Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own.

In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins.

There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free.

Kaess had gone out to collect herbs in the mountains and do a bit of hunting. It was getting about noon and the sun was bright over head. There were few shadows and he sat under a large tree in the center of a clearing. He enjoyed the speckled sunlight on his golden scales and finished setting down what he carried. Which wasn't much actually given most of the things he had were kept in his never ending bag of space. He did have his draconic boots on, which hardly made any sound as he walked even though they were made of metal. His draconic gauntlets hung on his hips from his belt tie. His normal monk robes were always the best to travel in.

His hunt had been quite successful for the most part finding many herbs out there. Most useful for healing, but a few were used to make some things he used in training. It was hard finding those ones, but he had been happy he had found them. He had even been luck to find a lone dear the creature sat beside him, but he would clean and carve it latter today then take it back to the monastery. It was always a bit of work to do so, but the extra meat would add to the food supplies very well. 'I will be able cook some fresh venison for my students. That should be a nice surprise for them tonight.'

First off though was lunch. He pulled out a loaf of bread, a water skin some cheese, and a large piece of ham. He quickly busied himself with making a sandwich for lunch. As he was intent on his lunch he didn't pay much attention to his surroundings. He was soon taking a large bite out of his sandwich. 'Hmm... I do wish there was a little company, I do hate traveling alone these days, but students have to practice. Sigh...'

Shalia found herself in the Gwilikith Mountains once more. She had not been her since she had first arrived to Imythess. At that time she had been with her master…her owner. But it was here than an elf had helped her break free from her slave collar and slay her master, and thus gained her freedom.

Now that she was free she had found that she needed to earn gold to be able to feed and clothe herself. Something she had never needed to do before. Even though she had been a slave, she was one of the better treated ones. One could not have an ill clothed under feed battle slave after all.

The only line of work she really knew well was that of a sell sword. She was confident in her skills with the blade, and she still had her demonic powers backing her up if she needed them. These demon powers she rarely used, unless she really needed them. If used outside the planes of hell…they usually attracted unwanted attention.

It was her work that brought her here today. A while back she had met a man who called himself Zel. He was a bit of an odd human, but that did not bother her in the least. All she cared about was the task he had assigned her. A 500 gold sum for the head of a gold half dragon by the name of Kaess. She was given the location of where to find the half dragon and a quarter of the coin promised as an advancement.

The journey had taken a while but she had returned to these mountains. Now all that was left to do was find the half-dragon and slay him. A shadow crossed her path and she looked up the sky. A humanoid form flew overhead as the sunlight hit him, she could see the glint of gold on his body. A smirk crossed her face…she found her prey.

The tiefling shadowed him throughout the day. Keeping him insight, but taking care to keep covered. She was no master of stealth…but the half-dragon seemed occupied with different things and seemed to take no notice of her. Finally he landed in an area and seemed to be taking his lunch. There we no way she could approach subtly…so she settled for the direct approach.

She walked up to the half-dragon and looked down at where he was sitting. “Would I be right in assuming that you are the one called Kaess?” she asked.

She was pretty sure this was Kaess. How many other gold half-dragons could there be? But it was just safe to check. No point in putting effort into killing him if it was the wrong person.

When Shalia spoke he had his sandwich half way to his mouth and stopped. He looked at the woman who came into the clearing. She was quite beautiful with her dark hair and her eyes were enchanting in a way. Thought he found they looked dead and wondered what they would be like full of life. The rest of her was also quite attractive, slim but also fit and deadly looking. She had seen much he could tell that, maybe more than he had over his years. His instinct said there was even more to her bellow the skin and he did not doubt that feeling. 'What brings someone like this to me.'

