Do you regret ignoring my warnings yet, Rinrae? Shut up, shut up, shut up! The girl hurtled through the thin path, her blonde hair streaming behind her. Bare feet splashed on the soggy ground, the mud and loam tugging at her toes with every hurried step she took. Hauntwood March was definitely not the construct's favorite place to visit in Imythess. The trees surrounding her were twisted as if they had been tortured, their bare branches reaching towards the sky in apparent agony. Moss covered every visible surface, sheets of the thick flora dangling from most of the boughs overhead. There were very few safe paths through the marsh, the majority of the area covered in scummy bogs and deep pits of sinking sand. It was a dangerous place, and she would have never chosen to visit the supposedly haunted area of the Norwood Forest. However, Rin was not entirely in control of her journeys across Imythess. She was an artificial construct of a sentient book known as the Grand Grimoire, created and designed in order to search for its missing pages. These fragments were incredibly dangerous objects, allowing the ones who held them to bend and warp reality. She had been successful in regaining several of the powerful pages, but a multitude still existed in Imythess, and she could never truly be at rest until they were all collected. This had spurned her journey to this forsaken corner of the land, but her efforts to recover the current page had been beset by obstacles from the very beginning. She had almost lost her life in a hidden sinkhole the first day upon entering the marsh, and the next night she had been forced to defend herself from a pack of lizards the size of hounds. And now she was being chased by swamp monsters. The girl careened around a sharp corner, her leaving a thick furrow in the layer of mud, grass, and leaves under her feet. Only twenty feet behind her was a swarm of odd monsters, their eyes glowing with a sickly green illumination. They were no bigger than the girl's hand and seemed to be composed of thick roots. Their bodies were simply a twisted knot of wood, with long, thin arms and legs that ended in tiny claws. The golems cried out as they chased the intruder, tiny gaping maws making noises that would be adorable if they weren't attempting to end her existence. She gritted her teeth as she ran, mentally cursing the golems, the Grimoire, the pages, the marsh, the land of Imythess and everyone who inhabited it in a stream of internal expletives. She heard the Grimoire's voice sound inside her head, chastising the girl once more for her dangerous curiosity with a superior tone. I warned you that Root Golems were incredibly territorial, Rinrae. “SHUT UP!” The girl's shout echoed throughout the marsh, startling several birds so they winged away from their nests. She continued to flee from the pack of root golems, her head and heart punding from the adrenaline. |

Everto was slogging through the marsh, he hated this place, to much water not enough dry land. He kept on moving, his short stature made it heard to get through the place, he wanted to just start using fire to dry himself off, though that would be a gross misuse of his powers... also it would probably burn his clothes. He sighed, looking around, he saw a large patch of land above the swamp, he swiftly ran to it, getting up onto the dry bank, he would rest here for a while. He was about to sit down when he saw a young girl run by, yelling 'Shut up' he gave her an odd look and called out, "What are you talking about! Nothings yelling at you!" He looked at where she was running from. Root Golems were rushing after her, he chuckled, really, root golems. He took a few steps back, calling his magic to his fingers, he felt the mystic energy burn and grow. In a few seconds he held an orb of flames, he smirked, shooting it into the mass of root golems just as they last one arrived on the dry bank. He felt the blast of hot air and steam rise from the surrounding water, the root golems were mostly ash now. The few that were left ran away, Everto laughed loudly, whooping with excitement, he had defeated his enemies with only one spell, he was getting closer to perfecting his fireball. He didn't turn to see if the girl was still running, he say back down on the bank, chuckling to himself, what a weak person to run away from some lousy root elementals. He laid back, a large tree was sticking out of the bank, allowing him to relax, he'd start moving later on, for now he needed to rest. |

