Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own.

In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins.

There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free.

Nkiruka was breathing heavily through her clenched teeth, creating a sort of snarling sound that forced visible clouds of water vapor out in sustained puffs. Her shoulders were drawn up, slumping, while the woman tried her best to maintain a grip on the horse's reigns with gloveless, cramping hands. Nki's friend, a half-dwarven woman, tossed her a concerned look.

"Your lips are turning purple," she observed. Unlike Nki, she had access to lots of warm clothing on account of growing up around here. "So you've never been up north? Is this the first time you've seen snow, then?"

Nki gave a short, agitated grunt, which probably meant "yes." Ice crystals were forming on her eyelashes, so she tried to blink them away; it didn't work.

"Well, I hope this is worth it for you," the half-dwarf added. Her apparent comfort with the weather -- a soft snowfall, but with the occasional bitter gust of wind -- annoyed Nkiruka more than anything else. "You're looking for someone, right?"

The mercenary of a more southern heritage nodded. She managed to control the violent shivering of her lower jaw long enough to say, "S-son of a harlot owes me money. Hasn't paid back for, for months after he said. Gngh." The woman shifted and re-folded the wings on her back. Even though they were effective in blocking the wind, that still meant that her wings got horribly cold. She had difficulty moving them.

Nki's friend rose up in her saddle to see higher above her horse's head. Squinting through the snow, she noticed a massive outline looming far ahead. "Cheer up, then. We're almost there." She pointed.

There it was. The Deep Cities, carved directly into the side of a mountain by the huge population of dwarves living there, was where Jessie Lagan said she was currently staying. Jessie was rather interesting in that she was obviously female, but insisted one call her a man. Nki had fun playing into her delusions, but it was starting to turn into a bad habit. The pair stopped shortly inside the city, where the wind was blocked; while it made the air a bit warmer, Nkiruka was still dreadfully chilled. They both dismounted.

"Thanks for the horse," Nki said. Without the reigns to hold, she immediately dug her hands into her light jacket's pockets; they were still cramped and frozen stiff.

"Sure. If you're heading back south, just make sure to wait for a clear day or you'll get lost. The landmarks I pointed out are really easy to see from the air." The half-dwarf tied Nki's horse to her own. "I'll be off at sun-up tomorrow morning after I visit my family. Have fun trying to find your crossdressing friend." Nkiruka nodded goodbye -- she didn't want to wave -- and they both took leave of each other.

Unfortunately, the Deep Cities were quite obviously very deep. The huge place seemed to go on forever, and Nki gave up asking around town after a few tries. The lethargy of hypothermia was starting to set in. After wandering for a few more minutes, the mercenary found a small park area of sorts and took a seat on the nearest bench. Sitting sideways, with her back leaning against the bench's arm rest and her knees drawn up in front of her, Nkiruka pondered how one might more efficiently find a single person in such a large underground city -- and, possibly, how much the inn rooms were around here.

Jessie Lagan looked over the letter she'd been sent. It was from Nkiruka, an old mercenary friend. Nki thought Jessie owed her money, which she didn't. Jessie never owed people money, she was more responsible than that. Jessie also knew when to expect Nki, and according to the dwarven calendar Nki would be arriving today. She pulled on a light jacket, buttoned it quickly across her form, and rushed out. The city wasn't very cold, but it did have a sort of feel that it would never warm up.

Great pyres fought this, some magical and some fueled by charcoal, casting an eery glow across the whole city. Shiny minerals, veins of ores glittered across the cavernous ceiling. It was gorgeous in its own, dwarfy way. Jessie liked dwarves, they were creatures of industry and never bothered her about silly things like gender. All humans were slim to them, they said. At least they were honest!

Jessie's boots pattered across cobblestone roads, moving between teams of dwarves with statues and wagons filled with valuable ore. Gold? Silver? Who could say what the dwarves could mine. She waved at the few she knew as she ran to one of the great entrances to the undercity. The cavern closed in around her, becoming a tunnel. Engravings lined the wall, of great heroes and deeds. The road became more densely crowded, forcing Jessie to slow her pace. Which was fine, she was panting. She forced her way through the crowds and immediately grabbed the first winged female she saw.

Good thing it was Nkiruka.

"Nki, let's get going back to my inn. No time to talk, you look like an iceball." Jessie said. She promptly removed her coat and wrapped it around the frigid girl.