Having been through many battles he could feel that she wasn't there to be peaceful and he let his dragon blood boil with power, but remained relaxed on the ground allowing her to approach. He was hopping that maybe he could defuse the situation peacefully. He kept his hands away from his gauntlets and the blade release on his boots. The deadly weapons caused many people to pause or hesitate, just because the strangeness of them. It was ironic since he mainly used the weapon to disarm others and keep injuries to a minimum in a fight. Still it was better not to antagonize this lady yet.

He smiled at her in a friendly way. "Yes my name is Kaess, why was a lovely person like yourself looking for me? If I may ask that?.... You know I should ask what is your name as well? ...... Actually I would probably forget it soon enough... sorry I am horrible at names. I always try to remember, but forget even my best friend's name. Really it is a strange problem don't you agree? Oh do forgive me if I don't get up I am a bit tired from doing chores all morning. I do need to get back to my friends and deliver what I have gotten today too."

Even though he was sitting he moved slightly so he could spring back in an instant against any attack this woman may throw at him. His power was freely flowing and his eyes showed he was wary even if his body was looking relaxed. He eyed the sword particularly. There was no knowing how powerful she could be and he didn't underestimate people. He also wondered why she was hear and hopped she would at least answer before she started to attack.

Her emotionless violet eyes studied the half-dragon. She could tell he was a powerful foe..but she had her demonic powers to back her up. The tiefling was not fooled by his relaxed position; she knew good and well that he could be on his feet in the blink of an eye.

She also could tell that he knew this was not a peaceful encounter. His wary glances and small movements he made showed that he was as battle ready as she was. Good…at least she would not be killing some defenseless fool who did not even know what side of a sword to hold. She always did prefer battles that were a bit of a challenge if she was forced into a fight.

As he spoke she merely nodded. “Good…I just wanted to make sure I had the right person. If I killed the wrong one I would be unable to collect the bounty on your head,” she said.
She drew her sword from is sheath and dropped down into a fighting position. Her dark black hair changed color into a bright scarlet, making it look as if her hair were made of fire. Small scales appeared on her cheeks and arms, showing the small bit of draconic blood she had within her. She did not tap into her fire related powers, those would be useless. This was one born of a fire breathing dragon, using fire would just be a waste of energy. Cold steel would be enough.

“You don’t need to know my name,” she said. “For you soon shall be dead. Ready yourself, I will kill you regardless if you defend yourself or not.”

Without giving another warning she rushed in, blade aimed for a quick kill.

Kaess sighed as he moved back away from her. "A communication break down you sure we can't just talk this out. No no I see not." She was pretty good with the sword and the next strike looked like it would have hit him, but he then blurred a bit and dodged the blade, but at the same time didn't give an space. After blurring his hands had equipped his gauntlets and he fell into a simple fighting stance.

'It looks like she is good, but not good enough. I suppose I will just finish this up.' He saw a new strike coming at him. He let his blood give him speed and strength once again. His body blurred and soon he had caught the blade, but his other hand had apparently stopped a centimeter, or less even, from her stomach. Normally he wounded people like this then treated them enough so they would just be incapacitated, with no lasting damage, while he left. They never found the monastery so it was no big deal. However, the instant he caught the blade he had felt an odd feeling. He always felt hostility in a blade after his life, but this time there was nothing. This person wasn't evil or greedy or anything. She was a void. At the same time he almost felt a great sadness. He had heard of this sort of thing happening two warriors crossing weapons and feeling a soul of another, but he had never felt it to this extent.

There was also something else in this one. He didn't know what it was, but he knew he had to find out. Every instinct told him he wanted to discover this mystery and help her soul achieve something greater than just a void. He wasn't sure he was interpreting things right, but he couldn't help how he felt now. He had a new goal and that was guiding this lost person from a path that would probably end with her own destruction.

Blurring a he moved away breaking the fight for the moment. He wasn't sure how this action seemed to her. He also spotted the red scales. 'Those are dragon scales, she has dragon blood too. Maybe that is why I felt so much connection.' "Your your different from the others. You just don't have evil in your heart. It also looks like you have dragon blood like my own. Are you sure we can't talk? I feel like you have a beautiful soul in there. Won't you let me at least try to help?" He doubt this would work, but it was worth a try for the moment. If not there was the longer method. In which he let her take out her aggression on him. Then at least she wouldn't harm others and it would give them time to talk.