The girl started as she heard a retort to her yell, craning her neck to one side. There was a small boy standing in the center of the bog, looking hilariously miserable. He was submerged up to his chesst in the murky water, arms extended above the surface. She managed to catch a glimpse of white hair and ruby eyes before her inattention had consequences, one thin foot catching on a protruding root. With a shout of surprise Rin tumbled to the ground, curling up into a ball with her arms wrapped around her neck. She rolled over the rough ground for a few moments before slamming into a thick tree trunk with enough force to make her cry out, the air leaving her lungs. There was a bright flash from behind her and a muted explosion, but maintaining consciousness took all of her attention at the moment. She shook her head, trying to regain her senses before the crowd of root golems converged on her prone figure. However, she did not feel the prickle of their tiny claws on her bare legs, and realized that the situation had drastically changed during her short period of obliviousness. Rin stared in open-jawed shock at the sight before her. There was a smoking crater on the path where she had been fleeing, the scorched eatch surrounded with root golems in various states of injury. Several had been reduced to piles of ash, but the majority of the afflicted beasts had merely lost a limb or two to the spell. The maimed creatures were frantically digging into the thick earth, sending up showers of dirt and stones as they burrowed underneath the surface. Soon there were simply numerous pounds of dirt to indicate where the golems had hidden, hibernating until their wounds had recuperating. She could only see two golems that were still moving around, chattering to each other in their strange, high-pitched yips. The girl stood shakily, holding one hand out in front of her. The fingers curled as if she held the grip of a weapon, although there was nothing in her grasp. Her eyes took on a distant, glazed appearance as she called on the power of the Grimoire, summoning one of the weapons in her arsenal. “Carnwennan.” In a flash she held a small dagger with a hilt carved out of white bone, the two-edged blade black and featureless. A long length of dark leather trailed from its pommel. She waved the weapon at the remaining golems, hissing in a threatening manner. The remaining creatures growled at the girl before retreating quickly, disappearing into the depths of the marsh. The golems taken care of for now, Rin turned to her savior. He seemed to be a very young to be on his own in such a dangerous area, yet he had cast a powerful enough spell to incinerate the majority of the swarm following her. “Thank you for rescuing me!” She pointedly gestured to his submerged body, a small smile returning to her lips. “Do you need help getting out of the water. Are your feet stuck?” |

He didn't expect to see the girl come back, let alone thank him, he smiled but shook his head, climbing out of the water onto solid ground, he had been using that tree to help him stand, though now he just wanted to relax. He stood on the ground and looked up at her, "I don't really need help, though I couldn't really say the same for you, running from a few root elementals... they can't even hurt you if you wear thick pants, then again you're wearing a sundress. In a swamp, don't you have any common sense?" He pushed up on his glasses, they were slipping slightly, he kicked off his boots, dumping sludge out of them before putting them back on. He put his hand on the tree, "Little girls shouldn't be running around with daggers in the swamp, go back home before you get yourself hurt. Oh, and don't worry about those little root golems, they'll need at least twenty four hours to recuperate from my assault, after all, fire magic is the strongest magic." He looked at the blacked area with a smile on his face, it was a testament to his power and skill, he was sure this would become a familiar sight soon enough. |

Rin place her free hand on her hip, frowning at the boy. He might be young, but he was also incredibly cocky. “First of all, I like my dress. It is pretty." She spun to illustrate her point, the garment billowing around her legs from the movement. It was a simple garment, given to her by one of her closest companions on Imythess. “They might not be able to get through thick pants, but what if they climbed inside your pants? Then you would have to light yourself on fire to get rid of them!” She watched the boy warily. He might of saved her from her pursuers, but it was apparently not done because he cared about her well-being. In fact, he seemed to view her as nothing more than a nuisance. He was making quite a spectacle of himself, trying to sound so arrogant and all-knowing while the water pooled underneath his feet, mud and grime caking his white pants from the filthy water. “Secondly, you do not seem to have much sense either if you were walking through the bog instead of on dry land. Were you lost?” She marched up to the boy, staring down at him with an annoyed glare. “You don't seem to be much better off than I am in this swamp, mister! What gives you the right to berate me?” She held the dagger to one side, keeping the conjured weapon handy in case the snarky little boy proved to be dangerous to her as well. He was clearly more powerful than he appeared, but something in his casual indifference suggested he still possessed the maturity levels of a child. Careful, Rinrae... Do not press him too much. If he could burn away those golems, he could likely do the same thing to you... She crossed her arms over her chest, ignoring the Grimoire's warning. Her diminutive height still towered over the child, almost two full feet taller than the spellcaster.“Third, don't call me little girl. My name is Rin. Plus, you are the short one here. How old are you? Eight? Nine?” She shook her head reproachfully, her voice taking on a scolding tone. “I can take care of myself, I just did not want to hurt the golems for just defending their home.” And that was her biggest issue with the boy. He had simply torched the root golems without a second thought, incinerating the creatures as if they were nothing. The two of them were technically the intruders here, not the creatures of the swamp. Although she had disturbed their rest, Rin had hoped to merely outrun the miniature golems so that she could continue her search without being molested. She had never intended to hurt the beings. “Did you have to kill them? Couldn't you have used your fireball to just scare them away?” His audacious lack of respect for life was almost repulsive to the girl, reminding her of the Red lily Man. |

