Title: Research
Kain Dunarrow - January 10, 2006 04:44 PM (GMT)
Kain sat in the library with his sword at his feet and a book in his hand... he was reading for the first time since he abandoned his traditions. His eyes scanned quickly over the pages as he drank in the information. He wasn't prone to reading about the past. Kain had the philosophy that "what happens in the past stays in the past" which is most likely why he liked to forget about the past. He hated his past... everything about it.
It burned Kain up inside to even think about it, but now he had already immersed himself in the thoughts of the past and had completely ignored the book. He shook his head and continued to read about the knights of Zyruk and how they took over Odrun and he couldn't find it in himself to concentrate on it anymore. He tossed the book on the table to the side and leaned back in his chair.
Kain was flustered, he couldn't drink in here, it wasn't the place and he hated to be sober at a time like this. He rubbed his chin and became immersed in his thoughts and his daydreaming. Kain began to remember things that he wished were forgotten. A woman's face appeared in his mind and he smiled but as it faded, his throat became hot...
He whispered to himself and brought himself back to reality, "The past is gone and so is she..." He grabbed the book off the table again and returned to his readings... which wasn't much better, but it took his mind off his thoughts...
Shain Volgornd - January 14, 2006 01:50 AM (GMT)
Shain entered the library, the cowl of his cloke pulled low over eyes, coverring his face in shadow. He kept his cloke tight around him to avoid showing his grey tinged skin. That brought too many questions about heiratige, along with his tappered ears and white eyes. As far as he could see, the building was empty exept for a man sitting alone with a curved blade at his feat. He seemed immersed in thoughts that troubled him, for he read, set the book down, then picked it up again. With no curant employers, and being bored, he approached the man. As he raised his hand to tap the mans shoulder, his hand gripped the dagger under his cloak. "Exuse me, but do you mind if I share your table," Shain asked in a low voice.
Kain Dunarrow - January 14, 2006 01:57 AM (GMT)
Kain was startled by the man's sudden appearance behind him. He nearly dropped the book and fell out of his chair but luckily caught himself by grabbing the table. He regained his composured and stared blankly at the man. Interesting, how was he able to sneak up on me... it doesn't matter, he thought to himself. Kain realized that he was still looking blank so finally he shook it off and answered in a hushed tone, "Sure, that's fine... I'm not really reading anyway, just pretending to be..."
As if the man cared. He realized that he had probably said to much but being courteous, he used his foot to push back a chair for the newcomer to sit in. Kain smirked as he put his nose back into his book. For some reason or another, the man seemed to make Kain feel uncomfortable and he was unable to keep his eyes fixed on the book. They kept glancing to see if anyone else was "sneaking" up on him.
Kain finally tossed the book back down and asked a simple question, "The name's Kain, what do you call yourself?"
Shain Volgornd - January 14, 2006 02:03 AM (GMT)
Shain raised an eyebrow. He was curious about the man, but also cautious.Well, it probably wouldn't hurt. If "Kain" caused any trouble, one flick of his wrist and it would all be over. "My name is Shain, sir," he replied.
Kain Dunarrow - January 14, 2006 02:08 AM (GMT)
((OOC: Be careful with Short posts, people get upset sometimes with that... but don't worry about it too much))
Kain chuckled slightly, "No need for formal names, Kain will do fine... Sir makes me seem old..." Kain continued to smile as he watched the man from behind his book which had suddenly become interesting again. "Sorry for the interrogation, but I'm a bit curious, what brings you to Taras?"
Kain waited for the average response from the average person just as always but he was used to in and honestly could care less; however, it was better than sitting here in silence. Silence, he dreaded it more than anything, and suddenly he realized that he was in a library. Silence was essence and essence lead Kain to be suspicious about everything.
Kain waited for a response...
Shain Volgornd - January 14, 2006 02:16 AM (GMT)
Did all humans act this way? Shain didn't know. He never spent much time around others except for employers and "jobs". He decided to start learning about humans now, starting with this one.
"I'm out of a job at the moment. Just looking for an employer." It was getting rather hot in his cloak and he eyed Kain for a minute before adding, "Do you mind if I take my cloak o for a second? There's nothing wrong with me, but...
Kain Dunarrow - January 14, 2006 02:25 AM (GMT)
Kain looked oddly at him and answered, "Doesn't bother me, I don't care what you look like." He remembered back to his earlier days; he never was much of a man with intolerance. He thought about it for a moment, "Job...eh?"
Kain was running low on money and there was no way that he could hire this "Shain" as a henchman or anything so there was no getting around that. He thought for a moment and then added, "Perhaps you should look for a job as a patrolman, I hear they get paid a great deal; however, I don't know..." Kain left it at that.
He returned to his book, only reading a few lines before closing the book and sighing... he hated to read.
Shain Volgornd - January 15, 2006 12:20 AM (GMT)
Shain considered it for a minute, then decided to just loosen the cloak a bit. After all, he didn't want to leave an impression on this mans mind. He knew a couple of people who would take advantage of any clue of his whereabouts. Throughing the cloak behind him, but keeping his cowl up, he said "Patrolmen wouldn't get alomg with me too well. Our talents differ greatly."
"By the way, you seem troubled. You keep trying to hide in that book. Someone on your mind; an enimy perhaps?" Shain waited for an answer, as this might e a potential customer. Steepling his hands above the table, he waited for a reaply. He suddenly realized that his hands were not covered and quickley withdrew them. Shain started to reach for his dagger.
