Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own.

In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins.

There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free.

It was actually a pretty dull day. There didn’t seem to be many animals running about, and the sky was very clouded. The sun didn’t reach all the spots that nature needed it to, but it would have to do without for today. It was the afternoon, and Lyvian was on her search for herbs. She was always on this search, but some days she paid more attention to what she was really looking at. The last thing she wanted was to get a poison plant mixed up with a plant that was supposed to soothe pain.

... Scratch that...

The last thing she ever wanted, was to run into a bunch of weird looking dogs that looked like they wanted to eat her. After the last plant, she looked up to find herself surrounded by red-coated snarling furballs. At a second glance, it was actually a bunch of humans that disguised themselves as some creature. A moment of consideration let Lyvian agree with herself that they did a pretty good job of covering up their human attributes.

Next thing she knew, one of them chucked their spear at her. Thanks to her wings to help her make difficult manoeuvres, she was able to get out of its way. Something really strange happened though when the next one moved to attack her. It was as though his sharp spear had instantly become as harmless as a pillow after Lyvian mumbled ‘pacify weapon’. It was certainly a reaction she never had before, but she wasn’t about to complain. The spear wouldn’t hurt her now, no matter how hard the human tried.

She did the same thing to any others that attacked her, but she saw right away that it only made them even more vicious. They seemed determined to harm her. So, tossing their spears to the side, they grouped around her, chanting in a language that she didn’t understand. Whatever they were trying to do, it wasn’t working. She walked where ever they pushed her, but soon enough, she noticed a sudden drop of scenery. About twenty feet away, the grass disappeared into what looked to be a canyon of some depth.

She did have wings, but she never really used them to fly before. She only found them good for manoeuvres, and looking pretty. So she fought against the strange humans as hard as she could, using her strength and willpower to stop them from moving her any further. “Stop!” she pleaded, not wanting to hurt them despite what they intended to do to her. “I didn’t do anything to you, so let me go!” she continued talking to them, but they were either ignoring her or just not understanding her language. “Stop!!!” she screamed, suddenly noticing she had taken a few steps toward the sudden drop.

She pumped her wings to back up her strength, pushing against the crowd of humans to get away from the drop. One of them yelled at her about something and flapped his arms around, but after that went back to trying to push her...

Anyone with any modicum of common sense knew to stay away from Calmonah Forest within the great expanse of Norwood. Ever since that mage had established his presence here in this wood, strange creatures and men who lived and walked like animals had taken this part of the forest as their own. It was practically suicide to wander into this part of Norwood unless you were knowledgeable of this woodland and knew its ins and outs well.

But even during his retirement within the forest, Logan Pathwalker knew better than to wander into this branch unless he absolutely had to. As his skills had waned over the years, the Ranger knew better than to try and provoke the wrath of this forest's folk, lest he die sooner than he'd wanted to as well. Today was one such day, where he was prowling through looking for a particular type of fey that dwelt within these woods. These evil creatures had taken to this wood, and Logan regularly hunted these creatures for the value of their enchanted pelts in the marketplaces of civilization.

With his dragon-skin longcoat and his powerful longsword Thrae to protect him against Calmonah's evil influences, Logan had set into the forest and had so far had no luck in finding his quarry. Instead, it seemed the ranger had happened upon a gathering of wildmen here in the forest who were desperately trying to push what appeared to be an angelic woman off of a cliff. It seemed that these men had sheathed themselves in the skins and furs of the wolves of this forest, trying their utmost best to hide their human features beneath these pelts. Meanwhile, this woman that they were trying to kill was pleading for her life, as she didn't seem to be making any attempt to attack them, instead she had erected a barrier to keep them from harming her directly.

The creatures seemed so devoted in their attempt that they didn't notice the tall Ranger sneaking up behind them, his blade loose from its scabbard and ready to shed their blood. They'd seemed to be within a foot of the drop off when Logan jumped upon them. Interrupting the creatures' attempts to murder this elven woman, Logan thrust his blade straight through the back of what had appeared to be the wildmen's leader. The creatures, despondent that their alpha-male was dead, quickly scattered into the wood of Calmonah, but not before Logan had cut down two more of them as a warning against them should they try and return. After a brief moment of making sure that these creatures were gone for good, the ranger cleaned and sheathed his sword before turning back to the woman that they'd been so eager to try and murder.

"Do not be afraid," he began gently, "I am here to help."

She couldn’t think of a time that she had felt happier than right now. Her life would have depended on her learning how to fly in mere seconds if they succeeded in pushing her off. It was only when there was only a foot of life left that a man that looked to be a ranger jumped into the scene and fended off the little bastards.