All he could do was grind his teeth, fine he was short, though he probably lived over a hundred years younger then her, "Don't judge me for my size, Rin, I am Everto Parvulus, I'm one hundred and fifty eight years old, I've had to deal with people talking down to me for over a hundred and fifty years, just because I look. Like. A kid!" Flames burst around his form, drying off his clothes and burning away the muck, the flames turning to smoke just as quickly as it had come. "As for why I killed them it's because they were chasing a running girl who instead of just punting them, decided to run, allowing them to sense fear and give chase, if you give them an inch they'll take a mile, I killed a few of them and let the rest burrow or run away, I could have just summoned my golem and told it to make root snacks out of them all! Also, probably like you, I'm lost in this blasted swamp, all because I'm looking for some stupid legend that I heard a rumor about which might be able to end this blasted curse I have on my family, do you get it now, I can't let anything stop me from ending this curse on me, my father, and our family's children to come!" He just wanted to summon his flames, melt her for being so condescending to him just because he looked like a kid. |

Rin stepped back quickly as flames burst from the small figure, wreathing his limbs like a second skin. She raised the dagger quickly, holding the grip in a reversed position so the edge ran parallel to her forearm. Her eyes widened as the boy shouted out that he was actually over a century old. She took another hasty step backwards as all of the moisture evaporated from his skin, disappearing in a puff of sizzling steam. “I... I am sorry, I... I had no idea-” She barely had time to apologize before he launched into another rambling tirade, explaining his motivations. His red eyes glared at her from behind the odd spectacles, a combination of anger and annoyance reflected in his ruby pupils. She felt her entire body cold as he revealed his motivation for being in the Hauntwood Marsh: he was hunting an artifact of faw power to quell a curse that afflicted his family. The goal of his quest sounded eerily similar to her own desire: a page of the Grand Grimoire. She tightened her grip on the dagger, processing this new information. Everto was clearly not in his right mind; despite his claimed age, the childish figure could clearly harness potent arcane spells. If he truly sought to remove the page from the marsh, she ought to end the threat he posed right now. Everto was not fond of her either; she sensed a dangerous hostility in his stance, as if his train of thinking paralleled her own. She tensed, preparing to pounce at the boy before the Grimoire interrupted. Rinrae, this is an expansive swamp. It is very possible that he could be searching for something else in these bogs. What if it is your page? What then? At that time, I trust you will take whatever actions are necessary to ensure its recovery. Until then... See if you can enlist his assistance. Mentally sticking her tongue out at the sentient tome, she loosened her fingers on the hilt, lowering the blade. “I am truly sorry, Everto. My name is Rin, and I am also seeking something in this blasted marsh.” She did not reverse the conjuring of the small blade, still unsure how he would react to her next words. “These woods are clearly dangerous to traverse on our own... Perhaps we should work together and see what we can accomplish. I am searching for something too... A person, actually.” The lies tasted like ash in her mouth, but she knew the Grimoire encouragement was probably accurate. If the diminutive man could be trusted, his powers would prove incredibly useful in the swamp. If he did not agree to the tentative alliance, she knew he would have to be eliminated for the sake of the Grimoire. The thought caused her stomach to turn; she had never killed someone in cold blood, but Everto was too dangerous to let him roam in the bog if his goal was the same as her own. |

He realized he was scaring her, he mental slapped himself, rubbing his temples as he calmed down, "I'm sorry I scared you... and yes, it would be for the best that we travel together, I'm not usually like this, but this stupid swamp has just been one giant headache... you know what I mean right?" Of course she did, she was just as annoyed as him at this place. He offered his hand, "Lets start over again... I'm Everto, Half-demon fire mage, I'm currently looking for a magic chalice that is supposed to be the catalyst for part of a ritual I need to do to gain my true form... what are you looking for?" He had calmed down quite a bit, he needed to be kind and calm, he saw how the girl had that knife, she was a trained killer, not as skilled as a certain little girl he met, though probably better then him. He wondered though, what was she looking for, "What are you looking for anyway... I doubt it'd be the chalice, it's only property is the fact that it can keep any and all liquids fresh that are put in it." Of course the enchantment was greater then that, it also stopped the liquid from being corrupted, spilled, or drunk until the owner said otherwise, to many enchantments for a normal cup, though more then enough for the fabled chalice he was looking for. |

