Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own.

In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins.

There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free.

The winter was coming and Kaess had taken some time away from the monastery to visit the graves of his mother and master. Both were long dead, but he always came at least once a year to repair his master’s shack, which many used as a resting place when out hunting or in need of shelter. He also tended to their grave stones. He had been here for most of the day and had taken a walk through the woods, finding himself drawn to the lake. The trees were shedding their leaves and winter was rapidly approaching. ‘I should probably stay two more days. That should be enough to get done with what needs doing. Sometimes I wish these visits would get easier.‘

Finding himself on the shores he saw the leaves floating on the chilly lake. It was calm and peaceful in this late afternoon. He wore his normal monk’s robes and two sturdy pairs of boots with sheathed blades on them. He also had a pair of bladed gauntlets sheathed on his belt. He also wore a simple cloak of magical nature that kept the cold away from him. He could walk through the snow in nothing, but his under clothes and still be warm with this cloak on. The last thing was a small bag hanging at his hip. It looked simple, but it was a bag of never ending space and thus contained far more than most people could image possible.

Taking the calm feeling in the air into himself he found himself starting to practice on the shores twisting in arcs and patterns of increasing difficult. His hands and feet would come alive with fire at points making fantastic patterns, but he never lit a single leaf on fire as the floated past him. He found it good to do this it helped him focus and unwind from the emotions he still felt when he came to visit this place. Lost in thought he didn’t even notice if anyone approached until they were close. It was just him the wind, the leaves and the water.

Norwood... The place that Hollis would have loved to go. If one could get to the city, Hollis had heard, you could meet the elves that lived there! Hollis would love to meet other Elves. Just to know that there are others in the world who had a similar blood back-ground to her. That would make Hollis so happy!

It was when she was wondering around Norwood forest when she saw him. There stood a man, elf, maybe. And look at what his doing!?! Thought Hollis. He was playing with fire. The man was moving fire in suck a way that Hollis wouldn't have thought plausible without toughing a leave. And, yet, here he stood, not a leave touch the flame, not a piece of the flame toughed a brown falling leave. The changing of the seasons. They make things like what he doing hard. And yet he is doing it!! Hollis got closer. She had a simple travelers outfit on. Her Dagger hidden in her boats.
As Hollis got closer, the leaves started to conch under her feet. She hoped that it wouldn't make the man stop. So, she stopped. Hollis waited to see what would happen. After a few minutes, she sate down where she stood. Hollis took out her book that she had written down her fire spell. It had been so long since she had done anything with it, that it took a few times to get it to light up. After then, she tried to do one of the things that she had seen the man do.
It was a lot harder to then it looked. She ended up catching things on fire, like a leave. She held the fire in her hand, and looked to see if she had the ice spell. Which, she did. Part of it had smeared off, but she guessed what it was. Then, Hollis said the spell. She held fire and ice. Working together, she put out her fire.
The leaves that lay around Hollis where so pretty. She took out her quill, and started to try and draw them. She had never been able to draw well. She took out that page of her book, set it to flame, and throw it into the near by lake.

Kaess noted the arrival of another, but it seemed she had no intention of disturbing him. He could feel if someone was there to fight and that wasn’t it either. Thinking, ‘Just another person finding some time to relax. Well we can share for a time.’ He continued working through his forms occasionally noting what the other was doing. She seemed to be an elf. That wasn’t that unusual here and even casting two spells didn’t surprise him too much. What did surprise him was the small spark he felt when she activated the fire speell. ‘She may have the talent. I will have to talk to her in a bit.’

Despite this he worked through to completion while the elf did other things. His movements continued to change as he continued moving through his arts. During this time he studied the elf when he could. He noted that she was trying to copy his movements a bit, but clearly she wasn’t very skilled yet. She also had a look in her eye and it made him wondered why this seemed new to her. Most elves new the forest like their own back yard. Maybe she was still young for an elf, but she didn’t seem that young. ‘None of my business for now.’

He finished his exercises as she was tossing some paper she had lit into the lake. He then walked over. He stretched his wings a bit as he walked and then folded them up behind his back. “Interesting…. May I ask who you are? I do not believe we have met before. My name is Kaess.” He found this person interesting as his instincts seemed to be aware of something, but what he wasn’t sure of yet.

