| Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit. Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own. In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins. There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free. Create a character now! If you're already a member, you can log into your account below: |

Vyse was once more putting on a show in the oasis, people loved sword dancing here, it should discipline, determination, and skill of the swordsman. His blades moved faster and faster as he worked them, spinning, slashing, stabbing, parrying he did it all with extreme speed and precision, just as he felt the ending coming near, he shouted out for the crowd to hear, "Blitz. Sopheur." His blades changed, the cutlass gained bolts of lightning dancing around the blades as the longsword started to rapidly fade from being corporeal and incorporeal. He smiled at the looks of admiration from the crowd, he'd probably make enough money to eat tonight, he didn't worry about feeding Umbriel, when he told the guy he would need food for her, the man said he'd take it out of his pay, she was well fed and resting where he would sleep that night. He ended his sword dance with a quick flourish of his blades, the cutlass slashing at neck height and the trust going through the heart of an invisible foe, the crowd clapped and threw coins into a small hat he had worn on his way here to keep the sun off his face. He gave a short laugh as he saw some kids brand tiny wooden weapons, trying to imitate his dual wielding style, it'd be a while before they became great swordsmen. He pocketed the gold, walking over to his employer's wagon, Umbriel was breathing heavily, she wasn't used to the desert heat. "Hey, Qadaj, let me take a blanket and make some shade for Umbriel, she's getting hot under the collar... also could you send some water over for her, that'd be great." A small fat merchant smiled and nodded, tossing him a large blanket as he yelled at some poor servant to go fill up a tub of water for the thirsty kitty. Vyse smiled as he used the nearby caravan and some metal weights to keep the edges in place, it was rough, but it provided the much needed shade for Umbriel, he stroked her head slowly, the weather made her to sleepy. He sighed, he'd be stuck here for another three days before he went back across the desert. |

Ezekial looked around the Oasis town. He had received a number of strange looks about his dress, his jōe, and not a few questions on whether he was hot in it. To that, he replied that it was remarkably cool, as it was designed to be able to be worn in the muggy and hot summers where it was created. He enjoyed walking the streets, his lantern swinging, although the snickers that erupted everywhere he walked past soiled the experience somewhat. This time there was a loud commotion at one end of the small town, not a true town, but more of a "tent town" that shifted constantly, with an influx of new and an outflux of old. Curious, the old man walked towards the cheering voices, and saw a man putting on a blade show, being a very good blade-dancer. Ezekial stood in the crowd with the same smile on his face, and smiling at the small children attempting to emulate this swordsman and showman. When the show was finished, and the crowd began to disperse to take up their usual work, Ezekial stayed to speak with the man. Ezekial stood, smiling, while the man took the gold he earned and moving to a nearby caravan. Ezekial was surprised to see a large tiger, certainly a dire tiger, laying, panting in the dry heat. The man said something to another, assuredly to help the dire tiger, and the other man got his workers to putting up some form of shade for the tiger, and saw another man take a tub to fill it with water. The man bent to the tiger, and began talking to it, surely words of comfort and Ezekial decided to approach him then. Ezekial stood before him and the tiger, and said, "Hello, blade-dancer. I can see that you are very good at your craft. Why are you here, in this little oasis town, when you could be in an army, or fighting in the Great Northerns? My name is Ezekial, by the by, Ezekial Smith. What is yours?" Ezekial foregoed the entire bowing greeting in favor of offering his hand for a handshake. This was an odd old elf, dressed in strange garb which was dirty and had a thin layer of fine grits of sand, similar to loess. He had wished to clean it, but had not been able to do so in quite a long time. |

