Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own.

In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins.

There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free.

Soko observed as Caz very nearly kissed the box.

"I hope it isn't anything useless, like a teddy bear." The demoness commented. Caz stowed the box and they headed off to adventure.

Soko's pipe lay useless, as the barkeep hated tobacco smoke. What was there to hate? She sipped on strong spirits as Caz mused about the box. This same line of speech had been pursued since they found the darn thing in the first place.

"Maybe he put some chocolates in there." Soko suggested. Her mind flicked to images of hundred year old melted chocolate filling the bottom of a box. It wasn't pretty.

"If you think one of those anomalies will help, go for it. Though if I had a suggestion, why not find an antimagic field? Wouldn't that cancel the enchantments?" The demoness asked. She leaned back slightly in her chair.

"We shouldn't do anything dangerous, honestly. I'm not particularly experienced in the ways of combat magery. You are but I think I'll just hold you back." Soko said, her voice soft. She didn't quite make eye contact with Cazmia.

"A vacation would be good. Maybe we'll find something on a vacation." Soko exclaimed. She stared up into the air for a moment. She put her empty mug down. Her finger traveled around the rim of the glass.

"Maybe we should go to a beach? Or a big warm forest! How about the desert? I've never been to those places." Soko stated, a big smile on her face.

Before Cazmia responded, she sat up and thanked the cute waitress who sat down a small plate of appetizers next to the box. The runic mage took a bite out of one of the meat-stuffed rolls, then poked her list of assignments absentmindedly. "Well... there's this one tiny island about ten miles north of Nalai. My old roommate went there for a trip once, and apparently it was gorgeous and definitely not filled with man-eating monsters." She suddenly jumped, as though she was surprised by her own sudden idea. "I have the perfect way to get us there, too! It'll only take a few days, tops."

Erin leaned forward to look over to the other side of the tavern, munching on her meat rolls all the while. Near the bar area, the same waitress that had served them earlier was standing between two men, clutching her large serving plate under one arm. They must have each been over a foot taller than her, too: big and brawny, with nice collared shirts and expensive jewelry. The way they leered at her -- and the way the girl shrank, uncomfortable and guarded -- sent a wave of pure fiery indignation through Cazmia. How dare they put such a nice-looking young lady through such emotional distress while she was trying to work! "Look there, Soko. We have to save her!" Without waiting for a response the wizard rose to her feet, grabbed Soko's arm and dragged her over.

The two men were a lot bigger up-close than they seemed across the room; both were giants before the vertically challenged Cazmia and Soko Nephi. This fact never even crossed Erin's mind, and she plowed past the crowd over to them without any further thought. "Hey!" she shouted. "Stop being so mean to her! Both of you!" Caz pulled her staff into view in a dramatic flourish, slamming the butt into the ground. Her face hardened into a determined stare. "Right, friend-who-is-an-extremely-powerful-mage-just-like-me?!"

Soko listened to her statements and oddly specific denial about a plausible vacation spot.

"Eh, doesn't sound all that bad if it won't take long to get there." Soko said. As long as Caz was simply being Caz, of course. Man-eating monsters wasn't an ideal vacation spot. She adjusted herself in her chair and finished off the mug with somewhat of a goofy smile. Caz's attention snapped elsewhere, and Soko's eyes quickly followed hers. It was plausibly an attempted mugging, which set Soko to thinking how to intervene. Caz bounded out of her chair, sending the demoness piling over the table to catch up.

The tiny Erin Cazmia stared down one of the men, even though they were significantly taller than her. They even had a little bit of height on the tips of Soko's horns.

"Precisely! I am a powerful ice mage." Soko exclaimed. With a flourish of her mug and a quick incantation, the former alcohol container was transformed into the handle of a blade of ice.

The bartender glowered at them, raising a mace from behind the counter.

