Title: Image Resources

Lothlómendil - September 13, 2005 03:13 AM (GMT)
Being an avid user of the computer and a fan of free, legal stuff, I thought I'd share some of what I know with the rest of you. ^_^

Free image-editor software
Paint.NET - An improvement upon the most basic image-editor: Paint. Paint comes with Windows, and by itself is'a pretty poopy image program. Can't do much with it, and it saves the files as huge, nasty .bmp images. With Paint.NET you get lots of added functionality and higher quality without getting too fancy. :P It's good for beginners or small-time users.
The Gimp - This is a more advanced image-editor, and good for those who want the functionality of Photoshop without the price tag. If you want to do a lot of fun stuff with images, this is the program for you.
Apophysis - Not your average image-editor. This is for designing fractal images (if you don't know what that is, Google it). It's good for playing around and making some sweet looking designs and backgrounds.
Graphicssoft Top Picks - This page lists several other free image editors and ranks them according to their own quality standards. The Gimp is on there listed as #1, and there are plenty of others on there for you to try out too.

Free Trials of Good Software
Adobe - This link will take you to a page where you can download trial versions of several different programs by Adobe. The best one to try will be Photoshop 7.0 / CS / CS2. But there are some other programs of interest there too.

Ways to find good images
Google Image Search - Google is always your best friend. Always.
Deviant Art - Great way to finds lots of amazing artwork in many different genres.
Elfwood - Good resource for fantasy art.

This isn't a long list (yet), but I hope it will at least help get you started. There are a lot more out there, many that I can't remember or don't know of. If you know of some good resources to add here, post a reply and I might add it to my list. :)
