, interlocking black scales. The dragon gently caught Seele in its long, leathery wings, halting its master's descent and tenderly lowering him to the ground. The beast glared up at the celestial infused once more, hissing dangerously. Its legs were as thick as tree trunks and ended in claws as long and sharp as swords, and when it snarled it revealed a mouth full of teeth the length of daggers. Flashes of negative energy coursed across its teeth, but the dragon did not strike. Instead it hunkered down around Seele, protecting his battered frame with its own bulk. Instead of rising into the air to fight Aiden or unleashing its devastating breath weapon the dragon simply whipped its tail towards the flying man, intending to swat it out of the air like a fly. It would not take any action that would further endanger the sorcerer's life. |

Aiden watched with distant interest as his combined holy and electric attack took its toll on the dark elf. Somehow, his opponent managed to wrench the blade from his shoulder armor, but was able to do little else as he fell to the ground below. Breathing heavily, Aiden beat his wings weakly, managing to stay level and even gain a bit of altitude despite his current state. He hung in the air, watching dispassionately as the dark elf fell towards what he hoped was a final death. Taking time to glance at his side, Aiden noticed that the bleeding had stopped, likely due to the healing powers of Eladrin more than anything else. But pain still coursed through his body and caused him to jerk spasmodically if he made a wrong move. Sheathing his blade, Aiden prepared to drift to a nearby rooftop when suddenly, he noticed a flicker of movement below. His eyes drifting downward, the sight that greeted him caused a wave of panic. Below, a magical plane was being opened. A moment later, the clear form of a dragon appeared, small at first, but gaining in size as it drifted towards the ground. Then, after arresting the free fall of the dark elf, the dragon grew almost exponentially, hitting the ground at its full size. Aiden just looked on with a mix of intrigue and disbelief. At first, he thought that the dark elf had managed to summon the beast from his remaining store of magic. If that were the case, then Aiden couldn’t continue the fight—anyone with that much magical reserve simply couldn’t be bested in his current state. But then thinking back and having seen no actual weaving of magic, the elf calmly assumed that the dragon had been summoned by other, less draining methods. Though it was hardly a total comfort, it did allow the elf some reason to assume that his opponent was in just as bad a shape as he was, if not worse. Aiden watched the dragon warily, already gaining altitude once more as the beast eyed him silently. There was no move to attack, aside from a quick tail swipe intended to create more distance than to actually begin the fight anew. Aiden simply remained aloft, keeping an eye on his opponent. Part of him wanted to take the strategic victory and fly away to the villagers. But that part was quickly squashed by the more pressing urge to see what the dark elf would do next. There is no way Aiden would leave such a dangerous opponent free to go…unless it was to retreat for good. . . . |

The dragon continued to watch the celestial infused warily, but when he made no move to dive down and attack the reptile turned its attention to Seele instead. The sorcerer was in bad shape. Blood was still oozing from the deep gouge on his shoulder, and the holy energy had seared the flesh around the wound with painful blisters. Nameless' eyes glowed with a combination of rage and incredulity, but the shadow dragon wasted no time in wondering how its master had been wounded. Instead it drew on its own considerable sources of magical power. The dragon had been with Seele since the destruction of their homeland, and had learned magic at the same rate as the sorcerer. The beast's tongue flicked out of its mouth, the tip drawing a rough rune in the shape of an upside-down cross in mid-air. The marking glowed with unholy power as the dragon began to speak roughly. Its voice was a deep rumble that was almost incomprehensible, the words from a dialect fo the draconic tongue that had been destroyed with Solarnia. "Whedabra batobot ui Tobor, irisv sia pliso." The rune dissolved into motes of light that floated through the air and landed on the elf's body, seeping into his injured form. "Jennu Whedab Irisv." Magical energy flowed through Seele's body, seeking out his injuries and mending them with remarkable speed. The dancing black energy congregated on the sites where he had the most grievous wounds, focusing most of the healing power on those areas. The gash on his shoulder closed, tendons and skin knitting itself back together. Sparks of magic seeped into his bruised ribs and lesser cuts as well, healing them quickly. The dragon slowly unfolded from the elf's body, seating itself next to its master and glaring up at the celestial infused. The elf's breathing slowed, becoming less ragged and more uniform. Seele slowly opened his golden eyes, stiffly rising to his feet. The magic was still working its way through his body, brining him up to his peak physical shape, but there was little time to waste. "You did well, for being the thrall of a celestial." Seele's words were soft and sibilant, lacking much of the malevolence from earlier. He looked at their surroundings with a gaging eye. The buildings that the hellhounds had spawned on were slowly being consumed by the conflagration, lighting the surroundings in shades of red and orange. "Why continue this? You have no hope for victory... Not anymore." Nameless growled in agreement, the dragon's large, bat-like wings beginning to flap. Although Seele had exhausted his own sources of magical power, the dragon had barely begun to tap its own resources. Combined with its physical strength, ability to fly, and devastating breath weapon it was a formidable foe. "Leave now, and I shall spare you. I no longer have the strength to enslave these people. I shall destroy their village instead." Seele bent over, picking up his discarded scythe and leaning it against one shoulder. Although it riled him to allow such an enemy to escape, he doubted he could destroy Aiden at the moment. He would kill him at a later date. He did not want to relinquish that pleasure to anyone else, not even his own dragon. "Attempting to stop me will simply get you killed... who would protect those aimless vermin without your strength?" The sorcerer nimbly spun the scythe through the air as the healing spell completed its work, leaving him exhausted and drained, but in perfect physical health. |

