Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own.

In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins.

There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free.

Tand sighed, he had found this small town on the map and decided to visit it, maybe he could find someone interesting to talk to, but so far his luck was poor and he had found no one to drink with or spend the day with... he might as well move on, after a drink or two of course. He entered the tavern and simply sat at the bar, he listened to people talking about how slavers had been killed in Istan City and an illegal kidnapping operation having been found by a man named Kalim. He also heard them talk about the giant sandworm, that looked to be half dragon, that was found in the desert, said to have been killed by some insects called Mana-Maws, large mouths and they devour flesh and magic alike. Though rumor apparently said that some black feathers were found on the ground, and some flesh that was left behind had arrow holes in it, rumors of someone imitating the Black Bowman were rising, Tand sighed, he hated it when he had to do such large scale things... he just wanted to stay in the background and stay out of the spotlight... he couldn't let his identity slip again.

He looked up to his shoulder his pet raven, Nevermore, was perched on his shoulder, it sqauwked loudly to gain the barkeep's attention, Tand ordered some ale as he continued to listen in on other conversations, hoping to hear something of interest, perhaps something would find him if he couldn't hear about anything... oh well, all he could do for now was sit, drink, and listen.

It was with worry she strode into the tavern, her eyes low. She looked around hurriedly, past foreigner's faces and at the mud brick walls behind them. Lanterns swayed, her worries grew. A few stopped to look at the form wrapped tightly, hands clenching cloth. How did one hire a mercenary? She had never done it before. What did one do if the mercenary...died? The worries crept into her being until a finger prodded her in the sternum. He spoke thickly, in a language she barely understood. She could greet in Istani, but not much else.

"I-I want to hire a mercenary." Elena said in common, unbelievably quietly. The istani cocked his head slightly.

"I wish to hire a mercenary!" Elena called out in common. She raised a few golden coins - they were easily a month's wage for most. There were no immediate takers. Did they not know Istani? Did she not flash enough gold? Was it too much, did they fear for their lives? Doubts swirled, sweat gathered thanks to fears and the desert heat. She looked about, then noted the man with a raven and a bow. He certainly looked odd enough to be a mercenary! With a few steps she was at his table, planting down the coin. Switching to Istani, she tried her limited and awkward vocabulary.

"Follow." She murmured. Then, in common, "I need a fighter."

Tand looked at the woman who walked in, she muttered something... but he couldn't here it. Then he heard her cry out, holding up gold coins... geez was she stupid, she would be mugged for that kind of coin. He saw her walk over to him, sitting down and giving him orders already... he nodded his head to her and spoke in common, "I can understand ya in common ya know? Also, ya shouldn't wave that much coin around, yer likely ta' get mugged by tha' men who come lookin' fer the job." He looked around, he saw several men staring, obviously coveting the money and the fact that he would probably get it, he hated this kind of attention. Why couldn't they be coveting his amazing pink coat?

He saw his ale arrive and drank from it slowly, "We don't need ta' rush off yet, right? Lemme finish my ale and we can talk business, payment, where ya need ta' go, ya know, tha' usual stuff fer a mercenary. Oh, right, we should introduce ourselves, my name is Tandorus, call me Tand though, my hobbies are archery, flirting, and ta' teach my raven, Nevermore, how ta' say jokes." He looked at his raven, Nevermore, who immediately started to sqauwk, "I'm tha' Black Bowman! Tha' Black Bowman! SQAUWK!" Tand didn't freak out, that would have shown his guilt, he simply let himself laugh, "See... he thinks I'm tha' Black Bowman... I would have ta' be a few hundred years older then I am now? Right everybody?" He heard quite a bit of laughter and agreement, Tand didn't look threatening at all, only a quiver on his back with his arrows and short bow inside it.

He finished off his ale and stood up, looking to the woman, "Now, lets go so we can talk business and tha' like, lead on beautiful." He readied himself and made sure Nevermore was on his shoulder and had not decided to fly off randomly, he hated to part with his pet, even if it caused him more trouble then anything else. He would follow his new employer and decide after he hears what she needs him to do, if he will take the job or not.