As soon as the ones left alive had ran off, she jogged up to the stranger, and wrapped her arms around him tightly. Her movements showed no sign of intentions to harm him, and her smile showed further that she was overjoyed that he got here just in time. “Thank you very much!” she nearly yelled after her arms were around him.

She wouldn’t answer why she was so frightened of falling off a cliff unless he asked her. Anyone would assume that she could fly, considering the fact that she had wings. However, she was never taught as a child how to use them to fly and she never had the motivation to learn by herself. Alas, no knowledge of how she could gracefully break a fall, no matter the height she was falling from.

Soon enough, she broke the hug, suddenly realising it might be really awkward for him, even though he was the one who said ‘do not be afraid’. So be it. Help was always good. “I’m lucky you got here just in time.” She said, still smiling. “I’m not sure if I agree with killing them, but you saved my life at least.” She wiped off the handprints from those creatures on her clothing, and then stood back up. She hadn’t realised until now just how dirty they were. It wasn’t like they had water anywhere nearby to take a bath.

Logan was rather surprised when the girl suddenly jumped on him when she came up to thank him. Her loud exclamation of thanks was more than enough to show her gratitude toward him. When she finally let hug of him after a tight hug, Logan rubbed the back of his neck before tugging on the side of his longcoat, a sure sign of how awkward the situation was.

"Luck has nothing to do with it," Logan grumbled as he bent and checked the tracks of the creatures, "Anyone with an ear to the ground, like me, could hear those beasts chanting like it was nobody's business. I can't really think of any reason why they would go and try to murder an elf such as you, though. Never really been one for territory, those beast-folk." Logan rose and looked at the girl with a raised eyebrow, implying a question that he wanted answered.

"I'm Logan, by the way, though many call me Peacemaker," the Ranger said before she could answer, though he still expected one, "What brings one such as yourself out to this rather dangerous neck of Norwood?"

The elf didn’t feel any awkwardness, so she didn’t understand his body language right now. She was taken back a bit when he said luck had nothing to do with him saving her. Which in a sense was true, but she also believed that everything happens for a reason. This reason, though currently unknown to her, could have been all the ‘luck’ she needed.

“I don’t know why they would want to hurt me, either. I didn’t realise this place was dangerous. If I knew that, I would have avoided this whole forest because I’m definitely not one for conflict.” She said, only saying what came to mind first. She saw nothing wrong with introducing herself, though. “My name is Sullyvann, but everyone just calls me Lyvian.” She said, and then continued on with her thoughts. “It might have something to do with me picking some of their plants. I’ve been trying to research all sorts of herbs and plants, and trying to recognize which ones are poisonous.”

She wasn’t about to mention that she was part lycan as well, though. That could have been a large contributing factor, but she didn’t see any harm in leaving that part out. It wasn’t like her life depended on it... anymore...

“So what brings you out here? It can’t only be to rescue me.” She chuckled, realising she had rhymed with her words a moment later. She wasn’t embarrassed by it, but it was something she rarely did. “Why do they call you ‘peacemaker’? Do you have something against conflict or something?” she wondered, not meaning to sound nosy, but when she had a question, she was sure to ask it.

"I'm hunting the fey that dwell within these woods," Logan replied flatly, knowing that the commotion would have driven off any of his potential quarry, who required a like of guile and cunning to track down and successfully capture, "The ones corrupted by this forest's evil generally try and murder those who wander into here, so I'm performing a bit of a civil duty, you might say, while at the same time fetching a decent profit for their pelts."

Logan's suspicion was raised slightly when he noticed that she was hiding a detail that might have explained the wolf-men's attacks on her. While her initial explanation made sense, there was a slight hint in her voice that she knew something else. It mattered not, however, as she was definitely not the aggressive or murderous type, at least from Logan's observations.

"Peacemaker is merely a name," Logan said as he began to retrace his footsteps back down the path toward Norwood Forest proper, intending to escort this nice young elven maiden out of the forest, "I was known by a few names back when I was still actively adventuring across this land. Some still recognize me but most don't; I had been retired for many years before I took up adventuring once more. Peacemaker was given to me because of the fact that I generally try and avoid violence wherever necessary, as I find killing a tragic waste of life. However, when I must, I shall use my sword, and once I'm finished killing those who attack me, then I've forcefully forged a 'peace' to the situation." The ranger chuckled at the irony.

"Now, I must suggest we continue moving," Logan said, gesturing Lyvian to follow him, "Those wolf-men will return if we give them enough time to gather more numbers to overwhelm to two of us. Come, I shall take you to my small hermitage within Norwood. Those wolf-men don't venture there nor do any other denizens of this part of the forest. I'll give you food and shelter for the night."