Looked up at the strange old elf, he smiled and shook his hand, "I'm Vyse Noclan, as for why I'm not in any kind of army I prefer to not fight for money, I'll moonlight as a bodyguard sometimes, but I prefer doing good deeds for the reason that it's the right thing to do, accepting money for something like that just puts a bad taste in my mouth. Oh, also this is Umbriel, she's a bit big for a dire tigress, but she's just a tame cat right now. You can pet her if you like." Vyse nodded to the old elf, he was a strange character, though not just from his clothes, he held an odd lantern. Vyse looked at his own clothes, in this land he to was thought of as weird, he wore a sleeveless white vest along with a long red coat, he had just recently gotten his pant's re-sown together, making it look like a crisscrossing of stitches, not to mention his old leather boots. He watched the tub be placed near Umbriel's head, she slowly stood up to start drinking, purring softly for a large cat, Vyse smirked, she was a house cat when there wasn't a fight to be had, "Usually dire tigers have to be trained from birth to follow someone's orders, I found her wild, after a few crazy days she decided to follow me, she's been my partner since. You won't find a better pet, partner, friend, or mount then Umbriel." He scratched her ears, turning once more to Ezekial, "Well Ezekial, you mind if I call you Zeke?" Ezekial gripped Vyse's hand in a vice-like grip for a second, and released it after shaking it briskly. "Hello, Vyse. I suppose that's reasonable. You are an honorable man, I can see. I would appreciate that, thank you." Ezekial kneeled and began to pet Umbriel's head gently, smiling at her. He took the chance to inspect her master, a Raggedy Man character. His pants were re-sown, with a patchwork of stitching. He wore a long red coat open down the front with a white vest underneath. Ezekial continued to kneel as the worker placed the tub of water near him, and stood up as Umbriel did so as well. He listened to Vyse's explanation of her history with somewhat less-than-rapt attention, and turned back to Vyse when he asked him about a nickname. Ezekial gave a strange one-sided smile, and replied, "You can call me 'Paul' for all the difference it makes. On a more serious note, no, I don't mind." Ezekial was suddenly serious. He said, "I don't want to alarm you, but something is coming to this place. Something old, older than anything I've ever heard of, and filled with pain, so much pain. I can't stop it, I doubt anything could, but I can feel it coming. We need to get away from this oasis. But what do I know, I'm just an old man who can see the kami." Ezekial put a hand to his temple and groaned. When he took his hand away, he was smiling. "You probably can't hear it, but I can, all the time, and it starting to get to me. Oh, that's right, I've forgotten. You probably don't know about the kami, do you? I do apologize, I just assume that everyone knows about it. Don't worry too much about it, I'm sure that your death will be quick and painless, mostly. It's the same for all of them, standing in the calm of the storm." For a second, the old man seemed very old, he lost his posture, and his shoulders slouched, dark bags forming under his eyes. He was deathly tired, he had been trying to solve the problem, if there truly existed a problem, and not something he was imagining from sleep-deficiency. No, it couldn't be false, it was so real, the pained kami he felt couldn't be imagined, could it? ((OOC: Note that he's starting to go a little crazy, he'll get better. For now.)) |

Vyse immediately switched to a much more serious tone, "Kami are spirits, right? You're saying some kind of evil spirit is coming here to kill all of these people. I have some questions for you Zeke." Vyse quickly racked his brains for questions, he needed a way to find out where this kami was coming from, head it off at the pass so Qadaj could evacuate the people here, it'd be faster to get to Istan City instead of heading back across the desert. Though first he'd need to gather more information about this wandering kami. "Alright, please explain slowly Zeke, what direction is this kami coming from, is it possible for you to track it, and most importantly is it a physical entity or an incorporeal one?" Those were just starters to the questions, he'll have more once details start being filled in, but first it was important to know if they could track, what it was, and where it was coming from. Vyse felt the need for haste, though from the look of his new friend he might be wrong... though it was better to be safe then sorry. He motioned for Qadaj, his his employer to come over, he'd want to hear of this to. The pudgy merchant walks over, smiling at Vyse, "What do you need my friend? Does Umbriel need some food or perhaps it is to help your new friend here?" Qadaj was overly friendly, helping out anyone despite the lack of monetary gains, it was only from his reliable buyers did he actually gain a profit and his company grows larger. Vyse quickly retold all of what Zeke had told him before, the kami and the death of all the people, Qadaj's eyes bulged a bit, "A great spirit is coming here?! This is bad indeed... though from what you say, Zeke might be wrong, I will need to listen here before making my decision, would you care to elaborate more, Zeke?" Qadaj sits down slowly on the back of his caravan, his every thought consumed with how to deal with the kami if it was coming. |

