Kari Firestone entered the classroom. It was still a bit dark, so she lit some candles until she was surrounded by a pleasant yellow light.
She walked forwards to the front of the room, and carefully placed her heavy books on the desk.
This was her first time as a teacher. Before, she had been a student on this school but she had just graduated and decided she would give it a try. She loved to teach others things, so she really hoped she would be respected.
She took a deep breath and sat down her chair. She was going to teach about the rules of magic today. The students would arrive soon. She suddenly felt very nervous. What if they didn't like her? What if they would bully her and she wasn't able to control them?
Oh, shut up, Kari. You wanted this yourself. You're a very powerful mage, you always can turn them into frogs if they disobey.
She smiled. Oh, yes. She was sure that a few of the students would even be older than her. She patted the wand in her pocket, stood up and walked to the window to gaze into the misty surroundings.

Renate entered the classroom, ready for her first lesson. 'What will we be learning today, professor?' she asked her teacher. She was eager to learn something new. She loved learning new spells and abilities.

Kari was torn out of her thoughts when a young elf suddenly entered the classroom. She quickly raised her head and smiled.
'Ah, Miss Villerius! It's good to see one of my students decided to arrive early. We'll have to wait for the others, but after that I will start with the basics: the rules of magic.'
She removed herself from the window and made a welcoming gesture. 'Please sit down wherever you want. You can wait here until the lesson starts.'
She went to the blackboard herself and took a bite from her apple.

'So,' she continued. 'What brings you here? I didn't know you were into magick. What about your fencing?'

Zorgn walked into the small classroom. Zorgn hadheard that there were classes about magic kere, so Zorgn had decided to take a chance and see what was going on here. Sitting down at a desk in the back, Zorgn waited for the lesson to start. In the meantime, he conjured a cloud of poison and instructed it to zoom around the room.

Kari noticed that another student had come in, stealthily walking in the shadows, but she had seen him anyway. She ignored the cloud of poison and couldn't repress a grin.
'Welcome to you too,' she said with a smile. She was glad that finally more students were showing up. She checked the clock on her desk and decided that it was time. Everyone who still showed up now, was too late.
She took a deep breath and looked around the classroom. This is it, Kari. Now don't spoil it.
'Okay, I'll start the lesson now, seeing that it's already past 8. Today we'll talk about the rules of magic and I'll see if you're already any good at casting spells.'
She walked past the many tables and with a wave of her hand the cloud of poison disappeared.
'Well done, but we haven't started to show our abilities yet,' she said.
'Well, my name is Kari, you might remember me if you've been on this school for some time. I was still a student last year. I already know Renate, but what is your name?' she asked, looking at the boy in the back of the classroom.

Selena walked into the classroom to visit the class of her dear cousin Kari. As she saw her, looking all stressed and nervous, she called out to her. Maybe her presence would ease her cousin's mind a bit. Or the opposite because she wanted to show Selena just how well suited she was for the position of a magick teacher. She smiled to herself.
'Hey, Kari!' she shouted. Kari looked up.
'So, are you coping? I mean, this being your first day and all?' Selena asked as she walked over to Kari and Renate.

Kari was quite surprised to see her favourite cousin Selena coming in. She grinned happily.
'Welcome, Selena! Are you too going to follow lessons?'
That was a great surprise. It would be a lot easier for her if there were friends among her students. It would give her the strength she needed.
'I'm coping,' she continued, laughing. 'I was just about to start the lesson. Will you sit down to learn with us?'

Not wanting to annoy the teacher, Zorgn leaned back in hios chair and waited for the conversation to finish before he'd speak. Hopefully, Zorgn wasn't wasting his time here. There were things to do, and a class wasn't very high on Zorgn's list of things to do.

'Yes, I will sit down...teacher...,' Selena replied, winking at Kari. Kari smiled sweetily. 'Don't worry,' Selena said to her. 'I won't be a troublesome student.' She put on her most innocent face. 'See...only the wings are missing,' she joked.