"Maybe you should let the girl go. She's not worth your lives!" Soko menaced, wiggling her ice blade. The men glanced around quickly, noting that several other bar patrons were standing up as well. The demoness really didn't want to spill blood, she'd probably get yelled or sent to prison. An idea flickered into her mind. She made as though she was going to hand her weapon over, stretching it forward with her hand on the edge of the ice blade. She stepped forward, and as one of the goons put his arm out for the weaponized mug, she raised the weapon quickly and smashed him across the face with it. Instantly, a bar fight broke out. Tables sailed through the air, chairs were upturned and alcohol poured to the floor.

Cazmia released a loud squeak before yanking the waitress out from between the two men. A chair flew across the tavern, narrowly missing them both. The bigger guy took it in the face like a champion; the splintered furniture clattered to the ground. Caz let the girl go and cracked a man over the head with the butt of her staff, spinning to trip another behind her.

In a strange display of agility, the waitress placed her hand on the bar area and leaped over it. She disappeared. While Caz was distracted, the big man violently grabbed her by her robes and lifted her to his eye-level with one arm. She protested by wiggling her feet, but the action was useless. Foregoing struggling, she slammed the tip of her staff into his stomach. A bolt of magic exploded point-blank, hurting him just enough to drop her. She scrambled away.

The tavern had already gone to chaos in those short few seconds. Her and Soko, the cause of it all, angered the friends of the big guys, who proceeded to anger other patrons who then initiated random fights. Caz dragged her staff along the ground as she ran, leaving behind a line that glowed green. The floorboards buckled and ballooned upward, blossoming into an explosion of wood panels. Cazmia's nature golem clawed out of the ground, picking up sections of the tavern that became integrated into its anatomy: a wooden hide, shaggy bits of broken stone and glass forming crests and horns and claws, and tiny flames burning within its lantern eyes. Its size coupled with the low ceiling of the building and the explosive nature of its summoning caused its head to impact the ceiling almost immediately, tearing a hole in the roof.

"Let's get out of here!" Caz shouted to Soko, fumbling through the violence to collect her papers, the invincible box, and her meat rolls. Sections of tavern started falling, making everyone scatter. Erin caught a glimpse of the waitress disappearing through the back door. The golem lowered to its haunches and stared down the two men that had indirectly caused all of this. When it opened its mouth to reveal rows upon rows of glass teeth, they hesitantly made their way to the exit.

Patrons stampeded. Sections of the tavern collapsed. Erin's nature golem was sufficiently angered by the bartender that it charged. The outer wall exploded from the force, basically spelling the end for the building; it became nothing but a heap of rubble and a massive tavern-creature within a few more seconds.

Caz stared in horror at what they'd just done. Her golem trotted up to her, nuzzling its maw into her robes while it swished its rope tail proudly. She half-heartedly patted its nose.

"Um... get on!" She whistled for Vika and her horse to follow while she climbed onto the golem, using a divet in its wooden back like a saddle. Once Soko had either joined her or made the decision to fly instead, Caz dug her heels into the massive creature. It lurched its entire weight forward, pushing off into a hard loping stride. While at first it was slow -- the bartender, who had somehow made it out alive, and several angry patrons could even chase after it -- it picked up momentum, becaming fast enough to get out of the town extremely quickly. It left behind massive holes in the road with each step.

"Well, that was exciting!"

Cazmia flopped in front of the campfire. Nearby, her white horse paused its grazing to toss its owner an indignant glare. Vika, meanwhile, had fallen asleep with her head on Soko's lap. The nature golem was gone again, having dug a hole into the ground and disappeared once its summoner dismissed it.

"Meat roll?" she offered one of the now-cold treats to the shaman. After eating, she looked up at the stars. "I guess we'll start traveling to the island tomorrow whenever we wake up. In the meantime, know any scary stories?"

Soko found herself bolting from another tavern, following behind Cazmia. Did this little lady have a penchant for using her summoned critters? Soko scrabbled onto the back of the horse and clung to its rump and the edges of the saddle with all her might. Her eyes glanced around wildly as golems frolicked through the ruins of a respectable establishment.

"It was very...exciting." Soko replied. She cocked her head to the side as she said this. The shaman was unsure if the woman had been saved, but didn't want to bring up this niggling little detail with Cazmia. It would probably ruin the little creature's mood, and she worried about her zealousness at times. She snagged a meatroll and ate it carefully. It was quite delicious, but she realized she would need something more substantive.