Ezekial laughed, and shook his head. "No, no. Kami represent the spirits of all things, but having a kami is not the same as being a spirit. After all, we both have kami, yet we are not spirits. And the thing that is coming is not evil, and it is inaccurate to say that it is coming here to kill all of these people. A more accurate statement would be that it is coming here, and as a result it will kill all of these people. It is similar, in fact, to how when you walk through a forest you kill numerous insects with every step. Does that mean that you came to the forest to stomp on ants? No, of course not, that was just a coincidental outcome. So too are the deaths of these people when the thing comes. I doubt it even realizes that we exist. It is coming from below and to the west, and I can track it to some degree. At this time, I cannot hazard a guess as to whether it is physical or incorporeal. It's kami is too alien to me." He frowned, and said quietly, "The Elders would know. This is why I was sent, to learn the frequency of everything." He looked up to see the other man that Vyse was talking to, apparently named Qadaj, and repeated what he had said to Vyse, adding that activating his ability to track the thing would essentially incapacitate him. He continued, saying "It's not moving as fast as it was before, and it's still very deep down. It will take it quite a while, a little more than a day, before it reaches the surface. I'm still not sure what it wants, though. It might even be sentient. I just don't know as of yet." He raised his hand to his temple again, the screams were starting up. That sound pierced his ears every time he heard it, filled with pain, confusion, and rage at an unknown entity. After a few long moments, the screams ebbed away and he took his hand away from his temple. He looked up, and said, "I can hear it, leaking from the place where I can see the kami. It's a terrible thing, something that I would not wish on my worst enemy. Do you know see the problem? All of this is just speculation based on the sense of a being that I've never known about before this. It's a bad situation, no matter how you look at it." He stood, and looked around at the desert all around them. He was deathly tired, and desperately wanted to sleep, but knew that he could not, at least, not here, not now. All around him the air shimmered in the heat, but he made the attempt as well as he could to put up a strong front. |

Qadaj nodded his head, "This is not something that I can get a full scale evacuation on... I can ask everyone and spread the word of the possible danger, but only those that believe me will leave, I can't force the others. If I had proof I could easily sway them, if you get any kind of proof, find me here, until then I'll go talk to my friends and allies." Qadaj quickly strolled away, leaving a day early to make sure he was alive was his second priority, right after informing everyone in the camp. Vyse nodded his head, he needed to either stay and fight, or run and definitely live... it was obvious he had to stay, he needed to defend those that were still here. His eyebrows raised, he could hear it leaking from somewhere, that was where he needed to start, "You said you could hear it leaking from somewhere, do you know where exactly... if it leads to certain land marks we might be able to guess what it is or how it was formed." He nodded his head, it was a sound enough plan, better then nothing. He was already readying himself, grabbing a pack and a large flask of water, either way he was going to end up wandering, might as well be towards the beast and figuring out how to stop it. |

Ezekial nodded to this Qadaj man, listening to his statement with an understanding disappointment. It was reasonable thing, after all, he was just a strange old elf with migraines who hadn't slept in days. Had Ezekial been Qadaj, and Qadaj Ezekial, he probably would have been just as skeptical as Qadaj was now. He sighed at Vyse's questions, and said, "I can hear it leaking, yes, but not from a physical place. Alright, let's start at the beginning. Kami is a word to describe the essence, or spirit of a person or object on a certain ethereal plane. This ethereal plane can, on occasion, overlap onto the physical plane, creating a phenomenon known as "leakage" whereby the sensation one feels from observing kami is felt on the physical plane without directly observing the kami plane. I use this lantern to observe the kami plane, and with the exception of leaks, can either interact with the kami plane fully or the physical plane fully, not both. To see the kami plane, simply place both hands on the handle of the lantern and close your eyes." Ezekial proffered the lantern, and closed his eyes, using the occasion to scan the kami plane once more. The being was closer this time, and it had apparently shifted course to be underneath the oasis this time. What was it doing, this thing? It inched upwards at a snails pace and was now going up through the oasis. He opened his physical eyes again and said, "I think I know where it will be emerging, from the oasis. Is there some kind of cave system under the oasis where it could have been living for all this time?" ((OOC: Seeing the kami plane for the first time will be disorientating, if you choose to go that route)) |

