Lightning crashed and thunder raged through the calm of the night, causing nearby animals to seek refuge deep within the woodlands. All with a lone exception; a single dog strayed from the shelter of the trees and down to the waters edge. Staring down at its reflection for a moment, it lowered its head and began gently lapping at the clear liquid of the lake. The smell of rain took itself into the air, causing the dog to rear its head upwards and to the sky above as it began to pour freely from the ominous clouds above. Twitching slightly, the dog continued to stare up into the sky, noticing an irregularity in its flashing depths. A lone glowing object began plummeting freely from the upper binds of the sky and broke through the clouds on its decent down towards the ground.
While the object neared, the dog continued to watch in unwavering attention as it grew closer and closer to the lake. With its destination known, the dog prepared for its impact with the languid waters in front of it. Padding back a few steps, the object broke the lakes surface, causing a large swell to rise up from the center of the lake. At first, it really didn’t appear to be much, but the further it spanned out the higher in height it grew. Noticing this, the dog turned tail and ran off a few feet, but its efforts would be futile as the waves crashed up onto the bank and washed the dog’s feet out from under it. Skidding to a stop onto its side a good distance off from the lake, the dog slowly rose to its feet before casting a curious glance off to the lake, watching as the waters retreated back into the lake just as quickly as they had come out. Shaking the water from its fur, it padded towards the lake taking grave cautions to the stirring waters bellow the surface. Sniffing at the water curiously, the dog simply sat and waited for whatever it was to surface…
Lifelessly would he float through the waters current, falling deeper and deeper until he would soon reach the bed. Not a single thought implemented itself into his head, nor did a single muscle twitch in resistance to its oncoming demise. But as soon as his back came into contact with the sand at the bottom of the lake, only then would his eyes snap wide open. Becoming witness to his watery grave, several thoughts flooded forth from the deepest recesses of his mind. In a panic, he would try to take in a breath only to find the onslaught of liquid enter his lungs, making him grasp at his throat out of shear reaction. Knowing his time was drawing to a close, a single thought came to his mind; get to the surface. Easier said than done, not only did he not have the time to do so, but nor did he really have the strength, but it was the only choice he was left with. With one strained effort, he would place his feet flat upon the lake bed, and bending his legs at the knees he would force himself upwards with all the might he could muster. As he rose higher and higher in the water, his eyes were steadily closing in turn and it was at that instant he knew he wouldn’t make it. All hope seemed to flee from his mind as he knew it to be a lost cause and then all would draw black.
Lying down, the dog rested it head upon its paws, continuing to watch the waters as it had done so diligently before. But at that moment, the body would break the surface and come into full view of the dog. Rising from its spot on the bank, the dog simply tilted its head to the side, almost as if it were waiting for something to happen. When nothing did, the dog proceeded to enter the water and paddle towards the body. Treading in place, it latched its teeth onto the things arm and proceeded to drag it to the shore. Clambering out of the waters first, it then turned and clamped its teeth down upon the man’s shirt. Keeping a firm footing the dog reared all the strength it had into pulling the man from the waters, but only accomplishing in tearing the fabric in the process. Giving it another try, this time the dog managed to pull its upper body out onto the shore. Releasing the shirt from its mouth, it padded over towards the body and began licking at its face, at least until a noise scared it into retreating into the woods where it would simply wait and watch just in case…