Lyvian showed some confusion when he said he was hunting fey. She had no idea what those were supposed to be, but she didn’t have any interest in them if all they did was attack everything in sight. “For their pelts?” by the sound of it, they were humanoid, but as soon as he mentioned pelts, it made her think of skinning them for fur coats. Not that she would skin them, but it was simply what came to mind when he mentioned ‘pelt’. “They have fur?” she asked, seeming to be absolutely oblivious to what exactly these things were, that Logan called ‘fey’.

She nodded in understanding when he explained that peacemaker was simply a name. She followed him as he started to retrace his steps. He seemed really nice, and he was fairly good company, too. Much better company than those little men that just tried to push her off the cliff. Nasty folk, they were. She shook those thoughts away and paid attention to what he was saying. She didn’t mean to ignore him, or let her eyes glaze, but sometimes, she couldn’t believe how rude some people were. Even if they weren’t exactly... people...

She hoped he didn’t notice her lack of attention, but she had travelled a lot today, it seemed. She was becoming more tired than she expected to at this hour. “Oh, that’s funny.” She laughed quietly shortly after he chuckled. She at least caught the part when he explained the irony of it. She sped up pace as he explained about the wolf-men returning if they gave them enough time. “That’s good to hear that they only stick to certain parts of the forest.” Her eyes lit up when he mentioned food and shelter for the night. “Thank you so much! That’s very kind of you!” she exclaimed happily, though tried to keep her voice down, in case there was anything else nearby that might attack them.

She thought back about when he said ‘hermitage’. She laughed a little bit at the word. “You used to be a hermit for a while?” she asked, “That’s really too bad. There’s so much fresh air and wild animals and other people and beautiful skies to enjoy!” she smiled at him, hoping she could help him avoid being a hermit ever again, if he ever was one in the first place.

"Technically, I still am," Logan said as he continued to guide Lyvian through the woods back toward Norwood and his hermitage, "I live alone in a rather isolated place, amongst the sky, stars, and woods where I belong. It's something I've enjoyed since my own youth. I was able to drive out the squatters who drove me out of my home when Taras was destroyed, but I still need to conduct some repairs and refurbishments. They didn't treat my home well while I was away."

Eventually, after some journeying, the two came into Norwood Forest proper, where the air became more open and clean and not as cramped. Waving forward, Logan began to show Lyvian the way toward his home.

"May I ask what you were doing in that part of the forest?", Logan began to break the silence, "Most people in this area know that Calmonah isn't a place to be trifled with..."

She brushed it off when he didn’t answer her questions about the fey he was hunting. She supposed it wasn’t that important anyway. She held back her laughter when he said that he was still technically a hermit. She couldn’t imagine locking herself away from the rest of the world. She always wanted to be outdoors unless there was something dangerous around.

She paid good attention to her surroundings, making sure that she’d be able to recognize the path through which he was leading her. She breathed in deeply when they stepped into the safer, more open part of Norwood Forest. The air smelled so good out here. She was brought back to reality when Logan spoke, asking her about her intentions in the forest.

“Oh, all I was doing was looking at all the flowers and plants. See, I’m trying to study herbology, so I’ve been collecting plants and flowers of all sorts to find out which ones are the best for healing people. Eventually, I hope to own a house so that I can offer an infirmary for those who need the attention. Some plants that I’ve read about are actually poisonous, so I’m learning to recognize those ones and stay away from them.” She explained, seeming to enjoy talking about her studies.

“I apologize for my lack of education on certain areas of Imythess. All my focus on my studies has forced me to neglect how dangerous these places might be, where ever I need to go in order to find these certain plants that I need. I understand now, that I should be reading up on the history of the places my travels take me to avoid more conflicts. I am definitely not the type to fight or to provoke harmful actions upon others. I tend to avoid negative people.”

She left it at that, thinking that she had given him a fair explanation of why she wandered into Calmonah Forest on her own. “In fact,” she decided to add, “I didn’t even know this area was named Calmonah.” She forced out a laugh, trying to make herself feel better for not being aware of the dangers here. She took in another deep breath and felt the breeze move around her body as if she were moving through water. She would have looked like she was high on drugs with the way she held her arms out and spun herself around, if it weren’t for her eyes being perfectly fine and healthy. Her balance was also normal, but most people would frown at her for being so weird and happy. After all, she was just enjoying life.