Vyse looked at the lantern and though of the area around the oasis... a cave system, his eyes widened, "A smuggler's den, a long circuit of tunnels that go for miles underground, I found it last time I was here, but it's pretty long and has several twists and turns, I know it pretty well from when I delved into it rooting out smugglers." He remembered the day he found it, unfortunately now it was blocked off, some one had filled the entrance with stones, they'd have to use the back way. It was a ways off, but he had kept it secret just in case he needed a place to hide out for a while after purging a corrupted official in the area. "The tunnels have several large cavernous rooms, but the front entrance is blocked... lucky for us, I happen to know where one of the back doors are," He smirked as he tossed Zeke a canteen of water. "It'll be a short walk out of the camp, I've got rough map sketches in my journal, we should be able to find it and take care of the kami before the day is out," He quickly took out his journal from his pocket, flipping through pages until he finds it. He holds it up, showing a rough sketch of a map to the back door. "Now I'll just check Qadaj's map so we have a better sense of where it is and we can leave," He quickly climbed into Qadaj's cart, looking through his belongings until he finds the map. Vyse immediately gets to work with plotting a rough course to where it should be, they'd at least find the area of the back door and be able to search from there. |

A smuggler's den? They must have been very cautious, or very disciplined to keep from succumbing to the urge to explore the cave system. It could have gone down for miles and led them straight into an ambush and they would have been slaughtered nearly instantly by the beasts that lurked nearby the Source. He knew from the kami plane that there was a Source of the oasis, the water rising to the surface, and that there were immensely powerful things down near the Source, most likely drawing energy from it, but he couldn't sense the kami of the cavern system. This would explain how the thing was moving around, but he doubted that they could even do much more than inconvenience the thing. Oh well, if this person wanted to die, he supposed that he could at least accompany him to his funeral and preform his last rites. He listened to the description of the cavern system so that he wouldn't die from a sudden fall, and caught the canteen easily, opening it to gauge the level of the water. Satisfied that the canteen was full, he pulled the sash around it and slung it around his shoulders. He sighed, and said, "Again, it's not called a kami. You can't find a kami on a physical plane, just an ethereal plane. Just call it a 'dasamut' for now, give it another name when you actually see it." Ezekial pronounced "dasamut" in the Arabic fashion, reverting back to his usual accent after it. "Anyhow, lead the way to the caverns system, and I'll cover your rear. Once inside, my lantern will be of more use. We'll have to be careful or we could trigger an explosion." He watched the man climb into Qadaj's cart and take out a map. He raised an eyebrow at his actions, but kept silent. He looked over Vyse's shoulder as he plotted a course, and said, "This is a bad idea, you know. This thing can kill you without batting an eye. And you're going to go along with it anyway. I'm not sure yet if you are brave or just foolish. I like that, Vyse, you're just the kind of guy to do this. Lead on, Xuanzang." |

Vyse smirked, as he heard the the line, 'brave or just foolish,' "Worse then that Zeke, I'm both, I'm the kinda guy who will charge twenty bandits with or without Umbriel, and fight them until they all die... for you see it has been proven time and time again. None can kill the Noclan." He quickly turned, walking out into the desert, it was time to find that back door. He lead Zeke for almost an hour, he kept track of the time and where they were going by looking at the sun. Vyse looked around, he saw three men in white robes, huddled around something, his eyes narrowed as he checked the map again. His eyes widened, they were probably huddled around the back door, were they trying to get into it, or maybe they were waiting for someone, either way it didn't matter. Vyse walked towards them slowly, hands on his sword hilts. He called out to them, "Hey, could you give us a little bit of help, we're lost, see I told this guy over here we've been walking in circles, but he insists we're not, so mind pointing us in the direction of the oasis?" He kept his tone polite and friendly, though the three didn't seem to like his presence, two took out scimitars hidden beneath their long robes as the third takes out two curved daggers. The man wielding the daggers stepped forward, "Surrender now foreigner and become a slave, or die where you stand, or was that to complex for you?" Vyse rolled his eyes, great, a guy who was racist against non-desert dwellers, and a slaver to boot, what a pleasant surprise. Vyse quickly draws his own blades, shouting out their names, allowing the enchants to take place, "Blitz! Sopheur!" Once again the cutlass sparks, lightning moving along the blade's edge as the longsword seems to fade into a incorporeal state and back again, giving it a shimmering quality. He charged forward, slashing at one of the scimitar wielders as he thrust his longsword at the man with two daggers. The final scimitar wielder side steps Vyse, charging for Zeke, hoping he'd be an easier target. |