Kari grinned and was finally able to start the lesson. Only three students, that's not much. Ah well, I guess it's better than nothing.
She wrenched her hands and looked around.
'Okay, let's start with you, Selena,' she said. 'Will you show us some magic?'

Selena groaned. When Kari had been the substitute teacher of their Potions and their Summoning class last year when the real teachers were ill it had been no different. All she really felt like doing was to disappear behind her desk. ‘Again?’ She decided to ask. ‘But…’ She thought for a bit. ‘Can’t you choose anyone…else…anyone…’ That moment she took a good look around and noticed the classroom was almost empty entirely. She turned to Kari and saw she looked rather nervous and was biting her lip, like she herself always did when she was. ‘Okay…,’ Selena replied, changing her mind. ‘I will perform some of my magical skills then…’ She smiled, trying to look happy about it. She still felt kind of strange. Standing in front of a crowd that was expecting something from you always made her stomach turn upside down. Even this time, with only a few spectators, she felt little different.

Selena stood in front of the class. She felt the onlooker’s eyes staring at her. She smiled forcefully as she saw a few other students sneaking inside the classroom, finding a seat and looking at her.
Man I do hope they don’t think I am the new teacher… she thought, feeling a bit flustered.
Then she noticed Kari was still standing a few inches away from her. ‘So, Kari…,’ she quickly asked. ‘Any preferences?’

Kari smiled at the red-haired girl in front of her and also gave the entering students a smile to welcome them. She wouldn't punish them for being late this time. This time. They'd better be on time next time...
She directed herself back to Selena and thought for a moment. 'Well, you can do what you want, as long it isn't a necromancer spell, of course. No evil spells are allowed. But nature spells, light spells, go ahead.'
She already knew Selena was very good at magic, so she didn't worry.

Selena cleared her throat. 'Ehm, okay then. Just a random spell? Fine. Let me...let me think of one.' She bit her lip and took a few seconds to ponder. Then she snapped her fingers. 'Okay... I will perform a Light spell. One that is called; The White Guardian.' She crossed her hands in front of her face and closed her eyes while she spoke an enchantment that sounded like a soft, calming lullaby.
'Liria moona scant potream, grea fisklish worlom vivream...'
Right that second a ray of blinding white light appeared. It looked like a thunderclap but soon it started moving. No, not moving... Changing. Transforming. Into a shape. A very clear shape.
'I summon thee, White Guardian!' Selena shouted. 'I summon thee now!'
Smoke appeared surrounding the entity but when it landed it looked like a random thunderclap no more. It was...a white phoenix.
Selena raised her arm and made a high pitched whistling sound. The phoenix looked back and flew over to her, landing on her arm.
Selena smiled and petted the phoenix his glowing feathers. The phoenix sang.
Selena turned to the students again.
'Normally this phoenix, the White Guardian, will defend me, attacking every evil force nearby. Now of course it doesn't sense those. I would be very surprised and shocked if it would have.' Selena kissed the phoenix on its head.
'So...this was the spell I wanted to perform. It is a spell, I should tell you, that you can only call upon if your heart it pure. So, if you are an evil warlock wanting to kill an innocent child or random opponent, you will have no luck with this particular spell...luckily.' She saw some of the students sitting at the edge of their seats. She smiled. 'Though I have heard of some very powerful warlocks who have been able to complete the White Guardian spell.' She paused. 'Of course only to be attacked by the creature later...' The students laughed and applauded her.
'So...I think it's time to let this phoenix rest. I need it to be strong in case I get into some serious trouble anytime soon.'
She, again, made a high-pitched sound. The phoenix looked back, right into her eyes.
'Laorium thentatum Ikrys,' Selena softly whispered to it. The phoenix turned its head, spreads its wings and then flew off again. At first it still had a clear shape, but with every clap of its wide, shiny wings its form faded. Until it disappeared into a little white star, turning to dust and falling to the floor, leaving nothing but little see-through stones, sparkling just as bright as the creature had that had produces them.
Selena picked the shiny stones up and held them high in the air, showing them to the class.
'These...are the remains of White Guardians. If you find these looking like this it means they have safely returned to their resting place. But... when you don't....when you find them looking like black, oily pieces of charcoal...then they have been killed.'
A few students gasped.
'Yes, I know. It is a terrible thing to kill a holy creature. Even the most evil warlocks have the respect to freeze them into crystal statues or to cage them and release them later on. But some...some don't... Of course there are high punishments for those who inflict intentional damage on those creatures.' Selena put the stones into a bronze cup that stood on Kari's desk.
'And that punishment is but too well deserved, I think,' Selena spoke.
Then she smiled to the class and Kari. 'Well, that was my spell. I hope you have learnt a few things from it. If you have any questions just come and ask me or ask Kari. We have fended off a lot of attackers using this particular spell. Otherwise you can always look them up in your copy of Many Mystical Animals, page 393.'
She walked back to her desk and sat down.
Phew... she thought. That wasn't that bad...