Hm, how optimistic, Logan mused to himself as he stopped to watch Lyvian twirl in place like a dancer all of a sudden. The ranger smirked at he observed this rather amusing sight of her dancing even though he was trying to guide her to safety. Poking Lyvian with the point of his sword's scabbard, Logan waved for her to continue following as he continued to navigate through the forest.

Eventually, the two came to a small clearing within Norwood in which stood a small, humble home that Logan had built himself: an eight-roomed house that contained everything needed to help a ranger like himself survive in the forest. He planned on finishing its reconstruction and refurbishment required for his home to be completely hospitable again, but for now it was able to house himself and a guest, if need be. A couple of rooms, the living space, and the kitchen were still livable. Waving Lyvian toward the house, Logan opened the door and stepped inside, leaving the door open for her to enter.

"I'm afraid I'll have to ask you to remove those slippers of yours while in my home," Logan said to Lyvian as he bent down and unbuckled his boots, "I hope you're not averse to going barefoot. When you're done settling in, meet me in the living area, maybe we can have a talk and some tea before I make us some dinner?"

Logan stepped out of his boots and set them next to a small rack that he then hung his coat, swordbelt, and bow quiver upon. Leaning the Keening Whisper, his bow, against the wall, the ranger padded into his living room and retrieved a kettle of water he'd left next to the door before setting out. Lighting the fire, a warm glow soon enveloped the small room as Logan hung the tea kettle over the flame and dropped a small pinch of tea leaves into it.

With that done, Logan settled into his large chair, propping his feet, clad in his handwoven socks, onto a small stool that he used to relaxing. The ranger then waved his guest to take a seat right next to him, in a smaller but still very comfortable chair. He ever nudged over a cushioned stool for her to prop her own feet up onto.

((enjoy ^_^ lol))

Lyvian stopped in her tracks when Logan poked her with his sword, and her wings extended out partway as she used them to stop the momentum of her spinning and to balance. She didn’t stop as suddenly as she would have liked to, because she had to take one more step to make sure she wouldn’t fall over. It probably would have been amusing though, if she did fall over. She could imagine it in her head right now, herself toppling over from not having enough balance. It would be strange, considering she had quite large wings, and she was female. So her balance should be fairly good.

She followed him without question after that, keeping her eyes on him and keeping close. She didn’t want to get lost or get distracted, so she didn’t frown or rebel against his kindness. Rebelling in any situation would just be unnecessary and irresponsible.

She followed him toward the hut that seemed to be under construction, and almost tiptoed her way into the home. “Ok, no problems.” She said as she removed her slippers. “I enjoy going barefoot, actually, especially when I’m walking in grass. The grass feels so soft and weird on my feet.” She giggled to herself, thinking about how the blades of grass felt on her feet and between her toes. She left her slippers at the door after she closed the door behind her, and left her backpack with her slippers. She stepped very quietly along the floor, looking around at the decorations he had, and being careful about where her wings were. They were, after all, fairly large and she did not want to make anything fall over and/or get broken.

“Some tea would be really nice, thank you.” She smiled at him, making her way over to the chair that she was waved over to, and sitting in such a way that her wings were left undisturbed and folded nicely. It had been a while since she has stretched her wings out, but now was not the time. Stretching her wings was an outdoor activity. “This is a cozy home you’ve got here.” She said, looking around more now that she was sitting down. “How long have you been here? You’re doing some construction, I see?” she asked, mainly just for conversation’s sake.

"I've lived here for the past several years, when I retired from adventuring and took to hermitage," Logan answered, taking a quick glance at the kettle to see if it was steaming yet, "I'd seen enough of the world for several lifetimes by that point, which is something considering that I'm a half-elf. I built this entire home with my own two hands. Took me the first couple of years to finish it."

"Once I'd finished, I spent the next few years buying and gathering books and other such things to furnish my home, using the large amounts of money I'd accumulated over the years of adventuring to do so. Not to mention that the Pathwalker order treats its members well. I spent my time of retirement in contemplation and study. I read everyday I'm home. It's probably the elf in me, but something draws me toward educating myself. It's why I set up such an impressive study for me to go through."

"When demonic hordes invaded Taras, however," Logan said, "my home was beset by refugees fleeing the destroyed kingdom. A lot of them wound up squatting on my property and driving me out of my own home! By the time they were gone, much of my home was messy and in disrepair. So I had to take back to the road once more, in order to raise up the money I'll need to restore this home into proper working order. And, well, wandering the road once more feels right to me, as if I never should have left to begin with."

Logan finished just as he took another glance and noticed that the tea kettle was steaming up a storm. Moving quickly, Logan removed the tea from the fire and pulled over a small tray with a couple of small teacups on it, molded from clay and varnished with his own two hands. Pouring the tea, Logan then carried the tray and set it on the small table between his chair and Lyvian's.