Ezekial followed the man for quite a long while, nearly an hour. He had been careful to drink very sparingly, as he guessed that to get to the kami would take quite a long while and he would need the water by the end of it. He saw the men in white robes, huddled around a spot in the sand. Ezekial had already started to consider options for fighting, his shoulders tensing. He was silent as Vyse asked the three for help, most likely trying to take them away from this place so that he could ditch them, one way or another, along the trip and double back and get into the cavern system. Ezekial smiled when the three men took out hidden scimitars, and the leader took out a pair of curved daggers, threatening them into servitude. Ezekial expected Vyse to take the initiative to take them down, and grinned widely when one of them broke free and came after him. This person apparently expected an easy fight against an unarmed old elf. What he forgot was that any person who traveled unarmed must either be very skilled in martial combat, or have a wide repetoire of a variety of ranged magics, from close-quarters to long range. Ezekial shouted, "You're a hundred years too early to face me, fool!" The man took a one-handed swing from upper right to lower left with the saber, which Ezekial easily side-stepped to the right, catching his right wrist on the downwards arc. He placed his other hand behind the should and pushed the wrist inwards while pulling the entire arm back. The man dropped the scimitar, gasping in pain, and Ezekial forced him into the ground by swinging the left leg to trip up the man's right foot. Ezekial took a step back, and said, "Well, get up. There's more to be done, man." The man forced himself to his feet, almost falling because of his hurt right arm, and looked behind him. Ezekial was in the triangular stance, right foot forward, left foot behind and to the side, perpendicular to the front foot, and his body turned to the left. "Well, what are you waiting for? This is a fight you can't back out of." Seeing the other two being taken care of handily by Vyse, and being handled easily by this old foreigner, he became very scared for his life, and decided that he wanted to live, no matter what. He began to run as fast as he could, leaving his scimitar as it laid. Ezekial shook his head, and spoke a mantra, "Come to me now, King of the South; Lend me your strength, the Dragon's Mouth." He shifted easily into a bow stance, right leg lunging forward, and his left sliding back, and he faced forward. His right hand launched forward, open, and a fireball launched quickly from it. The man ran quickly, but not quickly enough, for the fireball hit him in the back with quite a bit of force, engulfing him in flames. He screamed for a few seconds and dropped to the ground, dead. Ezekial returned to a normal standing position, and said, "I said that this was a fight you can't back out of. If you try to run, you'll get burnt." ((OOC: *sunglasses put on* YEEEEAAAAHHHH!)) |