Elena promptly hid her coins again with a nervous smile. At least this man was willing to help. She was happy for the suggestion, Elena was not used to hiring anyone directly. He spoke some more, it proved this man was quite talkative. Elena sat down on the opposite side of his table and waited patiently. Her worries had faded a little bit, but they were still there. The raven squawked and she jumped, declaring the man to be the Black Bowman. Elena didn't know what it was, but from the reactions she assumed it wasn't true. He stood and she lead him outside into the scorching sun. She pulled the cloak tighter over her pale skin.

"The town over has problems. Creatures have overtaken it." Elena said. She had prepared for this moment, when she'd need to say something.

"I only barely escaped, they are quick and dangerous." She explained further. Only if it was taken would she drip feed him more details, just enough to fight what they were up against. Elena had to be careful, cautious even.

"I'll pay well and fight alongside you." Elena suggested. From beneath her cloak she drew a massive two handed hammer, spikes jutting out from it in a ring at the top. She hefted the weapon somewhat stiffly over her shoulder, allowing it to weigh her down slightly.

Tand followed her and listened, nodding the town over has creatures infesting it... well he could probably handle it himself, he was fast and easily the best shot in all of Istan. He smiled, "Of course I'll help ya, now I'm goin' ta need all of tha' details, ya know, a rough estimate of enemy forces, and what yer bringin' to tha' group besides a big hammer." He walked down the roads a ways... he looked up into the sky and sighed, he was asking a someone he didn't know about enemy forces and her own skill... it wasn't right to not show his own. He took out his black shortbow, stringing it quickly and taking out an arrow, he aimed and shot it, watching it harmlessly passing through wood, pottery, and other unliving targets, he recalled the arrow to his quiver and put his bow away. He looked back to her, "What I've got is perfect marksmanship and arrows that can go through any non-livin' material, so I can snipe through doors and walls, pretty handy, eh?"

He turned back to her and smiled, "So beautiful, I never caught yer name... since we'll be workin' ta'gether it'll be best to at least know that much about each other, right?" He just needed to be friendly for now... he had no material to flirt with her and he usually considered it bad karma to flirt with your boss... sometimes they severely dock your pay. Well he'd find out soon how she'd react, might as well have some fun while on this mission of eradication.

Elena had no idea of the enemy forces. It couldn't have been that many, the village she was hiding out in had about eight people. How many creatures would that create, she wondered. She had to observe the creatures more closely, but they weren't kind to observers.

"I suppose there are maybe six to twelve creatures. I can't help much beyond using this hammer, but this hammer is really good at killing things." Elena suggested. Elena was no good at killing things, but she'd keep that to herself. The girl watched has he demonstrated his prowess, cocking her head slightly to the side as he did so. The arrow simply passed through everything! Was that useful? The glowing arrow zipped back to his hand.

"Oh. I see." Elena said. That was some sort of enchantment! Brilliant Energy, she suspected. Her confidence returned, . He then called her beautiful, which got a slight recoil.

"Uh, I'm from the north and my name is Elena. What about you?" Elena asked. Was giving her name a good idea? She wasn't entirely sure. She began to walk down the road, towards the next village over.

"The next village isn't far, although I don't think approaching on the road is a good idea. General Olafson always told me to avoid roads, roads are poor terrain for approaching an enemy-held village." Elena explained. The General's words were actually going to become handy? She could scarcely believe it.

Tand smirked, the enemies were low in number but still three to six times their size in numbers, that was good, his arrows could pin them to the ground or kill them quickly, he just needed to do the same thing he always did, aim, shoot, kill, piece of cake. He smirked at her, "I told ya in tha' bar, names Tandorus, call me Tand, I'm Istani by blood, but my friends in tha' deep cities think I might have some dwarf in me." He had lots of friends, not many were alive anymore though, mostly the elven elders in a few small villages and a few dwarves that he fought with during a goblin war, he had played his part masterfully in that little exchange.

Tand winked at her, "Tha' man is right, marchin' ta' enemy lands by road is usually a bad idea unless it's a very large, very noisy distraction, but since we've got no distraction, yer gonna have ta' lead tha' way to this village, though once we're there I can probably handle the enemy if they don't all rush me at once." He had no doubt that they would swarm him, but if the houses were close enough together maybe he could box them in.... oh well, nothing to do but to follow his new boss and keep on moving.