Her face twisted into a snarl when he grabbed her blade and went for an attack. The fact that he stopped his attack and moved back only served to anger her more. Did he see her as such a small threat that he felt he could play with her like this? She watched him carefully as he blurred his movements. This was not an uncommon spell effect, but it was an annoying one indeed.

She let out a scoff as he spoke. “You think just because I carry a drop of draconic blood that makes us alike?” she asked. “And what do you know of my soul. Don’t be a fool.”

She once again went for an attack. The tielfling woman focused to tap into the demonic powers that she had used for hundreds of years. Only to find that her powers were no longer there. Her eyes widening for a split second was the only outward show of surprised that she gave. What had happed to her powers? Then she realized that she had not used these powers since her master had died…so then her power had come from him? If that were so, then it mattered not. The loss of her powers was a small price to pay for freedom, and she could always attain new powers. But first she had to kill this half-dragon.

As the battle went on she grew more and more angry with each time she missed hitting him. Every blow was aimed to kill, or provide an opening to a death blow. She had no wish to make this battle any longer than need be, a quick kill was always better. As the battle went on, her movements became slower and her breathing became heavier. She had to end this fast before exhaustion took her over, but she began to think that she would never land a blow on this quick half-dragon.

Kaess was disappointed at the response, but she seemed to have tried something and then attacked him again. He was confused buy this action, but whatever she had tried wasn't a threat it seemed. She kept attacking and he kept talking as they fought though it took time to say everything. He didn't underestimate her, but still dodged with the minimum of movement.

"Of course draconic blood doesn't make us the same, but it is a connection. Also I felt your soul as another warrior through your strong attack nothing more. You soul is extremely strong and speaks of much in your attacks. Talk with me and I can get to know you. At least you can tell me why you are after my life or even just your name. Perhaps I can offer a better option. Please I truly do not wish to fight you."

He found that he just could attack this one. His instincts raged in him and he found her to be fiery, but she was quick and accurate. She was obviously going for quick kills. 'She is not into unnecessary blood shed, I wonder what is going on in her head. Still I can't bring my self to even trip this one. She's different from others some how. So so....' He couldn't place it, but he felt strong admiration for each strike and the way she was moving. She was clearly experienced, but she wasn't what she was. She obviously was used to doing things differently, but she adapted too. He was moving fairly fast now and he saw her red hair and the few scales shine as she attacked. It was beautiful. 'She is almost like fire its self burning thing in it's path... but she is low on fuel so burns lower. I want to see her when she can burn at her brightest.' "You truly are something fantastic." He said in awe a bit.

What he didn't realize is that he was developing a crush on this woman. With each strike he was becoming more fascinated, but some how he kept his concentration and kept avoiding her strikes.

Shalia was just becoming more frustrated with each swing that missed. He was dodging so easily. Did that man who hired her know how powerful this half-dragon was? She had a sudden urge to go track him down and kill him instead! But first she had to deal with the threat in front of her.

“Do not wish to fight? You are only showing weakness in such a phrase! Now, stay still!” she yelled as he dodged again But as soon as the words slipped past her lips she felt like a fool. Of course he was not going to stay still. Who would stay still and let a sword hit them? Fueled by anger once more she lashed out a few more quick and deadly attacks but to no avail.

Exhaustion finally took over and she fell to her knees breathing hard. She barely had the strength right now to lift her blade. This was embarrassing. To be defeated without receiving or giving a single blow. She glared up at him with her bright lavender eyes. She may be unable to fight any more, but her spirit was still strong and willing to continue the battle.

“Kill me,” she said. “Kill me and be done with it.”