He finished just as Hollis stood up. Hollis stretched a little. It would be nice to take off from here... Maybe I could find the village faster if I did! Thought Hollis as she stretched her wings in her mind. She could very easily take off from where she stood. The space in the sky was big enough to fly up, and circle around a little.

Then, he came over to Hollis. As he walked- He has wings?!? thought Hollis. He, to stretched his wings, but he did them for real.
"Interesting? If I may ask, what is so interesting?" Asked Hollis."I am not surprised that you don't think we've every meet. I am not from here. At least, not in a time that you would still know whom I am. Hollis. Hollis Draka. It's nice to meet you, Kaess? That is a very unique name." said Hollis. She put her hand out to shake his. Hollis really want to make a comment on his wings, but she didn't know what to say.
"You have wings?" she asked. That was the first thing that Hollis thought of, and so she just went with it. The want to take off was even more so. She could feel the wind on her face. The way she felt so free!

Without knowing, as Hollis thought of this, her wings started to come out. Hollis went to hide them, but she was sure that Kaess had already seen them. She stop the transformation right there. She didn't want it to get out that she was part dragon. Few knew that, and she wanted to keep it that way until she could fly good. But, part of her wanted to got full dragon, and take off right then, just to show Kaess that she could fly! She didn't though. She didn't know how he would react if she did that. For all she knew, they where just part of him. He might not even be able to use them!

Kaess laughed at her comments. This was one of the first people ever to be surprised about his wings. Most saw his golden scales, sharp claws and other dragon features and just assumed wings would go with such a person. How many times in his past had an ignorant person run away in fright because of his appearance? Oh it didn’t happen with elves as much, but still someone not noticing that he had wings? His wings were large enough that he really didn’t know how she missed them.

Before Kaess could respond he saw a flash of something that seemed almost like wings, but they were gone before he could blink. His instinct was telling him that brief glimpse he had seen meant there was more to this Hollis than there appeared to be. He didn’t feel threatened by this since the person was friendly enough, but it still made him wonder what it was. He almost felt like asking a question, but it would have to wait. He didn’t even really know this person yet.

Soon he responded to her after his moment of thought. “Yes I do have wings and I fly around with them too. Not a very odd thing for a half dragon. Never really had that question asked before. Most just see the scales and the wings and say there is a half dragon. Was there any particular reason for that question?”

He then considered what else she had said. It seemed he was right that Hollis was new here or at least hadn’t been here for years. If she had been here long ago it was well over a hundred years, but elves lived long so it was possible. He then continued without waiting for an answer to his question. “I should say it is nice to meet you too. As for what was interesting many things are interesting, but I suppose I just find new people interesting. Plus I have a sense about a certain affinity some people have for fire and I believe you may have that affinity. If nothing else that makes you more interesting than most.”

Hollis blushed. How stupid could she have been? He was right, most half-dragons do have wings. But, at least to her knowledge, not all of them could use their wings. Should I tell him about me being part Dragon? Thought Hollis. She nodded, to herself mostly, but it was seen.

"Well, I suppose the reason I asked was-" started Hollis. While she had said this, she was becoming more Dragon like. Her wings became full. The tips of them became a blue-yellow. The body of them became light, sky blue, and the ends, closest to the ground, and where they connected to her body became a very dark blue. Not quite navy. The rest of her body became the same shade of dark blue. From where her tail connects to her body, to about a quarter of the way done became a purple-red. And, the tip of her tail became the same blue-yellow of the top of her wings.

"-Is because I am part Dragon..." Said Hollis, right before she was full dragon. Hollis took off into the sky. She felt so free! She did a few circles, then came back to the ground. Within a few minutes of being on the ground, she was back to normal. She kept the wings. They where her favorite parts of being part Dragon.

He said that she was interesting. Hollis blushed a little again. No one had said that about Hollis in a very long time.
"Thank you. I guess fire is one of those things that I have always liked..." Hollis said. She light up her fire again, and held it in her hands. "I want to get better with it, but I don't know how to!" she said, then looked away from Keass. After what he did, she didn't feel right being in front of with fire. She put it out.

