Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own.

In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins.

There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free.

I have come to stop Vernon from destroying another helpless Imythessian traveler.

Her castle wasn't the only place to fall to ruin while she had been away. Much of the world of Imythess seemed as though it was in disarray, and those who still remembered her name continued to come to her doorstep to ask for her favor. This was how she had heard of the evil that haunted the marsh, and how often those who entered it never returned in one piece, if at all. Something foul had burrowed down in its murky depths, festering like a gangrenous wound. The fetid stench of the dangers outside her Balefire doorstep had grown intolerable, and it was time to act.

She had been watching the trees for nearly two months, silently stalking her prey. Eventually, a pack of unusually bold rats lead her to a putrescent nest filled with the grisly remains of half-eaten passersby. There was no mistaking, this was the origin of the infestation. She returned to the castle only briefly after that to gather what resources she might need from her armory to combat the deep-rooted nuisance.

A blazing light filled the treetops above the carriage, accompanied by a deafening roar that served to shock and awe the creatures of the night that stood below. A meteoric mass came crashing through the trees behind the attacking vermin, shrieking in protest against the impending slaying of an innocent man.

The purplish, smoky light that radiated from Ninniach, the Witch Queen's prismatic dragon companion, filled the marsh with a haunting twilight. Lothlómendil rode upon the great beast's shoulders, Bow of Moonlight aimed for the Therianthrope's weak points. Prismatic light glittered off of her polished armor, making her almost unbearable to behold by those whose eyes were adjusted to suit the night whilst breathing hope into the hearts of the innocent.

"Yield, vermin, and face the last protector of this dark corner of the world!" Her voice boomed off of every surface, surrounding her target from all sides.

Diana sat back and sighed as they went. That could have been such a fiasco, it had been the best decision to simply toss the human back. She would now be safe to travel while he toyed with the poor bard in his grasp. People like that often took their time, much as Diana liked to do when she was sure she had control of a victim. But all was safe and clear from he-

A bump should her out of that thought as someone clung to her wagon. "What the-" she spurted but before long there were also small holes in the top of the coverings of her wagon. Taking a bit of a chance, Diana got back up and stuck her head out to see the bard on her wagon, desperate to escape the Master of the Marsh, who she now was was... a giant rat man on a sleigh that glided over the marsh with ease and was pulled by a flock of bats.

She was just about ready to consider this as the weirdest sight she had ever seen in her entire life when then came a great big dragon, with a beautiful woman riding upon it challenging the Rat Man Marsh Master. Diana took a moment to absorb this scene in it's fullness. Once she had there was only one thing she could say to it all.

"When did my life get so damn insane?" she asked to the world around her. She popped her head back in her wagon and pulled back out the sword and stabbed at the little holes in her roof to kill whatever the Marsh Master had thrown up there. "Damn you, bard! You were not worth all this trouble!" It was just like her to blame the only man she could think of in this situation.

It bloody worked! Sure, there were a great many things that could go wrong, but now he was heading clear, and that Marsh Rat was-

Gliding right beside them on a sleigh floating above the muddy forest floor and powered by bats. "That isn't fair..."Shan moaned. All he needed was to fire a single leisurely crossbow bolt and it would be all over for Shan. It wasn't as though he could dodge. The Marsh Rat reached into his sack and pulled out something to toss at him.

Shan closed his eyes, expecting an explosion or poison. Instead, he heard a chittering sound. He peered across the roof to two small furry creatures.

"You know, you'd almost be cute if you didn't have those claws and-" They grinned. "Yep, there are the teeth."

The vampire's blade pierced through the roof to where the squirrel things had landed, but they had already leapt for Shan's face. He closed his eyes in time to keep his eyes, but one cut deep into his eyelid, making him yelp as blood poured down his cheek. The other started biting and clawing at his arm. They didn't seem to be cutting deep enough to kill him instantly, but they were deep incisions, and he'd soon lose his grip from bloodloss-induced weakness if nothing else. He began to hum, and a number of the cuts and bites closed. The rodents continued their work as Shan hummed and did his best to knock them off without releasing his handhold or exposing his face. He was losing, though. His healing spell wasn't very strong, and they moved fast.