Elena nodded as she lead him off the road and into the pristine white dunes. They walked up and down the drifted sand, Elena visibly tiring as she went. She simply wasn't cut out for this sort of stuff. She poked her head up above one dune, and before her lay the village. A few mud brick buildings hid beneath the tips of the dunes. A large storehouse dominated the village, doors broken from their hinges but propped up somehow. Farm fields lay before the storehouse, with a well in their center. The actual farm plants were absent in large swathes, replaced by a few spindly brown trees in the soil. Around the tilled earth sat a pair of small farm houses, doors cracked open. She stayed Tand with her hand. Both to keep him from going up the hill and to give her a moment to rest. From the storehouse came a long, slim and sand-colored figure which examined the trees. It paused before the tree before placing its hand about the trunk, causing all the roots to rip themselves from the ground and coil up. It moved the tree to a different part of the field, planting it one more. Roots struck outwards. The slim figure moved from tree to tree, planting them in the parts of the farm that were still green.

"The rest must be hiding." Elena explained. She swung her hammer out from beneath her cloak, striking up a small amount of sand. She stood atop the dune and pointed at the farmhouse that was fairly close to them. Wind snapped at her garment as it picked up momentarily.

"We'll take the top of that house and defend it. There's only one ladder." Elena said. Her confidence burned in her. After all, this man was clearly an expert archer. If he wasn't, he wouldn't have signed up. Ele strode down the dune as movement bolted from the shadow of the house. It was canine-shaped, with a low body and fast legs. Blood pumped through it on exterior veins, passing through tawny hide. Bright gold eyes stared out to either side of its slim head, rows of teeth in its long mouth. Its front legs were armed with massive predatory claws. It made no noise as it rushed her. Elena paused and readied her hammer for one big crushing swing, her arms quivering.

Tand followed her through the desert, he noticed she was breathing slightly heavier... she was rather fragile if she couldn't take a simple stroll like this, then again it might be that he was Istani and preferred the desert to most places, thrived even. He watched as she stopped, they were either at their target or she was to tired to keep on moving, when she got up and mentioned a ladder for a building, good, he'd be able to pick them off from there. He stood up to move with her when some animal was charging her, he watched her, her body shaking a bit, he was working with a complete amateur, and dang it, that just made him want to protect his cute boss from getting eaten by some odd beast. He whipped out his bow and a single arrow, firing it in the same motion taking out a leg as it slid through the sand, he fired a second arrow, piercing the skull, he saw it sticking out of it's now open maw.

He nodded to her, his arrows returning to his quiver from their enchantment, he smiled at her, "Come on, ya gotta look professional in front of mercenary types ya know? A moment of weakness could cause them ta' decide ta' take yer money from ya by force. Ya gotta put up a strong front, though your weak side is pretty cute... I prefer cute over confident." He kept on walking, silently running to the house, climbing up the ladder, he crouched and aimed his bow, he only saw the one moving the tree, that was his current target, he fired a single arrow, watching it drop to the ground as the arrow hit it square in the back of the head. He turned to her, "Ya think I shoulda just wounded him so they would all come out at once? Or do ya' like my idea of pickin' 'em off one at a time?" It didn't really matter, he planned on taking them all down one at a time before they got to the ladder, he mentally commanded his arrow to return to the quiver and took out another, waiting for a single sign of life.

Elena grimaced at his suggestion, shifting her hammer's bulk. His arrows had sunk into their single foe flawlessly, which brought back some of her confidence.

"It isn't easy to look professional, this is my first time even in real combat! Olafson only gave me a few pointers on how to use this hammer." Elena explained indignantly. Another arrow sailed by, sinking itself into the creature in the distance. It fell over momentarily, but promptly stood back up and fled into the storehouse. It took the trees it passed by with it.

"Sprightly thing for something so...slim and tall." Elena murmured. Howls and guttural roars came from within the storehouse, and creatures came pouring from it. Six in total, the pack of the fast and light creatures tore out from the storehouse. Elena stood just behind Tand and raised her hammer.