Kaess watched impressed as the elf shifted forms. It wasn’t often you saw a half dragon with that talent. At least he hadn’t met many in his travels. He watched as she took off taking the moment to ponder Hollis. ‘So that is what was bugging me about her. She has dragon blood too. She seems to have fun up there, but she could be better if she trained….. oh jeez look at me already thinking of training. I guess I really have become a teacher in more ways than one.’

He chuckled as she landed. “A very nice display, to think I would meet another elven half-dragon. A pretty one too.” He didn’t mean anything by the comment, but was just saying the what he thought. He was always blunt in most cases. He hadn’t even noticed her blushing from earlier. He almost never noticed things like that.

When she had lit her fire again he felt it. He now decided he should ask her about learning from him. “As for the fire, well I am a master of a style that blends the martial arts and the raw form of fire. It is called the Burning Fist. It is difficult to learn for many people and you do need to know something of fighting. I think it is best if you learn unarmed combat. Unarmed combat I find gives you the best chance of defending yourself and the least chance of killing people when you don’t need to.

I would be willing to try teaching you if you want. However, if you only want to learn of fire by it’s self I can try teaching that too. I am not sure how well I could do given I haven’t really taught someone like that before, but it is up to you.
” He pulled out a small red stone from his bag, but held on to it until she answered, so he could know what he should show her and how.

"You'll teach me how to master fire?!?"Hollis couldn't believe her ears! Someone was welling to teach her how to "play" with fire. She didn't know what to say.

Keass then pulled out a red stone. He just held while Hollis thought about what to say. She was speechless. But, some where in her mind, she wondered what that stone would be used for. Hollis hasn't really ever had much of want to learn martial arts. She liked to fight as a dragon, or as with her dagger, staff, or sword. She never really thought of martial arts as much of a way to defend. But, she was welling to bet that you need to know the movements of what to do before you could do it. The only thing that Hollis could do was light the fire, and throw it at people. She was never one to fight with it, though. She could barely hurt herself with it. And, she has tried!
"I... I accept, Keass. Thank you." Said Hollis, she felt the need to bow, but she held herself. Now, she waited to see what Keass would do...

Kaess found the reply interestingly simple. Though he would get some clarification on some points he had forgotten to ask her. Still he supposed she meant teaching all the things he had mentioned.

He wondered where to start. ‘She doesn’t look like she has had much training, so I guess it will be a while until I can teach her much. She is eager though and maybe she will surprise me a bit. Anyways I suppose I should get the test out of the way.’

He opened his hand and the small red stone floated over to her. “I think we will start with where your knowledge is at. Just hold that stone in you palm, relax and think on fire. Then tell me what fire is? Why it does what it does? Everything you know. Any flows of energy you feel during this time just focus into the stone.”

The stone was of course his fire stone, but he had found that he could test people with it to confirm they had the affinity for fire needed to learn the burning fist. It was also a good way to judge their power and potential. During the test the student could often feel their connection to fire in new ways. Depending on the person the fire stone could glow, change colors, change temperatures or even float around a person in patterns created by their subconscious. It was also possible that a combination of these effects would appear.

Kaess would judge the effects and her words. It helped him not only understand the person better, but also allowed him to form a connection of sorts. He could use that connection latter to stimulate his student’s own powers where often times it would falter without aid.

After she was done he would have the stone float back to him and pocket it back into his bag.

Hollis stood there as the stone floated towards her. She had no clue how this stone would react to her. She hoped that it would not do anything to mind blowing, or, worse, not anything at all. Hollis had a short day dream about what would happen it the stone didn't do anything...

The stone just stayed where it was... Keass said "I guess, you are not the right type of person that I thought you where..." He came and got the stone, then said "Good luck in life, Hollis..." and walked away. He took off not far away from where Hollis stood. She started to cry... Then, Hollis snapped out of it, and took the stone.

Hollis searched her mind for what she thought of as fire. There wasn't much, to her dismay.
"Fire..." said Hollis. She took a deep breath as she put all her thoughts in order. "Fire is a piece of magic that isn't easy to master... It is hot, but that is because it has been given a bad name. Some people think that when Fire comes, horrible things well happen. But, they haven't taken the time to get to know what it can do, when it is in the right hands..." as she said this, Hollis closed her eyes. Her words started to disappear, and then, she said nothing... Hollis stood, in silence, for a while, as she thought.