He wondered how things could get worse.

That's when the explosion hit. A voice boomed from every surface and filled his senses. "Yield, vermin, and face the last protector of this dark corner of the world!"

Shan risked his face on a glance. Above him, illuminated by its own internal magic, was a great dragon ridden by an elf. Shan moaned. "I'm really hoping this turns out well for me."

It won't his cynicism said. Your past record marks this as another downward turn.

Shan continued humming and flailing at the rats, his hand cramping and weakening. All I have to do, he thought, is survive the next few minutes. Just hang on...

There was a disturbance in the Marsh. Too fast for the involvent of magic to not be at work, and probably very powerful magic at that. It couldn't be any of the Divschatten which probably meant it was some powerful foe seeking the bounty on his head. This wasn't the first attempt and it sure wouldn't be the last. Vernon growled and called forth Raffelsia as he turned around to face the large display light. He couldn't see her well, the light was too bright to make out details but he could see her silhouette on top of a dragon. They were now close enough that Vernon could smell them. The dragon was prismatic, but there was a lot more interest with the elf. Aside from smelling delicious there was something familiar about her. He had smelled her scent before. It was back when Famine was present. Vernon couldn't recall the details of the encounter, but it was likely the elf didn't either.

Vernon winced when she enhanced her voice with magic. It was bad enough she was trying to blind her, and now crabby little elf was trying to deafen him to add further injury to her insulting words. "How dare you! I am the Master of the Marsh. I am the only protector it needs and right now you are trespassing you pig-headed wench," Vernon growled. Vernon was hoping to stall for time but he soon noticed his mouth got ahead of his thoughts; insulting foes often didn't help in putting off a fight. As Vernon spoke the moster flower's vines began to snake around his body as the large flower rose out of his backpack. With blood red petals spanning wider than Vernon's back, Vernon doubted it would go on noticed though it would likely provided enough distraction for Algernon to evade detection. The sludge drake peeked out from a pocket in his diminutive rat-like form and readied himself to join the fray.

Vernon knew were to strike. He needed to limit the Dragon's mobility if not kill it out right. The former sounded more appropriate. This elf and her pet deserved to suffer. Vernon waited on her to make the first move, confident that react in time. His hand crossbow was at side and already armed. The elf held something too, he couldn't tell for sure but it seemed to be a bow. This could easily get ugly if she were good with that weapon. He didn't have much room to move and until he debilitated the dragon's wing she also had the upper hand in maneuverability. This easily reminded Vernon why he hated blasted mages.

Still following their last orders the bats, the sleigh still followed the wagon even though a few of bats were spooked by the oddities occurring behind them.

Of all the negative qualities about the vermin she hunted, at least he was not a coward. But he was a fool. While he proclaimed himself Master of the Marsh and denied her request to yield, the Elven witch adjusted her aim and fired a series of deathly accurate arrows at his feet in the blink of an eye. She had chosen two light-enchanted shafts, each one intended to pierce his foot and pin him to the floor of his sleigh.

She had been planning to shoot the reigns that bound each bat to the sleigh to stop its forward progression, but mid-chase she had recognized the strange vehicle's craftsmanship. It was a twisted twin of the same sleigh she kept at the castle, in which case it needed no beast to drive it onward. Cutting the tethers would only release the bats into the air to assail her or the man she was trying to save, so they were better left alone.

Instead, she pulled Ninniach's reigns so that he swooped down lower and swerved to the side, bringing her closer to the sleigh. She opened the pouch at her hip with her free hand and summoned forth an object from within. "Stop him!" A golden length of rope hurled itself from the mouth of the pouch toward the sleigh, latching on and knotting itself around the runners at the bottom of the carriage before whipping its other end into a lasso around the nearest tree. The unbreakable silk should serve to effectively bring the sleigh to a screeching halt.