"I'll step in if they get too close." She murmured.

Tand chuckled, was she just testing herself... or was she really trying to do something good, who knows, there wasn't time for questions. The man he thought he had killed got up and ran away... odd, most people would have died from it or been crippled beyond most conventional healing magic, he recalled his arrow to his hand and aimed at a new threat, more critters rushing them from, what he guessed, was what they used as an animal pen. Six beasts rushed them, he heard her say she could handle some of them... good, even his skill wouldn't be able to take out six opponents from this range, he could get four at most.

His eyes dilating as his hands worked as a machine, loading the bow, pulling back, and letting it go, he was a fast shot. He counted mentally at how many arrows he shot, even arrows the head didn't seem to kill the things immediately, their bodies still moving even after their brains are destroyed. He smiled as the fourth one fell, only two more making it out of his little arrow storm alive, immediately he recalled his arrows and turned back to Elena, "I hope ya can handle them, I'm gonna try ta' find out what that guy is doin', I'll fire an arrow through tha' roof inta' tha' sky to show ya where I am, good luck with tha' beasties."

He looked over the edge of the building he was on, it wasn't a long drop, it wouldn't break any bones, but it was best to lower himself slowly. He put his bow in his quiver and slowly lowered himself, holding onto the roof until he was simply hanging there, letting for a short non-lethal drop. He turned to run towards the building, he needed to find out what was happening, and it was best to start his investigation with the thing he was supposed to kill.

Elena growled at the rushing creatures. Tand handled several of them, leaving Elena with a pair. He suggested that he get a chance to leave.

"No, wait, I'll go with you. It isn't safe alone." Elena called out. She jumped down from the house, awkwardly landing on all fours as she did. Her hammer thundered into the ground beside her, and she quickly hefted it as she rose to her feet. The final two creatures whipped around the side of the building, howling at her. She grunted and fully swung the hammer, dropping it awkwardly into the creature's shoulder. It sunk with a meaty thud and the crack of bone, shoulder plates shattering and sending blood into the air. It froze momentarily as her blow carried through, cracking it across the face and deflecting into the other creature's midsection. Ribs broke inwards, the hammer sinking deep as it did.

"They are very fragile, aren't they." Elena said. She paused and examined the creature, lifting up almost paper-thin sheets of bone plate. They cracked beneath even her delicate gloves. She grimaced and stood, pulling the hammer with her. She spun it around, bringing it back to a proper hittin' position. The girl surged forwards, bringing Tand along. Elena felt it was vital that she was at the front to witness these things first hand.

They stepped into the storehouse, where the creature stood before a building covered in flesh. Columns of flesh carried massive cysts, each one filled by a quivering, half-formed creature. In the center of the building a pair of the trees were shriveling into nothing, their roots linked into a mass of tissue. The creature turned to gaze at them, eye shot out by a single arrow. A maw split its face, with a great guttural roar. The cysts burst, spraying red liquid across the floor as the creatures fell. Many died on impact, a precious few managed to stand on spindly legs and rush the pair. Many of the creatures were unique, different. One had massive plates of bone, half-formed but still thick. It was clearly the slowest of the bunch. The tall creature reached down and grabbed one of the creatures that injured itself, throwing it across the room with surprising force. Elena ducked to the side as blood sprayed from the wall behind them.

Tand grimaced, what were these things, some form of monster or magic mutation... maybe an experiment gone wrong? Either way he needed to end them, he quickly notched an arrow onto the string and fired it quickly, killing the first one rushing them, all he had time for was a second shot, taking out another spider-like being. He saw at least another four moving, two of them were already getting ready to nip at his heals as the other two seemed to come at them at a snail's pace. Tand looked down at the little skittering beast charging his legs, it was rather small and ugly... like a giant malformed spider. He hopped a step back to dodge it's bite maw, stepping forward afterward to punt it, sending it sprawling against the far wall.