Zorgn stood up and adressed the teacher, "Do you have something against necromancy? Do you belive that it is wrong to give the dead another chance at life? Have you ever had someone die that you wished had lived?" Zorgn stood against the class, feeling thier eyes on him.

Kari slowly directed herself at the boy and watched him with a piercing look in her eyes.
'I have nothing against necromancy. I believe that it is possible to use Black Magick for a good cause, but it can be very dangerous too. My adopted sister died because she used Black Magick. I won't let anything like that happen to my students.'
She tried to swallow the lump in her throat. 'There are also good ways to ressurect someone you love. With the right resurrection spell. But...' She hesitated for a moment, not knowing how to explain her feelings.
'And it's not always a good thing to reanimate the dead...' Her voice was no more than a whisper now. 'Sometimes it just wasn't meant to be...'
She closed her eyes when an image appeared before her eyes, the vision of her sister trying to ressurect her dead parents. It had all gone wrong... terribly wrong...
And guess who's to blame... And guess who was found responsible for my sister's death...

Selena stood up again, rushing up to Kari as she looked like she was about to faint. 'Zorgn, give it a rest, will you! Can't you see you're upsetting Kari?' she said to him. 'I mean, you probably have personal reasons to want to convince us of the good a resurrection can do, but let's face it, most of the times all they do is cause bad things to happen.' She sighed. 'The Black Arts, even when used by a good and pure person, are a force not to be meddled with. They can destroy you without you even noticing it...'

Zorgn edged, very slowly, towards the door. Zorgn couldn't get trapped here. "You'll notice all right. Your flesh rots and horrible pain accompanies(Sp?) it. Eventually you will die. If you are very deep into the dark arts, you will live on as a litch. The power you can wield, alive or as a litch, is glorious."

Selena frowned as she saw Zorgn walking to the door. 'Are you going already?' she asked him, surprised.

Zorgn stopped, about a foot away from the door. Turning to the one who spoke, he said, "Hopefully not. Just making sure I got an exit ready in case this blows up into a fight. Must be careful, you live longer that way." Zorgn Sat in the desk nearest the door.

Selena smiled. 'A fight? Why in Heaven would anything break out into a fight?' She threw her long, red hair across her shoulder and awaited his answer.

Kari smiled weakly. 'No one's going to fight here. Why would we? I'm not angry with you, if you think so.'

Selena smiled happily. 'Well, there you go. That's all sorted out then.'

Zorgn looked around carefully to make sure that no one was going to pull a weapon on him before speaking, "I'm just being careful. Most are not very recptive of those who choose to practice the Dark Arts. I'd prefer to keep alive as long as possible. If no one is planning to kill me, Let's get on with it."

Kari shook her head. 'No, there will be no fight, don't worry. I've got nothing against those who chose the side of darkness. Sometimes you even have no choice.'
She beckoned Selena to sit down again with a smile and sighed deeply. 'Let's get on with the spells.'
She thought about it for a moment and then decided. 'Zorgn, will you show us your abilities?'