Aiden didn't have to understand the almost musical tones to know the likely effect they were having on the dark elf. What was once a haggard, seemingly broken figure seemed to slowly gain and health. The dragon's eyes were almost fixed on Aiden, daring the elf to make a move towards its slowly mending master. The elf, though hardly afraid of the dragon, knew he was hardly in any shape to respond to this new threat. His own energy stores were severely depleted and would be no use against such a beast so late in the fight. Aiden cursed his luck, but grasped the realities of the situation--he couldn't win this now. Though he was disappointed, Aiden had absolutely no qualms for settling for a draw of sorts. By any account, he had achieved his goal of getting the villagers out for the most part. Defeating the dark elf would have been quite the feather in his cap, but its non-realization wasn't devastating either...to a point. "Leave now, and I shall spare you. I no longer have the strength to enslave these people. I shall destroy their village instead. Attempting to stop me will simply get you killed... who would protect those aimless vermin without your strength?" Aiden grunted at the thought that he was being "spared." Dragon aside, the fact the dark elf was still alive was more a fluke than anything else. Time and time again, Aiden had held the upper hand. Even now, if it weren't for the dragon... Take him up on the 'offer,' elf, Eladrin's calming response echoed in Aiden's mind. Earlier I chided you for running...now it seems to be your only choice for the moment. You've achieved your goal. It's time to leave and fight another day. Though the very same thoughts had gone through his mind just moments earlier, now that they were being said aloud--or rather, inwardly--for some reason a resistant streak coursed through the elf. Part of him wanted to continue the fight anyway. Of course...that streak died as another spasm of pain moved through his body. Resolve or not, the fact that he was injured could no longer be ignored. He could continue the fight, drawing on Eladrin's strength to sustain him for a time, but at what cost? Nothing more than had already been achieved--the safety of the villagers--would come of the expanded effort. And if he lost his life, Seele's taunt would come true without doubt--who was strong enough to protect the refugees other than Aiden, even in his present state? Sighing, Aiden growled in frustration, but bowed to the pressure of his own body and the celestial within. "Fine, elf," Aiden replied, "Take the town. Knock yourself out for burning it down and achieving your victory...and say hello to your drow for me, while you're at it. When he wakes up, of course." As he spoke, Aiden slowly drifted backwards, pulling himself further out of range. He wouldn't go directly to the villagers quite yet--keeping an eye on the dark elf would be necessary just to make sure he didn't go after the new refugees. But either way, the battle was clearly over for now. But if he keeps that up, I'm sure we'll just have to meet again. . . Edited by swordhunter, Wed Oct 12, 2011 12:06 pm.

