Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own.

In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins.

There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free.

Metallic Tongue (p)

It was one of those days.

Luckily, she had woken up in a very quiet spot. Nobody had tried capturing her or tying her up like some sort of animal. She knew she had more animal in her than human now, but that was despite the point. She was bitten unwillingly both times, the first being a new vampire that just ran away and left her with no idea how to deal with everything that came with being a vampire, and the second being that grumpy werewolf that seemed so determined to make her one of his brethren.

Both had successfully ruined her life. That vampire mainly ruined it, because she was already queasy around blood. Now she was supposed to drink it to survive. Guaranteed, every week that goes by that she refuses to drink blood on a regular basis, she would blackout for an entire night with a metallic taste in her mouth the next morning. Now that she thought about it, the werewolf known as Brahms kind of helped her out. At least now, she didn’t have to worry about sunlight.

She slowly pushed herself up from the ground, and leaned against the stone wall that was right beside her. She didn’t bother to look at what the wall was holding up, or if it was part of a building or what was going on with it, so it could have been the side of a stable for all she knew. She just wanted the taste of blood off her tongue. It always made her feel like throwing up, and she always did just that if she didn’t have anything to drink or eat to get rid of that metallic taste right away.

After she felt she was awake enough to move around, she stood up and brushed off the dirt that her clothing clung to from the ground. She walked over to what looked like a rain bucket, and cupped her hands into the water, washing her hands and her face with it. It was currently night time, so there were no locals nearby to snap at her for spoiling the rain water. She couldn’t tell what time of night it was, but at the moment, she really didn’t care. She just had to find something to get rid of the disgusting taste in her mouth really soon. Throwing up was never something she looked forward to. So, she took in a deep breath, trying to eat the air to help ignore the metallic taste, then she made her way around the town, looking for an inn or someplace that would offer food.

The night air was calm and cool, and the village was quite. It was peaceful, very contrary to the day's earlier events.. A few hours ago, Higoru had awakened Ulfr to tell him that apparently a scream had been heard at the edge of the village only moments ago. So, they rushed to where the scream had originated.

Upon arrival, they found a traveling merchant, looking a bit shriveled, dead. As they checked him over, they found two small holes in his neck. As Higoru stood and started for the town hall, Ulfr pondered the familiarity of the scent that he noticed on the victim. Still pondering this, he grabbed the wagon the merchant had apparently brought, and began to pull it along with him and Higoru, assuming that the villagers could use the stuff for something. He would have let horses do the job, but it seemed that either the merchant pulled it himself, or the animals he had used to pull the wagon had escaped in fright somehow.

For the next hours up until about thirty minutes ago, he had been arguing with the villagers to stay in the town hall, as there was safety in numbers, and to not go out and search for whatever had done this. Based off the holes in the dead merchant's neck, the most obvious answer as to who or what had done this was a vampire. Knowing the strength of the creatures of the night, Ulfr thought kit best that he alone search the town. Higoru would stay with the villagers, should it be fool enough to try again.

So this was where Ulfr found himself: leaping across the rooftops of the buildings, searching for anything out of the ordinary. Being a shadowdancer had its advantages at night, especially the darker it was. It made it harder for his enemies to see, but it was all to easy for him to see. Plus, he was seen pretty much only when he wanted to be, so long as he was in the shadows.

He stopped jumping when he reached the Woodsons' roof, crouching for a brief reprieve, and to reminisce. This house was very significant to Ulfr, thanks to that fateful night many moons ago.

As he sat thinking, a rustling noise interrupted his thoughts, and he tried to locate it, listening intently. He heard it again, and then what sounded like someone washing their hands. Slinking forward on the roof and coming to a stop when he reached the edge, that familiar scent reached his nostrils once more, and to his surprise, someone he hadn't necessarily expected to see again.

A woman with reddish-brown hair stood below him, water dripping off of her hands and face. Her name eluded him at the moment, but it soon would come to him. It started with a "K", he remembered that much.

Hey, you wouldn't happen to know about a dead merchant now would ya miss? Eheheh, been a while hasn't it? he called, wearing that wolfish grin of his.