"If you enjoy going barefoot so much," Logan said, restarting the conversation as he sat back down, "then why do you wear shoes to begin with? And, may I ask, why is someone like you out adventuring across the world?"

Her eyebrows rose when he told her about having built this place all on his own. Maybe he had magical assistance of sorts? She didn’t think too long on it, as she listened to what he said next. She looked very interested when he talked about the study of books that he accumulated. She hoped that she’d be able to borrow one of his books sometimes if he had any about herbology or healing spells of any sort.

She gave a look of horror when he told her about the attack on Taras and the refugees driving him out of his own home. She couldn’t imagine what that must have been like. She knew that she wouldn’t appreciate anybody doing that to her, if she were to ever find a place to call home. Of course though, her home would be an infirmary for people to visit, so she would have people going in and out all the time during her waking hours. She hoped nobody would take over her home, though.

She waited patiently as Logan raced up to answer the tea kettle. She still thought it was very nice of him to invite her into his home. She certainly did not mean any harm, and (if anything) she’d be willing to help him restore his home, just because she was nice like that. The only thing she’d ask for in return was knowledge, if he had any to share with her whether it be through one of his books or just a lot of talking back and forth.

When he started the conversation again and asked about her going barefoot and her purpose out here, she smiled softly, answering like she was a good friend who enjoyed the chatter. “So that my feet stay clean longer.” She said simply, but then added, “I go barefoot whenever I can, though, whether it’s at a beach or on horseback, or if I’m out enjoying a picnic.”

“I had originally left home, or what I once called home, to find my twin sister. However, the last time I found her, she was doing some sort of religious ritual and purposely drove me away. I never had any reason to return to the moon elf village, so I set on a journey to become an apostle.” She said, figuring since he gave her a story, it was her turn to give him a story. The only dilemma was that her story wasn’t very interesting, nor was it as long as his story was. “I’ve been studying herbology, as well as healing spells. I had heard that there was a special plant of some sort out here that helped with curing disease, so I set out to find it. Problem is: I don’t know what it looks like. Perhaps you might know? You must know this area really well, right, because you’ve lived here for so long.”

She stopped for a moment and looked at the tray with the tea. It was still steamy hot, so she turned her attention back to Logan, hoping that he’d be willing to help her out, even just a little bit.

"Interesting, going barefoot on horseback," murmured Logan as he picked up his own teacup and took a light sip, enjoying the heat of the fresh tea, "One would think they would wear boots while riding if they were keeping their feet clean. Then again, I always wear boots. Far more reliable walking companions than those flimsy slippers you were." Logan smirked as he took another sip, blowing on the tea this time to cool it down a little more.

"So you're an elf, then," Logan said as he spoke up a little louder, "I'm guessing you're of the Avariel kind, then, if that's where you inherited your wings from. Of course, I've met half-elves who are the offspring of angels, and got their wings that way. I, myself, am only half-High Elven and human, so I didn't get to grow a natural set of wings."

"I know of a few different herbs in the area," Logan grunted, taking a longer sip this time as the tea was considerably cooler, "I know enough to know what sort are safe for consumption and gathering to help supplement the garden I keep here. What is the plant you seek, Lyvian?" Logan poured himself another cup of tea to give her time to respond.

“Your feet don’t touch the ground when you’re mounted upon horseback. I’ve only been riding once, though, and there was no seat nor placement for the feet.” She said, having heard what he said, seeing as they were the only two there, and it would have been silent if they weren’t talking. The only other noise was the crackling of the fire. She was not familiar with the technical terms with horses, so she wouldn’t know to call the items a saddle and stirrups.

She didn’t want any argument, though so she disregarded what he said about her slippers and his boots, and explained her heritage to him. “Yes, I’m an Avariel Elf. My parents passed away when I was very young, and we lived nearby a moon elf village. So, one of the elders there took me in and raised me. They knew my parents very well, so they took care of me and passed on what knowledge they had about Avariel elves, as well as their knowledge on moon elves. Of course, my sister took a much different path than me, even though we were raised just the same.”

She reached down to her teacup and started sipping at it, relaxing a little bit as the flavour of the tea was very smooth and enjoyable. She was happy to hear that he knew about a few different herbs here. “Would you be ok with showing me all of the herbs that are safe? I like to try out every plant and herb I gather to see what healing properties they have.” She paused a moment as she sipped at her tea again. “I believe the name of the plant is ashen underbrush? Or river underbrush?” She said the popular names of the plant, hoping he’d recognize the name.