The thought of someone trying to simply vanquish Zorgn in the middle of class made Selena grin. Like that is going to happen. She looked at the boy, closely examining him. He did not have a bad aura. He seemed clean to her. And she would know if he wasn't. She had learnt how to detect evil and possessed forces from Daniel, her guardian angel. And that particular skill had never yet failed her. I wonder what the boy is going to do. What kind of spell he is going to perform. she thought to herself. I hope it's something we can all learn something from...

Zorgn began searching his memory for a suitable spell, conditions ruled out one and another one he had already used. "Well, as I'm short a few dead bodies I'll cast Enervation. Is there a target in here somewhere? If not a target, something that dosen't matter if it gets destroyed?"

(O.O.C. - I could have more spells, but I'm trying to buy something besides a spell at the moment.)

Kari looked around and took her empty cup of tea from the desk, happy that Zorgn sort of obeyed her.
'Will this do?' she asked, raising the cup. It was an old cup with a crack in it. It belonged to the school but Kari didn't really care.

"Sure. That'll do fine." Zorgn began chanting silently to himself, readying the spell. Kari was holding the cup by the handel and Zorgn decided what he'd do. Pointing his finger at the part of the cup that wasn't being held, he finished chanting and a very small bolt of darkness sped like lightning from his finger towards the cup. The bolt smashed into the cup and sent shards bach to pepper the wall. "Enervation. If it dosen't kill your enemy, it'll wound 'em badly." Zorgn walked over to his desk by the door and sat.

Selena clapped her hands. I am glad to see he didn't ask one of the students to pose as the sucject of his spell...

Kari watched Zorgn sit down again and smiled. 'That was very good, Zorgn. Thank you for choosing a harmless spell.'
She turned around and gave Renate an ironic look. 'Well, it's your turn, Renate...'

Zorgn shifted in his seat, a little angry that his best spell was called harmless. He'd worked hard to keep that spell small and not very dangerous. Harmless? I just chose not to cast it on someone and she calls it harmless?!?

Ace came into the room with his hood over his head and his long robe keeping the rest of his body from view. He slowly asked, "Am I at the right place? I wish to enroll in this fine academy and one day maybe teach magic myself. "

Zorgn turned and looked at the new arrival, all this "Fine Academy" stuff was sickining. "You're in the right place. Sit down and stop your brown nosin'."

Master Ace did not starting things off this way. Zorgn did look like a dark wizard but in a place like this his attitude was quite uncalled for. Master Ace found a seat and wordlessly sat down. He hoped the other students were not going to react to his arrival as Zorgn had.

Zorgn was in a bad mood today, having his spells called harmless, and people walking in on the class angered him. Mabye he could eliminate the student? That might be a good way to blow off steam. How would I get him? A duel might be the way, a duel to the death using magic might be fun. Mabye later, after this class is done.

Kari felt some hate between the two guys, and she quickly stood inbetween them.
'Welcome,' she greeted. 'Are you new at the Academy?'
New students keep coming. This must be a popular class then. Now that I've got more students, I might change the lesson...
She took a deep breath and tried to look superior again. 'Okay, let's try something else. Let's have a duel to test your skills. Renate will fight versus Selena and Zorgn will fight versus Ace.'
She just hoped it wouldn't end into a bloody fight...

Zorgn tries not to laugh at his good fourtune. Smiling, he yells at Ace, "Prepare to die, Ace!" Zorgn jumps out of his desk and readys a spell. He turns to Kari, "When does the fight start?"

Kari shrugged her shoulders. 'Now? But be careful Zorgn, don't hurt him! It's only a test!'

"Well, I'm screwed then. Dark Magic is kinda painful to have used on you. I'll hurt him just a little." Zorgn was excited to finally have this class lighten up a bit. instead of showing off spells, he was actually going to duel. Besides being a bit sad that he'd not get to kill someone, this was pretty cool.