Startled, she looked over to where the voice came from. She didn’t recognize his scent, considering she wasn’t quite used to picking out scents from individuals just yet. She did, however, remember his face. A friendly smile broke out across her features. Amazingly, there was no excess blood visible to immediately blame her for the dead merchant.

“Hey Ulfr.” She greeted, amazed that she actually remembered his name. “I might know about it if I could remember what happened. Do you remember those blackouts I told you about?” she asked, not saying anything else for now. She had learned that talking was most often best to avoid, no matter who she was talking to. Talking too much got her sister killed.

She wiped her hands dry on the bottom part of her pants, and wiped her face dry on the sleeves of her shirt. She knew she was a mess right now, so she couldn’t even begin to imagine what she looked like. In a way, she didn’t want to know what she looked like. From what her eyes could see though, she was fine. She ran her hands through her hair, straightening it out.

She noticed he had called her ‘miss’, so obviously he didn’t remember her name. They had only met once before, so she couldn’t blame him. “I’m Klesci, by the way. Nice to see you again.” She said, deciding that would be it for now. She would only speak if necessary until she felt more comfortable. There was nothing she hated more than saying too much for being friendly, then having to pay for it.

Ulfr hopped off as she noticed him, reminding him of her blackouts. Those he remembered, which was why he had asked her about the merchant. Just a little friendly teasing. Apparently she noticed the fact that he hadn't used her name, as she offered it to him. Her smile was reassuring.

I knew it started with a K! And I'm just teasing about the merchant, your scent was all over him. So I figure it was you. Don't worry, I'm not going to "turn you in" or anything.

He could tell simply by looking at her that the incident really bothered her. Understandable, as he hated how much he loved to kill and shed blood. Even though he only did so when necessary, did he need to enjoy as much as he did?

As she wiped her hands and face off, he looked her over, paying more attention to detail. A lot less messier than he would have thought, given the fact that she drank blood only when she blacked out. And since Brahms had bit her. She straightened her hair.

Oh, quit. You look beautiful. Um, anyway, how have you been? Brahms' bite giving you trouble?

Ulfr worried a bit that his compliment wouldn't go over well. But it just sort of... blurted out. Oh well, what's said is said.

She was relieved to hear that he wasn’t going to ‘turn her in’. That was really the last thing she wanted. After a night of pillage and plundering, she definitely did not want to get cooped up in some cell. Something would go down, that was for sure.

Then he said she was beautiful. Ha. That was a first. She looked at him a moment, kind of confused at why he would ever say that. She certainly didn’t think she was beautiful. Better looking than some, but that was about it. “Umm...” she was happy that he continued the conversation right away. “I’ve been okay. Every full moon it’s like I’m a slave to the night or something. It almost feels like someone else is controlling my actions like I’m some sort of puppet.” She said, obviously not enjoying the effects of the bite.

“I wouldn’t really say it’s giving me trouble, though. It’s more annoying than anything else.” She stood straight, putting her fingers in the pockets that were on her hips, watching him. “What’s he up to these days, anyway? Terrorized any vampires lately?” she asked, obviously still not liking the brute. She didn’t like him from the start, so it would probably be a while before she would even begin to look at his reasoning.

She had no idea what to say to Ulfr, though. She didn’t want to blurt out that he was handsome. Sure, it was true, but she was much more conservative with her words it seemed. She simply looked around the area, seeing if anybody else was here. When she didn’t see anyone, she leaned against the building, breathing deeply, enjoying the crisp air.

Yeah, that puppet feeling will continue until you learn to control it. Then you can go in and out of wolf anytime you want. It's easier I suppose if you were born a werewolf, instead of being turned. The fact that you're a vampire probably isn't helping too much. Or maybe it is; who knows. It does seem you've managed to pick the shortest stick though, since you were bit by both a vampire and a werewolf.

She had placed her fingers in her pockets, asking if Brahms had terrorized any more vampires latley. Ulfr laughed.

I wouldn't know, I'm not around him that much. What you happened upon was a chance meeting. Knowing him though, he probably is terrorizing something.