"Travel sounds good. And no, I don't really know any scary stories. Living up north, we really didn't need em'. After Kailik got dragged into the deep by stepping on some thin ice. Or when Jia got butchered by a group of Kraido. I've got enough, ah, scary truths that I'd rather not repeat." Soko explained, pressing her thumbs together. Her bright yellow eyes stared deep into the fire.

Soko awoke in the morning sprawled out over a random rock, stomach down. She rose carelessly, her claws scratching off the rock and leading her to fall on the ground. Fwump.

"Ow." Soko murmured. She stumbled into their camp and quietly got together a breakfast of the random foodstuffs in her pack. A pile of dried fruit, a few pieces of bread, and a small chunk of cheese came together. She split the portions three ways, one for her, one for Cazmia, and a small one for Vika. The demoness ate thoughtfully, wondering where Caz would drag her today.

"Caz, time to wake up." Soko called out.

"Good morning!" Caz snapped from deep asleep to fully awake in a split-second. Not even bothering to smooth her highly tousled hair, she pulled it into a ponytail and put on her robes for the day. She accepted the gift of cheese gratefully and ingested it in a matter of bites. They broke camp, and the runic wizard loaded some of her possessions in bags on Vika's back. The big dog enjoyed having a job.

She stood in the middle of the barren plain, watching the grasses make waves in the wind. "Say goodbye to this boring grassland, Soko Nephi!" Cazmia slammed the butt of her staff into the ground. A dramatic wind rushed around them; her cape whipped in the wind like a dark blue flag. Purple runes etched themselves into the air above, forming needlessly complex networks of invocations and bindings.

With a tremendous scream, a colossal bird of prey broke through the sky and shattered the runes. Broken pieces of the formerly suspended magic wrapped around its body and locked it into the material plane. The roc crashed into the ground, hefting its massive weight toward them. It was mainly brown in color with black and white stripes on its wingtips. Cazmia's bindings were a dense layer of curving purple markings just barely hovering over its feathers.

"Hi!" the runic mage greeted it. It turned its massive head to her, staring with pitch black eyes, almost like it was expecting an order. "Sorry, nothing to kill right now. Can you give us a lift to the little islands north of Nalai?"

It took a few seconds for the great bird to process Cazmia's request, but eventually it turned, the earth shaking beneath each step. The roc lowered its wing into a ramp of sorts. "Yay! Let's go, Soko!" She clambered up the humongous wing, followed closely by Vika. It turned out that the bindings on its body were completely immaterial and one could easily pass through them without harm. The roc's feathers were remarkably soft; they'd probably be able to sleep on them in flight, assuming Soko didn't roll around in her sleep too much.

When they were all situated on the roc's back, Caz looked down. Her white horse glared indignantly up at her, personally insulted by her choice of transportation. "It's okay, horse! We're going to take you along too!" She climbed up the roc's neck and whispered into its ear.

The horse's eyes widened in fear.

Later, a small village reported a roc flying low over their rooftops, gently clasping a full-grown horse in one of its feet.

Not too long after Cazmia woke up, they broke camp andthe woman summoned a roc. The creature was simply massive, a bird that seemed like it shouldn't be able to fly even though it did so excellently. It was ordered to give them a lift to Nalai, and Soko quickly borded without a second thought. Cazmia was awfully excited about this, anyways.

Beneath them a horse dangled, but it didn't seem too distraught. A well trained warhorse could handle magic, so a roc probably didn't seem too out of its reach. Soko settled instead on tying down their sleeping bags to the bird, clambering all over the creature with a length of rope to secure them properly. She didn't roll in her sleep, but she also didn't want to risk a sudden wind current slapping into her wings and sending her into the sky. Soko snuggled into the sleeping bag and stared ahead.

It took a few days, but they were finally soaring over the Nalain archipelago. Beneath them were places of paradise, little spots of sand with a tuft of green in the middle. The roc eventually settled on one of the larger islands, marked with a jagged looking mountain and a full rich jungle. Even from their height they could see colorful reefs and flights of birds.