Seele ignored the barbed comment about his men, instead turning to his dragon and murmuring a few soft words. The reptile nodded its assent and lowered its scaly head like a ramp. The shadow sorcerer nimbly stepped onto his mount's spine, hopping up its neck to seat himself near the beast's shoulder blades. A short command from the elf and one of the chains wrapped around his arm unfurled to curl around the dragon's neck instead, acting as a makeshift set of reins. The massive reptile began to beat its wings faster, the wind from the movement throwing up clouds of dust around the animal. With a roar the shadow dragon leapt into the air, flapping furiously in order to lift free of gravity and soar into the air. Seele kept his glowing gaze directed at the celestial infused during this entire process, preparing to warn Nameless at the slightest sign of provocation from the elf. Surprisingly, no attack was made. The man simply watched as the sorcerer rose into the air on the back of the dragon, the beast's scales melding into the night sky so that it almost seemed to disappear. "Raze it to the ground." The dragon roared again, swiveling in midair so it plummeted towards the ground. As it dropped through the air the beast opened is wide maw, a magical sigil appearing directly in front of it in the air. Black flames curled around the runes as Nameless rumbled the incantation to another spell, black energy sparking along the creature's teeth. "Whedabra batobot ui Ixen, cuigna wer treskri." Seele could feel the arcane energy building up around them, almost as if the air pressure had increased in their immediate vicinity. He simply hunkered down on the dragon's back, knowing what was coming next. "Kothar Ixen!" The magical glyph compressed into a pinpoint of dark energy, shooting straight past Aiden to strike the edge of the town. Nameless beat its wings furiously to stay aloft, growling with satisfaction as it winged away from the impact point of the spell. Flames as black as night roared into life an instant later, setting the struck building ablaze in seconds. The black flames burned much hotter than any natural conflagration, and the inferno would prove almost impossible to quell. Seele knew that demon fire was a dangerous tool, one that not truly be tamed until all the available fuel in an area had been devoured by the obsidian flames. Thankfully, he did not plan on staying in the village long enough to see the effects of the spell. "Goodbye, elf. The next time we meet you will not be so lucky." Without another word Seele directed his dragon down towards the house where he had accidentally struck Jabbuk with the black bolt spell. The dragon ripped through the roof of the building with its claws, throwing the rubble aside as it tore the entire second story off of the structure. Nameless coiled its tail around the unconscious drow. The rest of Seele's operatives had either been defeated by Aiden, were too weak to rescue, or had already fled into the surrounding hills. The scimitar-wielding drow was the only one of his minions worth saving. Before the black flames could reach the wrecked home the shadow dragon had taken to the air once more, disappearing into the night sky within moments. The demon fire continued to spread throughout the village below, merrily consuming the homes and possessions of the unfortunate townsfolk. |

Aiden flew through the air, the impact of his wounds and bruises finally beginning to take their toll as he lowered his altitude. The smell of smoke hung in the night air, a scent that was bound to spread as the demonic flames of the dark elf gradually engulfed the village. It was clear that the place was a loss, but at least its citizens were more or less safe. Though those already killed or captured couldn't be helped, Aiden was anxious to see how many of the villagers Will had managed to get out of the town. "That was a bit of a handful," the elf muttered, gradually angling down to the ground just at the edge of the village. Looking up the main road just a few meters away, Aiden could see a pair of figures moving towards him rapidly. Even from here, the elf could see the glint of drawn blades. "Great," Aiden said under his breath as he landed and shifted uncomfortably. "Aiden!" came a familiar, gruff voice. Aiden breathed a sigh of relief and fell to a knee as he realized he could finally concentrate on dealing with his own wounds. "Thank goodness, Will. You had me a bit worried there." "You?" Will replied with a now visible smile, "Worried? Really now?" As he came closer, the smile faded to a grim line of concern. Aiden's tunic was splashed with dark splotches, clearly indicating that the elf was wounded. Rushing forward to his friend, Will placed a hand on the elf's shoulder. "Do you-?" "No no, I'll be fine, keep your magic," Aiden replied, sounding much weaker than he actually felt. Before Will had even come forward, Aiden had already started using a powerful healing spell to address the gash in his chest. The bleeding would stop, but a large scar would likely remain. As usual, I seem to get trophies for all of my battles, the elf thought with a tired smirk, It's starting to get a bit old, honestly. You'd think they'd save trophies for downright wins instead of simple draws. Aiden snapped out of his thoughts to ask Will, "And the villagers? How did they fare?" "We...got most out, thanks to you," Will replied hesitatingly. He put his sword away and placed his arms on Aiden's shoulders. Lifting slowly, Will placed Aiden's free hand around his own shoulders. Coming forward, the second man--Aiden recognized him as the young Ryn from earlier--helped to support the elf's other side. "Thank you," Aiden said, genuinely happy for the help. "No problem, elf," Will shot back, "Anything for the man who almost single-handedly destroyed our village." "You'll be glad I at least made sure it was empty first," came Aiden's gruff reply, far more amused than the tone would suggest. "Yes, well next time you visit, how about you stay outside of the town borders? That'd be much less for us to deal with I think." "How about you give me more wine to ward off my destructive tendencies!? That would likely fix the whole situation!" The two men went back and forth, though Ryn looked on at the pair with a look of shock...and complete confusion. "I'd give you more wine," Will began, bemused. "Though only if you stay in one piece the next time. You keep losing flesh every time you come to visit...and I'm not quite sure you're ready for booze yet." The trio made slow, but steady progress down the road as the sky to the east began to lighten to a soft purple, signaling the swiftly approaching sunrise. . . All done! |