Sorry for the delay!

Arcane Archer level 1 gives all my arrows the effect of the True Flight Arrow spell while AA level 2 makes them armor-piercing. My accuracy is also increased by the Precise Shot and Mounted Archery feats, and the Marksmanship master level skill.

I'm also presuming that having Ninniach move closer the way he did would work much like he was dodging the next attack, or at least make him harder to accurately target.

I used my Light Arrows to shoot at you, and my Flying Rope in the last move.

As she missed the vermin with her blade, and still heard the things scurrying to bite at the bard on her wagon, Diana bellowed in frustration. The cover of her wagon had been well torn apart now, and there was simply no way she could hide from the sun in it now. Well fine, now she would just have to repair it. And she would not be able to repair it in the sun, no, NOW she had to go back to Balefire and wait a few more days to leave. That was just perfect.

"Ash! Turn around!" she cried to the worg driving her wagon and Ash looked back at her with a look on her face that plainly said she thought the vampire was a raving lunatic with this suggestion. "You heard me!" The worg seemed to shrug and then made a u-turn, heading straight for the damn rat that had ruined their trip. Diana made a cut in her cover large enough to stick her sword out as they passed the rat to cut off his head as they went.

"You ruined my meal," she cried, and whether she hit or not they would continue passed the rat, hope to dodge the dragon, and start heading back towards Balefire. Surely the bard could deal with the pest problem, if he could stick on during the u-turn.

OOC: ... Not going to lie, this scene in my head made me laugh.

With a lucky flail and kick, Shan managed to dislodge one of the squirrels and send it flying off the coach. There was a great deal of...something going on between the Marsh Rat and Dragon Elf, but a demon clawed squirrel trying to eat your face tends to distract one from the larger things in life. Then the coach performed a sharp u-turn. Perhaps, if Shan had some warning, he could have braced himself and moved with the curve. As it was, his prone body was only situated to deal with an unchanging velocity. Thus, he found himself flung off, thrown to the side of the road, rolled violently over the mucked ground, and finally coming to a stop staring up at the canopy. The entire trip wasn't aided by the fact the squirrel had managed to keep its grip on his thigh the entire time. Both laid dazed for a span.

"Oh dear gods, I'm still alive," Shan said aloud. The squirrel detached itself from his leg and crawled up to his chest to grin down malevolently. Shan glared with his one good eye and grabbed it. "Guess what, you hellrat, I can use both hands now." He stood on shaky feet and flung the hated furball as far as he could. He hoped it bashed its head on a tree.

He moved deeper into the forest to avoid being noticed by the two combatants on the road and took some deep breaths of delicious air. Well, now he knew that there were things to hide from, he could continue through the woods, hopefully being stealthy enough to avoid any more unpleasant surprises. The Dragon Elf could deal with the Marsh Rat to her heart's content without him. After all, she had a dragon. All he had was a-

Shan suddenly realized a familiar weight was missing from his abused back. He ran though the memories of the last five minutes. Past the carriage ride, past the horrendous smell that would haunt him forever, past the betrayal to...

He left his fiddle on the carriage.

"Noooooo...." He moaned, forcing his straining, bleeding legs to move. "Dear gods below and above, why me?" He took off down the road, prayed no one would take an interest in him, and chased after the carriage.