Klesci looked around, and leaned against the buidling that Ulfr had just hopped off of, seeming to relax. This was the first time he had seen her truly relax, but that was probably due to the stress involved with their previous encounter.

Never seen you relax before. But I guess that our previous encounter didn't really allow for that though huh? Eheh. Oh, that reminds me, you did realize that I said the things I did to try to prevent Brahms from mauling you right? I'm not that messed up in the head. I was just trying to appease the beast, or so to speak.

He hoped she did know that, and if she didn't, that she believed him now. Otherwise she would probably think him to be some "anti-everything-that-isn't-like-me" or something along those lines.

A light breeze blew, adding a calm to the day's earlier events.

Upon hearing that learning to control the change would make the puppet feeling go away, she made a mental note to be certain of learning that. It might come in handy someday to be able to not only shapeshift into a dragon willingly, but also shapeshift into a werewolf willingly. She was just really glad that she wasn’t trapped in the night like all full-fledged vampires were.

She chuckled lightly when Ulfr said he was probably terrorizing something. It really would not have surprised her if he was. She found it a bit odd that they actually didn’t see each other much. “Really? You two seemed to get along like you had been buddies for a while.” She said, raising an eyebrow at him. She wouldn’t argue the fact if they actually weren’t long-time buddies, it was just something to be a bit curious about.

“Oh, yes I did realise that.” She smiled now, “Thank you very much for that. Bummer that you couldn’t have stopped him from biting me. I suppose being turned is better than death, though. Now it’ll just take me longer to die.” She laughed out loud for a couple seconds, then went silent, realising it would actually take a lot for somebody to kill her. She was technically undead now from that vampire bite, she had faster healing now from the werewolf bite, and she had naturally strong muscles and firm skin, thanks to her being born a dragon shapeshifter. Not like she would share it with the world, but she wasn’t so sure if she wanted to be so strong now. Especially after she lost her sister to that insane demon with his mijory sword, or whatever he called it. It was a bloodthirsty sword with some weird magic in it that made things turn to dust.

She had never placed any judgement on him for doing or saying anything that he did. She was actually really thankful that he had saved her life. “Am I a better person when I’m relaxed, or something?” she wondered, her curiosity seeming to get the better of her now. She seemed very curious about Ulfr, but it was just difficult to tell why.

Buddies huh? Well, we have met once before. And that time, we fought this white demon. He teleported all around, and was really strong, like insanely so. Luckily, I had a few escape tricks up my sleeve, and got us out of there. He’s been interested in me ever since, simply because I fought with my brain instead of just trying to bite and claw.

Klesci actually had known that Ulfr was simply trying to save her, and at that, he breathed a sigh of relief. That’s good, for a second there I thought you might think I was crazy.

She laughed rather loudly about it taking her longer to die. He laughed a bit himself too. I suppose so. It’ll take more to kill you too. I guess just keep a positive outlook with this and you’re good to go. To be honest with you, I don’t think I could stand being a regular human. So nose dead! He chuckled some more.

He liked how easy it was to talk to Klesci. They did have certain “traits” in common. Sure he was friendly around people, but very few did he reveal much of his thoughts to, mainly just Higoru. And there was Mirage, but he had no idea where she was. Seemingly just dropped off the face of the earth. The Woodsons somewhat, simply because of how much they loved him, even though that stemmed from Higoru and himself saving their lives.

She asked him if she was a better person when she was relaxed. Well, you’re able to smile now. It’s… alluring, just like that laugh of yours. Sounds so happy, makes me feel like nothing could go wrong. Better enough for you? he asked, raising an eyebrow as he did so.

She was... something.

“A white demon?” she repeated, remembering that exact insane grin. “That’s the same demon that killed my sister!” she said, trying to keep her voice down, even when she felt so surprised. “He only let me go because his sword wasn’t actually killing me like he expected it to.” She looked down at her feet momentarily, then back up at Ulfr. That was the first time that she actually told someone about losing her sister. It wasn’t her biological sister, but they still had that sisterly kinda connection.