The strange boy visibly forced himself to calm down, soothing rubbing his temples and apologizing. She smiled at him, although the friendliness of the action did not reach her bright blue eyes. "It's fine, Everto. I understand. This endless swamp can be incredibly frustrating. And your assistance was very useful in an undesirable situation." She twirled the dagger absentmindedly as she spoke, completely at ease with wielding the weapon. Rin's arsenal came from the annals of a dozen legends and myths; her current blade had once belonged to a kind known as Arthur who ruled a tiny, quaint kingdom on a distant world. Its blade was incapable of reflecting light, and at command could cloak the wielder in shadows in order to hide them from their enemies. It was a very powerful artifact, and she knew it would probably be required to earn back the Grimoire's page. Her eyes widened slightly when this small child announced he was a tiefling, demon blood coursing through his veins. it would explain his longevity, as well as his quick temper and affinity for fire. this is a dangerous ally you have found for me... The Grimoire did not respond to her chastisement, and she sighed in a weary fashion that seemed incongruous with her teenage appearance. "Like I said, I'm looking for a person. I believe he is a shaman who lives in these woods. He has taken an... item of great importance from me. He apparently collects many rare and ancient artifacts, and has been known to acquire them through illicit methods." She pursed her lips, staring off into the distance. She had neglected to mention that she sought a page specifically, but hopefully Everto would not notice the misdirection. "Of course, he's proven almost impossible to find in this infernal marsh." With a flash of revelation she turned to the tiefling once more, a true grin crossing her sculpted features. "Wait! He collects magical items too! He could possibly have your chalice!" Rin beamed at the boy, her hesitation from mere moments earlier fading. If this boy truly was searching for some enchanted chalice, the fragment of the Grimoire was probably safe. "You should help me locate his hut! He has to have somewhere to rest and eat... It would be the perfect place for an ambush!" The words sounded oddly foreign coming from such an innocent-looking waif, but there was a fierce determination in her face that could not be stopped. |

He smirked, a shaman eh? He'd no doubt have magical tomes that he could use for his own magical experimentation. At the thought of him collecting magical items, the chalice could easily be there, this was perfect, "That would explain why it is out here of all places, I like the way you think Rin, once we find this shaman we can get your item and my own, plus he might let me look at his magic scrolls and tomes, maybe even jot down a few passages from one for later studies." His mood completely changed around magic, he loved the subject, he had spent more then one hundred years studying it. He thought about possible places to live, it'd have to be a large piece of dry land in this swamp, natural defenses to would be preferred, he knew there was nothing from where he had been. A single thought came to mind, the root golems, not a good defense, though most people would walk around them just because they were a nuisance, he smirked, "You were on the right track before I believe, he might have been using the root golems as a natural defense, not a strong one, though it'd stop most people from entering because of how annoying they are and deadly in large numbers, if you can show me the way there I can do something to keep them away from us without killing them." Of course he had a way to stop them, it didn't matter how many they were, smaller enemies always were always cowed by an overwhelming force, his glass golem would come in handy indeed. |