In her mind, Hollis saw her as a child. Her father, or, what she know as her father, was playing with a pot of fire, and Hollis had feared for his safety. This man had left soon after he had this. He had left, at least as Hollis understood it, because of what she had done. Hollis had gone, running up to her "father" and had taken the flame in her hands. She hadn't done anything, flinched, nothing, as the hot flame licked her hands raw. All she know was that she had to make sure that nothing happened to the man that she know to be her dad.
She ran to the back to, kicked it open, and had tried to throw the flame outside. But, it hasn't gone. So, Hollis moved the little that was on her right hand to her left, and had run over to the sink in her bathroom. She turned on the water and put it out. For months after that, her mother and father hadn't looked at her the same. They had kept her away from anything that may have a flame inside. Then, a half year after it had happened, her father had left, saying that he had to go somewhere on business. He had never come back...

As Hollis thought about that, the stone in her hand had heated up. And, though she hadn't noticed it, it had started to move. The stone moved in a star motion, then it would go in a circle. Hollis opened her eyes, and the stone stopped.
"In the wrong hands, Fire can be deadly, but, in the right hands, with the right about a flame, it can help heal the world..." and with that, Hollis let the stone go.

it floated in spot for a moment, then went to Keass. "So, can I join?"asked Hollis...

Kaess listened and watched what happened. He could feel the essence of fire moving around and it confirmed what he had expected. The explanation of fire was simple enough, but most importantly she had some of the truth. Fire was a complex thing and no one could completely explain it. The motion of the stone completely confirmed it. No one could cause a fire stone to react unless they had a tie to fire. He smiled as his stone came back to him through the air. ‘Well that went well, now to find out how much basic training she needs.’

“Very good, you have the basic understanding of fire and the connection is certainly there. It is a nice strong one too. Now then do you know anything about the martial arts or any combat really? If you do I would like to see a demonstration of what you know. If not then I suppose we can cover a few of the basics today before evening sets in.”

He waited for her answer:

If she did try to test herself against his skill he would demonstrate his impressive speed and skill blocking or dodging anything she could physically throw at him.

If she decided to try the basic training he would start by moving her through some basic exercise and showing her how to form a proper fist and the most basic of punches. The exercise would be tiring as they often would use muscles most people didn’t even know where there. Kaess even added in a few wing stretches. The punch training was simple to understand, but actually getting the movement right would be hard for this first day.

As soon as the sun was near finished setting he called a stop to what they were doing. “Well that is good enough for a light start. If you still want to continue you can come with me and we can have some dinner together.”

If she followed he would lead her to his master’s shack in the woods.

Hollis stood there. Basics? Hollis didn't know much about fighting. She could defend herself if she had to, but... She wasn't the best. Hollis decided to go with... the truth. "I... ummm, well, I can sorta do a little fighting? I mean, I would never make the first move, but, if someone went to attack me... I guess I could try beat them..." That wasn't a good answer... and Hollis knew that. But, what else was she going to say?

Hollis moved into a potion that she would make if there was someone trying to get her. She pictured what Melmoth had looked like to her the first time that she had seen him as a Demon. That was the best thing that she could think of. She knew that there where a lot worse things out there, but... She didn't want to think of them. Hollis focused on Melmoth. The huge, flame wings... The bright red body, with the fangs... Those claws...

Hollis shivered and opened her eyes. She looked at Kaess. She was standing in a way she didn't know that she knew. She had seen people stand like it on the streets, but she had never tried to do it, herself.

Hollis held her Scimitar in one hand, guarding her face and most of her body. For the rest of her body, she held her small glass dagger in the other hand. She had never used either these things in real fight. She had used them on travelings with Melmoth to Taras. But, that was it. She was never one to fight with people. She stayed to herself...

Hollis looked at Kaess again. She had no idea what to expect on his face...

~ ~ ~

They had just finished, and Hollis noticed that she was hungry. She took his offer, and waited to see where they would got for dinner.