Memories started flowing back from that day. For a few seconds, her eyes glazed over as she watched the young dragon getting slaughtered so easily again. She was just trying to protect her.

His laugher broke her out of the minor trance, and she found herself thinking back to the days when she actually lived with humans. “Life would be a lot shorter. They’re a lot nicer people, though...” she thought on that for a moment, then changed her mind on it a little bit. “Well, they have smaller issues to get upset about, anyway...” she wasn’t sure how to word it, but she definitely was not defending them. Humans are so weak. If she were one, she’d be afraid of some demon coming along and having the time of his life slaughtering everyone in the home.

She didn’t have anything against humans in general, but the ones she lived with for the first little while of her life certainly didn’t care much about her. The humans had stolen a dragon egg and put it into some sort of cage to study it, and she happened to be the kid that was stolen by the dragons. She was especially glad that the humans didn’t kill the baby dragon, because the dragons would have killed her.

It was amazing that she was still able to smile, despite everything that she’s been through. Her smile only got wider when he told her about her smile and laugh. Her cheeks were even feeling hot. “Yes.” She almost giggled at the compliment. She was usually a positive person, but when it came to people biting her, she tended to get slightly upset. Slightly, being a large understatement. At least now, she had a good friend to talk to. She hoped they were friends, anyway. He was really friendly, and she enjoyed his company. It would be a shame to not be friends with him...

Ulfr’s happy demeanor faltered momentarily as she exclaimed that the same white demon had killed her sister, and had spared her only because his sword behaved differently than he had expected. She seemed almost lost within the depths of her mind, but soon returned, and started talking about humans.

A lot nicer huh? Hmm. In all actuality, I should probably hate their guts and slaughter the lot of them. Human bandits killed my parents, simply because they wanted my mother’s pelt. I was about a year old when that happened. But no, if there is one thing that I’ve learned, it doesn’t matter what a person is, it is who they are. For some reason, I’ve always tried to help those that couldn’t help themselves, or were the definite underdogs.

He paused for a moment, collecting his thoughts before he continued. His own smile was gone, replaced by a somber countenance. The only reason I’m accepted here, instead of being chased off, is because I saved a family one night about a year ago. Well, to begin with, some bandits were kidnapping the Woodsons’ twin daughters, Kaylen and Kaylan. Someone by the name of Higoru contacted me and wanted to meet. More like he wanted to see what I could do. We were racing when we heard the screams. I tore two or three apart, while Higoru dispatched two himself. He was a regular human. Well, a ninja.

So then the Woodsons invite us in. Higoru just sits on top of the roof, he isn’t much of a socializer. He… had his own traumatized memories. As I was inside, more bandits came. They managed to set the house on fire, even though it was pouring rain. So they bust in the back wall, and rush the family, trying to kill them all. Nathan, the husband and father, Susan, the wife and mother, and Kaylan get out of the house. Higoru was dealing with some bandits out there himself. Meanwhile, I turn around and Kaylen is still standing in the dining room, and a bandit is about to stab her. I push out of the way and get stabbed myself. Got a scar to prove it.

Ulfr lifted his shirt, exposing his stomach and chest, and pointed right underneath his sternum, where a pale mark was, about an inch long and half an inch wide.

So I take the sword out of me, draw my own, and kill the bandits in the house. Then I faint, and apparently Kaylen drags me out. And here I am. Were it not for that night, I don’t think I’d still be in this village. Realizing he had just monologued, he promptly apologized.

Sorry, I didn’t mean to get windy there, eheh.

However, when she answered a simple Yes," to his response about her relaxing, and blushed a little, his wolfish grin returned to his face. He chuckled, his eyes closed in amusement. As he reopened them, she seemed as if she was stifling a laugh or something. Her smile was wide, and it relaxed him, and he began to return to his usual happy self. The dead merchant seemed to have been forgotten in the wind, as the two enjoyed appeared to be enjoying each other’s company more than either one could have anticipated.

It doesn’t matter what a person is, it is who they are.