The girl watched as the tiefling's face lit up, a cocky smile creeping across his face. Her information had apparently been extremely interesting to the small figure, and he immediately began suggesting ideas for accosting the shaman. She chuckled softly, holding her open hand up in the universal sign for 'slow down.' "Woah, wait a minute! We have to find out where the shaman lives before we can start borrowing tomes from his collection. I have heard he is a hermit who hoards his knowledge... we might have to retrieve our items by force." Of this fact, the girl had no doubt. The pages of the Grimoire were incredibly potent focuses for magic-users, but they were not without risks. Individuals who were utilized the page's powers for a prolonged period of time developed an addiction of sorts, thriving on its essence. The symptoms of this addiction varied widely from person to person, although they usually afflicted the user's mind. The Red lily Man's schizophrenia had simply become more prominent, while the Prophet of the Truth in Taras had believed himself to be a new deity in the land. She had no idea how the page would influence a hermit with shamanic powers, but paranoia towards strangers was the most likely alteration. The girl listened to Everto's guess that the shaman had actually summoned the root golems to protect his abode. The thought had never crossed her mind. she had simply assumed the golems were indigenous to the Hauntwood Marsh. She bit her bottom lip, worrying the skin with her teeth before answering. "It is true that such a large number of such creatures is a rare sight... You might be on to something there, Everto. We can start our search for the shaman's home there, if nothing else." The girl began to lead the smaller half-demon through the swamp, retracing the path of her frantic flight from the gaggle of golems. They reached the clearing within half an hour, stopping to survey the path of dry land. Twisted trees encircled the thick underbrush. There were bare patches of earth where the root golems had torn themselves from the land before chasing the girl. She tentatively stepped into the clearing, bright eyes searching for any additional swamp creatures. "It was here... She kicked one of the piles of overturned earth, shaking her head. "You are right, they were incredibly annoying, but I never would have guessed that they were actually sentries for the shaman..." A sudden bubbling from the nearby water distracted the girl. She stared at the bog's surface suspiciously, bring her dagger to bear. A thick form began to rise from the swamp, its heavy feet sinking into the soft loam of the dry land. She stared at the creature nervously. It was at least eight feet tall, carved entirely from stone. Its eyes were embedded emeralds, and they slowed with the same sickly light that had inhabited the root golem's eyes. "You know... I think you were right. This does seem like the work of a shaman." The rock golem opened its mouth, releasing a roar as thunderous avalanche. |

He looked at the beast, no fear entered his eyes, though he swiftly bit his thumb, allowing several droplets of blood to hit the ground, the blood moved to form a magic circle, his smirk couldn't get any bigger as green flames covered his hands, slamming it down into the circle. His own golem would fight it, the glass golem quickly rises from the ground, its blade like hands scything the air infront of it. Everto began to walk off deeper into the area, "Come on Rin, Glaiser can handle himself." The glass golem seemed to turn at the sound of his name, a single glass thumb poking up out of it's blade like hands, it turned to fight the the other golem, the fight would be a long one. Everto turned his head, he couldn't even leave a freaking summon alone, it was his friend and he would hate to lose Glaiser. He quickly used his distance to circle around the golem, conjuring a second fireball into his hands, letting it launch forward, impacting it's back, a roar of anguish answered his attack, allowing Glaiser to cut deeply into it. He smirked, letting out a short salvo of magic missiles, Glaiser would make it so the golem couldn't make it to them, it was the perfect strategy. |

The girl backed away from the towering golem as Everto pit into his thumb, sprinkling his own blood on the round. An arcane symbol formed on the earth underneath the tiefling, illuminated his thin frame with a fierce emerald glow. Green flames burst from the ground, swirling into a column of fire. It slowly coalesced into the form of a humanoid figure, just as intimidating as the golem that had emerged from the swamp. Rin watched in horrified fascination as the two titans clashes, glass and stone fists slamming into each others bodies with resounding crashes. Everto told Rin it was safe to retreat, but she remained frozen, watching the two golems mercilessly beat at each other. Although the glass' golems blade-linger fingers were capable of slashing its opponents thick skin, every blow from the stone golem would cause fractured shards of glass to spiral away from its body, decreasing Glaiser's size. Now, mere moments after the battle had commenced, the glass golem had already decreased in size noticeably, although it maintained its furious assault against its stony cousin. Everto skirted around the edge of the battlefield, adding his own arcane might to the fray. A fireball crashed into the stone golems back, heating its rocky skin until it glowed red hot. The beast roared, neck scraping as it turned to glare at the small, bothersome figure. Ignoring the slashes of its glass counterpart, the rock golem bent down, sinking its thick fingers into the earth. With a low rumble it tore a huge chunk of earth from the ground, lifting the tangled mass for soil and roots as if it weighed nothing. The golem hurled the makeshift rocket at the boy before returning its attention to Glaiser, stony fists pounding the summon relentlessly. Rin bit her lip, unsure of how to be useful in the current battle, when she noticed movement in the bushes behind Everto. The girl cried out and lunged past the tiefling as a root golem leaped from the underbrush, sharp claws hooking around the blade of the dagger. She continued her forward momentum, slamming the tiny creature's frame against a thick tree trunk. It squirmed desperately, attempting to rake her hand with its needle-like claws, but she merely grin and applied more pressure to the blade, effectively shearing the tiny golem in half. She stepped back as four more root golems appeared from the bushes, yipping at the girl in their untranslatable yipping. "You two take care of that golem... I can guard your backs." She spun towards the gaggle of golems, dark blade flashing around her body in an elaborate path. Edited by Rin, Sun Jul 10, 2011 6:52 am.