"Rafflessia!" Vernon called as he was spurred into action. In one fluid motion Vernon snatched up his hand crossbow, fired it at the weak point within the dragon's while dodging out of the way of the radiant arrows. Despite Vernon's attempt he still found himself growling in pain as both arrows entered his foot. Both struck him at impossible angles, obviously the result of more magic from his blasted foe. The arrows brought incredible pain despite not being silvered. They managed to pin his foot, which wasn't the best of situations with regeneration. That was a problem that needed to be immediately rectified. With any luck the aim of his bolt still found it's appropriate home in the Dragon's joint. Continued flight would no longer be possible, giving the Sleigh the upper hand. All he had to do was make sure he kept the elf down wind. Now that Rafflesia was out in her full glory the debilitating toxins that she breathed into the air would hopefully

Vernon growled as he liberated his foot by lifting his foot with his incredible strength. The wound began to feel better now that the blasted shafts were gone, but he needed time for it to recover before he could best take advantage of the leg. Additional Vines rose from Raffelsia and began carve arcane sigils in the air. Vernon was planning on a spell to further debilitate but quickly changed the nature of the spell as saw the rope come out. She was going to try and tether him and the only effective thing he could tethered to was the dragon or a tree. In either instance it behooved him bring the Flora of the marsh into the fight. Vernon growled as he focused on the life force of the trees around him. Vernon released the spell with a mighty roar when he saw the tree the rope was aiming for. After a green flash of energy the Cypress erupted out of the ground and joined the chase on it's long roots almost like spider legs. There was a moment in which the rope had managed to gain tension, causing the forward progress to slow, but making the sleigh rise up into the air in opposition. This unintentionally put the sleigh out Diana's reach but also gave further complications to the vampire. If she managed to get by a dragon with a wounded wing, she would also have to deal with a tree whose roots certainly blocked the path, but before she even go to those obstacles she would likely run into the flying rope which would draw the sleigh back in closer to the elf and her dragon.

(Vernon has Lightning reflexes, Quick Draw, and Master level Marksmanship, Acrobatics explaining fluid motion. Master level Athletics explians the feat of strength. Raffelsia's posions from floramancer make subjects sleepy [sluggish and slow in combat], and deiblitates their judgement giving more weight to Vernon's commands. Addtional vines are Vernon's Chakra Arms, and the spell is LiveOak/LiveCypress turning the tree into a trent.

Wouldn't moving closer make the dragon easier to hit? )

Just as Ninniach's reigns were pulled to signal him to move closer to the sleigh, the vermin fired his crossbow. The bolt struck the bone in Ninniach's left wing near the tip, causing him to roar loudly in pain. A bolt jutted out of his bone, but it had failed to strike any joints or muscles that would completely cripple him just yet. His flight slowed such that he fell further behind the racing sleigh, the likely-chipped bone causing his left wing to flutter uneasily.

The warg-driven carriage had come back to charge the sleigh, but missed as the rope pulled it up into the air. The carriage roared past, with the human Lomen was here to save following behind it. Not having fulfilled its command to stop the sleigh, the rope relinquished its grip on the now-Treant and pulled with its full six hundred pound force in an effort to slow the vehicle until a better tether site came within reach.

Ninniach dodged even further to the side to avoid the oncoming carriage, tucking his wings in and dropping until he hit the ground running. Loth reached for the ice arrows in her quiver and sent two of them flying toward the marsh rat's legs and another at the treant, hoping to freeze them both in place.

OOC

The timing of Ninniach's movement is what made him unknowingly alter where the arrow struck him. To keep the order of events straight in my head and clear to everyone, I made a timeline to the best of my ability. It took a while to piece together what was happening in a way that would make chronological sense. XD I'll probably continue to update as events unfold.

Diana was denied her chance as the sleigh seemed to flying up out of her way. But as Diana was cursing that bit of bad luck, her worg Ash was suddenly finding a lot of problems with driving this way as she found herself going straight towards a sudden living tree blocking her path. Trying to turn sharply to avoid it, the wagon swerved in the slick marsh. Neither the wagon nor Ash were made for this kind of environment, and Diana realized that her wagon was tipping over.