This had to be the truest statement that she had heard in ages. She nodded her head in agreement, seeing that he was definitely the only kind-hearted werewolf that she knew of. She listened to his story, actually finding it really interesting how things worked themselves out for him. She thought it was very brave of him to save that family. It obviously paid off to save the ones who deserved to be saved. Klesci usually found it really difficult to tell who really deserved something and who didn’t. She never cared to take the time to learn how to tell the differences, seeing as the only people she came across seemed to want to harm her.

She found it very heroic of him to let himself get stabbed just to save a little girl. She never really thought about her opinion of children... probably because she never spent time around them, even as a child herself. She had never understood humans, and was probably never going to try to understand them. Her knowledge lay mainly in things about dragons, so when it came to talking about any other species, she found it difficult to make input to the conversation.

She looked at the scar that he lifted his shirt to show her, raising her eyebrows a bit in surprise. It wasn’t like she didn’t believe him, but mainly that he had a scar. She had thought that werewolves or shapeshifters of any sort never got scars. She shrugged her shoulders when he finished his story and apologized for ‘getting windy’. It wasn’t like she had any stories of her own to tell in such detail.

“Oh, don’t worry about it.” She said, “I’m just glad to hear that you made it through that entire mess just fine. That’s amazing that a little girl pulled you out of the fire, though. I’ve never heard of someone so little doing that.” She was glad to see him smiling again, even after telling her about his whole experience with that family. Most people would have gotten all depressed about bringing up old memories, or gotten angry about it just to hide the sadness. It could have gone either way, but not with Ulfr. He was the most positive being on this planet that she had ever met.

"Oh, don’t worry about it. I’m just glad to hear that you made it through that entire mess just fine. That’s amazing that a little girl pulled you out of the fire, though. I’ve never heard of someone so little doing that.” she said, and he breathed a sigh of relief that he hadn't bothered her with his story, as long as it took to tell it. He reached his right hand to the back of his head, scratching. With his eyes closed and chuckle, he responded, "Eheheh, well, so wasn't exactly little. She's only one year younger than I am, and I'm not dreadfully heavy in my human form, though I am definitly heavier than I look."

He opened his eyes, and that wolfish grin of his prevailed on his face. He was certainly glad that she seemed to enjoy the story, even if it was time consuming to tell. As he thought about his story more, he noticed that he should probably notify the villagers that the danger was "gone", he thought he'd suggest she follow him to the town hall, and then they could spend some more unstressed time together, if she wanted.

"Hey, the towns people are probably wondering where I am, as I did tell them I would look for what killed that merchant. You want to walk with me there, maybe share a story you have in that head of yours on the way? We could go do something afterwards if you want. Maybe I could help you learn to control your "wolfish counterpart" now, eheh. What d'ya say?" he suggested, and hoped she didn't refuse the offer. It would dampen his spirits more than he'd like.

As he told her that the girl was actually just a year younger than him, she said “Oh it sounded like she was really young.” She didn’t bother commenting on what weight he appeared to be, since she knew that she was certainly no expert on being able to tell what a person weighed just by looking at them. She had seen some people that were like twigs, but their weight was average simply because they had so much muscle built up in them.

“What are you going to tell them if I go with you? I’m sure they would over react right away.” She wondered, thinking they would try to kill her or lock her up just because she was the one that killed the merchant. It was a fair enough deal, but she really didn’t want to be locked anywhere or treated like some sort of animal. She had no idea what the merchant looked like, but she could only imagine it was not a pretty sight.

She tried thinking about some sort of story that she could tell him as soon as he suggested it. She couldn’t think of anything from her past that would be particularly interesting, but she had personally always found one thing absolutely intriguing. She grinned when he offered to help her learn how to control her ‘wolfish counterpart’. “That would be greatly appreciated, if you could help me control it more. That way, I can avoid finding myself in random villages and not having any memory about how merchants end up dead.”

“But yeah, I’ll go with you.” She said, gesturing for him to start walking so that she’d follow. “I don’t know the way around here, so you lead the way, trusty navigator.”

Once they were on their way, she remembered about him wondering if she had any stories to tell. Then she remembered a particular detail about her past that she thought she’d share. “So you want a story, hmm? Well, where do I start...” It took her a couple minutes to think of where she should begin her story. So many things had happened within a small timeframe way back in her younger days.