Oddly, Nkiruka's first reaction to Jessie's encouragement was protest. She didn't want to move. The feeling was brief, though, as the aasimar draped her jacket around the mercenary. Nki followed her friend back to the inn where she was staying. A fireplace stood in the center of the lobby with a group of chairs formed into an inviting half-circle around it. The girl found herself drawn to the biggest, comfiest one, nestling into it without giving Jessie a choice in the matter of seating arrangement. A dwarf at the main desk tossed them both an odd glance. Upon recognizing Jessie, he went back to his work.

After the slight ordeal of getting a warm drink, Nki scooted her chair slightly to face Jessie better. Her fingers were wrapped around the mug, her entire upper body slumped pitifully forward.

She spoke frankly in between sips of the steaming liquid. "It's been months, Jess. About time you hand over the money." There wasn't a shred of amusement in her facial expression. "I need it bad. Economy down south's gone to hell. You know how it is." Nki stared down at her drink. "...Thanks for finding me and all, though. You're a pretty good friend."

Jessie sat down next to her, sprawled out in the chair built for a dwarf. A little wide, but a little short as well. It was uncomfortable. She turned her head to look at Nkiruka, who still looked absolutely frigid in her gigantic chair. Their drinks arrived, Jessie receiving ice cold dwarven ale. A little ironic, but that was just how dwarven ale was supposed to be! The logs shifted as one of their number shattered. Embers scattered, and the dwarf rushed over to rebuild his little stack with a poker. The industrious creature made sure his stack was perfect before rushing back to the main desk.

"I don't owe you money, Nkiruka. Thompson does, remember?" Jessie said, after the delay caused by the dwarf. If Jessie could avoid it, she stayed out of debts. Her father would no doubt be completely displeased with her if she came home with massive debts.

"But I'm very glad you visited! I was wrapping up my affairs up here, they needed a translator for a few different things, then they put me to work managing a forge. It was fun!" Jessie exclaimed in her normal soft spoken way. She smiled and gulped her ale down.

"But what have you been up to, Nki?" Jessie inquired, eyes set upon the frigid lass. She was hoping to distract from the debt issue; debt had a tendency to invert trust into something nastier. The fire crackled.

"Thompson." Nki's eyes lit up in realization. "That ass."

Jessie then proceeded to explain what she had been up to lately, following it up by asking of the mercenary the same thing. She sipped her drink before explaining in a slow, uncharacteristically soft voice. "Same business with Red Moons. Cleaned up a violent cult lately, that was pretty interesting. Thompson's on vacation with his two little girls. Off to some exotic elven tree-town or something. Armies not looking for mercs at the moment. And, eh, hm... Yeah, life is pretty simple."

She turned her mug with her fingers, glancing hesitantly back down at the ripples of liquid. "Now I feel pretty stupid. Came all the way up here for no reason, apparently. But I missed you. Nice knowing you're still alive and such. You seem like you're doing well with the dwarves."

"There any good cheap places around here to eat? What kind of things do dwarves usually eat, anyway? I'm starving." Wrapping her jacket around her body in a sort of definitive gesture, Nkiruka rose to her feet with only minimal difficulty. She wanted to prove to her friend that she had completely recovered and was ready to perhaps traverse the city once more. She did look improved; her lips weren't blue, for example, and some of the emotion was returning to her previously glassy eyes. "I'd like to sleep in your room, too, if that's okay with you. I'm trying to save money whenever I can."

Jessie stood up, helping her friend as she did. Her arm clasped around Nkiruka's shoulders, bringing her close to her own body. The girl smiled and answered the first question.

"Meat, mushrooms and alcohol is about all dwarves eat and drink. It isn't very expensive, but I think we'll eat at Aldok's Tavern, since it is a foreigner's place. The dwarven food has been, ah, humanized and elvenized there. Easier on the palate." Jessie explained. She brought Nkiruka back through the city, down large and relatively sparse streets. They moved past a team hauling ore from the deep mines, and into a tavern near the entrance of the city. Jessie's own inn was deeper into the city, where she'd managed to get a smaller rate by staying longer. They ducked in, surrounded by the sights and sounds of non-dwarven culture, including an istani dancing girl serving food. Jessie sat down at a table the girl indicated. She idly wondered why the curvy lass could handle being dressed in so little in the cool deep city. She shook herself back to attention when a more homely maid appeared.

"Yeah, a steak with a side of plump helmet wafers, thanks." Jessie said. She glanced back to Nki.

"So, are you going to head straight back out tomorrow, or are you going to hang around?" Jessie asked, smiling. She hoped Nkiruka would stay, but didn't want to force her to stay out of politeness. Jessie had a few more weeks of service to the dwarves in her.