Kain Dunarrow - January 15, 2006 01:33 AM (GMT)
Kain felt read, open, and vulnerable. He did not show this but instead bluffed it off, "Nah, I'm just here doing some research..." Kain felt like he was being read by an analyst; but, he shrugged the thought off and asked a follow up question to Shain's previous question, "Patrolmen wouldn't like the likes of you?? Why do you say that? Perhaps you have an enemy?"
Kain raised an eyebrow in suspicion but added, "Or maybe not? Perhaps you are just the same as me, doing research... Either way, it doesn't matter to me."
Kain realized that he had already set the book back down and was leaning back in his chair again. He startled himself and grabbed the book off the table again and pretended to read it...
Shain Volgornd - January 16, 2006 01:19 AM (GMT)
Shain raised an unseen eyebrow. This human was obviously disterbed, but why, he did not know. And what was this about resarch? He had thought it a job opertunity, but now considered differently. Easing his hand away from his weapon he answered "The patrolmen wouldn't like me for the same reason I asked about an enemy. As I said before, I am looking for a 'job'," puting an emphesis on job.
"What are you researching? Is it the reason you are troubled?" Shain leaned back in his chair to wait for the reaply. He didn't know why, but this human interested him as none others had before.
Kain Dunarrow - January 16, 2006 01:42 AM (GMT)
Kain had set his book back down and felt different around this guy. Interestingly enough, he felt like he could trust this newcomer. Kain sighed and said, "Yes, and I can't give one to you because I myself am out of money." He thought about the alcohol that was in his pocket, but was lucky enough to resist a sudden urge, "And yes, I am upset, my past has caught up to me... and I was thinking about it. But, I'm not going to sit here and tell you my past. You are still a stranger to me..."
Kain looked down, "I am researching an area that intrigues me, perhaps the place of my birth, in which I am currently searching for..."
Kain had noticed that Shain had moved his hand away from his weapon and that made him a bit easier in such "shady company."
Shain Volgornd - January 16, 2006 01:52 AM (GMT)
So this man was searching for his past. "I wish I didn't know my past'" Shain mumbled. Then, realizing what he had said might cause unwanted notice, he looked for a new subject. Once again he noticed the odd sword at Kain's feet. "Do you mind if I observe your weapon? I have never seen the likes of it, though it slightly resembles a scimitar." Shain had decided to avoid the mans past. He did not want any more people hunting him for no darn good reason.
Kain Dunarrow - January 16, 2006 02:00 AM (GMT)
Kain wished the same but he didn't reply... only when the man inquired about his weapon did he suddenly snap from his dazing out. Kain nodded and said, "It's a Katana, the blade is curved for greater speed with fighting directly from the sheath; however," He strechted his legs and noted them, "These are truly my greatest weapons... My fighting style involves a lot of random unnessesary movement but it works."
Kain picked up the blade and in it's sheath and handed it to the man, "Be careful... it's sharp... otherwise it's useless." He carefully watched Shain as he waited for him to take the blade from Kain's hands...
Shain Volgornd - January 16, 2006 02:09 AM (GMT)
Gently receiving the Katana from Kain, he studied it sheathe for a moment. "Yes, even in its sheath it feels... fast, quick." Slowly standing up as not to alarm the human, Shain turned and grasped the hilt. Suddenly he whipped it from its scabbard to test speed. Shains white eyes widened. If his grip had not been tight, the blade would have flown from his hand. Peering dow the blade he asked"What form of combat uses the legs more than the weapon?" Heturned to look at Kain for the reply.
Kain Dunarrow - January 16, 2006 02:20 AM (GMT)
Kain smirked, "I haven't decided a name for it, yet... it's just a little bit of me being me... perhaps we should spar... this however is not the place to do it..." Kain felt triumphant in himself. Finally, some action... maybe. Kain waited for Shain's response and in the meantime, he fumbled around with the book before finally tossing it back on the table.
He stood up and looked at the door before adding another comment, "So... what do you say?"
Shain Volgornd - January 16, 2006 08:24 PM (GMT)
Spar. Shain eyed Kain warily. Shain could not fight with his cloak vey well, especially hand to hand. On the other hand, it might be interesting to learn a new style of combat. Sheathing the katana, Shain place it on the table in front of its owner. "Very well. With or with out weapons, when, and where."
Shain rolled his shoulders and looked expectently at Kain. He sensed that this was going to be the first fight that he had for a while.
Kain Dunarrow - January 16, 2006 10:25 PM (GMT)
Kain thought about it for a moment before finally giving Shain the answer, "Taras Arena, not to far from here. Just meet me there... tommorow..." Kain looked at his Katana, "And we'll be using weapons, however, they'll be quarterstaves, I'm sure the Arean has some stocked."
Kain nodded and then popped his neck, "As for right now, I'll be leaving to rest before tommorow." Perhaps this would be fun, nothing like a good spar... Kain just hoped that it didn't get out of hand.
((OOC: After your post, this RP will end and we'll continue in a RP that I'll start in the Taras Arena... hope it'll be awesome...))
Shain Volgornd - January 17, 2006 05:55 PM (GMT)
Shain nodded. He knew how to use a quarter staff and he wouldn't mind the practice. "Tommarow at the arena. I'll be there." This should be interesting.
"I'll ge off now too. Resting is not the only thing I need to do." Nodding to Kain from underhis cowl, Shain left the library. As he walked outside, he felt a rush of satisfaction. He made a new aquatance that might be a useful source of information and entertainment without giving away his identity.