On arrival at his late masters shack he took some wood from a pile and started a fire up. It wasn’t hard when you can light your hands on fire to get things going. He then pulled out a salted ham from his bag of never ending space. He also pulled out an iron pan larger than the bag itself and small iron stand to put the pan on. Soon he had some slices of ham frying up. As they cooked he would pull out some vegetables and a bit of spice to add to the meal.

Traveling to the place had taken some time and the small clearing was very dark now and the fire created long shadows that stretched into the forest. The pile of repair materials for the shack was a dark lump near the back of the building. The night air was cold and Kaess expected that it might snow soon. He hoped that the snow and rain would hold off until he was finished with the repairs. The quite sounds of the night were faint, but peaceful.

There was also a barrel of water near the front of the shack. Kaess offered a simple clay cup to use. “So while dinner is cooking why don’t you tell me a bit more about yourself. I like to be friends with those I teach. Or if you have any questions feel free to ask away.” He was indeed curious about Hollis. Finding out a bit more about people was always a good thing.

He knew it would take a while to teach this one much. She didn’t have any real training and her movements had been awkward at best. Still that would be fixed with enough training. First he would have to build up better and more flexible muscles. He let that train of thought go away as Hollis started talking.

Training had been good. At least, Hollis thought so. They where getting dinner cooking, and Keass wanted to know a bit more about Hollis.

Right away, her thoughts jumped to AD. The last time that she had seen her sister, Aether Draka had no idea who she was. Hollis had gotten worried. But, she had helped her find a gift for the women who AD thought had been her Grandmother. Which, Hollis had been so sure that the women wasn't really her grandmother, but, she had gone along with Aether. Hollis hoped that her sister got her head on straight soon. They would have to get back to work on what they where doing in Taras.

Then, Hollis thought better of it. She thought of her little trip to the Shore of Open Moonsea. As she and Melmoth flow through the sky. She couldn't replace that trip. But, then she remembered that Melmoth was a demon.

So, Hollis didn't know what to tell Keass. Instead, she asked "Well, what would you like to know?

"I grow up doing little with flying, or fire."
Hollis started a shot story about how she had gotten to Imythess without waiting for Keass to answer, thinking that was the best thing to start with. She would answer his questions after wards.

"Only when I was younger, when my father was around, do ever remember being able to fly. And even then, it was just inside. I have a sister, but, she had to leave long ago. She has been here ever since. That's why I came here, to Imythess, in the first place. I have met many people, and found her. I had forgotten I could fly. I had forgotten all about what my father could do. When I was in my home, my mother had forbid anything to do with magic. Nothing. No flying, no fire, no water, nothing. My father had loved being able to do all of it. If it hadn't been for him, I would never have known that I had magic in me. He left when I was younger. I don't know where he is. I would have hoped he had been here, but, I haven't seen him."

"But, what do you want to know? That's only a brief bit of my past..."
Hollis looked down at her hands. She hadn't noticed till then, but, she had light a small fire in them. It moved in the light wind. The wind brought cold. Hollis looked up in time to see that dark clouds where coming. They where going to get snowed on before they where done with dinner, that, Hollis knew...

Kaess considered the story she told and found it believable. He pondered for a moment about how to respond. Meanwhile he noted that the ham started to give off a pleasant aroma. It would probably be done soon enough.

“Well honestly I don’t have particular questions. You can just tell me what you like or ask some questions of me. As I said I just like to get to know people.

I can say I know how it is to be without a father. My own father left when I was very young. It was a long time before I met him again, but when I did I found he had several reasons. It doesn’t make it easier, but I am sure you will see your father again too.

Have you tried searching the Dragon Spine Mountains? Even if you don’t find your father you can most likely find a dragon that might know something. I would recommend meeting my father there, but he is a bit hard to reach.”

Kaess also noted the cold winds coming their way. He almost felt the weather at times, but it wasn’t a sure thing. He knew that the sense was part of the magic in his blood. He had some spells in that area. He sometimes thought he should learn more about that side of his power. Even though he had spells he knew there was much more to that side of his power. He knew fire better, that came easily to him, but wind took effort. Regardless he knew that rain or snow was probably coming soon. ‘Hmm may have to move into the shack in a bit. Perhaps we will need to eat dinner in there. It is clean enough I suppose.’