The wagon tipped over and slid into it the living tree, as it's worg driver yelped as she was dragged with it. Oh, what a disaster to befall them on their journey. Inside the wagon, Diana was only just beginning to right herself, a little dizzy from hitting her head. Fira the Fire Elemental was a little less confused. "I'm going to need a new wagon," she groaned to herself, going with the least of the bad news right now. She crawled her way out as quickly as she could and made to cut Ash out of her harness and made to get swiftly away from the living tree.

There was something a bit more vulnerable in being outside the cover of the wagon, but at least she was not alone, Ash and Fira at her sides. She could only hope the Dragon Rider would keep the rat too busy for him to want to have a try at taking her head.

Shan thought he managed a lucky break when the wagon swerved and toppled into the marsh, and felt even luckier when he saw Diana and her entourage leave the wagon to make a run for it. He took a few moments to breath behind a tree, waiting until his vision stopped blurring at the edges. He doubted Diana would be civil about his getting his things. She would probably not be pleased to see the person that she abandoned to the evil Marsh Rat and ultimately caused the demise of her transport. He felt himself return to reality when he peeked back around his tree. She had swerved to avoid a tree. A tree in the middle of the path. A moving, walking tree that, for some reason, had a rope tied to it.
A rope tied to Marsh Rat's sleigh.

Shan slinked into the forest. Things just had to get more complicated, didn't they?

Moving as quickly as he dared, he circled through the trees to the fallen wagon, hoping not to meet Diana on the way. He crept toward the wagon, thankful the roof was facing away from the rode. He pried his dagger free and, praying the battle would cover the sounds, he smashed his way through the damaged roof. The inside of the wagon was in disarray. He dug through the detritus of the crash until he found his prize. He pulled the freshly battered case away from some broken wood and his muddy boots. He opened the case to find his fiddle was still in one piece.

"Thank goodness. I was really worried there." He held it close and climbed back out. Now, to fade back in the marsh, get as far as he could and-

A chill on the back of his neck made him turn. The tree had noticed him.

"I really hate this place..." Shan moaned. It was time to run again.

The rope's newest tact was completely unexpected. The slenger peice of rope pulled with notable force without being tied to anything. Deplorable. Despite the efforts of the swarm there was suddenlt no foward movement and the sleigh lurched into a stop before quickly being pulled in reverse. Algrenon took immeditate action and gave a highpitched call to arms. The call was immediately answered by a small swarm of rodents that charge out of the bag and leapt on to the the rope. Their weight was insufficent in making any change at all in the rope. Even the maigcal fangs and claws of the musfas failed to even cut the smallest thread of rope, but this did not make the creatures any less eager to continue the attempt.

Vernon on the other hand assumed there was nothing he could do to salvage the sleigh at the moment. The magics of the rope were quite powerful and Vernon's own magic was too selective to effectively combat it. He needed to instead focus on the archer. He had nothing to protect himself from her arrows and evn if he did the arrows seemed to roam with minds of their own, altering their path so that they struck their mark. The he needed cover before he could get near her. Not caring for the schemes of his pets he turned around and swiftly cut ther reigns binding the swarm of bats as he readied for a backflip. The action was halted by two more blasted arrows. These did not hurt as much, but ice quickly spread from the wounds. This was certainly not an acceptable positon to be left in. Vernon growled his orders as he readied himself break the hindering ice.

Released from their bonds the bats turned around and began to home in on their new target. The fact their target was on a frightneing dragon demoralized, but did not cause the swarm as a whole to flater. They had number and numbers won.

In Vernon's stead Algernon jumped of Vernon's shoulder and towards the dragon. Algernon relases the makings of magic that bound him to his diminuitive form, causing the sludge drake to increase exponentially in size. chances were this would disrupt the other dragon's momentum and the archers attention and ofcourse in a best case senario he would land ontop of the dragon ready to beat it down as well as it's rider.