He smirked as he soil and rocks were tossed at him, he easily dodged out of their way, ending up next to a bush. He was already preparing another spell, just as he saw Rin fly past him, cutting a root golem in half, he nodded, "Alright, guard me well Rin, I'm going to let you see the full arcane might of Everto Parvulus!" He summoned forth his strength, sending another fireball into it's back, just as it was turning to pick up more chunks of earth, he summoned the green flames to his hand, making like he was trying to grip the golem. Instead of the golem moving, it simply caught on fire, green flames licking at it's frame, he could see it rear up as he tried to douse itself off, making for the water. Everto couldn't let that happen, he used his smaller form to maneuver around the swamp's dry ground easily, shouting a command to Glaiser to stall him, which he did simply by sending his arm straight through it's weakened back. It roared again, Everto laughed as he launched a magic missile directly into the glass arm, forcing it deeper into it. It's roar was ghastly, though it had given him enough time to get in front of it, he summoned forth, using his last bit of mana, "With my last spell, I smite thee oh foul being of tainted earth." He lobbed the fireball at it's feet, the explosion forcing it to fall down. He smirked as he breathed heavily, walking towards Glaiser, just as the glass golem swung its arm down, beheading the earthen golem, though now his magical arsenal was spent and he was tired, he dismissed Glaiser, allowing him to go home to regenerate his loss of limb and glass pieces. He turned to Rin, motioning for her to lead the way. |

Rin heard the boy yell out something about 'full arcane might' from behind her, but she was too focused on the root golems to fully process the information. The small swamp creatures attacked her simultaneously, two sprinting towards her feet while a third pounced straight for her face. She brought the dagger up quickly, spearing the latter golem through its core before its scrambling claws could reach her face. The tiny monster hissed and continued to work its limbs, desperately attempting to reach the girl with its sharp fingers. She dispassionately reached out and grabbed its thin limbs, snapping its arms as if they were nothing more than twigs. She felt a pinprick of pain as she threw the maimed golem aside, leaping back from the pair of monsters that had reached her feet. Their piercing claws had managed to score a few puncture wounds on her bare feet, although the injuries were only superficial. They yipped and rushed forward again, trying to divide her attention between them. The girl let the dagger's hilt slip from her fingers, instead gripping the end of the long leather cord attached to its pommel. She spun the dagger like a flail, its sharp edge whistling as it cut through the air in a perfect circle. She brought her arm forward with a fierce smile, the dagger as deadly and effective as a saw. It easily cleaved through the bodies of the two remaining root golems, shearing them into two pieces. The creatures mewed piteously, weakly burrowing into the earth in order to regenerate from the grievous injuries. The girl returned the dagger to a more typical grip, grinning slightly. The three root golems had barely even provided a challenge. Wait... Three golems? Hadn't there been four? A rustle from above the girl was the only warning she had. She fell backwards, narrowly avoiding the root golem raking her face with its sharp claws. It latched onto her hair instead, screeching in her face. She slashed the dagger up swiftly, the tip of the blade luckily catching the golem's flailing leg. She pried the golem away from her face as one thin claw caught her brow, scraping a thin cut across her skin. She threw the creature to the ground and slammed her foot onto its thin body, splintering its wooden frame. She continued to slam her bare heel down on the golem's body until it began to cry pathetically, arms and legs shattered. Rin stepped away from the being, tenderly touching the scratch on her cheek. It would heal within hours, as would the punctures in her feet, but had still been far too close to her left eye for comfort. Rin turned back to Everto, her dagger's blade sticky with the sap that served the root golems as blood. He had defeated his opponent as well, and Glaiser was just now returning to its natural plane of existence. "I have to be honest... I have no idea where to go next. He must be somewhere nearby to control these creatures. Can you sense any magic in the vicinity?" |