“I was born a dragon shapeshifter, as you might already know. However, I was raised with humans until I reached two years old. The humans I was with had gone scavenging for gold or some sort of treasure, and found a dragon’s egg instead. They stole it right out of its nest and raised it in captivity, watching everything it did and controlling its behaviours and just not letting it have the freedom that every dragon deserved, basically. My father was the one leading the research, and conveniently enough, he had me wander into the forest to find some sort of herb. I don’t know if he actually needed it or not, but if he wanted me to do something, I had to do it one way or another.”

“Anyway, into the forest I went, but I ended up meeting the mother of the dragon that was stolen and kept in captivity. Somehow, she knew that it was my father that stole her baby, so she stole me, so to speak, for revenge. She basically prevented me from going back to the village, and made it a rule to remain in my dragon form. I was raised from that point on in my dragon form, only shifting to my human form when they wanted me to spy and see how to get that baby dragon back. I learned very quickly that the stolen dragon was royalty in its family. It was my job to get it back, but when somebody opened their mouth saying that I smelled more dragon than human, the baby dragon was killed. Without hesitation, it was my father that took its life.”

She couldn’t help but fall silent for a bit. “I was forced to watch her die, and there wasn’t a single thing that I could have done.” Klesci really hoped that he would say something. There was more to the story, but the memory of watching the young dragon get killed so horribly was stained in her mind forever. It didn’t matter how many centuries would pass.

He listened intently to her story as they started heading towards the town hall, where everyone was waiting. Hopefully they wouldn't be in an uproar when they arrived. Out of everyone there, however, Higoru would be the only one he would trust the knowledge of Klesci's "involvement" with the merchant's death. He would understand.

He frowned as se mentioned her father taking a dragon egg, and imprisoning the poor thing simply for research. As she continued, he his frown deepened as her father had been the reason she had been kidnapped by a dragon as a method of revenge. She described being forced to stay in a dragon form. Then she told him of how the dragon pup had been killed by her father when she herself smelled more dragon than she did human.

As he thought about her story, questions began to come to life in his mind, and his curiousity rose its head. "If you don't mind Klesci, I have a few questions. First, if you were not already part dragon, how were you able to change into one? Second, why did your scent matter to your father? Third,... well, that's all for now I guess. Ah, there's the town hall.'

Ulfr pointed as he mentioned the town hall again, showing her exactly what building he was referring to. They had yet to cross the square, so it would a minute or two before walking would have them arrive at the door. Plenty of time for her to answer his questions, if she did decide to answer them. He figured they would be answered just as they walked up the steps to the door.

Of course, she left something out. She realised just how confusing it would be to know someone was born a dragon shapeshifter, yet they were raised with humans... something didn’t add up.

“Well, as I mentioned before, I was born a dragon shapeshifter, so I already had the ability to change into a dragon. I still have it, despite the other crap in my bloodstream now.” She said at first, and then took a moment to say the rest. “My birth parents were actually killed before I got to know them. I didn’t see them get killed, but the human that was supposed to be my mother told me everything. Shapeshifters were seen as a violation to nature, or something, but she couldn’t stand the thought of killing me because I looked like someone else that was close to her heart but got killed by a dragon.”

She had to take a moment to think about it, since she didn’t want to get her story any more confusing than it might already be. “My so-called parents had forbidden me to ever use my dragon form because they were so against it, but at night whenever nobody else was looking, which was very rarely, I went outside and played around in my dragon form. I didn’t learn how to fly until later when I was living with the dragons.”

Just as they were walking up to the doors of the town hall, she said, “My father was the leader of the town. He hated dragons, and he did not want any of his kids having any relation to dragons. When I was kidnapped though, I don’t know if anyone even cared that I was gone. Since I was in my dragon form 24/7 until the day I went back, they were able to see the difference in character as well as change in scent.”

She figured that would be enough to explain why her father cared about her scent. Her heart was racing as they went to open the town hall doors. She would be sure to keep her mouth shut until she heard what Ulfr said to the people.