Vyse felt the sting of blades cutting into his arms, the man with a scimitar was constantly attacking while the knife wielder waited and struck with great speed. He felt another cut, this time from the scimitar, he growled as he went onto the defensive, his blades moving faster and faster, becoming a barrier of steel, blocking all the swings and thrusts of his opponents. He could feel his body heating up, his anger at being careless, it all overwhelmed him as his eyes started to glow ruby red. The roar from a wild beast escaped Vyse's lungs, stopping the two only for a second, Vyse did not hesitate to strike in his bloodwrath state. Slashing their hands, legs, and arms, he whittled away at them until they tried to run, Vyse wouldn't allow that though, just as the scimitar wielding man turned, Vyse struck with his cutlass, taking him in the stomach. Vyse roared out with the same beastial fury, "Krieg!" A deafening blast rang out from the sword as it slid through the man's chest. The man with the daggers clasped his head, yelping in pain as he fell to his knees, Vyse quickly covered the distance between them and swung both of his weapons at his enemy's neck, beheading him on the spot. Vyse flicked the blood off his blades, his eyes slowly losing their ruby color, he placed a hand on his chest and muttered, "Vigoratus mihi." The small wounds he'd gotten from the daggers sealed up, along with the small gash from the scimitar. He turned to where they were standing, finding a small trap door, he quickly kicked it in. The old wood breaking at the hinges, allowing the small door to fall down. "It'll be a small climb down, allow me to go first, that way I can catch you if the ladder breaks," Vyse quickly started down, climbing down slowly, testing every rung of the ladder before putting his full weight on it. One or two snapped below his weight, forcing him to hang onto the sides of the ladder, but soon enough he was on solid ground, now he needed to wait for Zeke. |

Ezekial ran to the burnt corpse, picking it up gingerly and walking swiftly to Vyse with it. He decided to preform the last rites, even if they certainly did not deserve it. He straightened the corpses, replacing the head of the decapitated man, placed their hands over their chests, and closed their eyes, saying, "Out of the depths I cry to you, Lord; Lord, hear my voice. Let Your ears be attentive to my voice in supplication. If You, Lord, mark sins, Lord, who can stand? But with You is forgiveness, that You may be revered. I trust in the Lord; my soul trusts in His word. My soul waits for the Lord more than sentinels wait for the dawn. More than sentinels wait for the dawn, let Taras wait for the Lord, for with the Lord is kindness and with Him is plenteous redemption; and He will redeem Taras from all their sins." He stood at their feet, and said, "Oh Lord, take these poor souls under your wing, for they have strayed from the path of the blessed." He bowed deeply, and moved to follow Vyse down the ladder. He moved quickly, taking the rungs two at a time. In his haste, he broke a few rungs, but quickly bypassed them, his agile limbs making quick work of the ladder. At the last few rungs, he slipped, releasing his grip to avoid damaging the ladder and fell to the group, rolling out of most of the impact. Getting up, he looked around the system. It was quite a bit cooler than on the surface, and the walls looked like they had small trickles of water running down their sides. He wondered if these caves were natural or if they were hewn out of the stone. It would have taken an incredible amount of work to fashion a cave system with picks and hammers, but it did not seem entirely natural either. He could feel a light vibration all around when he pressed his fingers to the wall and shut his eyes. He took a step away from the wall, and brought his lantern to his face. Taking a small flint and steel from underneath the base, he opened the glass hood and lit the old wick after several tries. On the final try it caught, and its small flame slowly grew. Ezekial closed the glass hood and held the lantern before him. "Alright, let's go. Lead on, Xuanzang." |

Vyse nodded, taking out his journal and flipping to the small maps he made of the tunnels, he walked forward quickly, wanting to get there fast, but not wanting to trip over an unseen stone, they didn't have time to stop for anything. He walked on for a while, taking turns and odd twists that seem to make them back track, then go deeper and back towards the oasis' direction, Vyse constantly read over the maps he made, they would come upon a larger area soon, one where he had killed several men, he sighed as they neared the entrance, he didn't want to know what it looked like, he was in his bloodwrath when he was down here, it would be horrible. They could easily smell something foul in the room as soon as they entered and it was obvious what it was, four mangled, half rotted corpses, were lying about, blood stained the walls and ground around them, sword wounds still apparent all over their body, Vyse shuddered at the though of their deaths at his hand... he knew no mercy in his bloodwrath state. He quickly moved through out the room, looking for anything suspicious, he could find none, so he simply stood in the middle of the room, waiting to see if Zeke could find something. Though something came to his mind, Zeke had called him Xuanzang, might as well find out what it means, "So Zeke, can you sense anything in this room that might lead to our problem? Oh, yeah, one other question, what does Xuanzang mean?" He kept his hands near his sword hilts, he never felt right around corpses, he'd fought way to many undead to be at ease around what becomes them. |