She truly did prefer death over being captured. She did not know that Kaess had no desire in her as a slave or servant. But from where she came from, one defeated in battle was either slain or taken as a slave. If he did not kill her himself, she would find a way to take her own life. Death was better than becoming a slave once more. She tightened her grip on her sword, not to attack him again, but be ready to slit her own throat if he attempted to take her as a slave.

Kaess was glad when she finally stopped and he simply took off his gauntlets and put them back on his belt. He also re-buckled the blades on his boots. He looked at her and the look she gave him. He couldn't understand the hatred that was still there. He sighed as he could finally relax just a little. Not much though encase this was an act.

"A wish to not fight isn't weakness you know. I took a long time to make sure I had the power so I could chose my fights and not harm those who didn't deserve to be harmed. I am also not afraid to kill those who deserve it, but you are not one of those. I will not kill you or do anything to you. You are free to make your own choices. I would like to talk and find out more about you, like your name, and why you were after me, but if you don't wish to talk that is fine. You can even leave and come at me again at any time I won't hide or shrink from a fight, though having to face you in combat again would sadden me.

Or you can even come with me a learn something about the other options in life. I have a monastery not far from here where I train people in my art. I have a feeling you would do well in learning the Burning Fist. You are welcome to practice there if you wish as well, as long as you don't try to harm anyone besides myself. I would especially like to show you some of the beauties this world has to offer if you just look at it slowly. Still no matter what it is your choice and I leave it up to you. I have to preserve the deer meat first, but after that I hope you will choose to come with me."

A good portion of the day had already passed during their fight. He moved over slowly and started carving the deer. He even started a fire to salt and cook the meat over. He knew that those at the monastery would be fine by themselves for a while longer and he wanted to know more of this mysterious lady. Even as she was defeated she had burned brightly. He let her rest as she would not making a move against her, but he kept an eye on her too.

Still watching her was more because he found her fascinating. He found her one of the most enchanting creatures he had ever seen and it stirred emotions in him he hadn't felt for a long time now. He found his heart beating at the sight of her... it was weird, but her coming at him had been exciting. Now looking at her all he could think was that she was beautiful. Though he didn't know how to put this into words that would not offend this woman. His eyes would probably confuse her as they showed a wish to care for her, but not posses her. It also showed a respect in there, but confusion at his own feelings.

His scales glittered in the fire light and the sun was starting to set in the sky. Soon the smell of cooking meat was in the air.

Shalia did not let the half-dragon out of her fiery gaze. He claimed she was free to do what she wished, but she had a hard time believing that. But at the same time, she had a strong feeling that he was not one who would lie easily. Why would he let someone whom he had defeated go? The defeated became slaves or were killed. Was this just how this world functioned? Or was he just somehow how different?

She was silent for many moments before she finally spoke. “Shalia,” she said. “I was hired to kill you, by someone named Xel. But I think I shall go kill him now. I don’t like it when clients don’t give me important details…like how powerful my target is.”

When he asked her to train at him monastery she looked genuinely shocked. Why would he want to TRAIN her? She had just been trying to kill him! Why would anyone help someone who wanted them dead? Was this some kind of trick he was trying to pull on her?

“Why are you offering this? Do you really have a death wish or something?” she asked. “You want me…a woman with the blood of demons to come with you and train. Exposing yourself to many opportunities to take your life…which has quite a high value mind you. I do not trust you, nor should you trust me.”

She watched him in silence once more. He busied himself with skinning the deer he had killed. She realized she really had no more desire to kill him. The amount she had been offered for his head was not worth it. She had already been paid a part of the sum for accepting the job, she would just merely report the mission failed. If she ever saw that human again though…she would kill him.

As the smell of the cooking meat wafted over to her, her stomach growled loudly. It was not until that moment she realized that she was very hungry. Refusing to ask for food she went through her bag and pulled out a piece of dried meat and began to eat that.