"Ah! A beautiful place." Soko squeaked. The bird landed safely, and Soko quickly dismantled her sleeping contraption that had eventually come to include a small dog bed. The demoness pointed into the jungle, towards a cliff at the edge of the mountain. At its foot lay a slightly raised and covered alcove.

"That's our campsite if I ever saw one." Winter declared. She trotted off, setting up a perfectly neat and ordered camp within the alcove. The northerner took a moment to rest after her work was done, sweat pouring off her.

"Oh Bear and Caribou, couldn't you have told your Shaman how hot it would get in the south?" Soko griped. She hunted around in her bags and pulled out the swimwear she had purchased in Taras, and began putting it on. Soko yanked on the bottoms as words drifted in from behind her.

"Hello there, travelers! You've come to Aerie, the island of feathers! I'm the shaman of Osprey and Parrot, Kitia." Came the voice. Soko turned slowly, folding her arms across her chest. A woman stood behind them with a wide smile, garbed only in feathers. In one hand she held a staff, and in the other a basket of fruit.

"H-h-hello, Shaman Kitia." Soko squeaked.

The roc slowly faded back into the plane from which it came. "I thought you would know how hot it would get, Soko," Caz shot back, her pointed ears drooping. "I mean, it's a tropical island. That's sort of the whole point." She rummaged through her bag and pressed a folded piece of blue cloth into her friend's chest. "It's a robe, so it'll be airier. And you'll get more used to the heat, too."

That was when Shaman Kitia arrived. Caz completely ignored any obvious similarities between the two shamans and, with her eyes focused intently on the skimpy feather bikini she was wearing, blurted out "Hey, can my friend Soko borrow your clothes?" It seemed to her like a reasonable question. "She's from the far north and we're on vacation."

Soko took the robe, and looked at her a little funny. This was much less airy than what she normally wore, it didn't even leave her midriff bare. She put her hand beneath the material and immediately gave Cazmia a funny look. The material was sheer, like ice with air bubbles.

"Of course! She will soon be clad in the love of Osprey," Kitia declared. The other Shaman darted into the woods, leaving Soko to glare at Caz.

"I don't think I should wear something so, uh, feather-y. It might insult Sister Taiga Eagle." Soko explained. Minutes later Kitia reappeared with a set of feathered garb and forcibly dressed a struggling Thousand Night Winter. Soko stood stock still as she looked over her new clothing. It was not only useless for support, but barely there. She was cooler, certainly, but it had come at the cost of her dignity. Her tail lay motionless and her pointed ears drooped.

"I guess it looks fine." Soko murmured. Kitia looked overjoyed.

"Good! Excellent! As a guest of the Aerie, why don't you come to dinner tonight! We shall sing the praises of Osprey and Parrot until dawn! Dance with Tern and Spotted Crake!" Kitia announced. She dropped the basket of fruit beside them and hurried off once more. Soko glanced to Cazmia, wondering what her response would be. She had a guess, considering how the mage was eying here.

The mage's face was stuck in a pie-eating grin. She wrapped her arm around Soko's shoulder. "Oh, just be a good sport, will you? These natives' religion is so adorable! They only worship mundane birds as gods! And they wear skimpy feather outfits." While Caz had never realized this of herself, she did point it out in Kitia and presumably the rest of the Aerians. "And they speak almost solely in exclamations. It's just precious, you know?"

She turned to Shaman Kitia. "We'd love to go to the dinner." Cazmia had a scholarly interest in their diet, definitely. Either they were forbidden from eating bird of any kind -- a shame, as Caz loved chicken -- or that was all they ate, like it was some sacred gift. Erin wasn't an anthropologist by trade, but one of her roommates was and she took a few classes on the subject back at the University. Remote tribes like these were fundamentally fascinating.

On the walk there, Caz bombarded Kitia with questions. "So, are there any dangerous beasts we should watch out for? Any good beaches? Is there anywhere in particular for us to stay or are we going to have to sleep under a mosquito net out in the rain? Why do you worship birds, exactly? Do you ever wish you could fly because all of your gods can?"