The treant was struck first by the arrow and then by wagon. The arrow quickly froze the tree, though even frozen the treant was sturdy enough to take the impact of the wagon without falling over. The Ice arrow likely saved the lives of the human and the vampire. It was only a matter of seconds before the treant could break free of the glacial bonds but it was more than enough time for Shan to sneak in and escape. Shortlly after Shan escaped with his Prize the treant shattered the ice around it and swept the wagon into the Marsh waters, before resuming it's foward movement and not seeming to care that Shan was in the way.

Ninniach bellowed again as the bats swarmed his face, bringing him to a halt now that the sled had stopped. They bombarded him, biting at the soft spots in the thick, leathery skin that weren't plated in scales. He reared up onto his hind-paws, destabilizing his rider and causing her to misfire the next arrow she had locked onto the marsh rat's shoulder. The ancient reptile swatted and bit at the winged devils with wickedly sharp teeth and claws until he batted them into tree trunks with the force that only a dragon can muster without the aid of magic. Viscous beads of blood trickled down his face in narrow trails from an array of bites, which left him looking dangerously savage.

To avoid being thrown from her mount, Lomen blinked to the ground and prepared to launch another barrage of arrows at her opponent. He had already taken four arrows to his lower extremities without surrendering, proving him to be more resilient than expected. She didn't want to have to kill him, it wasn't justified for her to exchange one lost life for another that she had decided was less deserving. She simply wanted the creature to let travelers pass through unharmed, to instead hunt less gullible prey. Humanoids were so curious and trusting, most humanoids will stop for anyone that asks just to see what is the matter.

It was then that the sludge drake made its move. Reacting to the sudden movement, Ninniach and Lomen acted simultaneously. A small burst of color spray fire spewed from the ancient dragon's mouth, while a single flaming arrow fled from the archer's bow toward its soft, exposed underbelly. This fight was escalating, and if they weren't careful the whole marsh could be set ablaze.

"I ask you again, Master of the Marsh, yield. I do not wish to slay you." Mercy was considered a weakness to some, but her internal sense of justice told her to give him a chance. She would end his life if it was necessary, but until then she would use every power in her to prevent it. Even marsh rats had their place in this world.

Sorry again for the wait!

Shan ran, unable to use his arms to steady himself as he clutched his fiddle for dear life. He was slowing down, however. He was bleeding, bloody, cold, and now he was losing the last of his endurance. In a last ditch effort to lose his pursuit, he swerved into the trees, hoping the foliage would slow down any chasers more than it slowed him. His lungs, however, quickly gave up, and he was forced to lean against a tree to gulp in gasps of air or pass out from oxygen deprivation. Shoulder pressing into the thick bark, forcing himself to take slow deep breaths rather than pant, he noticed the living tree was ignoring him. Past the undergrowth, he saw the Dragon Elf and the Marsh Rat were also far more focused on their own battle than anything he was doing, and the creepy woman and her worg seemed to be long gone, or so he hoped. He was, according to all the evidence, getting off scot-free. He could start moving now, ducking through the trees, moving with stealth and care now that he knew dangers lurked here, though he couldn't think of anything worse out there than the Marsh Rat. In a few hours he could be back in Balefire, where he was sure those gentlemen had long forgotten about him, especially since he left all the money he won at the card game behind. Yes, a nice bath, something warm to eat, relatively safe and sound...

Except...

You'll never know how this ends, a small voice in his mind, his inner bard stretching and awakening. All your life you'll have the beginnings of an epic tale, and you'll never know how it ended.

And that was the problem. He'd gone through so much already, threatened and frightened and bitten and chased. Turning back now, even if it was the most intelligent thing to do, it just didn't seem...right. There was a tale here, and he needed to witness it.

Staying within the trees, Shan began to creep slowly in a wide circle until he had a fairly good view of the fight through the branches. He didn't plan to get any closer than this, and he would run at the first sign of someone noticing him, but dammit, he was a bard, or at least hoped to be, and he wouldn't be a bard who ran away from a story if he could help it. Tucked mostly behind a wide, old, trunk, a ways within the marsh's fauna, Shan watched and took note.