Kaess listened as she spoke to him. He took time to consider an answer and he heard her stomach rumble. It was the oddest thing, but he felt her name stick in his head unlike any other. It was odd remembering a name. It had never happened before. Perhaps because his concentration had been on her so much. "Please take what you like to eat Shalia. I don't mind sharing there is plenty for all and it will certainly be better than that dried food. Your name is quite lovely, but it only suits as you are a lovely woman with a strong spirit.

As for the person who hired you I think I know him. The name rings a bell. He was a strange human over 6' tall with a stranger shadow?"
He waited a moment setting some meat to cool near Shalia and then a few more pieces by him.

"If it was give up trying to kill him. He is a demon trapped in a human form. He always comes back, I have killed him four times now and he came back. He hates me for many reasons. As for demon blood I could care little. Many would condemn me for having a dragon for a father, but blood is not who a person is. You are who you are and that is all there is to it.

Why I would train you is simple. No I don't have a death wish, but trust must start at one end, so I will trust you. If you choose to attack me that is your choice, but I would rather be friends. You seem like a person honest to yourself and I respect that. Also for the price on my head I can offer better. I can offer good legal and steady work with many friends of mine. They could use good guards at times or even adventures to retrieve items from dangerous locations. I don't do much of that myself anymore, but I still have the contacts. Again though I leave the choice to you.

As I have said you could find a lot of good from my training. You may discover many new options in life. I can even demonstrate a bit of the Burning Fist for you. If you decide you want to try just say the word and we can be off shortly."
He wanted to add more about how he thought she was beautiful and strong woman whom he wanted to spend more time with, but he couldn't say it. If he wasn't a half dragon he would have been blushing at the thoughts.

He started to eat a bit of venison, but he instead she have some as well making sure her hunger was sated with good food. He even offered some carrots and bread he had in his bag to go with the meat. He also ate some of this and drank from his water skin. He never had anything more than simple water to drink and unless she was low he wouldn't need to offer her drink. While eating he continued to roast meat. The deer would soon be done and ready to transport back. Though at no point did he find that he could look away from Shalia completely. His thoughts drifting to her constantly trying to figure her out.

Shalia looked to the meat warily. After waiting a moment, she did reach out and take some of the meat and ate it in silence. It was far better than the traveling food she had, and she would not turn down a good meal. After all, she did not know the next time she would get food like this.

She shrugged at his comment about the man who hired her being a demon. “You think I fear someone because they are demon? I know how to kill those with demon blood quite well,” she replied. This was true…after all she had been trained in how to kill other demons. Many from the Primes were not educated in a demon’s vital spots, or how to keep them dead.

She really had no interest in his ‘legal’ work. Who decided what was and was not legal? She cared little for the rules of this world and would rather follow her own path. Besides, she figured her nature alone did not make her a desirable person for ‘legal’ work. After all, paladins saw it a perfectly legal to slay all demon kind on sight.

“I don’t care about your ‘legal’ work,” she said, voicing her thoughts. “Is this not a world where your holy men feel that slaying someone like me is good and just? Why would I want to follow the laws of men who would kill me the instant they found out about my heritage?”

But then she did stop to consider his offer. True he was a fool with foolish ideal, but he was a powerful fool. And right now she did need to find a new source of power for herself. With her demon abilities gone, all she could rely on right now was her skills with the sword. She had only seen a hint of this one’s powers, and she could sense that he had a lot that he did not show.

“I will come to see what you can offer in training. But know that I have no intentions of being your ‘friend.’ I do not trust, and I do not make friends. Those things are the luxury of the weak and the dead,” she said.

Kaess shrugged as she commented about the demon. He did appreciate that she took some food. That was one step. A small one, but a step. "Don't think you are afraid just that it would be a waste of time. Though if you manage to kill him for good some time .... well lets jut say that would be something to see.