Tand immediately called back one of the arrows he shot back into his hand, drawing back the bowstring and firing it into one of the thicker beasts, the arrow glowing yellow as it pierced the plates. Summoning it back he fired it once more, sending it through the other one's head. Tand brought his bow up, firing two arrows in rapid succession, pinning one of the thing they had been chasing to the wall, an arrow in it's leg and another in it's right shoulder. Tand smirked, "Ya think this guy can speak common or Istani? If it can we can interrogate it... gain some information, but if this guy won't talk... or if it can't understand us, we should jus' kill it. Can't waste time if there's more of 'em lurkin' about, make a decision quick though, a good commander thinks on their feet." He quickly summoned his arrows back into his quiver, taking out a single arrow and placing it on his drawstring, ready to pull it back and fire it in a moment's notice, it was best to stay alert at all times.

Elena stepped backwards, carefully swinging her hammer as the creatures lurched near. Arrows whipped by her with striking speed. Tand was quite the marksman, wasn't he? Her hammer caught one of the sluggish beasts in an arc, crushing its skull into the floor. Blood and plates cracked outwards. As she raised the ponderous weapon, one of the quicker beasts darted through the air, its bulk crashing into her. Soft claws barely pierced her skin as she felt the creature's bones shatter. She tumbled backwards, the creature's blood pouring over her. Elena wrenched the broken beast off of her, and quickly rose to her feet.

The slim creature wavered back and forth, tan skull pierced by a single arrow. The beast's arms rose, protecting the structure of flesh behind it. Elena approached it slowly.

"I'm not sure it can speak. You know, crazy mouth and no tongue." Elena said. She walked up to the creature and put it down with one tremendous strike of the hammer. It bent awkwardly in its midsection, freezing up as it fell. She raised the weapon again and crushed its skull. She began hammering the sections of the fleshy thing taking up the middle. Sweat mingled with the blood on her body. Gradually the great structure died, pouring red fluid from wounds left by enormous shattered bones.

"This hammer crushes and kills the undead, and its enchantment has been functioning this whole fight. I'm well trained in the arcane arts, so I'm going to take some time and study them." Elena said. With careful hands she picked over the creatures, pulling their fragile bodies apart. She glanced up to him. She needed to trust someone.

"I might have caused this. My father...infected me with a terrible, awful plague. All he told me was to be careful what I drink...I drank from their well for the past week, they began dying last night." Elena murmured. She stared off into the distance, towards the ocean.

"I came on a ship. Where did that ship land? I made an escape on a rowboat, so I don't have a clue." Elena explained. She continued examining the creatures, working spiraling threads of magic into them.

Tand nodded as she explained that it probably couldn't talk, he nodded, "Probably not, but I dunno, seen crazier things before sweet cheeks, I'm not one fer assumin' anythin'." He listened to her... explaining that it might be her fault, she could be a walking plague, ready to happen, Tand almost wanted to raise his bow, shoot her in the back of the head, kill her before the so called plague could get to anyone else... but he didn't, he couldn't do it, he was weak to women, he knew that, he wouldn't kill them unless they were horrifying monstrosities.

He stood nearby, looking around for anything interesting, he saw something to the side... an old leather bound book, he walked over and stooped down, picking it up. He looked through it, it was just a history book of Istan, it was being written by someone in the village, but it had stopped and became more about magical theory and about a long since done demonic ritual that was done where their village was currently standing, it was carried out by an unnamed soldier over eight hundred years ago. Tand's eyes flashed fear, how were there still these things out here, whoever wrote this knew about his dealings with demons for the sake of Istan City, the only part unknown was his name, it gave him chills, he slid the book into his jacket, hoping the young lady hadn't see it, keeping his secret should be the number one goal for him at the moment, more of these works could be in the village, he needed to find them all before his boss did.

Then his mind thought, maybe the demonic magic from years ago did this... or had some influence, but that shouldn't be right, the deal happened over eight hundred years ago, even with one thousand sacrifices it should have all dissipated right now... what kind of village would build itself in an area where demonic magic tainted the area... yes, it was all probably gone, if it was his fault, he would have to hide the book at all costs, even though it didn't have his name, it had an illustration of him wearing his old uniform and with shorter hair, his face still unchanged since that time eight hundred years ago.