He munched a piece of meat swallowing it to speak again after her next comment. "Well I didn't mean legal work in that context really. I just meant steady work that had less chance of say sending you after a powerful half dragon without you knowing what you were getting into. Also there are a few people obsessed with hunting those with demon blood, but I only work with those with more open minds. Just something to keep in mind if you need some extra cash." He chuckled a bit in the middle at his own joke and smiled keeping things friendly.

He sighed at her next comment though. He had expected that, but he had hoped just a bit that it wouldn't be a cold response like that. He also took out a tarp that he started wrapping the cooked meat in that he wasn't eating. "Well I will be happy to teach you what I can and if not as friends you can at least consider us allies for now. Words may not mean much, but I always honor mine if it is in my ability to do so. So lets get started with one of the simpler tests I have. Here.

A small red stone floated out of his pocket and landed in her hand. "Now just concentrate the essence of fire into that stone while explaining what fire is to me. It helps me see how attuned you are with fire and how fast I can teach you these moves. " He finished eating his last few pieces of meat while she worked on the task and stuffed the wrapped meat into his bag of never ending space. He planed to get moving after she finished this and eating her own share of the meat he had given her.

OOC: This is first task so 500+ words or two posts of 300+ words. Don't think it will be a problem for you.

“We will see about this ‘legal’ work you speak of,” she said. “Though I still have doubts about it. I much rather keep as far away from the law as I can. The farther away I can be, the father it keeps me from those holy fools who call themselves paladins.”

“Allies maybe…” she responded to his next statement. “So long as you or your ‘students’ don’t do anything to endanger me or my freedom, then I shall not have to kill anyone. But if I even get a hint of hostile intent from you, I will not hesitate to remove your head from your shoulders. Are we clear on that?”

Shalia looked at the red stone Kaess produced. She could sense the power of fire within the small stone. The question he asked was an odd one to her. What was fire? Could something like fire simply be explained in words? But if this was a task she must overcome to begin this ‘training’ then so be it.

“Basically fire the release of heat and light when something combusts,” she stated. “But I am guessing you want more than just that.”

She paused for a few moments as she contemplated what fire was. “Fire is one of the most volatile of all the elements. It both destroys and gives new life. A forest can burn to the ground, only to make room for new foliage to sprout. It can be a great asset and a great danger at the same time. To ‘play’ with fire is a tentative thing. Man uses fire to fight off the cold, to cook meals, refine steel and all sorts of other tasks. But a single ember can destroy an entire city.”

“Fire cannot be controlled, it cannot be tamed. One can learn how to manipulate flames, but never truly be its master,” she explained on. “When you become too comfortable with fire, that is when you get burned. Even those born of fire, who live with fire flowing in their veins must understand that. My former master, who was immune to the heat of fire, was destroyed in a burst of flames when I slew him.”

She stopped again having explained what she understood fire to be. Or at least what most people thought of flames. But there was more than just the orange flames which burned to give off heat.

“But the flames of heat are not all that there is,” she explained. “There is far more than just those. Flames from the stars which are white and will even burn upon water. Flames which burn, not with heat, but with the frozen chill of winter and are not extinguished with water. Then there is what some call ‘blue fire.’ You would call it lightening, but it has similar properties as the common red flames. Gives light, heat, and can destroy or bring life. Fire is more than what simply burns wood and cooks food. It destroys, it creates, it is unpredictable.”

Kaess finished packing and nodded to her statement his fire stone floating back to him. He considered her words and found them good. Everyone spoke of it differently, but the feeling was always the same. "Good answer, though as always there is more to it than that, but then I think you know more than can put to words. I also would not worry about my students there are not many and none would infringe on your freedom. I don't stand for any of that sort of behavior. Well we should get moving and head for my home. "

He got up and started walking as he led his new fiery student to his monastery. He wondered if with time she would open up more. At least part of it had told him allowed him to guess she had been a slave. That would explain the distrust. He wondered what would free her of that hate. That was for a latter time though.
